26 This reminds me of Casper David Freidrich's paintings of crosses in the wilderness. But Friedrich's are more mystical, where here it feels heavy-handed. It think I would like this painting better without the aura around the cross or the sunbeams. Although, the aura also recalls Irish High Crosses, so there's that.

46 Talk about appropriate!!

This is a softer style than many of Cole's other paintings but it is fitting for the subject. He hints at time passing, glory from the cross, even blood in the heavy use of rusty red color. Cole set up an atmosphere in the painting that will have the viewers shift their impressions as they focus on different aspects of the art. Very effective.

57 It is.

From the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid. Sounds like a tax sale to the Spanish State.

Here is the museum info on the painting:
Towards the end of his life Thomas Cole executed a final series of paintings on religious subjects known as The Cross and the World.

In it, the artist -- a pioneering landscape painter considered the founder of the Hudson River School -- depicted a sublime vision of nature that became the vehicle for his quest for salvation and spiritual knowledge.

58 Reminds me of a quote by Ben Franklin: " I have said he, often and
often, in the course of the session, and the vicissitudes of my hopes
and fears as to its issue, looked at that behind the President, without
being able to tell whether it was rising or setting; but now at length, I have the happiness to know, that it is a rising, and not a setting sun."

62 About this painting:

Cross at Sunset is not part of that series but is extremely close to it. It depicts an impressive cross in the foreground, to the left of which and some way away is a bell tower.

Behind these two elements a valley recedes into the distance where mountains are outlined against the horizon. The light from the setting sun spreads out like a fan and assumes a fantastical character, establishing a dialogue with the cross in the foreground, which radiates its own light.

97 One of my ancestors was a Thomas Cole. He lived in Alabama and was killed by Yankee raiders at the end of the war. They murdered his servants and hung him repeatedly trying to find out where he hid his money. He didn't tell them and they left him to die on the floor of his house. His gold has never been found. The legend about it still persists in the area.

America as an idea will live on, and in some future where people are tired of corrupt authoritarian shenanigans, another Great Republic will be built, using the lessons of ours, as we did every experiment in democracy before it.

On our Great Seal is the unfinished pyramid - the work is never complete, but the eye of Providence watches and gives its boon or blight. Remember what was, and remember the Lord. Our enemies will not endure, because they cannot acknowledge truth, nor make straight the crooked timber that is man, no matter how much they bend, cut, and shave it.

You could make the argument that the American Empire began around the time of the Spanish-American War, with our taking over of the Phillippines and sending the Great White Fleet around the world.

I'd say we are Late Empire - overextended, overtaxed, overspending, a devalued currency and a series of imbecilic emperors with the occasional "good" emperor trying and failing to halt the slide. The Senate is a joke and the barbarians encouraged to poke at the borders to judge our weakness. Trump is not our Trajan or Marcus Aurelius. Perhaps our Antoninus Pius.

Anyway, Elagabalus and Romulus Augustulus are right ahead.

Both; and a lot of Romans felt it coming, and wrote about it. There weren't enough of those who cared and understood to stop anything. So they immersed themselves in religion, or drunkenness, or sexual liasons of all types. 170 I, wonder, as Rome was falling, how many Roman Citizens understood what was happening to them?

There's a poem by a Roman nobleman named Rutilius Claudius Namatianus, called "De Reditu Suo" (On His Return) written in 416. He's describing leaving Rome and returning to his family estates in Gaul, and it's a fascinating snapshot of how the Empire was falling apart at that time. He had to go by ship, because the roads were no longer maintained, and were infested with bandits or returning to woodland. He seems aware that things aren't the way they used to be, but he can't really grasp that Rome is past the point of no return. He keeps thinking that Rome has been through tough patches in the past, and eventually things will come around and get back to normal. It was just unthinkable that Rome could really collapse; it was the Eternal City, after all, it had ALWAYS been there.

178 I've said this before, but it's particularly apropos with this painting.

Almost twenty centuries ago, a rabbi was crucified. He was a subject of the most corrupt and evil empire of its day. By all earthly accounts, his three year ministry was a failure. He had drawn crowds of thousands before, and now they vanished. The twelve men that had been with him for three years all betrayed him in various and sundry ways.

About three hundred years later, however, a Christian emperor conquered that entire territory - up to Rome, in fact. Without the internet, without even a printing press. 300 years is a blink of an eye, historically speaking.

Trump is not the Way. He only exposed a way forward for us. He's not going to be the one to reform this country; he was just one man that did what he could, and is in the process of being crushed for it.

We are going to need to take up our mantle and do the work ourselves. That work starts today.

211 Republican government as designed by the Founders worked best with an educated electorate with a shared culture, such as an appreciation for limited government and self-sufficiency.
But the idea of limited govt and inherent rights of man was a unique concept, with the rest of the world being mostly tribal. We're moving back to the tribal world now, which plays well into plans of socialist totalitarianism, again by design.

219 I disagree that Rome was "the most corrupt and evil empire of its day". For one thing, the Roman Empire was just at its beginning; people at the time of Christ still could remember the Republic. I think Chesterton was right when he wrote about the coming of Christ at this particular time and place: "All the rest of
the world was a welter of barbarism. It is essential to recognize that the
Roman Empire was recognized as the highest achievement of the human race; and
also as the broadest. A dreadful secret seemed to be written as in obscure
hieroglyphics across those mighty works of marble and stone, those colossal
amphitheaters and aqueducts. Man could do no more"

I feel the same way about America. Now we see it sinking into corruption and evil, but a century ago it was not seen that way. It was seen as a great and good force in the world. But again, it has reached the limits of purely human ingenuity, and now that it has lost the Christian soul it once had, it is sinking and falling.

259 I feel the same way about America. Now we see it sinking into corruption and evil, but a century ago it was not seen that way. It was seen as a great and good force in the world. But again, it has reached the limits of purely human ingenuity, and now that it has lost the Christian soul it once had, it is sinking and falling.

I agree with you, and that is a very good way to put it. Winning WW2, going to the moon, ending poverty in any real sense; we've done all that. Now we're sinking into anti-science, endless entertainment, drugs, and perversion. We've gone over the top of the roller coaster ride.

After the peak, people inside the culture always believe "well why can't we do that again?" But that's now how it works, not for any culture. After the peak comes the long, long fall.

260 From the San Diego Unified School District's page on "Restorative Justice:"

Lower rates of suspensions and expulsions have also been found to increase the academic scores of non-suspended students. A study published in the American Sociological Review (Winter, 2014), involving over 17,000 students in 17 middle schools and high schools in a Kentucky school district, found that students who have never been in trouble do worse at schools with higher suspension rates.

Giving everyone who shows up and signs their name an "A" increases academic scores even more.

That idea always comes up, and now we can look at Russia and China, two systems which actually do that. In practice, what it means is that you have a certain number of poweful oligarchs who control the levers of government, and they are allowed to use the Tax machinery to destroy anyone who isn't a member of their club. So, the Oligarchy is enforced in perpetuity. Actually, that's Russia - China is now the special case where one man has managed to get hold of every aspect of governmental, social, and economic power, and Xi is now an Emperor who is as powerful, maybe even more powerful, than any Emperor China has had in the last 2300 years.

As has been noted, the least of his powers is that anyone inside his Empire who displeases him immediately "disappears".

328 the trillions being thrown into "the economy" mostly goes to the rich via the markets, and some real estate I guess. DOW 50K, sure maybe. They do intend to inflate their way "out". Or maybe just till the decide on a crypto currency, and a World Bank central control.

Markets are already in a bubble ... it could end at any time, should have already ended, but prices are kept low, they can't fabricate enough inflation in general prices (they seek 3%, have under 2%?, can't just print it). Commodities still look good, but "currency collapse" could happen in different ways. --- Better to hedge bets, but those that trusted BigGov to make DOW go ever higher have been winners.

We have been talking for years about how the Markets have become disconnected from the real economy, and now I believe the break is complete. Market prices are simply going to be a reflection of how much free cash is being pumped into the system from the Fed; as interest rates are kept artificially low to preserve the appearance of normalcy, this money will have to flow into other assets, such as equites and real property. (and other more volatile schemes always emerge at times like this)

Different stocks will go up and down because the traders make a lot of money from volatility. No one cares what the price is, as long as it moves a lot.

Started a farm business.....Tax write off for 2 years. Helps with self sufficiency, even sunk a well for irrigation (also a write off). As a bonus, its a essential biz so no dumbass politician can shut you down.
Bought a rental property.....can depreciate it and almost any home improvement project can be written off.
So I am running 3 biz, 1 Corp, 1 LLC (for the rental property) and 1 sole proprietor - At least one of them will break even or lose money every year.
If you have a biz start a profit sharing 401K. You can duck social security and medicare tax on the profit sharing portion.

I don't even feel up to blaming Pence by this point. The whole system is exhausted, there's just nothing to draw on anymore. Remember the Star Trek TNG episode where Data built a daughter named Lal? She eventually breaks down because she can't synthesize human feeling with her android nature. Data tries and tries to repair her, reattaching circuits and rebuilding pathways, but every time he fixes one thing, something else collapses. Eventually he has to accept reality; she's reached the end of her existence. We're at that point now; the human material necessary to a functioning society has rotten out. Trying to build anything good and lasting with this stuff is doomed.

It is apparent the ones who actually DO vote care, and are intent on maintaining their iron grip on their neighborhoods and districts, exactly like mob bosses.

But the actual black eligible voters? I'm reasonably sure they just stay home, say "none of the above," and their votes are then just dutifully cast for the Democrats. It's been this way for a long time, and mail-in voting just made it infinitely easier.

Agree. The Constitution was the sole legal point of connection between the states. Refusing to adjudicate interstate disputes was a refusal to conduct the court's constitutional duty. No other part of the document is any more relevant than the part it unilaterally nullified.

In refusing its duty, the court shredded the Constitution, and thus its own legitimacy and that of the US government built upon it.

428 Global IQ is peaking sometime around today or at most a few years back.
See Flynn effect(personally I think this calls into question the
effectiveness of the metric but if you're going to use IQ). When exactly
do you think the Industrial Revolution occurred?

the Flynn Effect correlates to the effects of culture and the more stimulating environment we live in, e.g. being better at spatial reasoning due to using electronic devices from an early age -- it does not measure biological intelligence. Innate biological intelligence that offsets the Flynn effect shows a peak over 100 years ago. the Industrial Revolution was the turning point where the more educated started having smaller families

or so some studies say, as you point out IQ is a lot of grey areas so who knows

In return I think China has promised to start buying US assets, pumping up debt, and welcoming companies in for business. This will look as if it has offset financial problems entirely. However, none of these things from China will last. But our oligarchs are only worried about the short term.

Also, I think there have been some threats of China style assassinations of US (not China) oligarchs and their families.

won't matter. covid will become unnecessary once the electoral votes are counted for biden.

463 ...He looked confused, and then he handed me two $10's as change, and he tried to explain why that was right. I know I should have just taken it, but it was just too stupid for me not to point it out.

I wish I could say this was rare. But they count on that damned machine for everything, and if you fool them at the last second, they're toast.

I think it might have been 4 years ago, but I had a kid actually count change back to me from a $20. I was shocked. And, told them how awesome they were. Sadly, I was probably one of the only people that ever noticed.

I bought the property next door as a rental property. Added the land to my homestead which freezes the taxes. Im trying to get to 4 acres, the minimum for AG exemption on the land.(I have 3+ now so I'm close) Pecan tree farm is the easiest to get. Plant the seedlings in the density required, put a little pipe around them, document it. Wait 5 years. They don't even have to live. They can all die, doesn't matter.

Respectfully disagree. COVID is part of a global plan, and is going on worldwide. It has nothing to do with US politics. Plus... they like the control of picking winners and losers. And creating dependence on the government.
All part of The Great Reset; John Kerry has stated we're all in and we're going to accelerate it. "You will own nothing and be happy."

475 China will now fully control the economy. Hyperinflation will only occur if it is in their interests for it to occur. If/when they view us as an extension of themselves, it won't. We will just be managed.

I think it's unavoidable, at this point.

We already have informants, known as "Karen" in every neighborhood. At some point, a Karen will denounce the wrong person and the ball will be opened.

478 the Flynn Effect correlates to the effects of culture and the more stimulating environment we live in, e.g. being better at spatial reasoning due to using electronic devices from an early age -- it does not measure biological intelligence. Innate biological intelligence that offsets the Flynn effect shows a peak over 100 years ago. the Industrial Revolution was the turning point where the more educated started having smaller families

or so some studies say, as you point out IQ is a lot of grey areas so who knows
Posted by: brak at January 06, 2021 11:08 AM (cG+eD)

Even if that component were possible to isolate(which I don't think it really is) a person with 'equal' paper IQ(which should translate into a higher equivalent score) today ought to come across as more intelligent than a person of a century+ ago even if the difference was created by environmental factors. As Tom Servo noted it seems quite apparent that modern people aren't smarter or better educated than people were 100 or even 200 years ago.

I would tend to point to maturity as a key cause. Exposure to more complicated subjects and tasks at a young age leads to more developed adults.

479 I'm just a little tired of hearing about securing "future" elections. Why do people still believe? Do they actually clean up the voter rolls in between elections? No. At least not in Wi, where the usual gambit is to wait until after primaries are held to bring it up as a wedge issue, wait for the court decision that says there's not enough time before the general to do so, and so the issue remains for the next cycle.

Just like guns. Just like abortion. Just like any of the issues that could be resolved for good or ill, but resolved nonetheless. They are not because they are the issues that make the electorate think politicians are necessary and important. We need them to make sure the "other guys" don't win, and by golly the stalemate they've managed to win for us proves how valuable they are. So the issues never, ever, ever get solved. It's by design.

You wonder why both parties look at their voters with contempt? Well, at least one party throws their dogs a bone once in a while.

481 For those in Ohio, I just received a letter from Rep. Troy Balderson, who has said he does not believe in overturning the electoral college votes. If there were irregularities, they were addressed in court and thrown out. Plus, they did would not have changed the result of the election. But he is committed to seeing that fraud in the future is looked at.

Guess who is not voting for Troy Balderson?
