NBA Christmas Ratings Down "Massively" From Last Year's

LOL. Learn to code, sub-cretins.

The NBA put its best and shiniest presents under the tree of the American television viewer on Christmas Day and America said, no thanks.

The NBA, which uses Christmas Day to showcase their best games and talent to jumpstart their season, had their gifts returned by viewers who were less than enthused.

According to DEADLINE Hollywood:

The National Basketball Association's day-long celebration of sports led the demos, scoring a 1.1 and 3.74 million total audience for its hours-long programming for ABC and ESPN. That's the good news -- the bad news is that's down massively from past performances. In a season where the NBA is trying to lure back fans who were turned off by last season’s overt politics and the less-stimulating bubble version of the sport, it shows there’s a lot of ground to make up.

ShowBuzz Daily reports that viewership for the Lakers-Mavs game peaked at 3.959 million. As a point of comparison, last year’s Christmas Day headlining matchup between the Lakers and Clippers averaged just under seven million.

Needless to say, that’s a humbling result for the NBA.

Did you even know the NBA was putting on their crappy show again?

One cool thing about cutting the cord is that it's kind of nice to be off the constant IV drip of Corporate TV messaging.

Question: Has anyone else cut the cord since November? If so, what's your experience like?

14 The NBA had ratings on Christmas Eve because nothing else was on. No parades, only one college football game, and little else. They had like five games on national TV, and a small amount of Americans figured they'd watch that garbage.

Excellent recommendation on the Roku system. The Hisense is great, especially for the price at Costco.

39 I've cut the cord since November. My family and I haven't noticed much of a difference, as we only rarely watched cable anyway (as it turns out). We're all on the Roku now and have been for some time.
Got upgraded internet instead (for cheaper than the prior "double-play" deal). When you're paying for a minimal basic cable package anyway, its amazing what the portion of your bill is comprised of fees and taxes.
Anyway, no more money for ESPN, Fox News, CNN, etc.

42 My lovely wife and I moved into a rental place in June while our new place is being built. We stream the stuff we care about and so did not pick up a new cable subscription after cancelling our old one in our previous house. Haven't missed it. The only things we don't get easily are local news - which we like to have on in the background when eating dinner; for the weather and sports - and sports shows. I'm not a huge sports watcher, prefer to listen to the local baseball and football games on the radio while I do other stuff.

Haven't really missed either. There are plenty of great shows on the various services (just finished 'Wayne' on Prime, terrific) and we can stream pretty much any movie we want.

Zero pop culture shows.

Now me and the missus invested in the complete Perry Mason T.V. series from the 50's and 60's. We watch an episode or two every night. Good times and saving $130+ a month.

--

While we still have satellite (Mr. Black can't let go of his Nascar), it is rarely watched. We have dozens of DVD series of shows we grew up with. From the 60s-80s mostly. Lots of fun, good entertainment. I never get tired of them. Those were the days: Before Woke. When everything was fun, good entertainment, and fairly wholesome.

A point that has been made before is that sure, their attendance should be down, but their overall viewership should actually be up. Those fans should be watching on TV while people should have fewer overall options to occupy their time than before.

Instead, sports are seeing their viewership decline while things like gaming is increasing in its place.

And do you think the 20-30 somethings of today really watch sports or talk about it? Honestly, you want to avoid them to escape the Woke Police. But once you get used to just having a data plan then it's super simple to download any TV episode you want from the streaming sites for free.
That way you can watch any show you want, without any commercials at all. It totally breaks their business model. All I have is a data plan, but I still can binge watch any show I want whenever I want. Hollywood gets zero money from me.

I saw him a few years back on an old crime show rerun. Murderer abducted a cigarette store girl in the very early morning hours, got her into her car, made her drive to a field and I think shot her in the head for no reason. Gowdy was the prosecutor.

204 Most of me misses what sports used to be. Because I liked it. I enjoyed it. It bonded the community and the family - even when you were arguing over it. It was fun for most people, even as the athletes became wealthier and the tickets more costly.
But more and more of me is hoping some of it dies off. The NBA as my least favorite sport and considering that college basketball was killed years ago would be my top choice. It seems like sports may be in for a long decline. If I was a betting man, I would bet we have reached peak salary. But I wouldn't bet much. Ratings go down, but there are more ways than ever to watch and digitize and gamble, so maybe overall things are up. We probably need a couple years post-Pandemic to truly gauge what will become.

Maybe a little humiliating among the athletes and owners will help save their sports. I don't know where things will shake out, but I suspect the owners and players are worried. But I'm betting most will just blame COVID at this point in an effort to avoid facing the hard truths now.

THe thing is? Those explanations they give for why they don't give more money are all true.

They really do have to sit on inventory hoping it sells, and that costs them.
They really do get stiffed a lot and have to make up the money somewhere else.
They really do have a lot of people to pay, especially that place, and personnel is the highest cost for employers.

If no one above mentioned this -- Get an indoor tv antenna and some coax cable at your local big box store. That's if you are in brodcast range of over-air stations. You may have to move the antenna around to find a sweet spot. The best starting point plan is to aim the antenna towards the xmit tower, thru a window not a wall. Give it a try - not much cost.

I haven't watched series anything since I last watched TWD probably over two years ago. Now, the only thing I watch regularly are Twitch streams VODs, which are free and free of politics and social justice hectoring. It's all original, and it's all available when I want it.I can support the streamer as much or as little as I want.
I have beat this drum
before, but here it is again. In one DayZ (post-apocalypse survival
game) Twitch stream VOD, I get action, drama, comedy, noise in the
background, whatever, all for the cost of my internet connection. My favorites are TheRunningManZ, TopeRec, and probably Smoke, although I watch some other streamers as well, on occasion.

322 A lot of people grew up just constantly having the TV on in the background and feel oddly disconnected and alone without that. Pluto.TV is great for replacing that comforting background noise for people who still want that background noise.

I mostly just watch stuff on YouTube (with an AdBlocker so I don't ever see any YouTube ads) and listen to podcasts for entertainment now. I have a data plan but that's it. Hollywood doesn't get another dime from me.

The free streaming sites really are great. If I get the urge to binge watch something from Netflix or Amazon or HBO, I just download it for free from the streaming sites. Can watch it on my computer or TV. It's super easy to setup your own media server these days.

I want black Americans to succeed under the same promises of liberty and excellence as is available to all Americans. I don't want to be dragged down into a shithole of self-loathing and handouts.

343 Iasonas, it depends on what you want in an MMO. If keeping up with endgame and doing raids is your thing I don't know that there's any way to avoid the slog to keep up with hardcore players. You can minimize it by looking for recent games, I guess.

If you can live without being an endgame raider, I'd still recommend Lord of the Rings Online, despite the fact I'm not currently playing it (plan to go back eventually), which is an old game with a great deal of quests to do, and you earn store points while playing it which can be used for further quest content or conveniences.

412 If you are old enough and had cable you might remember when the DIY channel had useful shows: basic home repairs, bird watching, photography, and other hobbies, etc. Food Network showed how to cook instead of endless 'competitions'. Entertaining, well produced series like "Nero Wolfe" or "Remember WENN" were cancelled even though their ratings were good. TMC let you watch great old movies without an SJW diatribe. They are all gone, replaced by urban, 'hip' shows for well off yuppies. The news networks provide their own pathetic jokes. You could watch sports without being lectured.
And they wonder why people cut the cord?
Posted by: JTB at December 29, 2020 05:02 PM (7EjX1)
This.
Chip and Joanna Gaines have bought the DIY channel and are relaunching it with their own lineup of shows in January. The shows are dedicated to craftsman or small business owners with successful home and lifestyle business, such as flower farms, furniture builders, etc. They are doing episodes of their own remodeling show they left a couple of years ago, but missed it and are going to feature a few new homes they are redoing. No contests, no celebrity designers, etc. Starts streaming Jan. 4

415 I had free basic cable in my studio apartment in Wichita. Then I bought a home in Ark City and discovered that mid-level internet and basic cable would cost $129.00 per month so I said "screw thou" and took cable only.
But I missed Mornings With Maria and Stuart Varney, so I signed up with Sling at $35 per month so I could get Fox Business News. I snooped around a few months later and found Fox Biz online for free at watchnewslive.tv, so I shitcanned Sling. For entertainment I snooped around for free streaming and came across Pluto which turned out to be better than what I was paying for at Sling. Beavis and Butthead every night! And a 24/7 COPS channel! And a 24/7 Addams Family channel!
Screw cable. Who needs em? (I do miss watching 'Archer' which appears to be available only at a cost.)

416 Long ago, I enjoyed watching pro basketball. But about 20 years ago, it became boring and simple, and thuggish. The best shooter just sits from behind the 3 point line and launches, or everyone clears out and their star guard goes one on one.
Never a play, or even a pass.

Boring.

Even the WNBA plays a team game, but they have gone full anti-America on and off the court. And I've read more than one article that says they are 90% carpet munchers.

Not, as Jerry says, there is anything wrong with that.

The new improved deadly virus brewing over in old blighty is telling, all the right people are still getting full paychecks and benefits (government workers, teachers, etc) while the hated mercantile & middle classes are actively having their livelihoods and businesses crushed. Oh, and here's $600 peasant.

They see their chance to crush their enemies, and keep us under house arrest, enforced by law enforcement that meanwhile lets criminals run loose and terrorize us. And meantime they break all the lockdown rules every day because they are special and we are serfs.

That reminded me of a question I've wanted to ask The Horde:

Can anyone recall an ad with a black/white couple, with the guy being black? I vaguely recall a Lexus commercial a couple of years ago with that arrangement. It's odd, because most of the biracial couples I've encountered in real-life are black husband, white or hispanic wife. Gosh, I can't think of a reason why companies don't run ads with a black husband and white wife, in this woke ad age. Can you?

435 Cut the cord completely in September. I thought I would miss the NFL and I would cave but it never came close to happening.

My friends can't believe it. I was a season ticket holder for 20 years until the Red Zone channel made it more fun to stay at home. Then I saw the 2 hour pregame show to this years opener on Thursday night. The bar I was in was playing trivia so thankfully there was no volume on the TV.

It wasn't necessary to hear it. Apparently the NFL has decided that my kind is no longer welcome and they will do just fine with the new audience of viewers who never gave a shit about sports until they got woke.

The NBA has sucked for years. That over 3 million can watch that crap explains how Gilligan's Island was a #1 network show in its day.

446 jQuestion: Has anyone else cut the cord since November? If so, what's your experience like?

---

Part 1 - Back when women didn't have dicks

I cut the cord over a decade ago; back in the day fully replacing the cable experience was rarely satisfactory. Netflix was a godsend even with DVDs and when they went streaming, well, DVDs were still a godsend - the intertubes were less than robust. Getting an antenna that would work inside that didn't look like it belonged on top of destroyer was also a challenge. Still I so utterly despised cable companies and their content mind numbingly stupid content (well, expect for the reality shows I enjoyed, like COPS; those were fantastic and educational too) that I persisted; self abuse comes to mind here.

447 Question: Has anyone else cut the cord since November? If so, what's your experience like?

---

Part 2 - Today when women do have dicks

Today it is a whole different game. My Roku TV has reduced my life to a single remote, attaches to my sound system which allows me to share with my neighbors what I am watching. The streaming content is mind blowingly great and because you can also blow up your wallet with subscriptions I limit myself to a couple services. You make peace with what you are missing which at the end of the day is still mind numbingly stupid except for COPS which I get from free on Pluto (and yes, it is still educational). Even antennas have improved to something that is paper thin and about the size of a couple sheets of paper laid out side by side.

Cable is dead with the corpse just beginning to really rot. Yeah!

Especially YT videos, many, if not most are made by steeple and the regurgitate the "party line", even if it's unknowingly.
