Good morning to all you 'rons, 'ettes, lurkers, and lurkettes, wine moms, frat bros, crétins sans pantalon (who are technically breaking the rules). Welcome once again to the stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, a weekly compendium of reviews, observations, snark, witty repartee, hilarious bon mots, and a continuing conversation on books, reading, spending way too much money on books, writing books, and publishing books by escaped oafs and oafettes who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read. Unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these pants, which come from, what, old bedspreads or dish towels? You make the call. Presumably, the girl is sold separately. Pic Note: Got $5 million you want to spend? This might be a good investment: This 1929 built mansion, located at 15530 Windmill Pointe Dr. in Grosse Pointe Park, is on the market for $4.75 million...Grosse Pointe Park is a hoity-toity suburb of Detroit and this mansion is located on the shore of Lake St. Clair. It Pays To Increase Your Word Power® Mrs. Muse is reading Faith & Life, a collection of 41 sermons by the Presbyterian theologian B.B. Warfield and published in 1916. Our pastor gave it to her for devotional reading, but I would not recommend it if you're looking for something to read quickly. The writing is very densely packed and it takes a bit of effort to extract the full meaning of what you're reading. Now Mrs. Muse does not have much formal education above high school, but what she has is the tenacity of a bulldog, especially when faced with challenges like this. So she sits down to read this book armed with a dictionary, a concordance, and her bible and she wrestles with the text until it hollers "'nough!" Mirror, Mirror It's true that conservative writers write conservative books in response to the liberal hegemony in the publishing industry, but the wokescolds are trying to get in on the action, too. Eris sent me a link to this book, Trans-Galactic Bike Ride: Feminist Bicycle Science Fiction Stories of Transgender and Nonbinary Adventurers (Bikes in Space), and so now you'll have to read about it, too. It appears to be an anthology of 'woke' stories: Take a ride with us as we explore a future where trans and nonbinary people are the heroes. In worlds where bicycle rides bring luck, a minotaur needs a bicycle, and werewolves stalk the post-apocalyptic landscape, nobody has time to question gender. Whatever your identity you'll enjoy these stories that are both thought-provoking and fun adventures. Find out what the future could look like if we stopped putting people into boxes and instead empowered each other to reach for the stars. You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll kiss $12.95 good-bye! I was a little miffed because there's no Amazon preview and no Kindle edition. This book is published by Microcosm Publishing, located in Portland, OR (and what a surprise that is, eh?). And if you want to go down the rabbit hole, fire up your favorite search engine and look for 'Microcosm Publishing boycott'. This is old news now, but apparently the owner of Microcosm did some things that ruffled the feathers of his fellow wokesters, and a squabble broke out, as did the shunning. That's the thing about the 'woke' crowd: they're always fighting. If we're not around for them to fight, they'll fight each other. Probably because being 'woke' has so many requirements and which shift and change constantly, so much so that the wokesters can't help but step on each others toes. ----------- Meanwhile, while looking at 'woke' bicycle fiction, this Hourly History installment showed up down at the bottom of the page, Vlad the Impaler: A Life From Beginning to End, which has this to say about his: His story, however, is much more complicated than the oft-reported details of his atrocities would imply. He lived in a time of conflict where many were equally as cruel, and he is viewed as a hero in Romania where he is remembered as a protector of his people. This eBook tells the story of his life and times, and discusses his connection to the fictional Count Dracula, in a succinct, compelling manner, which makes for an entertaining read that is packed with historical information. So yeah, Vlad was an a-hole, but the world was full of a-holes back when he lived. Anyway, this 35-page book was free, so I snatched it up. Who Dis: (click to enlarge) (Last week's 'who dis' was actress Loretta Young. What I'm Reading I have discovered the mystery novels of Florida author Michael Lister, and holy cow, he has a crap ton of them. He has a noir series set in Panama City, Florida during the WWII era, the first one being The Big Goodbye. It's a decent read, the story is good, and a young version of myself could probably finish it in a couple of sittings. But since I'm old and tired, it takes me longer. The only fault I have with it is that it's a little too self-consciously noir. Like there's this one scene where the main character, a private detective (natch) is sitting in his office in the dark and the only illumination is from the blinking neon light coming from some joint down the street, and I'm thinking, oh, c'mon, it's like the author is saying "look at this noir scene I'm setting up here, isn't it cool?" The only thing missing is some dame bursting in through the door asking for help because she thinks she's being followed by some jamoke. This is actually a plot point from chapter 1 which is how the story gets started. But that's just a minor quibble. The Big Goodbye is available for FREE on Kindle and the rest of Lister's many novels are in the $2.99 - $7.99 range They Don't Publish Books Like This Any More: Books By Morons This week, we have a couple of books for very young (pre-school) children. A long-time lurker sent me a link to his newly-published work, titled Momma, May I Have the Moon?. The blurb goes like this: “Momma, may I have the moon?”Available on Kindle and paperback. ___________ If you're feeling a bit adventurous, moron author Mark Huffman wrote his own children's book, The Toot Fairy, about a subject which should be near and dear to the heart of every moron: farting. When it's time for Jessa the fairy to proclaim what kind of fairy she wants to be, she accidentally says "toot" instead of "tooth!" Now she'll be in charge of finding all the toots from all the bottoms in the world. This is not exactly what she had in mind...Maybe not, but a couple of reviewers on Twitter said it was pretty funny. Mark, of course, is a deeply disturbed individual who thinks he's Dr. Suess. But he actually is an author of other books, so I guess delusions of grandeur come with the territory. Moron Recommendations 39 Have I previously suggested Rick Atkinson's latest, The British Are Coming and if not, I do now. Outstanding read as always from Atkinson. My thunder, what a whopper! The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 clocks in at nearly 800 pages. And this is what you get: From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world’s most formidable fighting force. It is a gripping saga alive with astonishing characters: Henry Knox, the former bookseller with an uncanny understanding of artillery; Nathanael Greene, the blue-eyed bumpkin who becomes a brilliant battle captain; Benjamin Franklin, the self-made man who proves to be the wiliest of diplomats; George Washington, the commander in chief who learns the difficult art of leadership when the war seems all but lost. The story is also told from the British perspective, making the mortal conflict between the redcoats and the rebels all the more compelling. This is the first volume of a projected trilogy about history of the Revolutionary War. Atkinson's previous book, An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943, won a Pulitzer Prize. ___________ 194 I am rereading A Practical Guide to Evil, an excellent web novel in which tropes have power and being trope-savvy can save your life. Calernia is a high fantasy world in which the gods, Good and Evil, have granted special powers to certain individuals who are, basically, the main characters of their lives. These powers are associated with Names, which are essentially fantasy archetypes, like Chancellor, Dread Emperor, Black Knight, White Knight, etc. The main character starts out as the Squire to the Black Knight, hoping to eventually free her homeland (which was conquered by the Black Knight...awkward). The scope of the story widens from there. This web novel can be read here: https://practicalguidetoevil.wordpress.com/table-of-contents/. ___________ One of you morons wondered about this year's Newberry Medal winner, so I poked around a bit, didn't see anything worth writing about, but I did run into this book, Spies, Code Breakers, and Secret Agents: A World War II Book for Kids looked like it might be a fun YA book, and perhaps it is, but I noticed something interesting in the sample text you can access. There was some sort of appendix that had a "Books about Espionage" section, presumably for further reading. Here are the titles and authors: Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II by Liza Mundy (Amazon Editor's pick) Madame Fourcade's Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France's Largest Spy Network Against Hitler by Lynn Olson (Amazon Editor's pick) The Wolves at the Door: The True Story of America's Greatest Female Spy by Judith Pearson D-Day Girls: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win World War II by Sarah Rose (Amazon Editor's pick) Spies, Lies, and Disguise: The Daring Tricks and Deeds that Won World War II by Jennifer Swanson and Kevin O'Malley (illustrator). Boy, that's not ham-handed at all, is it? I guess publishing is all in on the "gynocentric" history of WWII. I mean, I'm not criticizing the books, they're probably fine. Just the selection. Is it really important to know about these female spies before, say, the breaking of Enigma? Also, in the intro, the author discusses the falling out between Germany and the USSR and is very careful to point out the Hitler was a "fascist" and an evil bad guy, and he did bad things, but, get this, she had not one word to say about Joseph Stalin. In fact, she didn't mention him at all. Just that the USSR invaded other countries, too. No condemnation at all. I guess we're supposed to infer it. ___________ So that's all for this week. As always, book thread tips, suggestions, bribes, insults, threats, ugly pants pics and moron library submissions may be sent to OregonMuse, Proprietor, AoSHQ Book Thread, at the book thread e-mail address: aoshqbookthread, followed by the 'at' sign, and then 'G' mail, and then dot cee oh emm. What have you all been reading this week? Hopefully something good, because, as you all know, life is too short to be reading lousy books. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Morning Horde and thanks OregonMuse, I have been working through my 2021 reading list, with only 4 departures so far. This past week I finished The Fellowship of the Ring and am halfway through The Two Towers. I haven't reread The Lord of the Rings since high school, and much of the lament and inexorable degradation of society is really hitting home this time through, now that I've turned 29. There's a reason it's lasted. Good stuff.
I also read The Great Good Thing, by Andrew Klavan, which was on sale a bit ago. I'm a dedicated follower of the man's thoughts, but hadn't gotten around to reading his memoir (or much of his other work, frankly) of coming to faith in Christ from his start as a secular Jew. It was enlightening, and useful to see the mental, emotional, occupational, and philosophical struggles of a clear and dedicated thinker. Also recommended. I'm also working my way (for the 4th time) through the book Heaven by Randy Alcorn, almost a guided bible study of the topic, for a book club I'm a part of. It's extremely good. I'd be curious to see what a non-believer thought of it, as (purely based on the scripture) it reveals that much of the meaning of the doctrines everyone knows has been lost or abandoned (in understanding) through pagan influence. An extremely high recommendation for believers, too. It just looks at the scripture and goes from there, it's not one of those "Little Timmy died for 12 minutes after falling off a slide at preschool and this is his report of heaven" types of book. Anyway, I'm about 100 pages into Junger's Eumeswil and I am finding it interesting. Unlike The Forest Passage, this is a post-apocalyptic piece of fiction, but still deals with how to keep your sanity in a place where conforming is imperative.

I read 36 Righteous Men by Steven Pressfield. The book has been described as a futuristic noir thriller. Two NYPD detectives, James Manning and Corina "Dewey" Duwai, are assigned to investigate a series of murders. Soon they are involved with the Russian mafia and Jewish mysticism. Pressfield, one of my favorite authors, delivers a fast-paced attention getting story. One negative though. He does preach the global warming narrative throughout the book.

Atkinson's previous book, An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943, won a Pulitzer Prize.
That was the first volume of a trilogy about the US involvement in Europe during WW2. Iirc he used diaries as his primary source documents. I started to read it and learned a lot of things, including what a disorganized fuckup Saint Delano was, but ultimately stopped because it was more like reading newspaper accounts than a work of history with an overarching narrative. Last week, Bill James came up, and I want to clear something up. Contrary to what is usually thought, his initial influence, in the 80s, was NOT in creating sabermetric alchemical formulae to analyze baseball. He did that a bit. But what really made him important was his use of absolutely traditional stats in new contexts.
E.g., he actually counted, and published, data for home & road performance, or left/right matchups. These data themselves were not new, he used the same old ones that all were familiar with. But to see them presented that way was eye-opening. And it allowed, e.g., seeing the effects of ballparks on performance. Don't have the data in front of me, so I'll just use the bit I know by heart. Joe DiMaggio: Home: .315 BA, 148 HR Road: .333 BA, 213 HR THAT is park effect. Posted by: Eeyore at January 31, 2021 09:12 AM (7X3UV) 33

Speaking of females in WW II and Enigma, I recently read "The Debs of Bletchley Park" about women working on the codebreaking project. Original hires were indeed debs because the brass knew them and their families and knew they were trustworthy. Eventually all kinds of women were employed. Only a handful knew what Bletchley was actually doing. Entertaining insight in to the more human aspects of the war.

I've finished the first volume of Livy's History of Rome (Penguin Classics edition) and am now on the 2nd, Rome and Italy.
It's a little complicated because Livy insists on using traditional dates which don't really line up with reality, so now that we've gotten past the Sack of Rome by the Gauls and records are better, he has to use some fancy footwork to make the chronology line up. I'm enjoying the whole plebian vs patrician conflict. Some things never change. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 31, 2021 09:14 AM (llXky) 42

As a sidebar to my reading, my wife is tackling a number of Catholic books on doctrine, faith, etc., and while we are pursuing separate tracks, I find it instructive to compare Roman pagan practices with Christianity.
Even the "virtuous" Romans were pretty bloodthirsty. Paganism was not a kind faith - it did have moments of mercy and compassion, but the augurs, consulting books, observing sacred geese etc. is a bit of a contrast. One episode caught my interest: to end a plague, the Romans consulted the Sibylline books and were instructed to set out three luxurious couches to entice the gods to stop in and visit, and they likewise had to set up chairs and refreshments in their own homes and welcome in anyone who came through their (open) door. Enemies had to be nice to each other and everyone was supposed to be as friendly as possible. The gods were pleased and the plague was lifted. And they went right back to being beastly to one another. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 31, 2021 09:19 AM (llXky) 50
(I'm being careful to stay within new limits).
The DiMaggio data show how extreme was old Yankee Stadium's effect on RH power hitters. And yes, it applies to the lesser ones, Meusal, Lazzeri, Skowron, Howard, et al. OTOH, it really wasn't great for lefties; it just didn't kill them. Ruth's numbers, home and road aren't much different; well within the normal H/R differences. Gehrig actually hit better on the road. Another thing James did was report stuff, again traditional, that just didn't get out there. Things like double plays (both by hitters, and supporting pitchers), or HR and SB against pitchers (and catchers for the latter.) What I want to emphasize is the fact that this was done with the traditional stats. But it did have a big effect. It was no longer possible to look at two pitchers with 3.00 ERAs, and regard their performances as equally valuable if one was pitching in Fenway, the other in Dodger Stadium. The latter is just good (by 80s standards), but normal. The former is doing a fantastic job. Posted by: Eeyore at January 31, 2021 09:19 AM (7X3UV) 51

Turns out, the Democrats were as willing then to destroy the country to get power as they are now. Whoulda thought? They were perfectly willing to let white Southerners oppress and massacre blacks, as they are willing to countenance the opposite now.

Pt 3:
What James did show, for instance, was (a) how big park effects really were, and (b) how they did not effect all players equally. E.g., nothing special happened to Sandy Koufax's numbers between 1961 and 1962 - in road games. What changed is that he moved from LA Coliseum, which was killing him, into Dodger Stadium, which helped. (Note that this doesn't diminish Koufax. Even with the help of his park, his record, looking at run support - another thing James pointed at - is astounding.) Posted by: Eeyore at January 31, 2021 09:23 AM (7X3UV) 62

Still plugging away at "The Scarlatti Inheritance," Ludlum's first novel. Things are starting to move -- rich creep vanishes three weeks after his son is born, along with $270 million in bearer bonds, part of his trust fund. This is in 1926, so that's big money. And a man is killed.
I'm interspersing this with other reading, most recently the much-missed comic "Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre," later retitled "Supernatural Law." One story had Dracula suing to regain a house in New Orleans that is occupied by the vampire novelist Ayn Wrice. (This came out when those novels were all the rage.) Thanks for highlighting my recommendation of Rick Atkinson's book, The British are Coming. It is, as you noted, a whopper--close to 800 pages, but unless you're the type of reader who MUST read endnotes, the book is really only 564 pages. BTW, his previous trilogy was about the three amphibious landings in WWII, to wit: An Army at Dawn; The Day of Battle; and The Guns at Last Light. In my opinion, Atkinson and Antony Beevor are the two best modern, "popular" historians, but Atkinson's books are more reader-friendly. Just sayin'. . . .

Being a fan of anything by Sgt. Mom [Celia Hayes], I ordered her newest, My Dear Cousin, A Novel in Letters.
Two cousins, one who marries and goes with her husband to Malaysia; the other a nursing student who will serve in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, share their experiences via correspondence. Last year I read And if I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II by Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee. Nurses were not always behind the lines, but in the thick of it, as at Anzio. One thing I like is that Sgt Mom catches the atmosphere of the times with little details, such as the nursing students taking a break and smoking -- as did everyone back in the day, and if by chance, you didn't smoke, you could use cigarettes for barter in the war zones. Can't wait to get back to my bedtime reading this evening. Posted by: Alifa at January 31, 2021 09:27 AM (l5Ovp) 73

I am not one of the morons that thinks the one season series is overrated. Yea, Weaton is an ass, but I enjoy the "Verse" he created. I see our current situation as being similar. The "Alliance" vs. the "Browncoats". Everybody in any kind of power is against us, and wants us to "heal". Looks like they started releasing then in 2019, but I missed it. I'm on the second one though it does not look as if they are in a series. A bunch of different authors, and it is taking place between when the TV show ended, and before the move "Serenity". I take it it will be like all the "Star Trek" fiction out there. I did get burned-out on them. On account of there being thousands; and they began changing the dogma of Star Trek. I've been looking for a theory of terraforming alien worlds, and picked
up Douglas Tallamy's Bringing Nature Home as research for that. It's all about how we should use native plants in our yards and gardens. I've been a so-so gardener for a long time, and this book was interesting. He makes the point that insects, including butterflies, are specialists, thus agreeing with Robert Heinlein so that's good. 90 percent of insects, including butterflies, eat only one or two plants. With the incursion of the alien plants we put in our gardens, not to mention invasive aliens, we deprive insects of food. This in turn deprives birds of food, squirrels of nuts, etc, breaking links in the food chain right and left. (Btw, he has a newer book out, but the beginning is borderline hectoring and I might not have read the good stuff if I'd read the new one first.) I'm currently reading Book 2 of 4 of Ian Irvine's The View from the Mirror. I bought the first one over twenty years ago (liked the cover) and never bothered to read it until recently. Turns out to be a pretty decent series so far. It's a somewhat unconventional, yet also quite conventional in many ways, fantasy series. The author deliberately set out to make a series with characters who have more complex motivations for doing things than you might suspect. Every character has their ups and downs. Worth a read if you are looking for something different in fantasy.

To further refine my point, the right generally wants to win whatever fight is upon them and then demobilize and enjoy the fruit of their victory. The left is never happy about anything. Having won one battle, they then begin another, which might actually be about undoing their latest win! Look at how the triumph of feminism is now yielding to the trans movement.
There is no contentment within them, no inner peace, so they export their inner turmoil to everyone else. They used to just cover the back of their hatchbacks with bumper stickers but now they have to have yard signs up all the time. They rotate them, too, because no victory is enough. One I recently read, whom I've never respected on naval history, is Corelli Barnett. He is a picture perfect example of someone who simply ignores or suppresses evidence against his view. And he is always on a "bloody idiots" fixation. E.g., he slams Adm Forbes, in the Norway campaign, for leaving HMS Furious behind, and goes off on a cliched rant about "the cult of the battleship". He ignores the fact that she didn't have any aircraft aboard, having just completed a refit. And note that my sources for that are ones that Barnett himself cites, the Official Histories. OM, would Reverend Warfield recognize the Presbyterian Church today? The congregation I was raised in, became such a SJW-focused church, it lost all its parishioners and the 100 yo church became a restaurant. Heartbreaking how a minister w an agenda, which doesn't focus on his flock, can destroy a church community.

live in Michigan and especially not in a suburb of Detroit. at January 31, 2021 09:38 AM (2JVJo) --- Grosse Pointe is only a "suburb" in the most technical sense. The contrast is striking. Whenever there are problems in Detroit, they close the border, so to speak. (At one point literally blocking a major road and establishing a temporary "farmers market" to justify it.) Beautiful houses built there, most during the auto industry boom of the 1920s. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 31, 2021 09:45 AM (llXky) 131

Zoltan - I loved 36 Righteous Men. That was a good thriller, and yeah, the climate warming you just have to skip over. Grammie Winger - I'm still saving my copies of the Liturgical Mysteries for a treat after I finish this history I'm working on - "The Final Pagan Generation" by Edward L. Watts. It tells the story of a few of the last Roman generation before Christianity fully took root. It's set in the mid-late 300s. After Constantine declared the Christianity the state religion of Rome there were plenty of pagan temples and observances for at least two generations. The people then didn't know they were the last pagan generation. I'm also working through Orwell's 1984 - eerie, the parallels. Posted by: CarolinaGirl at January 31, 2021 09:45 AM (Kh9rg) 133

I agree that the left always goes farther in their zeal, but the right is happy with peace and prosperity. What intellectual debates there were on the right after the Cold War ended were basically desultory and completely without any real passion or energy. We won, and were content with our victory. The left is NEVER content, NEVER happy. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 31, 2021 09:32 AM (llXky) ________ A classic case of success leading to failure. The Reagan years had 2 bad effects. (1) A diversion from political theory to policy. The latter was necessary, sure, But ignoring the former had a cost. The 2nd was origin of what later happened to NR under Lowry. A false narrative of a "fusion" which simply had not existed earlier. That killed the kind of debates that were so great in the 60s and 70s. Can't blame the neocons for this. TAS was much more engaged in the 80s and 90s, and it was also MUCH more oriented toward the neocons. Of course, I keep pointing out that the original neos were very different from the 2nd generation. I've been using reading as an escape from the news, not a unique situation, I'm sure. Anyway, I started thinking about places in literature that were conducive to comfortable reading. Here's my first thoughts. there will be more.
- The House of Tom Bombadil in LOTR - Rivendell in LOTR - the interior of Rocinante from Travels With Charley - sitting room of 221B Baker Street In reality: The house I grew up in was built in the late 1800s and had a large porch across the front. My dad screened it in but it was otherwise open and had comfortable, padded wicker furniture. I loved to read there, especially during rain storms. It was where I first read the Lensman and Skylark series, many of the Heinlein juveniles and Conan stories. It remains a special place in my heart. Was at Wal-Mart the other day for a room humidifier. Three employees didn't know what one was, and two of them couldn't pronounce the word. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 31, 2021 09:28 AM (S7VTO) Heh. My funny WM story of the week: I went into WalMart yesterday in search of some materials to redo the doors of my Lark. I needed some fuzzy material like velour that I could glue into the vertical channel that guides the windows, and I wanted some vinyl to cover the interior door panels with. The old vinyl was damaged, and really, really crisp. I looked at table cloths. Nope, not right. Went into the crafty crafts department, and looked at bolts of material. There was a cute ginger working there, and she was anxious to help. I found a partial roll of grey faux alligator vinyl, and she measured it, declared it to be just under 2 yards, and subject to a discount. So I got 2 yards of 9.88/yd material for 11.86. I thought that was very nice of her. I also found a little remnant of plush material in the bargain basket on the cutting table for about $3, and that filled the bill for lining the glass channel. (works, too) ...next post Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 31, 2021 09:51 AM (mzC78) 158

I've got stories about two female mystery writers.
In the late '50s/early '60s, there were three Miss Marple movies made. The first two were based on Agatha Christie books but the third, Murder Ahoy, was made up by the screenwriters. A scene concerns Miss Marple identifying a poison with a child's chemistry set. Anybody who has ever heard the word "science" could see how laughably inaccurate it was (climate scientists excepted). For example, she believes it might be an inhaled poison that caused the victim's death so she sniffed it! Christie often used poison to dispatch her victims and, indeed, she was much praised for her accurate depiction of the use of poison in her first Hercule Poirot novel, The Mysterious Affair At Styles. No wonder she was accurate. During WWI (and again in WWII) she was a chemist/pharmacist in military hospitals. It must have killed her to see that laughable chemistry scene in that movie. Mary Roberts Rinehart, "the American Agatha Christie", is credited with the phrase "the butler did it" although that exact phrase does not appear in her book The Door. Ironically, she herself was almost murdered by her (almost) butler. A long-term employee, disappointed at being passed over for a promotion to butler, went crazy and tried to kill her. More detail at link.
https://bit.ly/39y9eP7 P.S. You may better know Rinehart as the author of The Spiral Staircase, a novel that has been reduced to film at least twice. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler at January 31, 2021 10:00 AM (VVEnO) 192

The other day we were assembling items in case of a power failure due to winter storms. Batteries top the list for lanterns, flashlights and radios. But we also have several oil lamps and a good supply of beeswax candles. It reminded me of the times I've used those for reading. The illumination is so different from electric lights and takes some getting used to. But it was very pleasant and relaxing to read by the less garish light of the lamps and candles. I should set up a time to use them when it's not a necessity.

Breitbart has a story, which I found on Vox Day's site this morning, about a Washington Post story. They went out with the "expert truck" (Mr. Show reference) and found some so-called expert on Art and Architecture. Then they made a whole story about how we shouldn't allow President Trump to even build a Presidential Library at all, ever. After all, this Art and Architecture expert nobody says that it would be dangerous to America, and we should listen to him.

...so I go to the self checkout. The plush remnant rings up correctly, as did the tub of candy that WM conned me into buying by cleverly placing it in my path, but the part-roll of vinyl rang in at 9.88, instead of the expected 11.86. The cute ginger in the craft department had warned me to be sure to scan the yellow discount sticker she had applied instead of the white sticker, which was a unit price, per yard, of course.
I called on the attending checkout help to get the price corrected. She was kind of dumbfounded that I wanted to pay almost two whole dollars more for the stuff, and didn't really seem to get the concept of unit pricing at all. She voided the original scan, scanned the yellow tag again, and it also came up "9.88" despite the plain-text "11.86" on the yellow tag. So I had her void the scan again, and manually enter the price as 11.86, and she was quite pissed off for me having her go to the effort to do so. That is one of several interesting bits where O'Brian is saying that, though intellectuals will identify with Stephen, Jack is every bit a smart. He just lacks the education Stephen had. That, from my historical reading, is an accurate picture of a weakness of RN officers of the day, when dealing with soldiers and pols. (The Hood brothers were an exception.)

I have to confess I am not optimistic about the intellectual trend of conservatism. We too are switching, as I mentioned happened in the 80s, from the kind of fights that keep the mind active. It may be necessary under the circs, but it'll carry a cost as it did then. One that I see clearly is making a contingent policy matter into a philosophy. Another is creating our own bubbles. And, of course, building fanciful pictures of the "patterns" of history.

I've mentioned this book before, but if anyone is looking for a recommendation, I suggest Thomas Stevens' Around the World On a Bicycle. Stevens was a "wheelman" who left SanFran in 1884 on a "penny-farthing" bike and pedaled around the world. The book is his travelogue. It's very entertaining, especially when he gets into the Near East and the wilds of Bulgaria, where he has to worry about his bike being stolen or himself being killed by roving bandits. I stopped when he was in Armenia and haven't picked up the book in several years. I was just thinking I could use the escape.

I too have read "The British Are Coming". It is outstanding: thorough, well-researched, readable - popular history at its best. If there's any "woke" crap in it, I didn't see it. And while Atkinson's book clearly is patriot-centric, he presents all facets of the war - patriot, loyalist, British, French. Like all revolutions, it was also a civil war, and, like all civil wars, it got ugly at times. Further, he takes the trouble to look at the dilemma of enslaved blacks: British forces were offering them manumission in return for coming over to their side, but for them it was also one hell of a risk, given the ferocity of the reprisals against them if they failed to get away. Like I said, ugly at times. A very good book, well worth reading, particularly these days, when the Left is hellbent on rewriting our history as a lie.

Am still enjoying The Shipping News, especially the portrayal of a huge drunkfest of a party where some previously unidentified random character leads a mob to destroy the sailboat of the host who'd planned on heading out south for warmer climes (although truthfully I thought there was NFW that would've worked when he planned on doing it).
Btw, the next book club read is my choice of The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien after the excellent past book thread recommendation of At Swim Two Birds, still one of the most unique books I've ever read. Posted by: Captain Hate Won't Forget Ashli Babbitt at January 31, 2021 10:42 AM (y7DUB) 337
The hedge fund people act in collusion, and leverage each other so it really is a house of cards. The most obvious sign is that these "naked shorts" happen and none of the other players take advantage of it to make a fortune, instead they each take turns doing it to siphon money off regular investors.. I just finished reading a series of five books by a moron friend named John Hundley. They give an interesting twist on werewolves vs. vampires. Not my usual genre, but good character development and a good allegory for deplorables vs. commofascists. The final book, Cargo, has werewolf in space theme. Right now the first book in the series, The Draculata Nest is only 1.99 on Amazon(spit).

Interestingly enough, the pharm people don't get sued very much. Because medicine is inherently unsafe for a small percentage of the population, they have special protections. As long as the public has "informed consent" of the possibility of side effects, they can't be successfully sued. That's why you see those drug commercials that list all the things that go wrong. Good morning, horde! I'm snowed in here.
I have a slightly different take on the books about WWII female heroes than OM does. While I agree that focusing exclusively on the women distorts historical perspective, I also think it might do young females a world of good to read about women who faced very real terrors bravely. If the Nazis caught them spying or helping the Resistance, the price they paid was not a Twitter storm, being unfriended on FB, or being addressed by the wrong pronoun. It was torture and death. I recently saw a documentary about an amazing New Zealand woman, Nancy Wake, who had more guts and balls than every single sniveling leftist put together. Nancy Wake's story should be known to everyone. Telling it doesn't take anything away from the brave men who also fought the Nazis. She was a privileged expat who could have chosen not to put herself at risk - and yet she did, repeatedly. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V at January 31, 2021 10:45 AM (HabA/) 349

Since dystopian futures are in the mix... as of tomorrow, possession of "user" amounts of drugs such as meth and heroin are de-criminalized here in Oregon. I know that some Morons who lean libertarian will not object, and there are even more who recognize the basic failure of the "war on drugs." Having said that, I think it's going to make an increasingly crappy state even worse. We already have tent cities and shanty towns full of addicts; I can guarantee we will have a second wave of drug immigrants like the first one we had when marijuana was legalized.

So what do you think of "Cultural Amnesia?" It's certainly difficult to try to describe it. Sometimes, the meanderings of James irritated me ("I thought this was supposed to be about Sophie Scholl. Why are you going on about Natalie Portman?") sometimes, they give you a perspective you didn't have before. And that book certainly introduced me to a lot of artists and thinkers I had never heard of before - like the largely Jewish crowd who made up Viennese literary cafe society destroyed by the Nazis. Intellectuals. Both in different ways, have struggled with their words matching their deeds, and this is a common problem for intellectuals. What's even more difficult for them, apparently, is interpreting current events, and trying to apply their principles with anything like coherence. The subject of Trump came up. I spotted Celeste Holm, but didn't join in on the thread until just now. Good work, CN!
I'm reading a novel a co-worker gifted me some years ago called Dissolution. It's a historical mystery set in Tudor England during the reign of King Henry and his creation of the new church and dissolution of the monasteries. On a commission from Lord Cromwell, Matthew Shardlake investigates the murder of the previous commissioner sent to check out a monastery in the south of England. The commissioner was beheaded, and a rooster was sacrificed on the altar of the church. And when a novice at the monasteries dies, Shardlake has a second murder to investigate. I'd thought it would be dull, but it isn't. The people don't talk like 20th-century people, but they also don't orate in faux-Shakespeare. Finished a couple horde recommendations here last week:
The Man in Lower Ten by Mary Reinhart Roberts Pitching In The Pinch by Christie Matthewson Man in Lower Ten was very fun to read, its fun and witty and the mystery is not particularly challenging but was interesting with a lot of twists. This particular book did something I don't really like (foreshadowing "I was to come to regret that but more on that later...") but was a nice read anyway. I don't get any comparisons with Agatha Christie whatsoever, despite Mary Richards being called the American Christie. I guess just because she was a female mystery author, but she's a much more enjoyable, fun read but has much less dense and confusing mystery plots. My morning began with a search for my cell phone, which took awhile because I wasn't looking in the right places (funny that), but it took a positive turn when I saw Panther (the black kitteh of the 4-some who have been showing up lately). He was trotting off when I tapped the window. He stopped, turned, sat down, and stared at me for a few moments before resuming his trot (although in a different direction). The woman who is fostering "Pretty Girl", the little Maine coon mix I'm adopting next Friday said that a lot of people got cats during House Arrest but then let them go when they realized maybe getting a bong would've been a better idea than a living creature. Pitching In The Pinch (or, Baseball From The Inside) was a blast, great fun to read. Matthewson loves to understate things in a humorous way (if you read between the lines you can hear the less polite version of events) and loves the sport. Written in 1911 its a glimpse into a distant past, when baseball greats like Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Mordecai Brown, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Tinker, Evans, Chance, and many others were playing.
Matthewson gives a glimpse inside the game and how its played on the field, so much so that I wondered at times how much he was giving away of signs, strategy, and theory of baseball that then-manager McGraw was using. There are some wonderful old stories but the most interesting are the ones that reveal how different the game was back then. For example he tells of a player on the Giants who was so aggressive on the base paths that the 3rd base coach would literally tackle him and put him back on 3rd so he wouldn't run himself into an out. The late Jacques Barzun once said that one of the worst things to happen to the universities was that during WWII, they climbed in bed with the government and specialists and experts started spending a lot of time in DC. Although that might have been unavoidable at the time, it gave academics a taste of power and the concern of the universities became extending their influence in DC, not educating the young. He said that's when the habit of leaving undergrads to be taught by TAs began, because the distinguished profs were scrounging for research money and grants and couldn't be bothered with teaching. I had the opportunity finally to finish 1620: A Critical Response to the 1619 Project, by Peter Wood. Wood is president of the National Association fo Scholars (member since 199 and has marshaled a forceful, complete, and devastating academic takedown of the 1619 Project.
Which will, of course, make no difference to the agitation-prop wing, who are busy installing this curriculum nation-wide. Wood gathers works from distinguished American History scholars which devastate the NY Times argument that slavery is the defining characteristic of America, pointing out specific errors, mis-leading innuendo, and drastically incorrect over-generalizations. It's a great work which will be ignored by the Leftists running the government schools. In terms of cost, quality, and longevity, all replacements to incandescents have proven inferior. CFLs are obviously stupid, LEDs that are supposed to last 10 years have failing regulator circuits after 5 mos, halogens burn out far short of their rated life, and even the remaining candlebra incandescent bulbs in the main are a bitch to replace because the cement between base and bulb dries out and the whole thing pulls apart. Gotta go all Marcellus, with a pair of pliers and a bad attitude. And all of these are several dollars per bulb. In the good old early W days, regular incandescent edisons were less than 50 cents each, lasted longer, and didn't crumble in your hands on removal.

they rub elbows with these evil men, maybe go to the cocktail parties, and don't realize how ruthless and vile men in tuxes can be when they take their covert grand actions. e.g. Strzok undermining Trump from within, TeamMueller running coup on lies, imprisoning innocent men in Enron-- ... Murder is in their repertoire poor Seth, Whitey had it coming, but still, these are treacherous men intent on ? -- global domination apparently.
Posted by: illiniwek at January 31, 2021 11:43 AM (Cus5s) Hate to say it, but so many of these people, the ones in academia, are socially awkward, and therefore quite susceptible to the honey pot. One way or another. I think that explains a lot about how many of them are corrupted beyond redemption. Mueller in particular, he was gotten to many years before he became the Deep State's "Gun For Hire." Posted by: BurtTC at January 31, 2021 11:57 AM (oQ94s) 564
Sansom isn't my favorite medieval mystery author. I like the Hugh Corbett series by Paul Doherty better, and Michael Jecks much better.

"There was an fascinating discussion on the thought process that must have been in place, when Chamberlain sat down with Hitler, and made "peace in our time."
My thesis is that Neville was aware of Hitler's thinking in Mein Kampf and was content so long as Hitler was pointed East. Prove me wrong. Had France and England not ineffectually declared war on Germany over Poland -- when Stalin took half -- it would have played differently. Recall that even Hitler's generals didn't expect France to fall, let alone so quickly. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 31, 2021 11:58 AM (9TdxA) 566

Cobb got a reputation for being especially nasty on the basepads, but really, spiking the second baseman and players charging into the stands to fight with people in the crowd were pretty common. It was definitely a contact sport then and a rough game. I recall one story about how visiting players were transported from their hotels via horse-drawn carts to the ballpark. There was no place to change at the ballpark so they wore their uniforms. That ride to the ballpark got rather nasty when the Cardinals were riding though the streets of Chicago on the way to Wrigley, or the Cubs were in St. Louis. They got rotten eggs and vegetables thrown at them. Imagine Rizzo on the back of a wagon, trying to dodge rotten eggs on the way to Busch stadium, lol. Posted by: BurtTC at January 31, 2021 11:34 AM (oQ94s) Agreed. I don't think intellectuals - of any stripe - can bear the thought that words are, in the end, worthless. And yet they must know that words didn't stop Hitler. Tanks and planes and allied troops did. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V at January 31, 2021 11:41 AM (HabA/) The left has cornered the market on words. They own most all of the means of production and transportation of words. They can now snap words into and out of existence at will. I know a lot of 'rons and 'ettes swear by the keto diet, but I dunno, every time I see Peterson, I feel like someone should give him a bowl of mashed potatoes and a big slice of chocolate cake.)
I've been trying to do the keto diet. But I think I cheat so much that I never suffer any of the ill effects of it. mmmm, sweet little baby potatoes with butter and sour cream - Posted by: Tom Servo at January 31, 2021 12:00 PM (V2Yro) 571
How many of us who condemn Chamberlain (and rightly so) survived the horrors of WWI? Imagine what it was like at 11:11 on 11/11 1918. Imagine having survived trench warfare and gassing. Then add 20 years of technological improvements, especially airplanes which went from barely-moving forward biplanes to single-wing fighters and bombers that were sci-fi in 1918. There were a lot of people whose decision-making was governed by the horror of the Great War. They could not fathom what was to come.

Matthewson goes into considerable detail about sliding and spiking and in his opinion only a couple of players (he does not mention Cobb) ever were really aggressive with the spikes and he doesn't think any of them deliberately went into cause harm, only to intimidate. There's been some rethinking of Ty Cobb in recent years, as it appears 99% of his reputation came from one disgruntled writer. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 31, 2021 12:02 PM (KZzsI) 575
Further on that 1620 book, Wood mentions that VDH and other scholars were working on a parallel project, later promoted by PDJT, call the 1776 Commission. Biden personally denounced this even-handed discussion of American history as 'racist' and had the report stripped from the White House the very first day in office.
You will embrace Critical Race Theory with joy, Citizens. Posted by: motionview at January 31, 2021 11:57 AM (pYQR/) I think we need to stop allowing the communists behind the Biden adminstration to continue using Biden as the fall guy for all the EO's. I don't believe he has any idea what he is signing. This stuff has been written up during the last four years in Obama's mansion in DC. Remember, he was guesting Jarrett and others in that place after he bought it ( or Soros bought it or whomever). As Biden famously said, Barack told him "Joe you don't have to do this". They were looking for the front for themselves, and Biden was risky, but the reward was an easy to use idiot. I think that is why they had to get rid of Bernie, Tulsi, and Klobuchar. They would not have been able to simply place order after order in front of them and have them sign it. Posted by: Jen the original at January 31, 2021 12:04 PM (g7x/A) 576

Posted by: SFGoth at January 31, 2021 12:00 PM (KAi1n) True. There was a very real fear in France in 1940 that if France went through another world war, the country would not survive. They would run out of young men. The demographics show that was not unfounded. France lost as many men as the Germans did in WWI but Germany had many more people. Currently re-reading The Lord of the Rings, and I'm noticing some things I'd either forgotten or never seen. Also interesting to compare it to the movies.
The first part of Fellowship of the Ring is very much "the sequel to the Hobbit," about a bunch of hobbits off on a jolly adventure getting lost in the woods and whatnot. There's a big shift in tone when they meet Strider. Suddenly the hobbits -- and the reader -- find out that it's not just fun and games anymore. Experiment for the future: what if you start reading there? Also: the movie actually handles King Theoden's affliction and cure much better than the book. Jackson actually puts in some tension there, whereas Tolkein just has Gandalf barge right in and solve everything in about a page. On the other hand, the movie absolutely screws over Faramir. In the book he's the one who says that if he saw the Ring lying in the road he wouldn't even pick it up. Faramir knows what his brother learned too late. What would have happened if he'd been the one sent north instead of his brother? Presumably he shows up in Rivendell, says "let's dump the suck in Mount Doom -- who's with me?" and gets the job done by Christmas. Posted by: Trimegistus at January 31, 2021 12:07 PM (QZxDR) 578

There are things that the films did better than the books, but Faramir is definitely not one of them. Why Jackson decided to utterly violate that section of the books I have no clue.

Here's a video on the blandness of modern horror story covers that applies across genres, in my opinion:
https://tinyurl.com/y6qulwsl Now that they've moved from painted covers illustrating the story to generic but pretty images with big lettering, they've lost the visceral thrill of picking up a genre book. I am a big fan of the Battle of New Orleans history, have visited the museum. That period of US history was a fascinating one due to the fact that the US was almost extinct, but for Gen. Jackson's victory there. The minor detail that truce had already been agreed to at The Hague some weeks earlier matters not. Thanks for the suggestion.

There was an fascinating discussion on the thought process that must have been in place, when Chamberlain sat down with Hitler, and made "peace in our time." It's certainly possible to condemn Chamberlain, and obviously he was dead wrong... but at the time? What must that have been like? To be in that room, with that guy who was OBVIOUSLY very persuasive. And I hate to make these comparisons, but it seems we must. We HAVE to be able to look in the eyes of evil, and at the very least recognize it when we see it.
Posted by: BurtTC at January 31, 2021 11:51 AM (oQ94s) I get a little tired of this excuse that Hitler had this unique ability to override the thinking of everyone around him - the German generals use it all the time in their excuse making while pretending they opposed him all the time. There were plenty of those around who saw through him at the time, Churchill for example, but Chamberlain was not close to him. European statesmen had been merrily chopping up states for a long time for their purposes so there was nothing special about Munich - just that Adolf didn't play the game and keep still for a while after getting it. Warfield's great, but it's not light reading, for sure. He was a tremendous theologian, and for the most part, a clear thinker and writer, but, unlike a CS Lewis, he was largely writing for theologians, and sometimes it takes some time to tease out the exact context.
And it's always fun to mention the full name - B.B. is obviously much easier to remember and relate than Benjamin Breckenridge, but the latter is just fun... Posted by: Lyford at January 31, 2021 07:49 PM (UFj/5) 590
