An obituary for Hilaria's grandfather on her father's side stated that he was an American with roots in the country that "pre-dated the American Revolution," while a wedding announcement indicated that her grandfather's first wife (and mother of their children) hailed from Nebraska. Hilaria Baldwin’s CAA speaker page claims that she was born in Mallorca, Spain, as does her IMDb bio and Wikipedia page. She said on a podcast earlier this year: "I moved here [to America] when I was 19 to go to NYU from... my family lives in Spain, they live in Mallorca," adding, "I knew no pop culture." She has graced the cover of Hola! magazine, a Spanish-language publication based out of Madrid, where she was identified as a Spanish person in both the interview and its press release. Alec Baldwin has repeatedly referred to her as "Spanish" online. Every year there are dozens of examples, from authors faking their identity to get published (how many times did Oprah get nailed pushing some cracker author pretending to be Tahitian or something??) or activists pretending to be black or whatever.
How many times does this have to happen before people get it through their thick skulls that being white is the opposite of privilege and has been for decades?

He taught me how to watch movies through one of his books of movie reviews that my mother had around the house. I think he was much better in writing than on the show.
The show kind of stinks. 2.5 minutes of summarizing the movie and giving clips, and then about 30 seconds of the two quickly talking about what they liked or didn't. The "criticism" was laughably thin, but with 800 words in print, Ebert was better at making his case.

Yeah I think a lot of girls (these days at least) are praised at how mature and smart and good they are that they no longer feel the need to grow and mature so they just lock into it at age 15 or so.
There are always exceptions, of course, and the more home schooled and rural, the more likely the girl is exceptional.

Reminds me of my old boss who was Jewish, and had relatives that moved to Mexico. The family changed their name to a Hispanic last name and when it came time for the kids to go to college they all checked off the box for Hispanic and were able to get into the best schools with scholarships offered to Hispanics.

It shouldn't have been that hard to develop a Sherlock show that they could return to every couple of years, film 3-4 episodes in a month or two, and get great ratings, especially at a moderate cost.
The problem was taking it too big with Moriarty and the Reichenbach Falls. You reserve that for when the show goes stale. Until then, you just put out decent little mysteries with new settings and great opportunities for Sherlock and Watson to be witty to each other.

When revamped Who was coming out, I was loving it, so I went to try and start Doctor Who from the beginning.
I made it through two complete serials until I just quit. And I only made it through the second because it was the introduction of the Daleks.
Old Who was largely boring, though I did like City of Death. No other Tom Baker really appealed to me though.

In the 70s and early 80s, it wasn't like American TV sci-fi was any better. The original Battlestar Galactica was like a 10 mile high stack of cheese. (I always laughed at people who claimed Ron Moore's reboot was "desecrating" the original). Tom Baker-era Dr. Who fit in well. Especially when Anthony Ainley's Master showed up to chew so much scenery the walls would fall down and they'd accidentally be on Fawlty Towers' set or something.
I couldn't handle the 60s Dr. Who though, it was just deadly boring.

Our Meyer lemon trees finally produced well for the first time since we replaced a dead one that froze. The lemons were HUGE. And the satsuma tangerine tree produced for the first time since planting it three years ago.
I hope whoever "harvested" them enjoys them.

But tangentially related, Jenna Ortega had a long Instagram post after her show "Stuck in the Middle" ended. That is my favorite show. Great writing. Amazingly cute cast. And a celebration of family every episode. With touching endings that tear me up.
Anyways, in 2015, Disney put out a casting call because they were looking for a blonde, white girl named Hillary who was a genius child inventor. 2015 - genius Hillary...bastards..
But Jenna is told by her agent to go because it's good to be seen. So she goes to the audition. The second audition. Three. Four. Five. Six. Christmas comes and a call comes saying they are changing the script and didn't want to ruin everyone's holiday so everyone is still in the running.
She goes back, and the script is for an undetermined race or ethnicity. She continues for 6 more auditions and becomes Harley Diaz...stopping a Hillary propaganda fest.
It really is my favorite show. Incredibly sweet. Adorable cast. Every episode is about the importance of family. Focus on science. Sappy endings. So hispanic girl takes away white girls job and I'm more than fine with that.

When I was a JPMorganChase they spent a bazillion $$ on voice recognition software for their phone menus. Dozens and dozens of languages and even regional differences were accounted for. Honestly, it worked pretty well.
Except for Scottish English. No kidding - we could simply not get the application to understand a Scot. Somewhere floating around there are recordings of our testing with folks from Glasgow. OMG.

ah, if it has a lot of different fruit then it was grafted at the nursery. It's relatively easy to do with citurs, since all of the trees are basically the same, just varying in their fruit. I grew up with beautiful grapefruit trees in the yard, much sweeter than you find in stores today. and some of those Ponderosa lemons that look like little footballs.

one of the little things I liked about the movie "Slingblade" is that it was set in Southern Arkansas, and he used a lot of locals in the movie. Not surprisingly, all the voices were perfect in that one. I know that may sound surprising to say about Slingblade, but they were.

Same voice coach, I'm guessing. Yeah its a flat, dry, kind of authentic American accent from no recognizable region. Generic. Brits usually do American accents better than Americans do Brit but most of the time you can tell its not real.
Its less often now than it used to be but people mispronouncing "Oregon" used to happen a lot in TV and movies. I'm from AHregAWN or some such crap.

It's rampant in U.S culture also. A couple of examples; saying "The terrorist were apprehended." Where's the plural? Journalists, especially, do this in MSM articles often.
And then there's 'a coffee' versus 'coffee': 'I'll stop at DD's for a coffee.' vs 'I'll pick up coffee at DD's'. Maybe that's a north/south thing, as growing up in the south I'd never heard the use of 'a coffee' until I started traveling to yankeeland.

Ha. One thing that folks not from the South understand is that certain areas have completely different accents. I grew up in Beaufort SC but graduated from HS in Memphis and went to college in La. My parents are from Arkansas - I heard every accent there was...low and soft like the low country of SC or South Ga to twangy and loud like Texas and Arkansas...or in between like Tennessee or NC - the accents are like our BBQ - different everywhere you went...

Whenever I visited Missouri I was struck by the range of accents. Half the locals sounded heavily Missourian and have sounded like they were from an LA TV station. I know a guy born and raised in Texas, sounds like me, from Oregon.
I think TV is flattening out accents heavily over the years, until we'll all sound like a newscaster. I heard a story once that big news stations sent their people to a school in Seattle to learn to lose their accent.
