Jen "The Genius" Psaki on the GameStop Short Squeeze: "We Have the first female Treasury Secretary"

Oh.

That's completely nonresponsive to the question.

So... you know absolutely nothing except Identity Politics beancounting and box-checking, huh?

"Is the White House concerned about the stock market activity we’re seeing around GameStop and now some other stocks as well?" one reporter asked Psaki. "Have there been any conversations with the SEC about how to proceed?"

"Well, I'm also happy to repeat that we have the first female Treasury secretary and a team that's surrounding her and often questions about markets," Psaki replied.

Ameritrade has suspended trading for GameSpot (and AME, another stock in the short squeeze effort), because, while the Wall Street elite can bankrupt small investors by driving stock prices down, it is of course unfair, unamerican, and deeply subversive for small investors to bankrupt the Wall Street elite by driving prices up.

See? It's just common conservative wisdom.

This is a leftwinger enjoying the broken noses of the hedge funds.

But the corporate establishment should note: the Right is now eagerly joining with the left as far as wishing to bring you down.

The next time the left attempts to break you up, impose huge taxes on you, or seize your estates: Don't expect any pushback from half of the rightwing!

Sorry, if you're going to use your money to control elections, I'm in favor of using elections to control your money.

You brought this on yourselves.

And the 70-somethings in the Senate will not be around to protect you forever.

And also: Go fuck yourselves to death.

By the way: Jen the Genius is going to need to "circle back" to any number of questions she is incapable of answering.

Correct:

@KevinFarzad

I know this GameStop stuff is funny, but you have to remember this is hurting real people who own multiple boats

I wouldn't worry about them too much. I'm sure China Mitch and Corporate Ken Doll John Thune are preparing a Bailout Package for the hedge funders as we speak.

To save the economy, you understand. To protect you, you peons.

32 Ummm ... the fact that anyone is even *trying* to defend hedge funds on this one is hilarious to me. And a bit concerning.

These assholes literally naked shorted a stock to the point where there were more short positions then there were shares of the stock available to publicly trade, and people noticed that and said "hey, if I buy some shares, I basically set the price that they have to pay me to get the share to cover their margin with the broker," and the retail investors who discovered this are the problem?

Why aren't we investigating why none of the "geniuses" on wall street saw what was going on and did the same short squeeze play that some autists on reddit did? Doesn't that sound like there's some kind of massive industry wide collusion on our stock market? How did no one else notice other than some small time gamer YouTuber and his idiot internet friends who hang out on a blog for retards on the internet? Why aren't we demanding congressional investigations in to naked shorts, and other institutional investors not noticing it?

*touches nose*

We're not speaking the same language any longer, and reason has no bearing to these people.

I think back to the Desert Storm days when SNL had a spoof where President Bush responded to Saddam Hussein, but instead of using usual politician western speech, it was something out of the Bible, all flowery and full of metaphors and weighty symbolism. Hussein's response was respect and admiration. It was funny and illustrative.

You cannot speak to these people as if they are sane, rational, and understand basic rhetoric. They have their own language and system of communciation now, and their presumptions are entirely different from ours.

No, this goes a lot deeper than that.

This certainly looks like there is a concerted effort by institutional investors to not only steal money from the middle class and our 401(k)s and IRAs in "safe investments", but our retail accounts. Oh, AND it certainly looks like wall street was YOLO'ing it all on red at the roulette table to put a business that employs tens of thousands of people out of business. Oh, and it looks like everyone else on wall street had to know this was happening and none of them did the logical step of buying up shares to make a quick profit on these ridiculous naked shorts. Looks like a massive conspiracy to defraud literally EVERYONE, and no one is even talking about that?

The Establishment is about to suffer death by a thousand cuts. The SEC probably will start to allow only Special People to sell short after they receive a license based on how much they donated to certain political whores.

Meanwhile, Jerone Powell said the most important thing to do for the economy is to be vaccinated. He really meant pay more taxes so they can be used to subsidize Special People corporations, but it was a nice sentiment.

A part of me is a bit annoyed I didn't get in on it. Not because I think I'll make money -- most of the redditors involved will definitely get screwed at the end of the day. But because they were right, this is bigger then making money. This is about exposing the absolutely ridiculous amount of corruption in every institution in this country.

The frustrating part is that far too many people are buying the lame and nonsensical CNBC / Fox Business bullshit spin on this that somehow the redditors are at fault.

123 These Redditors aren't doing this for altruistic, Occupy Wall Street purposes, they're doing it because these 'tards at the hedge funds thought it was a good idea to short a stock that was trading at around $10 a share to the point where the number of shares required to cover their positions exceeded the number of total outstanding shares. They likely also remember what happened with VW.

It's not that I don't applaud what they're doing. If you want to get a taste of what these assholes on Wall Street are like, start by reading Liar's Poker. Next, watch Wolf of Wall Street. Finally, watch one of a number of long form true crime docs on Jeffrey Epstein to get a taste of what these people do with their money.

The stock market is a much better measure of how the middle class is doing, as profitable companies employ people and their pension and investment funds hold stock in those companies.
The fact that a few people manipulate a few stocks (or that Nancy Pelosi buys a million dollars worth of Tesla just before Biden announces the federal fleet is switching to electric cars) doesn't disprove that.

That's not what happened. Hedge funds are naked shorting, something none of us can do. They're basically going to a brokerage, saying "hey, can you loan me 100,000 shares that are owned by someone else for a nominal interest rate?" and the brokerages are saying "sure." Then they take those shares that they don't own and haven't paid for and they sell them on the open market. That drives the price down. Then their analysts go on CNBC and talk shit about the stock. Then the hosts on CNBC say "wall street is very nervous about this stock, they say it's a sell," then normal people get nervous and sell their shares. Oh, and the funds that control our 401(k)s do too. Then the stock plummets to worthlessness, and the hedge funds buy the stock for pennies on the dollar and give those shares back to the brokerage.

Except this time, they went so far as to short more stocks then were available on the market. Which would work if everyone panic sold. (they could buy the same shares multiple times). But instead, redditors bought the shares and refused to sell them.

Wow.
Watching this afternoon's Bannon, and Mike Lyndell is being mercilessly attacked, his company, his addiction recovery network, and personally as well. Retailers who carry his products are canceling orders. And his addiction recovery network, which uses learning the power of God as it's centerpiece and he donates millions of his own money but doesn't charge anyone a nickel, is being mobbed by the Progda tools.

For the extreme act of being involved in a presidential election as a citizen.

It's only going to get worse.

Mortgage backed securities are more of a bonds thing than a hedge fund thing. The area in which hedge funds tend to provide more liquidity than would otherwise exist is commodities futures. Hedge funds are predominantly public equities with the use of leverage, but the category is pretty flexible.

It is illegal! It's been illegal for a long time, and under Dodd Frank was even more explicit.

but they have some kind of loopholes (that frankly I haven't looked in to) that has allowed hedge funds to get away with this shit forever. And, worst case scenario, SEC catches them and they pay a small fine.

And the worst part is that the brokerages are completely on board with this. Corruption from top to bottom.

265 241 I might not be doing the best job explaining what's happening here, and after all, I am kind of a Moron.

But you guys really need to look in to this. Not just this specific scenario, but what wall street has been up to for literally decades.

To me, this is even a bigger deal then the stolen elections.

These people are producing upwards of 40% returns (plus their own commissions, of course) by screwing us out of our retirement accounts by conspiring to rig the entire stock market and fucking over the American economy.

This really should be the biggest story of the decade.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at January 27, 2021 06:37 PM (UPoLF)

Hedges funds don't produce upwards of 40% returns over the long haul. In some years a small portion of them might have over 40% returns. And a lot of them blow up every recession. For the most part they're just actively managed stock funds + leverage.

It just looks different, but they channel massive amounts of money to the funds in different ways. There was something up on zerohedge about it a few weeks ago. It's all a scam. The "meritocracy" is bullshit. They aren't smarter, they don't work harder, and they aren't any better than you. I'm not saying they don't sometimes play by a different set of rules. No one here is going to get the special deals Buffett is able to get, and that's basically how things work across the spectrum. However the following is true
1. Hedge funds don't get bailed out(and frequently go bankrupt)
2. Shorting typically can't cause a company to go bankrupt, equity prices exist in secondary markets, the cash moving around doesn't affect the company directly
3. Dedicated short-selling isn't all that widespread in hedge funds, and they frequently blow up.
I think the current situation is funny and there's no reason for people to get their panties in a twist, because it's basically something that happens from time to time. Gamestop genuinely appears to be a business on the way out. Manipulating stock prices for M&A stuff is way dirtier than this.

I know that a lot of people here believe that the financial edifice of derivatives, hedge funds, investment banking, etc. built up on Wall Street is absolutely necessary to the nation's economy. Just like a number of people here believe that the Republican party cannot die. Both rest on assumptions, not facts.

The example of 'Rickey' Vaughan being pursued for punishment up to twenty years for tweets in 2016 that were satiric in nature that no reasonable person could believe is another sign that the whole rotten edifice is about to fail.

Dedicated shorts are a relatively small group of funds that tends to watch the same stocks. They dogpile and retreatin a cycle. Occasionally someone fairly wealthy will note they've done something stupid and blow them up. But most of the time they aim for fairly safe bets so it's not like there's anyone sitting there watching for these opportunities.

but assume for a second that not everyone is as honest as you are. Do you not see how, potentially, that could be misused to divert people's retirement funds and other assets under management in to stocks that someone at a hedge fund or other institutional investor is planning on shorting, then they pull out at a slight loss (which they can make up later on the other side of this kind of deal), which drives the price down, causes panic selling and helps the person with the short position?

Most of the allocation tendencies of the institutions are pretty public. The market is even majority indexed not including closet indexers at this point iirc. Which is to say there is no decision making involved in investing tons of money.

Pretty much the only group of people who could do what you're describing is personal financial advisors. Nobody else has that degree of discretion and also manages retirement funds.

446 The secret to mutual funds is to hold for the lon* term and dollar cost average. This means putting a little money in on a regular basis regardless of the markets ups and downs.
For years I thought I was really smart and managed my own portfolio but after a few big misses( world com and Easter airlines) I left Merril Lynch where my stockbroker was making money but I wasn't and went to Fidelity. These are the big guys and they know what they are doing.
I had a client once who worked for Fidelity as a fund monitor. His job was to make sure that the fund managers were doing things on the up and up....every day.
If you go this route though, you have to sit tight and wait out market volatility.

No? So if I run a large institutional fund with billions of dollars, and I invest in a stock, and my analysists go on CNBC and hype this stock up, and a bunch of people move in to it, then my buddy at the hedge fund the floor above me takes out a large amount of shorts, then I pull my investments out (lowering the stock price), and my analysist then go on CNBC and say "this stock is a sell!" and all the hosts repeat "Harry Parateses' fund has pulled out of this stock due to concerns about long term viability!" and retail investors and others not "in the know" panic sell and the hedge fund cleans up on their shorts ... that scenario is just not possible to you?

Or how about if a stock is shorted at 140% of float and NO ONE on wall street "notices" and goes for the obvious short squeeze, and only some retards on reddit see it?

Or how about if a stock is shorted at 140% of float and NO ONE on wall street "notices" and goes for the obvious short squeeze, and only some retards on reddit see it?
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at January 27, 2021 07:04 PM (UPoLF)

Hedge funds do press releases to intentionally move the stock prices of companies they're short. Large institutional funds and hedge funds typically aren't operating in the same plane though. A mutual fund can't do shorting at all, while a hedge fund can practically do anything.

The only people who could practically do what you're talking about to a hedge fund(that is a sudden concentrated position in a stock to break shorts) are other hedge funds or a very wealthy private individual. It does happen sometimes but not often.

Yes, of course it's fine for people who do whatever the most powerful voices on wall street want to say whatever. But as soon as a normie points something out, then it's a huge problem. "hey guys, this stock is shorted to 140% of float (rocket ship rocket ship diamond hands emojis)" is of course more problematic then a cable TV channel allowing all kinds of assholes with skin in the game to talk about what stocks they think should be bought and sold, because of course those guys are honest with us while the guy throwing his $600 stimulus check at a stock and posting about it on the internet is a threat to our democracy.

I've known about this squeeze for almost a month. The reason I (and a lot of other people) didn't get involved, is because everyone as WSB knows that a lot of retail investors are going to lose a lot of money over this. And I just don't have the spare cash right now.

A lot of them did.

Sure, some are in it for the money, but most are in it to try to expose this nonsense to the rest of the world. Most of WSB is not going to sell, and is going to take down these hedge funds with them.

I don't know how much that says about politics though, it's quite possibly just a business decision for them. GOP advertises that it isn't a threat to them, so they give a few a small bribe to keep them loyal. Dems demand large bribes or else they'll threaten to send the OWS hobos back in along with the requisite wall to wall media coverage of their glorious struggle.

Hedge funds being crushed by the short squeeze have to liquidate their strong positions to meet margin or stay solvent in general. This was absolutely going to have a ripple-effect, that was kind of the point of the movement that piled in to GME/AMC.

You're missing the fact that many of these funds bought at $10, and the stock is now up to what, $300? They have to cover that difference. Or the brokerage does.

So they have to liquidate stocks and positions all across the market to even try to cover that ludicrous delta.

They funds will probably end up bankrupt, but someone has to cover those shorts. Which means a lot of money has to come out of the market to make up for their horrific gambles.

But here in WA, Olympia is trying to ban it, as well as "Assault Rifles" and open carry.

Locals, best go to waguns.org for details, and how to send an email to your local state reps and senators. All the details are there, it only takes a couple of minutes to cut and paste your own message, and there is even a thread how to find your own reps email.

630 The new narrative being spun is that somehow the WallStreetBets guys "hacked" the market. If they can say "hackers" enough a large number of the naive/gullible will side with the Hedge Funds when the bailouts come.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at January 27, 2021 07:31 PM (UPoLF)

Even "solid stocks" are massively inflated by a factor of at least 3. How anyone can believe the DOW setting daily records with the entire economy shut down for a year is normal is beyond me. The DOW at 10k is arguably valued too high. It's at 30k

Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at January 27, 2021 07:37 PM (IbxQb)

650 Essentially, Wall Street has become divorced from Main Street and the valuations put on stocks is a direct reflection of the amount of fiat money (currency not backed by anything of value) pumped into the system since Long Term Capital bailout in 98. The 2008 crunch timing came in part because Bear Stearns did not get a buyout when the market expected it would and it spiraled outward from there.

Likewise, our political system has become by and large divorced from voters where the Uniparty plus politicians in robes disguised as judges have prevented almost every attempt by the people of both parties to correct idiotic and harmful policies.

The rectification that is coming where reality is reasserted will not be pleasant. Those of you with faith in the financial markets, you might want to start questioning what you have learned and been taught, those of you with faith in the political system, might want to reexamine your fundamental assumptions as well. Americans (or at least Dominion and the DNC) have chosen the form of the Destructor and it is Sleepy Joe.

Well, mostly because the brokers know that they fucked up.

No one on WSB has any incentive to sell. The brokers charge interest on the borrowed shares. And the brokers don't own the underlying shares, retail investors do. And the brokers don't want to be the ones left holding the bag for potentially unlimited losses. Which is relational on their part.

Also, everyone, nood.

If it were related I'd be more inclined to attribute it to the news then the actual market transactions of any affected hedge funds. Huge portions of the market are very passive(mostly institutional stuff). Conventionally regular investors pull out or put into the stock market as a whole. It is this new wave of retail investors that have abnormally active trading behavior where they deal more in individual securities.
