I had an emotionally draining yet also gratifying and very humbling end to 2020.
I have been at my company and division (various jobs) for a bit better than decade. Today was my last day, and I start my new job on Monday. Around midday, I sent a "thank you and goodbye" E-Mail out to my division and various individuals elsewhere in the company. Today is a holiday and most people are not at work. Despite that, I have gotten replies from more than 50 people thanking me, saying they'll miss me and wishing me the best. I did not expect it and I'd be lying if I said my eyes didn't water at some of them. It's a bittersweet but on balance surprisingly nice end to both the year and a huge chapter of my life. Creative God, you make all things news in heaven and on earth. We come to you on the cusp of a New Year with new desires and old fears, new decisions and old controversies, new dreams and old weaknesses. Because you are a God of hope, we know that you create all the possibilities of the future. Because you are a God of love, we know that you accept all our mistakes of the past. Because you are the God of our faith, we enter your gates with praise, and we come into your presence thanking you for being with us, and we serve and bless you. Amen. Being from Crook County, the thing that impressed me the most about going out west was how big it is. Funny thing to say but it's so big you can't see it all in one look. Grand Canyon was like that for me. No matter how long I looked I couldn't see it all. Got used to the open country after awhile and could feel things closing in as I got closer to home.

We drove late afternoon from Vegas in August where it was 120 degrees in a car with no air conditioning, it was like putting a fan on your oven door and blowing it at you. Froze overnight, slept a couple hours on hood of car as only had shorts and t-shirt. Next morning my 2 guys wanted breakfast, 2 old buddies and me were going to hike down 15 minutes. 2 or 3 hours later we were at the river.

If you are interested in a commercial river rafting experience through the GC (each raft accommodates about 8 plus the crew), I can recommend Arizona River Runners. Their website is raftarizona.com Most clients book a 7-day raft adventure. They cook for you & take good care of you. My kids, who were 10 at the time, loved it. LOTS of rapids! I will never forget my "Grand Canyon cocktails" which I enjoyed every night: grape Kool Aid; vodka; & a teaspoon of fine white sand (courtesy of the wind). Most of the clients who book these trips are young, outdoorsy couples, who thought Zero was a really cool president! So... I kept my mouth shut mostly. It's a bittersweet but on balance surprisingly nice end to both the year and a huge chapter of my life. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at December 31, 2020 07:55 PM (FNA9s) That's such a nice story. When I was in client support in Ohio, my last day was the day after Thanksgiving. I stayed an extra few weeks just so I could work that Friday and give her a four day weekend. Clients loved me. And I loved my clients. I was best client support people they ever had - connecting to their databases and fixing errors within minutes of their tickets. But my last goodbye letter to company people was how it was Friday after Thanksgiving and there was almost no one in the building. I went up to the front desk to get some candy. There was a cute mouse there. He looked at me. I looked at him. I tried to step on him because I was unarmed. He ran into the nearby closet. And it was the day after Thanksgiving so I wasn't going to hunt him down. Posted by: Stateless Infidel at December 31, 2020 08:18 PM (v2c9/) 168

My great uncle Mike's birthday was Jan 1. He always had an open house party with all the old folks. The washer and dryer off the kitchen were covered by a towel and then with gallons of booze and mixers. There were snacks everywhere and we always had the Rose Bowl on the big console television in the den.
Damn. The old folks would get schnockered. Then the old women would chase us kids around to pinch our faces and kiss our cheeks. We kids would play croquet in the backyard and sneak drinks out of the kitchen. And eat ALL the junk food. Uncle Mike and his brother, my grandfather, were Navy boys. I do not think they would be afraid of the wuflu. I think the party would rate on. Posted by: Nurse ratched at December 31, 2020 08:23 PM (U2p+3) 201

Realistically, for me either. I work in construction, which is an "essential" field in Indiana. But the psychological toll of separation and especially masks is something I fear greatly. This is not right, it's not human. And then throw in the stolen election, which ends the Republic if allowed to stand. So in the end, 2020 really sucked. I will have faith that God has a plan. The best thing about being in the Military is the health insurance.
Posted by: Nevergiveup at December 31, 2020 08:47 PM (85Gof) yeah, basically free health care. When you get out and on medicare, there might be a tiny bit that is not covered but even then I have not seen it occur in the end. Tricare usually covers anything Medicare doesn't. I believe pretty much every real issue is taken care of if you are in the service. And the pension is almost unheard of these days in the private sector outside a few industries. NGU: "Then don't do that." I'm reading a book, The Reach of Rome, which is an imaginary tour around the Empire during Trajan's reign, following a silver sestertius as it passes from hand to hand. In one chapter, the author gives some samples of Roman jokes. Yours reminded me of it: A man goes to the doctor. 'Doctor,' he says, when I get up in the morning, I ache, I vomit, my hands shake and my bowels are loose. Then, half an hour later, I'm fine and feel good for the rest of the day. What should I do?' B) yes. 20 years is for standard retirement, full retirement pay is reached at 30. But The VA normally treats people who served much less time. The military hospitals at least used to treat retirees but when the wars abroad of the 2000s started, they did their best to send them to civvies but still cover most of it. AFAIK, you could get VA benefits if you ever served on
active duty other than for training. The benefits are different for different people and circumstances for sure. But lots of guys served in combat and though they only were in uniform a few years, they will have VA benefits the rest of their life. Again, , the real answers come from the VA itself. There are many different classifications of service. i can mention one though. It wasn't but a five or six years ago they decided that those that served in the National Guard for at least 20 years were to be considered veterans, even if they were never called up for active deployment. Posted by: Quint at December 31, 2020 09:11 PM (Ls0fP) 397
Some might find it odd that
someone who was in the National Guard for 19 years is sill not considered a "veteran' by this country. But the word veteran is a loaded word to the government. To many of us is means someone who served in uniform. To the government, it means an obligation, that they owe them something. I only mention this to give an example of how complicated it can be. But for sure there are those who get VA benefits who did not serve 20 years. Posted by: Quint at December 31, 2020 09:12 PM (Ls0fP) 398

They dont' want to leave poor veterans alone. And that is a good thing without a doubt. There are so many classifications really, you need to check with the VA itself. There are guys who were Lieutenants were are medically retired, they get full retirement. Even a famous/infamous tv talking head was a retired Major. My point is each circumstance in different. But if you served on active duty for the US, you have some VA benefits. Not retirement in many cases but some benefit. I always heard you should contact your local DAV and they have people that volunteer to help people work through the morass. Get everything you have coming to you, it is the least this country owes. Daily we sense the attacks multiplying of those who want to destroy the very basis of society: the natural family, respect for human life, love of country, freedom of education and business. one last thing re VA benefits and hospitals. Generally, retirees, at least in the past went to military hospitals like Walter Reed, Bethesda, Ft. Sam etc. Those were the hospitals that treat active duty and retirees mostly.
But VA hospitals are other places. They support the VA and treat anyone with VA medical benefits. Also, the VA does disability pay and many other things. AFAIK, anyone who served on active duty, or is considered by this country to be a "veteran" has some benefits coming to them. It can be complicated, but again, if you are in doubt, check with the VA or local DAV chapter. Posted by: Quint at December 31, 2020 09:50 PM (Ls0fP) 523

If you're doing a rod trip the Grand Canyon, stop in at the Cameron Trading Post, have a Navajo Taco in the restaurant while you check out the woodwork and the tin ceiling in the restaurant there. There's a Major gift shop with lots of Navajo crafts for sale. Interesting place.
For real Northern Arizona, roll on up to Page, right on the Utah/Arizona border, check out Lake Powell. Do this to see some real, wide open country. Just make sure the vehicle's cooling system is up to par. There's lots of miles and miles, no services 'till you get to Page, except for The Gap, Arizona.
