New Realities [KT]

bernieee.jpg

Remember Ace's post a while ago on the essay in Tablet, "Everything is Broken"? Recommended reading.

The article rambles about the Silicon Valley drive to make everything "flat" -- basically, all the same, without place or purpose, because that's the Silicon Valley ideal.

We're no longer rooted in any particular place or culture. Such things are too complicated for FaceBook profiles. The real world has been made to conform with the limitations of the fake digital world -- by removing people's individuality.

It has made them flat, because Google's algorithms cannot try to sell shit to three-dimensional people.

Well, one thing mentioned in that piece is how Silicon Valley has enabled other individuals or groups to quickly transform peoples' views on things like the trustworthiness of Iran or the biological difference between the sexes. On the latter point, this suggests that the media (and everyone else) has to be nimble in keeping up with the latest orthodoxies since Pelosi led her colleagues in removing gendered language from congressional documents and so forth.

firstfem.jpg

Anyway, Assistant Village Idiot has wrestled through an essay by Rod Dreher on Reality vs. Pseudo-Realities which I think relates to the above piece in terms of the speed with which people can come to accept new views of the world. Dreher quotes heavily from a piece by James Lindsay.

Whatever you think of Dreher and Lindsay, I think you should read the piece by Assistant Village Idiot, because I think it is relevant to the current discombobulation of many in the QAnon set, as well as to the increased aggressiveness of The Woke. Here is a quote:

Because "universal compliance" is mentioned, I will insert a long-held thought of mine I think important in this context. We contrast the free market and communism as if they are on all fours, making excuses for the latter because conditions have never been right and the attempts have always been undermined by other forces. But this is precisely the point. Communism works only when it is applied perfectly, without corruption, with wise rulers upon a deeply moral population. When do we expect those conditions to occur? OTOH, The free market works even though it is always applied with imperfect means, some corruption, unexpected events, and incompetent implementation, however slowly and partially that "works" is. So too with Wokeness and the pseudo-realities of the Right, like QAnon.* They cannot work until everyone is made to comply, so the energy is directed into making people comply rather than providing evidence that the machine actually makes widgets. How can we expect it to make widgets when everyone has not yet gotten into line?

Related: Daniel Greenfield, This is how conservatives get erased.

* UPDATE: Commenters have made what I think is a good assessment that typical QAnon enthusiasts do not demand compliance from the entire population. There are some credible reports that some of them reject family members for questioning their theories (suggesting that they are in league with "the enemy" and so forth). And some of their theories seem to require very specific actions on the part of certain other people. We haven't seen the predicted results because those people have not gotten in line with the actions required by the theories.

COVID-19

This is not what he said during his campaign, but Biden now says that there is nothing they can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic.

Fortunately, others will cover for him.

The Military

Biden Tells Freezing Troops Sleeping In Garages To Be Patient Until He Can Get Them Shipped To Iraq.

In the real world, Biden has sent more troops into Syria. I'm not sure that this signals a return to an Obama policy of regime change. Might be a bit premature for that kind of a conclusion. But the historical details at the link are interesting and since this is a Smart Military Blog, I thought it might be an interesting topic for discussion.

So, what happened to the insurrection? Maybe I'm jinxing it, but the
wave of violence many expected didn't materialize before or on
Inauguration Day; there were hardly any demonstrators. Where did all
the rage go?Greenwald: Oh, gosh, I hope this doesn't mean the
magnitude of the threat has been wildly exaggerated for political gain,
media excitement and ratings, censorship orgies, and laying the
foundation for a new fear-driven Domestic War on Terror to control
politics and information.

He was impeached when he was still president. The question is whether he can be tried now that he's no longer president. And I suppose there's no point in saying (as we'd have to for as long as he's there) that Biden isn't doing anything.

The military industrial complex is its own monster, and has been for some time now. It goes where it wants, it consumes what it wants, it sets its own policy.

The failure of Trump to rein it in was as clear an indication that Presidents don't really run things that we're ever going to get.

71 Regarding the military link, "Biden" is going to fuck around and (a) get Israel frontally attacked and (b) cause ISIS attacks to renew on American soil. God bless the troops, but they are expendable pawns whose deaths will be celebrated in D.C. The question is whether this evil even will get covered by the propaganda organs.

The main problem is if the United States is delivered a humiliating military defeat, which is possible, like all evil empires before it the oligarchs will punish the American people as wreckers.

76 That particular sea shanty is sort of what kicked the whole thing off. Some kid/musician in Scotland was going insane during the lockdown so he started singing shanties. No. Impeachment is the House side of it. Basically, it's the House saying he can be tried for high crimes and misdemeanors by the Senate. So Trump is the only president in US History to be 2x impeached.

I have a farcebook profile, but literally never go to it unless somebody dies. I thought it was good for reconnecting with military buddies, but even those guys, I don't bother.

Every now and then though, I get a flurry of notices in my email about what everyone I know is saying on the site, and how everyone is reacting to what everyone else is saying. It creates an illusion of things happening, but then when I ask in meat space about updates for people, they're like "Yeah, nothing really happening here."

So farcebook is not only monitoring my lack of activity, it's pretty much lying to me about what everyone else is up to.

Pretty much everyone who sells on Ebay is also selling on Amazon. I don't know how it works, but yeah, I would assume that's the case, that Amazon is the "fulfillment center" for a lot of these merchants, and so where you initiated the transaction is not going to change much how the process goes.

2. Flat rejection and, if needed, open rebellion to attempt to restore the old order, implemented quickly and relatively bloodlessly. This won't work ("status quo ante" never does), but the outcome will be wildly *different* from option 1, for better or worse.
3. A slow, grinding conflict ultimately resulting in option #1.

It's the ability of corporations to pay research firms to deliver whatever answer it wants to any question it wants. That usually involves more serious subjects, such as minimizing the links between cancer and pesticides or asbestos. Y hired one of the firms she considers dubious: Exponent.

"Science for hire is such an important issue, it impacts all of us in very meaningful ways," Marron said. "X was getting exponentially more media attention, however, than any other case I'd ever seen. This was a way to share how it operates.

"These firms perform scientific gymnastics and contortions in a dishonest way but it makes people who don't understand to think, well, 'it could have been that way.'"

Not just corporations. Governments do this all the time. "Science for hire" is fine - it's all about who they work for. The problem is that no one works for the customer or the taxpayer, respectively.

A good analogy is bond rating agencies. Who do they work for? The answer has been different over time. Before the banking reforms in the late 70s, they worked for the customer. Not everything got rated, but if a bond *was* rated, the rating was usally paid for by a major institutional investor who wanted to buy a lot of the issue. The ratings companies had a vested interest in accuracy.

After the regulatory change that dictated that pension funds and fixed-income managed portfolios *must* have some amount of highly-rated "investment grade" paper or they couldn't buy, it pivoted. The issuers started paying for ratings or else they couldn't sell. Now who do the raters work for? Now what happens to accuracy?

Rep. Justin Humphrey has introduced a bill that would create an official Bigfoot hunting season. Humphrey's district in southeast Oklahoma includes the heavily wooded Ouachita Mountains, where they already have a Bigfoot festival there every year and the hope is that these hunting licenses would help increase tourism.

There are two sides to Dinosaur N.M. One side has the dinosaur bones and whatnot, the other is "just" fascinating landscrape. In fact, as you go into that side, the road on which you are driving is part of the National Monument, but you're basically surrounded by private land for about 20 miles or so. You may think it can never happen here, but it is already starting. Censorship, inequality before the law, critical race theory mandated in schools and government, biology is a construct. People fervently believe these are necessary to make sure there is no wrong think.

277 While it lays out our current situation nicely, Greenfield's articles misses one major key point.

The battle was lost the moment the election was stolen. It's over, kaput, finito.

There is no remedy to corporations canceling people, or the FAANG giants destroying any and all conservative voices. There's no one stopping the multitude of voices calling for Nazi-like reeducation camps and the forced compliance of all who dared have an opposite viewpoint of the evil democrats.

There is no remedy. Not in the courts, not in congress, not in the department of justice or any law enforcement agency. At this point, I doubt any state would have the balls (other than Texas) to tell these people to GDIAFF.

It's always been thus, just to a much more limited degree than now, when eroded educational standards and overall an eroding culture have produced a dumbed down populace. It's possible too much stupid fiction has increased the problem in this era.

"Qanon" idiocy is obviously idiocy to anyone who actually knows or understands any of the topics in question, but to those who consume silly fiction all the time, I guess it might seem otherwise.

306 Being unable to affect the trajectory of an epidemic is common sense, science, and a century of observational experience. It's conventional wisdom in actual epidemiology, and was last March. A few places kept their heads, remembered this, and their scores will be pretty much the same as those who engaged in the radical experiment of "mitigation" - minus the substantial social, economic, and human costs, of course.

Sweden and Peru's final scores will be similar - there's always a difference, apparently mostly related to how severe the previous few influenza seasons were (i.e. how many medically vulnerable people are available to become fatalities).

And no, "flatness" cannot and is not needed to explain the degree of credulous submissive scientific illiteracy, corruption incompetence and power-madness of institutions, and general dumbing-down that has been on display since last March, and has now culminated in a US not just in decline but hell-bent on decline.

No, I'm saying if you are female, and you have serial sex partners, without regard for your mortal soul, you're basically "overdoing" the act of trying to cover up your own shame and guilt.

Harris then takes the office with clean hands. The populace is grateful to have her. The subversion with her name on It will be less unpopular.

346 "OTOH, The free market works even though it is always applied with
imperfect means, some corruption, unexpected events, and incompetent
implementation" ----

Communism is a government system, totalitarian in nature. The opposite is government run by the people, via a vote for representatives, and a balance of powers. Liberty (not "capitalism") is the opposite of communism. Free markets happen when the government remains of/by/for the people. That means regulations that stop coercive/dishonest actions in the marketplace ... keep it "free market" (by force of Gov').
---- The monopolies (and fiat currency) and government intervention for markets are how "capitalism" (so called "free markets") can also go wrong, with too little government intervention. BigTech and BigBank have certainly taught us that, as they buy up our government with their wealth. (hence we are an oligarchy, little people have no voice).

John Quincy Adams is the only President who subsequently became a member of the House and used it to rail against the gag rule and slavery.

Andrew Johnson became a senator again for TN after being VP and President. He was met with applause when he returned to the Senate btw.

I agree. I decided early on "Q" was a Larp, and supposedly some of "the bakers" were found to be deciding on how to profit from it, once it grew. But while to me it was silly and cryptic, the real force of the movement was people studying up on things like Gates/Fauci and the globalist cabals. --- They became a community, and many stayed in the community while doubting Q was any more than just another on their side. ... The good part of it was uniting people around a cause ... they were more active than most "normies". (and I don't think "Q" ever called for violence, he called for research ... maybe some trusted him too much and really believed, even they actively revealed some dirty parts of the DC cartels)

Women, overwhelmingly, want a secure long term relationship, but dwell more on the emotional stability than many men. They are often disappointed when the courtship period tapers off and they are confronted with the more quotidian aspects of relationships and the lack of "romance". I used to see this all the time in depressed younger women who could not adjust to the idea that they would not be wooed in the same way they were before marriage or before they moved in with they guy.
Now, not all women fit this description, some are predatory as any guy looking to better their circumstances, but unlike guys they are not looking to run up the numbers.

The romance addiction(which is a modern problem) is the root of the issue. Two fairly average humans who don't know much about each other or have so-called chemistry can be a perfectly happy couple together. But not if one or the other has unrealistic expectations that they've built up.

But, stop dissing romance novels. It is fiction. Everyone knows it is fiction. It is nice however to daydream or get lost in a tale of true love. We read to escape the reality of work, childcare, laundry. Women are different than men. We have different emotional needs. If some of those needs get met by reading romance novels.....actually, my husband loved when I was reading " one of those" books. It usually resulted in him making me very happy.

I agree, but our society favors a more idealized notion of romance. And when you see the guy who "wakes up, scratches and looks for coffee" the bloom is off the rose for many younger women, and the girls with messy hair and no make up can dissatisfy some men who expected the "date" appearance all the time.
IMO, some of the more recent middle aged films are presenting an idealized relationship that doesn't "mature". I have a long term friend who started down this path and became disenchanted enough to take up with some quite frankly weird guy who for now makes her feel like a novelty. Her husband, they are not yet divorced, is a furnishing and remodeler who has a sales focus. She got very upset that husband does not treat her like a customer and turn on the charm on a daily basis. She said "I want him to treat me like that". So she's busy destroying a long term marriage for something that can't be sustained.

What, exactly IS the "cause", BTW? From what I've seen lately, it has kind of a religious cult quality to it, although I couldn't describe it, because I ignore that stuff.

I suspect Q (whoever or whatever it might really be) must be SOME sort of insider. The first I heard of the Italian involvement in the election steal seems to have come from a Q-connected source. I was skeptical of that connection, but then I saw a clip where Gen McInerny confirmed the existence of sworn testimony to that effect. I also found out that there's a very anti-Trump faction of the Italian government who is said to have conspired with Obama to undo Trump.
Then there's the "Storm is Coming" thing. On the one hand, it never came. OTOH, all the pieces appear to be in place right now for exactly that.

I saw a discussion recently in which prophetic aspects of the Q stuff were apparently connected to prosperity gospel preachers-basically we're good people so we deserve things to turn out our way-which is 1) pretty anti-Biblical and 2) not the way anything works (Biden's attack on the economy is unlikely to spare anyone but the connected at first, and not even them eventually).

Posted by: Methos at January 23, 2021 03:24 PM (kOpft)

415 It could also be very, very bad depending what hour we're really in. I
don't think we've seen the Man of Lawlessness yet, and, as I recall,
he's supposed to come to power (falsely) promising peace to end a period
of chaos. If we're now entering that chaos, folks being programmed to
flock to the first savior of civilization to appear are being badly
mislead.
If we're merely in another birth pang,
then the "God wins" thing will come as the success of evil tends to
make people more aware of it and more apt to turn from it. But we still
have to go through the 'evil succeeds and times are hard' phase of the

Silly me. And I always thought the FIRST rule of governance was keeping the people safe.
Not screwing them over.

Mentions how pre election Democrat Propaganda Ministry claimed through sources Russia was going to meddle in the election, yet after the election everything was on the up and up, no interference was made.

420 I saw a discussion recently in which prophetic aspects of the Q stuff were apparently connected to prosperity gospel preachers-basically we're good people so we deserve things to turn out our way-which is 1) pretty anti-Biblical and 2) not the way anything works (Biden's attack on the economy is unlikely to spare anyone but the connected at first, and not even them eventually).

I DO seem to be seeing that kind of character to it. "Good will prevail over Evil" stuff. I see that in some of the rantings of Lin Wood as well. I take no comfort in that.

So perhaps it's some mid-level intelligence insider, with some off-beat spiritual ideas, essentially starting his own sort of church. There are plenty of Patriotic Americans with all kinds of spiritualism going on that seem pretty bizarre to outsiders. We need all the help we can get vs the Communists infecting all our major institutions.

422 Before the election there were plenty of YouTube videos of preachers claiming it was God's will for Trump to win. Then it was it's not over, just wait, Trump will win. At least some of those videos seem to have disappeared.
