Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sohrab Amari: The Corporate-GOP Divorce Will Be Painful in the Short-Term, but Rewarding in the Long TermI just want to get to where we can start the reckoning. November's election revealed that the class realignment of our two parties is solidifying. Democrats have increasingly emerged as the party of upscale suburbs, of Silicon Valley and Hollywood and Wall Street, of the owners of capital and the professionals who service them. The GOP, meanwhile, is trending toward a multiracial working-class party, preferred by those who generally make their living by toil. So why are conservatives fretting about corporate America cutting off the GOP, a process merely accelerated by last week's (disgraceful) mob assault on the Capitol? Did they think building a working-class party was going to be painless? That they could mouth pro-worker rhetoric while continuing to ignore workers' concerns on issues like immigration and wages? A country-club party with blue-collar decor? That jig was going to be up at some point. The sooner, the better -- for an underrepresented American working class and for Republicans who take the realignment seriously.Megacorporations using their money to strip the rights from citizens are begging citizens to strip them of their money. Progressive corporate tax rates, for example, would be a major equalizer. cOrPorAtIonZ arE OuR FreNz, part 1: the Mattel corporation are your frenz. "Come out barbie, let's go party." Social media is swooning over images of Barbie buddying up to a doll of an iconic fashion designer and LGBTQ ally Aimee Song. The pics first surfaced in 2017 as part of a campaign to raise LGBTQ awareness, but went viral recently with Twitter rooting for the same-sex pairing. Barbie creator Mattel had originally devised the collaboration as a way to promote Song’s ubiquitous "Love Wins" shirts, which raise funds to help LGBTQ youth in crisis. As such, the photos show Barbie and a plastic facsimile of Song sitting together on a bed, and other relationship-like activities, while sporting her signature couture.cOrPorAtIonZ arE OuR FreNz, part 2: The Cadbury Cream Egg company is your frenz. The company, which makes a candy most associated with the most important Christian holiday, and which is mainly marketed to children (as all store-bought candies are), will launch an ad campaign featuring (content warning) gay men french kissing with a Cadbury egg between their tongues. Order them in time for Easter, yo! Let Christ know that H8 has no home here!!! cOrPorAtIonZ arE OuR FreNz, part 3: Disney and Lucasfilm are your frenz. Disney and Lucasfilm are super-proud to have insinuated even more trans propaganda into your children's Star Wars books. He has a non-binary black character whose pronouns are "they/them," to indoctrinate your children: "I wanted them to be able to say their own pronouns and not have other people gender them and decide their gender from the outside. I wanted them to be clearly a human and not an alien ’cause in this particular case that was important," he said. He concluded, "And I wanted to show canonically Han and Lando respecting the they/them pronouns without missing a beat because they’re heroes. And real heroes respect people's pronouns."

Once again: the corps have calculated that the future is woke. They are taking the financial hit short-term, for greater earnings in the future. If their prediction is correct, they have protected shareholder value, not burned it. It all depends on the reliability of their cultural forecast. We all hope they are wrong, but that hope does not imply that the corps are foolishly or maliciously burning their shareholders. Break them up.
A good article, ace. https://www.tabletmag.com/ sections/news/articles/everything-is-broken One of the good lines: Flatness is the reason the three jobs with the most projected growth in your country all earn less than $27,000 a year, and it is also the reason that all the secondary institutions that once gave structure and meaning to hundreds of millions of American lives-jobs and unions but also local newspapers, churches, Rotary Clubs, main streets-have been decimated. And flatness is the mechanism by which, over the past decade and with increasing velocity over the last three years, a single ideologically driven cohort captured the entire interlocking infrastructure of American cultural and intellectual life. I like Cernovich's idea, too, but it would band the government from purchasing electronics. At all.
Now, I am not opposed to that, especially if it has the consequence of incentivizing manufacturing back here at home where it belongs. But until that happens, there is no such thing as electronics manufactured at scale that doesn't derive from oppressive foreign labor policies. Even if you assemble the stuff here, many components are going to come from Chinese and Vietnamese factories. Your LCD panel might come from Korea or Japan, but its ribbon cable probably comes from China. It's power rectifier probably comes from China. You can build a computer whose motherboard and CPU come from the United States, but the expansion sockets, timing crystals and HDMI ports probably come from China or maybe Taiwan (and Taiwan would be okay, as compared to China). The point is that the entire electronics supply chain is infested with parts - including *many* small and high-volume parts like sockets, cables, many integrated circuits, etc. - from the PRC and other abusive forced-labor countries. It is actually impossible right now to get electronics that *don't* use slave labor at all. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 14, 2021 03:28 PM (UZVEt) 44

Corporations are basically the new aristocracy--the titles are immortal while the particular wielders of them come and go and they just selected a weak puppet to rule and reduce the middle class to serfs as they have in a number of other countries.
Doubtful though whether they can actually pull it off in the long run. The Oligarchs behind Yeltsin selected a Putin. Putin now has the last laugh. The Chinese oligarchs that they had China under their thumb, turns up Xi is their new emperor and consolidating control. Governments, at the end of the day, always have to have at least some reservoir of consent and it is clear that the consent with the ruling class is at its end. Our elites are just the sort of vacant debased ruling class that causes commoners to seek someone to crush them. Plenty of examples in history where the many sufferers beg for a despot to rid themselves of multiple mini despots. Posted by: whig at January 14, 2021 03:29 PM (pO7gM) 56
The hard part will be fundraising. If you forgo the corporate money you will have to rely on middle and working class individuals who will be more fickle about donating. You also have to be worried about the financial oligarchs shutting down any fundraising networks you setup to facilitate this.

Problem with suggesting taxing the corporations is this:
Corporations don't pay taxes. They collect taxes on behalf of the govt. So taxing them more simply means they add that tax to the price of their goods/services and then pass that along to the govt. Arguably since the higher taxes makes their prices higher and thus demand for the goods/services goes down at the higher price point it still can hurt them, but most prices have a decent bit of elasticity in them, so.... Taxing corporations more, even ones you don't like, isn't a good option. Posted by: pkudude99 at January 14, 2021 03:31 PM (Ww/bc) 66

Not buying, even a tiny bit, the assertion that "upscale suburbs" are now the "base" for a party as degraded and pathetic as the Dems. Let's see the data from November to show that.
Oh, right, instead of being deluged with often facile and dumb analyses and break-downs and white-boards about "the electorate" and why it did what it did, we're hearing bupkis. Possibly because, possibly, one or two of the least hack-ish of the "experts" would feel the need to explain the large number of stunning anomalies in the official results. My favorites would be explaining how the bellwether counties for 60 years running got it entirely wrong - 100% wrong, except for a favorite-son DE county. And how OH was taken off the playing board, decisively, yet PA and MI reverted to nominal results since 1988 - something that's never happened, because it wouldn't happen.

I've been saying that for yonks now. Raising corporate taxes is just a way of Big Government to raise taxes on YOU, but deflect any blame from itself to the corporations.
It is, if you keep buying. But that's voluntary, which taxes aren't. You could make the case that its indirect taxation more effectively on necessities, because the end consumer has to consume a certain amount of the product. But I don't see how any of that applies to Disney, candy companies, or toymakers. It's not like different industries cannot be taxed differently. And even with necessities, in a rich country like this one, we consume far more, and far more high end than necessary, so that the end consumer could still avoid some of the result of increased taxation. And if so, won't additional taxes eventually erode its profit margin to zero? Also, doesn't this assume that raising prices will reduce demand for the corporation's product? If so, since ALL corporations are facing additional corporate taxes, won't there be a "rising tide lifts all boats" aspect? There is going to be a lot of GOP dogma on taxes, spending, etc. that is going to have to be tossed aside if the GOP wants to survive.
The sad thing is that most of the dogma is just vapid talking points that think tanks on the take have been flooding the zone with for decades. These talking points seldom survive even a little scrutiny. The idea that all corporate taxation is indirect taxation takes no account of difference in product, market etc. We can jargon the discussion up with talk of price elasticity of demand etc. if necessary. But it's just real obvious without the technical mumbo jumbo. Kinda like the dopey "tariffs is terrible" bromide. Again, it's almost impossible to set up a wealth tax, since most rich people don't personally have a lot of assets. Their assets are in trusts, LLCs, C-Corps, etc. They structure it that way to avoid liabilities and taxes.

Not an economist, but doesn't this analysis assume that the corporation can absorb the additional taxes in its profit margin? And if so, won't additional taxes eventually erode its profit margin to zero?
Eventually? Yes, if the tax increase is large enough. But if it's a small increase then they may chose to eat it rather than lose more sales by raising prices. Also, doesn't this assume that raising prices will reduce demand for the corporation's product? If so, since ALL corporations are facing additional corporate taxes, won't there be a "rising tide lifts all boats" aspect? ONE corporation raising prices will suffer from elastic demand, but ALL corporations doing so seems to me would not. If all corporations raised their prices, then there would be a strong incentive to cheat, eat some of the taxes in order to lower your price, and hopefully make up the loss with an increase in customers. The end result is that everyone does it, and drives prices back down. Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile at January 14, 2021 03:53 PM (jOcSX) 233

MJ above has studied economics.
Most general 'principles' in economics generally have caveats and limits so they are more like rules of thumb. This is especially true in macro economics. Just like MJ correctly brought in elastic and inelastic demand, it is also true that corporate structures of trans national corporations can affect their tax rate. One of the reasons that PDT lowered the corporate tax rate was to bring back corporations supposedly located in foreign countries. It worked kind of but then the corporations took that gift but did not want the flip side of PDT's bargain which was to put America and Americans first on trade and immigration. The truth is, like any time in history, people with capital want cheap labor--thus, if the local market is constricted, they want labor mobility. One of the reasons that the economy struggled during the 70's aside from oil is the labor pool boomed, when it shrank in the 80's, the mass illegal immigration started. Economics is kind of like the old Fixx song--one thing leads to another or people respond to incentives, both financial and other and avoid disincentives if possible. 55 Corporations are basically the new aristocracy--the titles are immortal while the particular wielders of them come and go and they just selected a weak puppet to rule and reduce the middle class to serfs as they have in a number of other countries.
Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile at January 14, 2021 03:53 PM (jOcSX) Sorry, I don't find this convincing. Eating some of the taxes erodes profit margin. OK, that could be made up in volume, until and unless profit margin goes to zero, which in the limit, it would. But OTOH, how often do corporations in a given industry all raise their prices in unison? When regulators make anti-trust noises, they claim that they were all responding to economic forces, but realistically, it's hard not to think that they saw their competitors raise prices, so they took advantage of the cover. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at January 14, 2021 03:52 PM (H5knJ) That taxes are passed on isn't the real issue with corporate taxes. Taxes being "passed on to consumers" is just as true if you tax labor or you tax at the capital ownership level. 1. Corporate taxes are hard to get revenue with because companies can and do devote a lot of resources to minimizing their tax burden 2. Corporate taxes are relatively distortionary in comparison to taxing capital ownership because they tend to be a lot less even in application and encourage inefficient economic decisions for the sake of minimizing taxes Progressivity in corporate income taxes is an interesting idea from the perspective of trying to create a bias towards smaller enterprises, which would tend to have desirable social benefits. Colorado Alex, that ignores the substitution effect. Literally, most of economic theory does ok at one level of analysis--the firm and then begins to fall apart at the aggregate level due to almost infinite higher order effects. At the global level, most economic theory becomes mush because the models are not that predictive of outcomes--explanatory is nice, demonstrating future predictions is much better.
IMHO, the economic psychology and historical approaches are sounder at the macro level even though it is a naive assumption. People generally seek to fill their wants and avoid pain and often the past predicts the future. Posted by: whig at January 14, 2021 04:06 PM (pO7gM) 338

The divide between the Red and the Blue has parallels with the economic divide between the South and the North prior to the Civil War. The South produced the raw materials, but had very few factories that made the finished goods. The North had the factories, so they took the raw materials and turned them into products for sale.
At the beginning of the Civil War, the South's only chance for economic survival was to appeal to Europe to take their goods instead, and boycott the North. Once that failed, it was only a matter of time before the South would lose the war - they were a fraction of the economic size of the North. Republicans as currently constituted have the labor, but none of the technology, to properly fight Democrats. Until we develop a parallel ecosystem, we're going to be at an enormous disadvantage. This time, the slave-utilizers reside with the Democrats - just like before - rather than the antebellum South. Posted by: Darrell Harris at January 14, 2021 04:09 PM (6xA3t) 352

One of those is the foundation gag where the billionaire and family are placed at the head of this gigantic foundation so as to avoid estate taxes. Old John D. But you dishonor the poor! Isn't it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? Aren't they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?

The four-year Pennsylvania Statute of Limitations on debt is an often overlooked but powerful defense for consumers facing aggressive creditors. Debt collectors do not want you to know this, but sometimes a debt is just too old to collect. All states have "Statutes of Limitation" that prevent a creditor from enforcing a debt if the creditor does not file suit within a certain period of time. In other words, if a creditor waits too long to sue you, it is simply out of luck.

The break in of the Capitol was 30 minutes before Trump was done speaking. And the distance to the Capitol would add more time.
Google Maps says the walking distance from ellipse to Capital is over a mile.. a good 20-30 minute walk Nobody listened to Trumps speech and THEN went to the Capitol to ransack it. Corporate size is a problem all by itself ... the Big Tech Monops throttling dissent is one problem, but we saw another one in the financial crash with banks. "Too big to fail." I don't necessarily think those banks were too big to fail per se, but they certainly had enough political clout to get help in not failing, and most managed to avoid more than even a year of missed executive bonuses. A steeply progressive bank asset (holdings) tax to punish scale was always a bit of dream of mine after that.

Not at all. The substitution effect is wrapped up in the price elasticity of demand for the good. If consumers can find a close substitute then the elasticity will be high as consumers change their purchasing habits in order to maintain maximum utility. If not, then elasticity will be low.

Yeah and he beat up the Tea Party which was a batch of klansmen in the Marvel Comics stupidverse. They used to be kind of light in their touch on that stuff, though. I'm just waiting for the day that these corps push and get extraterritorial rights like they are separate countries unto themselves. The dystopian Shadowrun universe (with out the magic) is very much on its way. In Shadowrun megacorps have been granted rights as entities on par with other nations, to the point where any megacorp ground is the equivalent of another nation, thus increasing their own power. They then exist in various countries but have their own set of 'laws' and rules and even start to build their own armies. Regular nations have much less control. The people...Well anyone that wants any modicum of freedom lives in the Shadows of society and does "side jobs" for one corp or country against another.
