Posted by: Jmel at January 21, 2021 08:10 PM (jcTaI) Guy on Youtube who goes by Captain Capitalism summed up the college thing well: go STEM, go trades, or go home. Liberalism or no, if she's backing out of a $200K literature degree or something equally useless before paying all that money it'll be to her benefit in the long run. Most corporate jobs that would accept such a degree don't actually pay very well when one considers both the cost of the degree and the high cost of living in and around the corporate office parks. I'm thinking $150k per inmate for a thorough re-education. But, I'll absolutely guarantee results, and zero recidivism. Of course, D.C. will be a bit miffed when I send 'em that crate with the heads of various VIP dems, journalists and activists, but hey, a deal is a deal. Dislike all you want, but true hate is the flip of love, and it kills you before it kills the object of your hate. So a good buddy's daughter just graduated last year from a state U, and her degree was in writing, communications or something. DNK what exactly, but her skill is in writing and she is good.
She is a really smart kid, way above her peers in general knowledge, and thinks independently. Was talking with her a few months ago, and said the propaganda was really bad. Then she would come home from school, talk with her dad a few days, and got straightened out. Other than STEM, there is really no reason for colleges to be teaching much else, it's just propaganda at this point. That's what Social Media is for now. And it doesn't cost money. I didn't do the colors in the house. The second wife had a photo of a ship on blue water, with that color purple in it. So they painted the bathroom purple. And it got repainted the same color when we redid the house. I like purple so I think it's great, but I won't be the one painting over it.

Late to the generator discussion but
Several things to consider. If your generator runs on natural gas, you may have to upgrade your service line to your house or you may have to upsize your pipe depending on the gas demand of the generator and where you locate it. Similar issue for propane, how much are you going to run it, and where do you locate it. For example, a 10-12 kw generator uses about 2.6 gal of propane per hour and needs a 3/4 to 1 inch service line. Generators are cheaper to install near your present service mast and meter. Yeah stuff cooled down a hell of a lot with Trump in office. There's a lot to be said for a president that people consider slightly crazy in power. Half the world was terrified Reagan would nuke them even if by accident. They were certain Trump was a live wire, who knows what he'd do. But Biden? Much less Harris? Nuke NYC and they'd apologize for being so provocative. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 21, 2021 09:02 PM (KZzsI) 287
There are new automatic transfer switches (ats) that run about 5-600 that will allow you to avoid a daughter breaker box or having to use a lockout device on your existing breaker box. These new load shifting ats devices allow full 100, 150, and 200 amp power to go to your existing breaker box and use computer modules on high demand electric devices to switch them on and off to keep the load on the generator lower. Thus, you can buy a smaller generator (less fuel and cost) without worrying about manually switching on and off breakers or overloading your generator.
Make sure to analyze your site location (code issues apply to avoid fire and carbon monoxide infiltration), service location, parts and service availability, and set up a power budget to size your generator. Generator manufacturers often have a pre done web app that helps you size your generator properly. Posted by: whig at January 21, 2021 09:02 PM (pO7gM) 288

One last thing, if you have a tractor with a pto, you can also get fairly substantial generators for less than you would pay otherwise that are capable of running a whole house.
Generac is a decent brand with an existing service and parts network, Briggs and Stratton is an up and coming brand that motor parts at least are available everywhere. Kohler and Honeywell are two other standby generator companies. More limited service network and parts for these, the last that I checked. CaliGirl, an ATS (automatic transfer switch) transitions automatically between generator and line power and avoids backfeed which can kill a power company lineman trying to fix power lines.
Some are now smart and can adjust loads by turning off and on electric high demand appliances such as a hot water heater, stove, or ac. You can even assign priorities to these devices. That way it balances the load and avoids kicking off the main breaker and you can manage with a smaller kw generator than you would otherwise need. Hot water recirculation system -- gives you nearly instant hot water at the taps. I thought it was great, until I started looking at the power usage. The new house is on a slab with PEX plumbing, most of it under the slab. Those pipes are thus surrounded by dirt under the slab. No insulation (and I don't know what if any would be suitable for direct burial). The heat loss was unbelievable. I still can hardly believe it but it was putting an average load of 1 kW on the system. This was pushing the daily average load over 3kW, and that's getting into some money. I measured the temperature drop on the loop, and it was losing 4-5 degrees F on the round trip, and the little recirculator pump is about 1GPM. With a 50 gallon water, that's about 50 minutes to lower the temperature of the whole thing 5F. And that's exactly what it was doing. The water heater was coming on about once per hour and running for 10+ minutes. Manual transfer switches are the cheapest by far compared to automatic. That's what I'd do. Backfeeding lines is a problem. Usually, if there's a short or even heavy load on the downed/faulted high voltage distribution lines, one little generator would just trip out trying to feed it. But for isolated lines with little load, backfeeding can be a problem. Duke around here has specific grounding protocols the lineman follow just to handle that possibility. A common option is to put an "emergency subpanel" in. You put your "emergency loads" -- things you want to run off the generator on that. Fridge, freezer, etc, etc. Now, you put a transfer switch on that, and they even make special generator panels with all that built in -- usuallly an interlocking breaker arrangement. Those are relatively cheap. You wire that to the main panel, and the other feed to a generator inlet, and power the subpanel off the generator during the power outage. 364 Ouch 8-ball. Sorry.
Briggs has some innovative inclusions in their ATS as it also comes with Symphony load management and it switches on and off high demand electric appliances according to a priority program that you can alter. It allows you a cheaper install as most of them run full 100-250 amp so no daughter breaker box or lockout install on your main is needed. But, with them in chapter 11, quality usually slides. 286 Yeah stuff cooled down a hell of a lot with Trump in office. There's a lot to be said for a president that people consider slightly crazy in power. Half the world was terrified Reagan would nuke them even if by accident. They were certain Trump was a live wire, who knows what he'd do.
----------- Trump was at his best on the foreign stage, where he actually got some respect. He led like Presidents used to do, open with a strong position, then move to make a deal to turn a confrontation into a negotiation. Shoot, he met Kim Jon Un face to face....after warning him that in terms of nuclear parity the USA could afford to lose a city because in turn the USA could destroy the DPRK entirely. On reality check delivered, but the summit (which was mocked by MSM) got him mad respect. Ditto with making NATO play nice, winding down the action in Iraq without looking weak or abandoning allies, and making the PRC pay for its bullying behavior. But the world leaders know Biden is an empty suit available to the highest bidder, and Harris is a nonentity with no understanding of foreign policy. Here comes trouble again.... Another thing people need to know about a generator is neighbors can stop you from using it depending on your location. My electrician told me he was installing one in town for an elderly lady and the neighbor came and yelled at him. He had to get a permit? From the county and it couldn't be louder than 60 decibels at the property line. It wasn't and the county approved it.

We built our house 15 years ago and I had it wired for a generator. Just basics like furnace, lights, fridge, etc. We had extra breaker space so we did a bathroom and several outlets.
A few years later I started brewing beer. Got a beer fridge and a legging system and was having a ball. One day the power went out and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we put the beer fridge on one of the outlets that was wired for the generator! It was totally by accident. God really wanted me to have cold beer from a keg, is the moral of that story! Posted by: 496 at January 21, 2021 09:41 PM (U1eOr) 429
I hate to say it but we need to start discouraging our younger folks about joining the service. The cost benefit ratio seems out whack, more downsides to joining up at this time I think then ever. Look at how the NG was used and abused for the last week. All for some political theater.

We feel incredibly betrayed: Thousands of Guardsmen forced to vacate Capitol Thousands of National Guardsmen were forced to vacate congressional grounds on Thursday and are now taking their rest breaks outside and in nearby parking garages, after two weeks of sleepless nights protecting the nations capital in the wake of the violent assault on Jan. 6. One unit, which had been resting in the Dirksen Senate Office building, was abruptly told to vacate the facility on Thursday, according to one Guardsman. The group was forced to rest in a nearby parking garage without internet reception, with just one electrical outlet, and one bathroom with two stalls for 5,000 troops, the person said. 405 So, big fan of Iron Maiden, then?
Yes, but all the greats do it. IM is probably the most creative but Metallica, Judas Priest, all of them do it. Even quasi-metal bands like Queensryche have fascinating song topics. AC/DC is mostly about getting laid and drunk but they have some fun ====== I changed my mind big time about heavy metal after I learned that Led Zeppelin made songs inspired by LOTR, and Iron Maiden & Metallica were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. They made it easy to get into the music, and be impressed by a lot of the instrumental work, which was more mighty than expected.
