Meet The PetMorons

This is my daugther's GSP puppy, Mel. The best mannered puppy I've ever met! Which is really just a reflection of her owner.

Yawrate

Or the shock collar. Hey just kidding. Lovely puppy. We hope that Mel has a long and prosperous doggeh life. Thanks for sharing today.

Long time lurker, love the site and the pet thread. Both the daily content and these pictures help me go through some days. Luna is the white shepherd and the alpha of the two, even though the other girl Athena has 20 pounds on her. They have been great dogs, smart, loyal and protective. They give back so much more than I ever give them Thanks for this very welcome Saturday respite from politics. (They both eventually end up on the sofa. It is specifically theirs. They’re not spoiled or anything.) No name provided

No need to thank me. It's folks like you with their pet photos and stories that make this place. Lovely dogs. Jeez what a surprise they love the couch. Thanks for your contribution today.

Hello Mis. Hum
This is my 4 year old pug Lanie. Tragedy struck the week of Christmas she was taken ill and passed unexpectedly while in the vets care. My wife and I are broken hearted and shed many tears and still do. I saw the nice memorial cat wall in this weeks pet thread and thought I send some pics for your consideration. My wife is retired and Lanie was her companion while I work at night. She was such a sweet little dog and loved everyone she met. She was the heart and life of our house.

Thank you,

Floomaster

Long time lurker

Just so sorry to hear that your sweetie was taken away so young. I think we all know the emptiness you are feeling now. Thanks for sharing and may you find another big sweetie.

The In-box was pretty sparse this week. But for those who submitted pet photos and stories, Thank You!

If you have something to share you can reach us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Until next week, watch out where the Huskies go and don't you eat that yellow snow. Have a great week.

6 Loosing a furry friend is hard for a long time afterward. Sill am shocked in morning opening the basement door and not finding a cat ready to pounce out. I still leave light on after 19 years of doing it.

7 My nomination for the Pet Thread Book Review is "The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs" by Patricia B. McConnell. Short review is that doggehs are not primates.
I am enjoying the book greatly, and this McConnell seems to know what she is doing and includes a lot of dog training stories as well as some practical advice.
None of the advice seems to work with Conor; however, probably because he has been poorly trained for years now!

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at January 16, 2021 03:08 PM (87oRe)

8 MegaRoy will be 9 this year. He is a big Maine Coon, and we have noticed him slowig down and sleeping more.

Does anyone else mix psyllium into their per's food to help them with hard stool and constipation. Vet told us to start that for Meg. Meg of course doesn't like it.

Waaay back in the 80's we had a Siamese that got put on Iams for a sensitive stomach. Took him a full week to get hungry enough to eat that. The meal before he gave in, he sat back, looked me in the eye and gave me a very traditional Siamese cussing.

17 Look for the book When Pigs Fly. It's about training independent dogs.

I can always tell when Loretta has an accident in the house, like she did this week. She acts ashamed. It happened at night and she was a bit disoriented next morning so may have been a small seizure. She did not have a single accident as a puppy.

19 Magnificent pet morons, as always.

I'm not doing well with Rusty's death. I think the lockdown is amplifying the loss for me. Most of the rescue dogs I've found nearby have basically been old and sickly (I can't deal with another loss so soon), too big for me to handle, or pitbulls or chihuahuas who can't be around kids. I did apply for several puppehs, but one was snapped up quickly, one rescue decided that my 79yo husband was too old for a young dog, and I was disqualified for two because of distance.

It's been a crappy dogless week

22 For all kitty owners, get their kidneys checked out and even ultrasounded. Cat kidneys (Kitneys?) aren't supposed to last as long as the rest of their bodies have adapted to live, especially for indoor cats. My last cat, Dorkie Dork, a Maine Coon-mix runt, had malformed kidneys which only appeared on ultrasound (when she was having her right, rear leg amputated due to trauma). She made it to about 13 until her kidneys shut down. She had other problems, but the kitneys were the big one.

37 A couple of weekends ago, my ex brought over her rescue kitty (my godkitty) Maceo for the first time. At first he wouldn't leave his cat carrier. Gradually he got to wandering around my ginormous, labyrinthine, 1100 sf condo. He checked everything out (ex calls it his going "on patrol") and he's got a 4" stub of a tail so when he's sticking his head into crevasses and such, his tail, which has a red stripe, is so adorable sticking out. After awhile he found a nice spot on a couch and fell asleep. He had to be coaxed into going home.

The older female is too old to bother now, I think, but since she was a feral rescue I expect she was quite a good hunter when younger.

My boyhood cat, Rusty, was a good mouser and used to leave his kills on Mom's dinner table chair. It didn't bother her; she had grown up on a farm. My other cats have all been eager to hunt mice, but haven't gotten the opportunity. Their prey is roaches -- the big ones only. The tiny ones are beneath their notice. Fortunately for me, since I flea-bombed twice in late '19 and early '20, the insects have not come back.

55 Bif, my almost 17-year-old cat Angus was prescribed Miralax mixed into his wet food, and I believe that is tasteless. He gets 1/2 tsp. twice daily but sometimes that much causes diarrhea so I watch it. It softens wonderfully.

really missing him terribly - thought I would try to replace (not replace is what I mean) with a cat instead as he was irreplaceable?

but just no luck with rescuing a cat at all it seems! I met two lovely young cats last week but was rejected for both! ouch

it sort of forces you to a) LIE ON THE APPLICATION (I know I should just do this) or b) purchase a kitten from a breeder.

right now I'm thinking God is saying, no cat for you, so I'll just let it lie.

anyway sorry it's going rough. it's HARD to rescue! really hard. thankfully - hmm - we do have quite a few breeders around us. you can reach out and ask about adult dogs that need rehoming from breeders, that's a great option too.

When I had an elderly cat with hard stools, I started giving him treats of whole milk, in a tiny one ounce or less bowl i have for ingredients when cooking. He liked milk, and they say it can give them the runs if they eat too much. It worked for him, he used to love drinking the last bit of milk from my glass when i still drank it myself.

Cats have to taught to be mousers. If they've been indoor cats there whole life, they probably won't be interested. My parents trapped a mouse in the dining room once and put there big, Maine Coon Cat in there with it. The cat looked at the mouse, looked at my parents, and gave them a look of "what the hell do you want me to do with that thing". My sisters cats got bored and walked away from a mouse. Her boy cat tried to be friends with it though. Mouse not interested.

I went to breeders for much of my last adoptions, and I did find a rescue that wasn't insane and actually wanted to adopt out. (assuming it didn't get burned out in the last SoCal wildfires). I adopted one and the lady called me up a year or so later for help with a cat she knew would die in the shelter (it is open air). He lived for about a year before his body gave out, but he was a sweet fellow.

The ColorPoint gene - that gives the color variation Siamese and Himmies have - also forces blue eyes. Any cat that has two Colorpoint genes will have blue eyes, and no deafness risk.

Some breed standards forbid colorpoint, or can, but the genes are all the cats need, and with more CP breeds about, these genes are getting out in the general population more.

I really don't understand disqualifying someone for wanting to give an animal in a shelter a home.

I only got one mutt from the shelter about 30 yrs ago and they seemed happy to place to animals as long as you paid to have them neutered.

77 I took our ginormous (116 lb.) white German Shepherd to the vet yesterday for his annual checkup, dental cleaning, etc. This involves me wrestling with him for about 10 minutes while two vet techs try desperately to find a vein in his leg so they can dump enough propophyl to drop a rhino into him. We were on leg number 3 before they were able to successfully hit a vein. Then we have to hoist him up and carry him to a table in the back of the clinic. Good times. At least this time he didn't come within about two inches of biting the face off of one of the techs.

82 For all kitty owners, get their kidneys checked out and even ultrasounded.

A cat fountain to encourage drinking is the best preventative. Cats are desert-derived, so concentrate their urine massively to save water. Therefore it is the first to fail, often enough. More water = less strain. Adding water to food can help too, but most cats will be encouraged to drink from a moving water fountain.

I have avoided having serious kidney failures even on my 20 and 17 year old cats because there are fountains around.

With my only SPCA Special kitten, Arizona the red tabby Coon mix, they were more than pleased to see him go to a good home. All my cats since have either been adopted by me as strays, one from a cat show, and both the Siberians from the same breeder in my state. Once upon a time the SPCA refused to adopt out black cats during October, for fear of weirdoes, but they don't do that any more. So I dunno.

Miss Linda brought me a fountain for my two. They ignore it and prefer water in their bowls. Though the big black likes running water -- he hops up on the bathroom counter and gives me that look -- he won't use the fountain.

As for aging, I think she'll live to 100 because she spends as little time moving as possible and conserving her energy. I'll try to send MisHum a picture that captures her eyes.

92 Its a hard time to adopt pets right now. Many shelters want an online form and they'll decide if they have something that might fit you. No going in and seeing if there is a cat or dog that has a personality that fits you.

If the lockdowns are ever lifted I think things will go back to the how they were a year ago but who knows.

right I have to say "mixed" or something

yes she would be fine, she is sweet and friendly. she is nice to my son's odd pets, always gentle. she rarely barks, very quiet. she's seen cats in other homes and not really paid a bit of attention to them. she's a champion ignorer (chow thing) - ignores the deer in the yard too lol. anyway.

rescue people can be very tetchy around me. I am looking at going over to lancaster county I think the rescues there will be more normal.

I live in probably the absolute worst part of the USA. there might be parts of NJ worse but ... nah I really think I'm in the snootiest, least friendly part of this country.

96 if you can afford it, consider buying a well-bred dog or cat from a good breeder who health tests the parents
the downside is the wait as usually you deposit even before the dam gets pregnant
best place to ask is local dog breed groups
stay away from fad-driven designer dog shops though

What a great bunch of pets, I love how the doggies know exactly where the camera is.
Blue eyed cats, pretty rare in my experience. Mostly you get green or yellow.
Agree with SFGoth, cats die from kidney problems often. Cats love running water. We have a cat drinking fountain in which a little trickle goes over in a bowl. My 2 cats love it and they drink from it more often than a bowl of standing water.
The only drawback is whenever I sit next to it, the sound of it makes me want to pee. LOL.

Most of the local animal shelters/pounds in my area work through fosters and orgs like petfinder. I even contacted Philly's main site (they have about half in fosters) and they have about 30 pitbulls and one mastiff. Could they call me if a gentle little dog shows up? Nope.
