Science Isn't Dead, But It Is Ailing - Part 5
by Your Raving Roving Science Correspondent [Jay Guevara]

truthtab.jpg

Past entries in the series:

Science isn't dead, but it is ailing - part 4
Science isn't dead, but it is ailing - part 3
Science isn't dead, but it is ailing - part 2
Science isn't dead, but it is ailing - part 1

Previous posts in this series have ripped on education in chemistry and mathematics. In fairness, it is probably time for a constructive rather than a critical post regarding education. What would I do, given a free hand in tertiary education?

Over the years, I've had occasion to reflect on this many times, and consequently have given it considerable thought. Before starting with the minutiae of particular subjects, Guevara University would spend the first few weeks of the first year with a grounding in basic intellectual skills that transcend the choice of subject matter.

What would those skills entail?

I'd start with the following tips on how to study, which for some reason no one is ever taught.

• skim the material quickly in advance of a lecture
• take telegraphic notes (short phrases)
• later recopy those notes, augmenting them
• read the material again, this time carefully, taking notes on it
• if possible, read a different source on the same topic

Assuming there is a textbook, page through it quickly on the next topic to be considered, not reading it in its entirety, but focusing on subheadings, i.e., broad themes. Look at the problems at the end of the chapter (most appropriate for STEM subjects), and read the summary at the end of the chapter. Then go back and skim the chapter quickly. At that point, any lecture on the topic will be semi-familiar, which will greatly simplify note-taking. (I'd recommend taking notes in handwriting - even now - rather than on a computer because the former engages the mind much more than the latter, and permits one to listen to the lecture while taking notes.) Notes should not be transcripts of the lecture; just jotting down two to four word phrases is ideal. That night, transcribe that foul copy to a fair copy while the lecture is still fresh in one's mind, and amplify those jotted down phrases as appropriate. Then read the chapter carefully, working proffered examples, taking notes, again as appropriate, then doing the assigned problems. Time permitting, read a different textbook on the same subject; it's amazing how the inevitable dissonance between two sources reinforces comprehension. All this was my strategy in college, and it works very well indeed.

Next would be a series of lectures on basic logic. This does not mean truth tables, or anything anywhere near that sophisticated. It refers instead to the bread and butter of logic: affirming the antecedent, denying the consequent, Venn diagrams, that sort of thing. ("If we're on AoSHQ, then we're on the internet. If we're not on the internet, then we're not on AoSHQ"). Now you might be forgiven for thinking that this was painfully obvious, and hardly in need of explicit mention, but experience shows that a disturbingly large proportion of the population whiffs on this point (usually prefaced by an exhortation to "reverse the logic!" which makes me flinch when I hear someone say that.). The logic segment would, of course, hit Ockham's Razor pretty hard, as William of Ockham's precept has fallen into general disuse.

It would go on to identification of the more frequently-encountered logical fallacies, in particular, e.g., appeals to authority, post hoc ergo propter hoc, no true Scotsman, false dichotomy, straw man, and that hearty perennial, the genetic fallacy. No need to get into an exhaustive list including the more arcane fallacies; the half dozen tired, tried, and true fallacies - all familiar to those who read the MSM - will do. (Correlation != causation, selection bias, confirmation bias, to name a few.) The point being to sensitize people to logical flaws, which will then jump off the page when they are (all too often) encountered. Articles from the MSM would be a centerpiece of the exercises.

Next up would be an introduction to mnemonics. Some scoff at memorization as down at heel. Kiss my ass. Mnemonics provide a quick and convenient way to recall a lot of information quickly, reliably, and reproducibly. What are the names of the dioic (i.e., HOOC(CH2)nCOOH) acids? Chemists say, "Oh My Such Good Apple Pie," and remember that the n = 0-5 dioic acids are oxalic, malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, and pimelic. (Yeah, I know the shirtlifters in Europe have been pushing for use of strict IUPAC nomenclature in preference to the trivial historical nomenclature, but if you walk into any chemistry laboratory on planet Earth and ask for "ethanoic acid," it'll take the denizens there a minute to realize you mean "acetic acid.")

The essence of mnemonics is association of something difficult to remember with something that is easy to remember. Roman orators used to speak apparently extemporaneously, without notes, but in fact associated the key points of their speeches with locations in their homes as they mentally walked through them. That is the origin of phrases such as "in the first place" and "in the second place."

In general, the more laughable, incongruous, and visually evocative the association, the easier it is to remember. For example, in Russian голова (golova) means "head," as I hope rhomboid will confirm). Imagine someone wearing a glove sticking up on his head for some reason. Ridiculous, but therefore memorable.

Numbers - even long ones such as 91852719521639092112 - are easily remembered through use of the major system of associating digits with consonants (vowels and unassigned consonants are ignored). (For example, "t" represents 1, "n" is 2, and "m" is 3, for the number of downstrokes in each letter.) Harry Lorayne in "The Memory Book" uses 91852719521639092112 as an example: through use of the major system, it can be easily remembered by "a beautiful naked blonde jumps up and down." Now that mnemonic is very easy to remember, at least for the Morons.

With apologies to humanities majors, I'd also include a little bit of some very basic math as a PDF.

And with apologies to STEM majors, a suggestion re writing and writer's block as a PDF.

So this is a thumbnail sketch of what I'd teach in the first couple weeks of the freshman year. Thoughts? Criticisms? Additional suggestions?

That's the point of seeking another source. With luck, you'll find a book written by someone whose brain works the same way yours does, and what had been obscure now becomes clear.

I detested thermodynamics when I first had it, because the execrable textbook basically recited "in this situation, use this equation, and that situation, use that equation."

Then I found Irving Klotz's wonderful book on the same subject, in which for each situation he showed how to derive the requisite equations from first principles (total differential of free energy), and thermodynamics rocketed up to one of my favorite topics. THAT approach made sense to me, and therefore spoke to me.

64 Since I have taught at University level (as a grad student) and hired tons of people in STEM and non-stem fields, I feel that I should have some valid input here.

First, I think this is an excellent plan, overall. For my school, Engineering 101 was a class on programming. English 101 was a class where we had to read asshats like Jane Austin and Gatsby. This is much better, but for God's sake, shouldn't people know this stuff in HS?

Second, one thing I see a lot of the past 10 years or so is everyone thinks they are a F-ing expert in logical fallacies. (what are they all taking philosophy classes now?) The upshoot is that they all think they are better than past generations who do not have that vocabulary. Knowing the terms does not mean you know how to apply them!!!!!

An example (which is a real peeve of mine) You often see that famous photo of shot up WWII plane and "survival bias" explanation that the stupid damn fools (who won the war) did not realize that the flak damage that they were seeing on the returning planes was the stuff that did not need additional protection. It was damage that did not return which took out the planes.

65 On the note taking point, I used to take the quick notes during lectures, and then write or type them up within a day or two. For me, it was because my quick note handwriting tends to be fairly illegible. So it just made sense, especially in classes that were challenging.

Nowadays students have laptops & tablets for note taking, so things should be legible, but going back and reorganizing might be almost as useful. But I agree, there's something about trying to capture the thought with a pen or pencil in your hand that cements the thought.

87 cont.

I am convinced (although I have not researched it) that this was used as an example and that the designers who reinforced planes kind of knew what systems had to be protected.

But my point is that I feel all the young-uns think that they are smarter than the past generations. They have broken the chains of religion, superstition, and absolutism and are woke. If only the allies had taught their population philosophy classes, WWII probably wouldn't have even happened.

This trend bothers me. I am old school, and I think practical experience is necessary. Short of that, then case studies where they see, but stuff written by people who think they are better than the past scientists.

I recently watched the BBC Secret War series and the problems they had to solve were impressive. I would like for every STEM student to be put on a mud flat with a German WWII harbor mine, and have them deactivate it. Let them figure out which screws make it go boom, and which ones remove the sensors. I know this will greatly reduce the number of STEM students, but I am willing to risk it.

Cool deal.

On the book, more specifically, it's Irving Klotz and Robert Rosenberg, "Chemical Thermodynamics", 3rd ed., 1974. I'd have to spend some time going back through it to see if they mentioned the total differential of the free energy approach. If nothing else, it'd be a good tie in to the structure of the Pitzer parameter approach...

I took a Constitutional law class in college.

I read chapters 7,8 & 9 a couple times and failed the test bigly....my bad, as test was on chapters 4,5 &6...

For next test read 7,8 &9 twice again... aced test... perfect score...Prof said i had largest grade swing on tests hes ever seen. Lol

Point being.... i can def see the logic behind scanning chapters before lectures and following up consolidating notes when stuff is fresh in your mind... going over things more than once/twice solidifies things in your mind.

I wish i would've partied less and reread assignments more often...would've done a heck of a lot better in school...and probably life. Sigh.

But I'm with you, I finished my BA and never want to darken the door of a college ever again. I wasn't able to 'go away' to college and get a degree in 4 years, it took me many years of part-time study to get that BA while working full time.

I enjoy life-long learning projects, how to do things, repair things, make things, and I take classes here and there to get first hand knowledge from people who want to share it. Or at least I did until this past year :-(

They couldn't produce one.

He wasn't even questioning the validity of the concept, but as a scientist he considered it basic paper writing 101 for him to reference the paper that says what he's being asked to start his paper with, namely that HIV is presumed to be the cause of AIDS.

My wife teases me because I talk to myself, but it actually serves an important role. In trying to master something, I think of how I would lecture on it, in essence lecturing to myself. What is the essence of this topic? Where to begin? How does it relate to things I already know? How to build in the things that I don't yet know? Once I do that, I've got it.

It was useful to me as a lecturer, because I already had the lecture in the can, and merely had to rewind and deliver it.

This is to say, PCR testing is being used now to justify ALL these changes to how we live, because in their infinite wisdom, they decided this instrument could prove whatever they needed it to, namely that amplifying ANYTHING will make it look like it's something, when it isn't.

In this case, a chemical which may or may not be COVID 19, and it may or may not mean an infection is present.

The estimates are credibly presumed that around 90% of PCR positive tests for Covid are false.

156 120 Tonypete,

I learned programming on a godawful Harris mini computer that used Vulcan as a JCL. Later I learned assembly language for the good old Commodore with a cassette drive and assembled a S-100 computer using Jerry Pournelle's old columns in Byte. Messed around with Apple II's as well. Got out of programming altogether in the middle 80's except for database programming for end user applications for awhile first using Borland products, then Microsoft, then a bit of SQL.

Database taught me practical applications of matrix math that I learned in for Pascal programming back in the day. I hated that mini-computer's compiling of Pascal to this day. Never would get the code to work right because of bugs.

Ironically, I suspect the solution is to follow some type of formula.

Such as, you reach a conclusion, then your next step is to make some kind of list of possible objections, or alternative explanations for the result. Or even employing a technique, either yourself or someone else, to be the "devil's advocate."

162 I don't know how many people this works for, but studying from books helps me because I can often remember where a paragraph that mentions a topic comes from on a particular page. And in "the humanities". Sometimes with literature, I can remember something about what a page looks like for years.

My advice on that? Be silly. Don't self-censor. Sometimes it's helpful to think of the opposite. I used to do that in teaching my students how to write.

"What makes something really appalling to read? Totally impenetrable? Shifts in subject within a paragraph? Or worse, within a sentence? Vague references ("this shows X," after a list of 17 things; which one is "this?")?

That gets the juices going, and can help with coming up with ideas outside the box.

I often find that happening to me. Sometimes I just have to make a list of short 3-word descriptions of those points I want before I forget them.

Other times I outline - write the structure of the paper, and the purpose of each paragraph. (Intro, summary, point 1, evidence of a, address other issues,...) This is basic and I usually don't need to to it but sometimes I find my writing is jumbled and the logic keeps bouncing around. Then you outline and that constrains what you are saying while still making sure all the key points are covered.

As for thinking outside the box - that is tougher and not sure how to improve that. Maybe experience in many fields helps.

229 I taught undergraduate physics, back in the day. One trick I showed students who had test anxiety was to treat the example problems in the textbook as mini-quizzes with instant feedback. Cover up the worked solution. Treat the setup like it is a real quiz. Create the same environment as the classroom (no music or other distractions, plain table, etc). Then time yourself. See how you did compared to the worked solution, see what you missed and what you got right.

My advice: don't worry about coherence. Just get all of your thoughts out, on paper, and worry about coherence later. So what if the first version is stream of consciousness? The first version of the Pieta was a lump of marble. Give yourself permission to produce a rough rough draft. Prepare to be amazed.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara

This!
Get all your thoughts down in separate sentences.
Move those sentences into some order and expand on them with more sentences. Try to go from simple to complex; but, that isn't really important.
Write intro telling what you're going to tell them.
Write conclusion telling them what you told them.

The above got me through an MBA program after being out of college for 17 years. It helped a lot when I took the prerequisites for the BS in Nursing too.

252 Other times I outline - write the structure of the paper, and the purpose of each paragraph.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest at January 09, 2021 08:44 PM (LWu6U)

You're absolutely correct that Outlining is a key necessity for any serious writing. Start with bullet points listing what you want to talk about, then organize, if one is really burning in your mind write that paragraph and then figure out where it fits in. Outlining helps stop a writer from rambling on and on just because it's on a point you like a lot.

This might well be some sort of CIA PsyOp to disrupt communication among their opposition, just like the mass bannings on Big Tech. She was a bitch. She drove off all the boys. She drove off me the same way. But I rolled with the punches. Dodged like a butterfly danced like a bee. She was cruel. I was amusing. We became friends.

Say, how do you get straight A's? She told me she studies. What? She reads the text. What? She takes notes. What? Then rewrites them neater. What? Then she reviews what she wrote. What? Then the tests are the exact same thing as the notes. WHAT? I thought the books were for carrying back and forth. I thought books were for us to babysit. She changed my life. She taught me how to study. All those other schools did not. She did. She wins. She was beautiful then. Quite the Nancy. Now she is fat. Fat and smart as hell. If you have an interest in spreading this around, consider getting in touch with a local homeschoolers group. I bet they would love to have a talk on this for their high school seniors. I know I sure would have.

The handwritten notes versus on the laptop would be a hard sell, however. Kids today don't do much writing. And I myself can type much faster than I can write. Sometimes in college I would find myself taking notes and forgetting the rest of what I wanted to write before I finished because the prof had moved on and I had something else to write. I think I would have loved having a laptop.

313 Berserker, much like math or foreign language, I'd guess music could serve to keep the brain "young", or at least combat aging.

Kinda related: the USS California was one of the battleships "sunk" (in 40 feet of water) at Pearl Harbor. While she was being raised and repaired, the crew was mostly re-assigned.

Back then, battleships had bands (a world we can only dream of - battleships ..... with their own bands). Some of the unemployed band members were sent to Station Hypo, the code-breaking Navy unit at Pearl. The one that, among other things, provided the key info enabling the Midway victory.

Turned out the musicians were so naturally adept at their code-breaking tasks, that in the enormous ramp-up of cryptographic organizations that followed during the war, people with musical backgrounds were specifically sought out as recruits. Makes sense - that music/math thinggy about brain wiring that's beyond me, but sounds truthy.

They sat on stage and told stories about their careers and it was one of the best bits of entertainment I've been to, it was like being in the living room of 3 good friends just playing and shooting the breeze.

While they were talking, it became obvious that not only did Lovett remember every group he had played a gig with for the last 30 years, he remembered the names of every single one of their band members, and the exact date they played together. Just off the top of his head.

It worked for me with literature books, or text based things like history, biography, and such; but not technical books, with formula, equations, and such.

Guys who were accustomed to making huge stakes decisions in seconds or minutes.

These were the guys who would direct the task force's air assets to deal with Japanese attacks, allocating resources under severe time constraints. With, obviously, incredibly high stakes.

This is actually a common problem with young students who find it easy to stay ahead of their classmates; it's easy to coast and get grades without working, and the teachers pay all their attention to those who fall behind. You can go a very long way without ever having to learn "how to learn", and it's a shame. A better system would catch that, but we don't have it.

Posted by: IC - tis the season for election fraud ho ho ho at January 09, 2021 09:15 PM (a0IVu)

I've been looking into what's being said about Pence. It's coming a little more into focus, and it's not good. Somebody claimed that Pence isn't even invited to the meeting dealing with TheSteal. I can't confirm that, but I don't doubt it.

There's a short clip that has stuck in my head. The acting SecDef making some side personal comments to Pence, sitting behind him, on 19DEC. I read it completely differently the first time I saw it, vs the last time. The first time I took it at face value. The second time was within the context of a claim that the two barely know each other (which I cannot confirm, but could be true.)

I think SecDef's body language is pure rage towards Pence. He briefly speaks of major complex ops going on (looking into the steal, I assume), then starts heaping on this ridiculously exaggerated and absurd glowing praise. I take it as calling him out for everything he SHOULD be, but is the opposite instead. Judge for yourself (it's short): https://tinyurl.com/y5asffut

388 Some things just require rote memorization. The multiplication tables are a good example.
Posted by: Jmel

"rote memorization" is referred to in school today as "drill and kill", emphasizing something beyond memorization.
When I was an undergrad at a well known university in Cleveland, one of the professors in the Chemistry Dept was a man who would someday be a Nobel Laureate (Geoge Olah, won the Nobel Prize in 1991 in Organic Chemistry). A friend of mine who was an upper classman had him for an advanced Organic Chemistry course. One of the things Dr. Olah expected was knowing a lot of basic organic reactions, which...surprise....you had to memorize.
I related this little anecdote to one of my son's elementary school teachers some years ago, who had ridiculed rote memorization, and they were also kind of dismissive of that. The is what you call educational conditioning. Dr. Jill has a degree in that, you know.

400 The mostly unknown 4th Marine base, contiguous, going from Matthews in the west eastwards, was Camp Gillespie in El Cajon. Para-Marine based. Brief experiment by USMC with airborne operations. There were two brigades of same at Lakehurst, NJ. All were disbanded and folded into the infantry before any saw action, as it was clear the Marines' assignment - the Pacific - offered little prospect of airborne operations.

Now a civilian general aviation airport. I recall the towers there, back in the day. Also the large pool - only one in the county, at that time, large and deep enough to have floating goals for water polo, as is proper. We got blown out there in our first/last CIF game my senior year.

One of the early things I memorized which was always of great use (and I can't believe that kids aren't still required to memorize it!) as the 12 by 12 square, every combination from 1x1 to 12x12. When it's laid out in a square so you see how they all relate visually, it is much easier to memorize, and after that every one of those combos is at your fingertips.
