It was a high precision night bombing raid using the Germans X-beam technology. The had broken the codes, but didn't have a countermeasure for the X-beam yet.

I think it dates to WW1, when only very low flying flights had a hope of bombing anything accurately. By WW2 they were a pretty useless anachronism, put up because some people liked to see them, but of little use. Sometimes they would put an observer in a basket, but that was a suicide mission if there ever was one.

The purpose of barrage balloons was the steel cable that tethered it to a ground-based or ship-based point. The balloons were supposed to hinder low-flying enemy aircraft. Get too close to a balloon, lose a piece of wing or tail. That actually happened a few times, and made them a cheaply effective anti-aircraft defense.

They were deployed in clusters, over high-value targets/areas, to deter low-flying strafers and horizontal bombers, and dive bombers.
Used mostly in the UK, but there are pictures showing them used over the Normandy beaches, after the fighting moved a bit inland, to protect LST's and other vessels unloading men and materials directly onto beaches.

Yep, force the bombers above the balloons to make them less accurate and give anti-aircraft guns an opportunity to work. Wasn't a perfect solution but it didn't hurt.

Sure, they had to cross the English Channel to invade Britain, rather than 1000 km of steppes, but I think the Germans would have been a lot more successful with an invasion of the UK. The Royal Navy? Hitler would have stationed all his subs on the bottom of the Channel and would have most likely sunk the entire Royal Navy when they appeared.

NH has seen an influx from city dwellers looking to get out. Good times if you own real estate and want to sell. Bad because our property taxes are abased on 100% home valuation. And our local politicians are all lefties and haven't met a $1 bill they wouldn't spend.
Seacoast NH, where I am, is all blue. There are sizable pockets of us holdouts, but it is painfully clear we are behind enemy lines.
Geographically, I love this state. I'm originally from upstate NY (north of Albany) but never looked back. I like being 1hr from mountains, 30 minutes to any beach I want to go to. Alas, I fear it is lost.

surprisingly, Miami is more temperate than the northern towns in Florida. At least, it seemed so to me when I lived there. Constant slight breeze helped. Don;t know much about St. Augustine, but Jacksonville weather is miserable and that's not all too far away. Miami's problem is traffic. Big traffic issues.

Roadblock of a sort. They were to discourage low altitude flight (under 5000 ft or so). The most accurate bombing at the time was dive bombing. Release altitude around 2000 ft or less.
Also, flying lower puts an attacking aircraft below the engagement height of the heavy anti-aircraft weapons of the time (the ones that fill the air with shell fragments. Lighter one needed a bullet to hit the target). The heavy weapons could not track fast moving, low altitude targets.
So, these balloons would counter dive bombers and force level bomber to attack at higher altitudes, decreasing their accuracy (the higher the release height, the less accurate) and making them more vulnerable to anti aircraft fires.
The balloons hoisted up a steel cable that was anchored to the ground. It would not only foul the aircraft, but could cut through a wing.
These balloons are blimp shaped so they can operate in higher winds that a round balloon.

The primary barrier was that the Royal Navy made it impossible to cross the channel plus the limits on German shipping made it impossible as well.
Churchill and the Brits rejected demands from the French to basically throw their British Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes away when France had clearly lost. Many of the French government wanted England to go down too if France did.
Thus, the Germans had to eliminate the RAF using the German Air Force so that the Royal Navy could be dealt with on the invasion. The limited amount of shipping available to the Germans meant using clearly unsuited river barges to cross a very nasty English Channel risking loss of a lot of boats and supply by simple swamping in rough seas. In addition, it limited the Germans to be able to send a couple of divisions initially which would be greatly outnumbered even by reserves and the populace. Then was the problem of resupply such as petrol for tanks. Then, there is the problem that the Germans would have to take fortified ports in order for resupply. Dieppe for the Allies showed that to be foolish.

Volunteers from all over the country came to help them stand off the Federal Gov (FBI). They were instructed not to shoot unless told to. There was one cell, squad that was ready to shoot as a column of vehicles (FBI) approached the perimeter. They only stopped when people within the perimeter threatened to shoot them.
The advancing FBI were just a provocation, trying to start a fight. They turned around and left. The people that almost shot were kicked out, and went right to the Federal lines.

Gibraltar would fall in a few days from land assault and bombing. If Germany controlled the skies and the ocean around there, that would close the western end of the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean would be a German lake. Malta would fall from siege. It was a near run thing that it did not fall.
