He IS the sniper. His rifle is broken down and hidden in the coat. He's headed to his hide site on the roof.

Actually...

That would make a good story. One of Her Majesty's officers, sent in mufti to take out some bad guy or other, passes and is smitten by a lovely young lass on his way to the hit. Little does he know that she is the (probably niece) of the dastardly lowlife he has been dispatched to dispatch, and their paths with cross again, testing both his and her loyalties to Queen, country and family.

96 I really like this painting. The delicate tones of the lady's face, the details in the building and their clothing, the hint of 'polite' interest in the man's face, they all combine to make an interesting portrait. The way it suggests a story makes it suitable for an excellent book illustration.

This is the kind of painting that makes me wish I could learn how long it took to complete and what colors were used, and how they were combined. Yes, I can be a nerd.

Actually in a hyperinflation scenario of a fiat currency, one should do just that--spend it immediately on concrete goods before it depreciates further. We are not there yet, but if all of the spending that the current regime goes through, we will take a giant step forward on that.

However, I think that the Bloomberg opinion writer is using classic Keynesian admonitions tinged with socialist complaints using hoarders and wreckers charges against savers. Keynes never really got the savings and investment right in his theory. He was focused on the demand side.

It's why governments love it so much - free money so long as you spend, spend, spend. The Chicago School doesn't understand savings and investment, either because they treat most or all debt as self-liquidating and thus they miss credit-fueled inflation.

While it's possible to admire the skill, to me the effect is lost. It's too perfect, and whatever "art" there is to be captured, the artist lacks that piece of the thing, in the recreation of reality in such a precise manner.

It's almost like one of those autistic folks who can hear a piano piece once, and then sit down and recreate all the notes. Technically spectacular, artistically cold and barren.

357 My (incomplete) understanding is that Reddit users found out that hedge funds drastically short-sold GME (Gamestop) stock on margin.

Reddit and 4chan retail users dumped money into buying GME, knowing that the hedge funds will be forced to purchase the pumped up stock at dramatic losses once their options come due.

Apparently, one of the hedge funds involved (Melvin Capital) have already received a capital injection. There is a game of chicken right now as to whether the holders of GME stock will hold through friday (when the hedge funds are forced to purchase the stock), or whether, enough people dump the stock beforehand.

Reddit and 4chan retail users dumped money into buying GME, knowing that the hedge funds will be forced to purchase the pumped up stock at dramatic losses once their options come due.

Apparently, one of the hedge funds involved (Melvin Capital) have already received a capital injection. There is a game of chicken right now as to whether the holders of GME stock will hold through friday (when the hedge funds are forced to purchase the stock), or whether, enough people dump the stock beforehand.

even ebay has legit sellers, you have to check their history. Most decent size cities have guys who specialize in trading gold. A pawn shop might be ok but you likely have a guy that deals in gold more often than the average pawn shop. And there are plenty of online gold sellers. I won't into that others can give advice there.

yes all dealers mark up so they can stay in business. A legit dealer will tell you exactly what bullion is going for, what he is selling or buying at what weight, and how much of a markup he is getting.

Shorting is easier to understand than people make it out to be. It is trading in shares rather than money, and it is how you make money when a stock moves down. In essence:
1) Borrow a share of the stock. You borrowed the share, not the value of it.
2) Sell the share
3) Buy the share back
4) Return the share to the owner

The difference in price between #2 and #3 is your profit or loss. Shorting is dangerous because you can lose more than your initial investment. A long position (that is, a normal purchase) has a maximum loss of 100% if the stock goes to zero. Shorts, though, can lose many multiple of the original investment if things go pear-shaped (e.g., borrow at $10 a share, sell it, then the stock takes off and you have to buy it back at $100 a share to return the borrow).

445 Shorts, though, can lose many multiple of the original investment if
things go pear-shaped (e.g., borrow at $10 a share, sell it, then the
stock takes off and you have to buy it back at $100 a share to return
the borrow).

which is what is happening now. GME was about $20 a share 6 weeks ago, with it predicted to drop back down to around $4 a share where it had been before. So the hedge funds saw the short opportunity, and actually borrwed over 200% of the shares . And then 4chan and Reddit got involved and it closed at $147 yesterday and is now around $350. If you shorted it, you have to buy it back at the current price. Oops.

Shorting a stock: One sells a stock against future purchase. Say the stock has a market value, currently, of $10. One sells the stock for $5, expecting the stock to go to $3, so that when it comes time to purchase the stock, one pays the current market value of $3, therefore, making money on the difference between selling price and actual purchase price.

However, where people get stung is shorting a stock, and having it either not go down as much as expected, or,worse, goes the opposite direction.

Basically, investors are selling stocks against future purchase and gambling on the future price of the stock.

At least, that's my understanding.

Good luck getting a borrow. I doubt you *can* short GSE right now (not with a new position, anyway). It'll blow up hugely after Friday. This isn't an investment right now, or even a trade. It is a targeted action against a single player (a squeeze). If they hold out until that player collapses (which will happen on Friday, if I understand it correctly) then there's point and the selling action will be huge and luxurious. That's when the people on the long side will take their losses, and they will be big on average (though given the number of the players in on the squeeze, it won't hurt any given individual much - they're all in it for the lulz).

close, it is complicated and hard to keep straight lol. If the stock you
sold goes up, you have to buy it back and you lose. If it goes down,
you can buy it lower and make a profit. the big issue here is margin
calls. Whenever the price reaches a certain level, short sellers who
used margin (borrowed money) have to pay more to stay in the game. That
is what kills them in the end. They are using borrowed money and at some
point, someone says, F you, pay me.

There is a movie called the Hummingbird Effect tht is about 2 dudes building their own pipe between Kansas and NYC to gain 1 millisecond of speed in their trades. It is fictionalized but the underlying concept is real.

518 Otter is correct.

Shorting is more risky than an option or buying and holding a stock (going long).

Under a short, you borrowed a stock from a shareholder and sold at X price because you believe the market will go lower and you will be able to sell at the new lower price y. The amount you make is x-y=profit.

If the stock goes higher, then the whole thing is reversed potentially until infinity. You borrowed the stock and sold it at price x, then you have to rebuy it at whatever the market price is when your borrowed stock shares have to be returned to the original shareholder. Thus, you are on the hook for the difference between the current higher market price Z and the original stock price X. Z-X= your losses which can be many multiples of your investment buying at X. GME is close to $300 per share so if you bought the stock at $20 bucks per share to short it, you are on the hook for $280 per share loss when your short contract expires.

Not really. If the sale was made high, then you pay the lender back and still have a profit. If selling low or at a price lower than when you bought, then you're fucked if the lender wants their money back.

Sometimes the lender will let it ride, it's up to them and your reputation of making money for them too.

The lender holds the cards. They can demand there money back either way and at any time.

No, just NO.

There is no way, in a straight "short sale" transaction, the person who initiates the "short" loses money if the stock goes down.
