New ways to think about nihilism [KT]

un womn.jpg

UN Women

"Can you imagine a world where gender equality is real?

This is what antifa thought they were doing with CHAZ

Utopias always end up as hellscapes in reality

Instagram vs. reality

2 black teenagers were shot to death in CHAZ and the media doesn't even talk about it. "I talked to one of their rescuers. He said the kid who survived got shot in the head and won't have a normal life. Antifa was on edge and shot these two kids up for no reason."

Happy New Year!

This last year has had some unfortunate features. I have been thinking this week about resistance to reality. The word "nihilism" seems to be popping up in my head. Here are some recent, diverse examples. Hope we can stay grounded in reality a little better this year.

A seasonal note: Kwanzaa and the afrocentric hustle. As celebrated by the family of Kamala Harris. According to legend.

Gender and Nihilism

Last week, we mentioned the beginning of the countdown of the most-read pieces in Areo for 2020. Areo is largely a project to defend the remnants of the left which retain some connection to classical liberalism from the insane left. Well, now we know what their most-read piece was.

Have the Women of the UN been paying attention to the efforts to destroy JK Rowling this year?

JK Rowling recently published an eminently reasonable, heartfelt treatise, outlining why it is important to preserve the category of woman. There's only one thing wrong with it: it assumes a rational interlocutor. Rowling outlines why the biological and legal category of sex is important: in sports, in rape crisis shelters, in prisons, in toilets and changing rooms, for lesbians who want to sleep with natal women only and at the level of reality in general. . . At no point does she use exclusionary or hostile language or say that trans women do not exist, have no right to exist or that she wants to rob them of their rights. Her position is that natal women exist and have a right to limit access to their political and personal spaces. Period.

Of course, to assume that her missive would be engaged with in the spirit in which it was intended, is to make the mistake of imagining that the identitarian left is broadly committed to secular, rational discourse. It is not. . .

The Balkanisation of culture into silos of unreason means that the responses have not followed what might be loosely called the pre-digital rules of discourse. These rules assume that the purpose of public debate is to discern truth and that interlocutors on opposing sides--a reductionist bifurcation, because, in fact, there are many sides--engage in argument because they are interested in something higher than themselves: an ideal of truth, no matter how complicated, multifaceted and evolving. While in-group preferences and biases are inevitable, these exist within an overarching deliberative framework. This style of dialogue assumes the validity of a persuasive argument grounded in reason and evidence, even if--as Rowling does--it also utilises experience and feeling. By default, it assumes that civil conflict and opposition are essential devices in the pursuit of truth.

Three decades of postmodernism and ten years of Twitter have destroyed these conventions and, together with them, the shared norms by which we create and sustain social consensus. There is no grounding metanarrative, there are no binding norms of civil discourse in the digital age.

Trans women are women is not an engaged reply. It is a mere arrangement of words, which presupposes a faith that cannot be questioned. To question it, we are told, causes harm--an assertion that transforms discussion into a thought crime. If questioning this orthodoxy is tantamount to abuse, then feminists and other dissenters have been gaslit out of the discussion before they can even enter it. This is especially pernicious because feminists in the west have been fighting patriarchy for several hundred years and we do not intend our cause to be derailed at the eleventh hour by an infinitesimal number of natal males, who have decided that they are women. Now, we are told, trans women are women, but natal females are menstruators. I can't imagine what the suffragists would have made of this patently absurd turn of events.

Hilaria is not hilarious to the New York Times

Of course, you remember the reports about Alec Baldwin's wife inventing a new identity for herself, and Alec going along with the charade.

Well, Steven Hayward wrote a piece singling out the part played by the New York Times in covering for her, and for other elites.

Whatever else might have once been said about liberal bias at the New York Times, at least you could say that they covered the elites. What else can you say about their wedding announcements section, which, as I think David Brooks once joked, reads more like a mergers and acquisitions page, since the couples spotlighted are invariably ivy league uber-overclass climbers.

But now it seems the Times mission is to provide cover for the elites. Their long story about the Hilaria Baldwin scandal a couple days ago reads like a Babylon Bee parody designed to ward off any criticism of lying about one's identity on a grand scale. All these puff pieces about her in Spanish language publications? Hilarious Baldwin now says she didn't see or read any of them. . .

He mentions other elites who have changed their personal stories with the support of the legacy media. " . . . this example raises a deeper question: why do so many liberals feel compelled to embellish or make up stories about themselves?"

This resonated with me.

I suggest there is something about the fundamental nihilism at the heart of modern liberalism--the view that there is no truth, that the "narrative" is the only important thing, that creating your own "reality" is perfectly fine--that compels liberals to lie about themselves. And a newspaper that has employed fabulists as "reporters" (e.g., Jayson Blair, or the recent 12-part podcast series about the ISIS caliphate that turned out to be completely phony) is more than willing to fall into line to defend liberal fakery, when they are not faking it themselves (Janet Cooke, anybody?). Just as liberalism as a political ideology depends on lies ("gender is a social construct" "raising taxes won't affect the economy"), individual liberals apparently can't live contented lives without lying about themselves.

Nihilism and the Treatment of COVID-19

Facebook is suppressing the efforts of numerous doctors to promote, or even think about, early combination therapies for COVID-19, even banning a peer-reviewed position paper.

facebookbns.jpg

The paper expresses the frustration of the 57 authors with the current "state of the art", which is basically to send COVID-positive patients home to wait until they are sick enough to go to the hospital. It notes countries where treatment packets are passed out to the population so they can treat themselves if they are exposed, or if they come down with COVID-19. Some of the numbers in these countries are better than numbers in the USA. Multifaceted highly targeted sequential multidrug treatment of early ambulatory high-risk SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19):

In countries where therapeutic nihilism is prevalent, patients endure escalating symptoms and without early treatment can succumb to delayed in-hospital care and death. Prompt early initiation of sequenced multidrug therapy (SMDT) is a widely and currently available solution to stem the tide of hospitalizations and death. A multipronged therapeutic approach includes 1) adjuvant nutraceuticals, 2) combination intracellular anti-infective therapy, 3) inhaled/oral corticosteroids, 4) antiplatelet agents/anticoagulants, 5) supportive care including supplemental oxygen, monitoring, and telemedicine. Randomized trials of individual, novel oral therapies have not delivered tools for physicians to combat the pandemic in practice. No single therapeutic option thus far has been entirely effective and therefore a combination is required at this time. An urgent immediate pivot from single drug to SMDT regimens should be employed as a critical strategy to deal with the large numbers of acute COVID-19 patients with the aim of reducing the intensity and duration of symptoms and avoiding hospitalization and death.

Well, you can understand why Facebook would want to prevent people getting THAT kind of deadly information.

We've seen some information on emerging early therapies here in previous posts here. I have some thoughts, which I can add later in the comments if anyone is interested. I had an appointment with a specialist this week who seemed actually afraid to learn anything about them. So stuck in the "large RCT trials or nothing" mode. RCTs are underway for some of them, though.

Of course, it is hard to do a randomized, blinded controlled trial when doctors insist on tailoring other treatment options to the needs of individual patients. Increases variables.

34 But seriously, I think one of the not unintentional results of the clampdown, has been a general loss of trust in the medical profession.

Doctors no longer seem to have relationships with their patients, but are technicians, being given direction from above, with little ability to make decisions of their own.

Part of the brainwashing is to claim everything as political, and to wrap one's identity primarily as one's role in the workplace. Secondarily to that, one's identity in the bedroom.

When there is nothing of value to be found beyond those two realms, then sure, everything else is an inconvenience at best, and must be destroyed at worst.

96 Looking closely, we can tell how the UN plans to reach Equiterra by what they show and don't show in the image.

I don't see any Asian, despite their current large population worldwide, but I do see Indians. I'm guessing the Chinese, Koreans and Japanese objected to forced feminization, and were dealt with in a Great War.

This war would explain the incredibly high percentage of Equiterrians in wheelchairs and with prosthetics. Seeing the many children in wheelchairs, I'm guessing the UN lifted the landmine ban due to the importance of the War for Gender Equality.

The large number of LGBTQ couples shows that Muslims have also been repressed as useful idiots that helped in the war and are now to be ignored. This is further supported by the lack of shown polygamous families, showing the ultimate white-Eurocentric colonizing core of the guilty white UN.

I also think we are just getting to peek behind the curtain at how genetics plays a big role in both baseline health and treatment efficacy. But since we have to disavow knowledge of genetic differences between even the sexes, we have limited future medical innovation. Also, as a society we believe that modern medicine is a magic bullet and over estimate just how much we collectively understand about the human body and health.

This! My youngest daughter used to get pains in her shoulders when she was under five. I took her to a pediatrician who couldn't find anything wrong and asked me if she consumes a lot of dairy products. I said yes that she drinks milk all the time. He said that it contained proteins that children could have problems metabolizing and it often manifests itself as crystals in joints. My daughter typically said she could not decrease her consumption and promptly went cold turkey. End of problem.

The doctor was very up front that his diagnosis was guesswork, but it was very educated guesswork and I appreciated his honesty.

My last statement is that the politics of Health Care today is not compatible with patient care. Period. And Pelosi is no friend of theirs. The AOC/Bernie wing of the DNC see Pelosi as the enemy, so she's a valid target.

I think after 7 months of being allowed to roam free, attack, kill, burn down, occupy, and then get off free when arrested (thanks, Soros DAs), they will have a hard time going back to only attacking the Dem-preferred targets every 4 years.

I'm also wondering when BLM will start attacking Biden and Harris and other prominent Democrats. They've been outspoken about how they expected Biden to take a meeting with them after they helped get him elected, and he's snubbed them so far.

However, BLM teaming up with Act Blue and then allowing BLM funds to be dispersed to the Biden campaign should make things interesting. The coming political struggle will be between the Hard Left (Antifa, BLM) that are full on Marxists, and the Center-Left of Pelosi, Biden, etc, that wants to make tyranny gradual.
The Hard Left wants their revolution NOW, while the Center - Left will gradually implement their agenda.

The Republicans, such as they are, will be irrelevant office furniture. They have shown that a Presidential election can be stolen, and ...Hey, no problem! They are really ok with all future elections rigged. They will gradually disappear (in a decade or so). The Democrats will split into a Hard Left Revolutionary Party, and a Center Left (gradualist) Progressive party.

Trust me, you're not given a choice of what you get, just a choice of whether or not you decided to accept what they offer you.

One of the MDs told me that while the antibody therapy does seem to help, it's not nearly as strong as hoped.

Also told me Remdesivir is not "saving lives," it merely reduces the length of time patients have symptoms from ~14 days to ~10 days. Now of course that helps, but it's not a cure.

Sadly, if you created a dartboard with every movie and teevee show that featured children prominently, blindfolded yourself and threw a dart at the board... as long as you land ON the board, there's a tremendously good chance it will land on a show/movie that had child sex abuse happening behind the scenes.

263 Here's the thing with equal representation: what if it isn't what people want? Scandinavia has shown that when economic and social pressures are removed through massive redistribution and generational education/indoctrination, professional differences between the sexes *maximize.* Compare that to, say, Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a poor country with poor education and a lot of patriarchy - and yet Bangladesh has proportionally more female engineers and scientists than Scandinavia.

Why? Not because women - on average - *want* those jobs, but because they need the damn money and those jobs pay well if you can do them.

The more we get rich and stable and remove barriers or even subsidize equal outcomes (what the woke folk now call "equity policy"), the *less* even representation you will get. Because people are different, and so are the sexes.

So how do they plan to get equal representation? I'll take "forced labor dictated by central commission" for $500, Alex.

Comedians lament the fact that the club circuit was dying, and this Covid thing seems to have killed it once and for all.

It was once the case that the comics themselves policed each other, and while gentle joke stealing was considered normal, some took it to the next level, and got famous in SPITE of violating whatever comic code there was.

And now "comedians" are becoming rich and famous, not for their humor, but for their identities, and/or their ability to amass a following on social media that has little to do with being funny.

The institutions are made up of their members and their leaders. When you have a rotten institution - like a college or the government, for example - it is rotten because of its people. There are good academics. There are divisions or disciplines that are good or neutral. Not everyone is a piece of garbage.

But on average, they are. If they weren't, those institutions wouldn't be rotten.

O.K. That's reasonable, but most of the people who are dumping on this post along the lines of "It's not going to go any good. What's the point? What a waste of time." Since they're choosing to go they're making a choice about what's worth their time, and the people who are going seem to be going as a group or having a buddy and are aware of staying out of BLM Plaza and not in DC after dark.

This may be the last opportunity for a peaceful gathering.

Depending on January 20, its either low intensity warfare or being chucked unceremoniously into the lime pits or ovens.

The enemy absolutely hates us. Attending on the 6th is the least we can do considering the alternative.

A lot of individual profs/admins are parts of universities that give them some say in hiring, firing, and policy adoption. They can help China along in many ways, but it remains a choice. If they're politically inclined to do it, they will, as plenty of profs are hard left. Others feel swayed by the romantic notion that these students are coming "for a better life" although China tightly regulates student departures.

++++++++++

It was a surprisingly small number. This is reality; not everyone has the means or ability to do certain things and also have the drive within to do so.

Of course people were more bent out of shape over his identifying the Atheism that goes along with them, and so completely missed how all of them interconnect.
As such, this "modern" nihilism is not modern at all. It is merely a reassertion of the original soul(lessness) of "liberalism", and a sign of its acceleration towards the Last Man.

So what comes after? I would hope prosecutions and safeguards against future problems. If there are some "Yeah we deserve to cheat" riots, so be it and hopefully this time they'll be vanquished. We had many riots this year and we lived through others, it's not ideal but not something we should "desperately fear". Is the fear psychological? If that's the case fixing the problem is the only answer.

But I do know that Rush is a good person who has articulated our feelings for decades. A good man.

There have been weird happenings where groups of people focus on some desired outcome and it happens. Somehow. Almost miraculously. Thousands of radio listeners concentrate and suddenly rain falls in a drought area.

So, I want to try at 3 PM to have a one minute moment where anyone who wants to participate thinks of Rush...imagine any cancer cells in his body dying away and imagine him healthy and strong.

I'm going to believe this year as one of miracles. Every day. 3PM, one moment to Rush's health. Don't listen to him but he's a good man. Pass this on to your other blogs.

Economic collapse is not out of the question, but we are strong enough as a country that we can withstand a lot of incompetence, so decline is more probable. There is no question that we will be found wanting in multiple international crises. Again, Jimmy Carter.

432 I'm reading now that drone laws changed here. A bunch of new laws came down the pipe in the last week. One is that all drones have to broadcast thier location as well as the location of the pilot. This is so that if the authorities don't like what you're doing they can hunt you down. Also establish keep away zones.

Google/Alphabet complained. No, they're not worried your about privacy, perish the thought. Their complaint is that instead of broadcasting the info through low power radio transmissions locally google, instead, wants it all streamed on the internet so they can get their paws on all drone telemetry.

It's interesting how quickly new horizons are brought under the control of our benevolent rulers nowadays. Drones, cryptocurrency, 3Dprinting/rapid prototyping, whatever, they seize it quickly.

438 While I don't wish a period of decline on us, there may be some benefits.

Reduction in asset values will make college endowments, pension funds, and trust funds less wealthy. Pension funds and blue cities and states in general will once again go into budgetary crisis, leading to a need for fiscal restraint. Some colleges will go bankrupt and others will have to tighten their belts. All this means more leftists out of work and less money to fund their causes and their preferred products. Teacher's strikes and other public employee strikes loom in our future.

I have always thought that a certain amount of leftist irrelevance (transgender rights, performance art, body modifications, etc.) is a sign of our affluence. We can afford these ludicrous people as a society because we are so wealthy. When we're not so wealthy and can't support so many of them any more, then they have to get real jobs and actually become productive members of society.

A less wealthy society is less of a magnet for illegal immigration, and now that half of the country has become awakened to the need for a border, it's more likely that the janitor or the meat packer or the mechanic will be an American.

446 Caesar, I don't think severe economic slump will either achieve much, or is worth it in terms of costs to so many.

There are several problems even with the mechanics of slump --> salubrious effects. Fiscal problems with colleges/state & local govts. = just as likely more looting from the rest of the economy (taxes) as it does a "reckoning" of any kind. Few parts of the electorate even seem to connect actions and consequences, they now routinely hobble themselves and acquiesce to absurd waste and looting either through stupidity, ignorance, or mindset.

Not that this is a switch we can decide to pull, or not, obviously.

But the more extreme scenarios are indeed towards the tail end of the probability distribution. The US - though massively, inexcusably hobbled by captured and malevolent "regulation", resulting oligopolistic patterns, and a bloated/pernicious public sector, and irrational wealth-destroying official racism - still has an economy that "wants" to grow.

Stagnation a la the Obama years is far more likely than "collapse".

rhomboid, I agree with everything you wrote. I don't want it. But we need to start thinking about how we can find victories where they come. I do believe there is going to be (in real terms, perhaps not in nominal terms, depending upon how much the Fed prints money) decline in the value of financial assets (not to mention commercial real estate, which is going to crater). That decline will leave holes in the budgets of many institutions, like endowments, public and private pension funds, and insurance companies, that depend on the returns from those piles of financial assets.

470 Caesar, we are so far past what I can understand in terms of finances, fiscal matters, and monetary policy that I am truly wordless and have no idea what to expect. And that area was actually my primary area of study, 1,000 years ago.

The last year would seem to indicate that budget shortfalls will be "addressed" via the keyboard. If the GA GOP buffoons lose, then there'll be literally no limit on federal financial vandalism (and even if they win, "fiscal sanity" has not figured in the GOP's transparently dishonest pitches for years, nor was it any part of Trump's agenda, really).

The lost progress and "victories" to me even outweigh the horrors likely to come. Because unlike ace, I am unable to imagine what "Trumpism without Trump" looks like, in policy, political, and electoral reality.

It's never about equality it's always about special treatment and getting even with "the man". One of Rush's sayings has been a lot of liberalism is getting even with them.

Now a part of it is about getting even with the TERF women that hate the men in favor of transwomen. The old line feminists will learn that the reason they were winning is that old-school men were letting them out of consideration for their sex.

Credibility of an election is dependant on it being transparent.
"They" have done everything they can to make the process as opaque as possible in the questioned states.

The election is invalid because of 'them', and they hold the blame.

Convicting someone of fraud is the follow on process. That no one has been convicted (yet) does not mean that fraud never occurred or that the election is 'valid until proven otherwise'.

Kicking out observers before final results alone is enough to invalidate that precinct or state. Refusing audit of vote machine because 'proprietary' is enough to invalidate.

480 Caesar this is one we won't have long to wait for.

The process lawlessness of nation-wide injunctions by district courts has been an obvious problem for years, yet SCOTUS has done/said nothing about it (one lonely Thomas gripe in one ruling is it).

The key asymmetry here is the clear willingness of authoritarian judges to act lawlessly, while the others generally won't, and don't.

Heller remains toilet paper in most of the country. SCOTUS has done/said nothing about it. Just one example. SCOTUS is a legislature, not a court. I don't expect the tiniest bit of symmetry in conducting lawfare here.

In spirit, sure. But the DoI was passed by the Continental Congress to explain the war we'd been fighting for a year against the British. The Constitution was the second attempt to design a lasting government post British (and I think the name and structure of the organization that passed it changed in the interim).
If you meant the second amendment, then yes.

485 "The unsaid text of the latter month's blast of peace treaties is a realignment of the Mideast to contain Iran on their own in the face of US/EU indifference or opposition."

The insane US policy under Obama greatly accelerated the shift, which has been there since the late 70s, when Egypt essentially ended the "military option" with Israel. Trump helped finalize/sweeten/grease various kinds of rapprochement that were already under way - including by resuming rational policy towards Iran, with gusto.

The EU has always been actively hostile to Israel, and anxious to make a single $ from Iran, regardless of consequences.

486 In just the last 2 years 2 federal elections have been tossed due to process problems, a House race in NC and a House primary in NY state (this past summer). In neither case did the party contesting the outcome have to "prove" their case, as in demonstrate in detail that they actually won by 1,245, instead of losing by 879, or something.

Not how it works.

As Burnt Toast said, merely the violation of basic integrity laws (ejecting/blocking observers at counting centers) is enough to void an election. At least 4 of the states in question (PA MI NV GA) had obvious, undisputed violations of these kinds of laws and rules.

Posted by: Braenyard at January 02, 2021 04:16 PM (CZm2G)

488 and I think the name and structure of the organization that passed it changed in the interim

The Constitution was passed by a convention called to amend the Articles of Confederation. The convention had no mandate to write a new Constitution, and the terms of the Constitution called for it to be ratified by conventions of the people in at least 9 of the 13 states, bypassing the state legislatures. The Constitution was enacted by "We the People" completely outside the existing government, both at the federal and state level.

Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at January 02, 2021 04:18 PM (BMmaB)

491 Caesar, exactly, the suits in those states are indeed specific to counties, which are the unit of account for actual election process (I mean apart from the comically unconstitutional state-wide things like PA "over-ruling" its legislature to force process changes). Been a while since I read the suits and exhibits, but they are packed full of specifics about county-level violations.

Sure, but that is old news. The EU is a dead force militarily and increasingly so economically. Post Brexit their chickens will soon be coming home to roost without the UKs relatively strong economy there to loot. Their leaders are the best kind of fools, with no common sense or sense of history, fodder from what passes to the best schools. There were thousands of better ways to handle the Brexit crisis than how they did so, and now they are going to try to create a repressive state without an army

Yeah, the glaring problem with this plan is you need a majority in both chambers to vote for bringing light to the election processes because they care what actual voters think. Which is the same problem with peaceful protests going forward: now that they have a reliable mechanism for stealing elections at any level, they don't need to care what voters think.

508 Getting people on the record with votes is always desirable, in this case as well, however unlikely an actual result-changing vote is.

I have no hope for things actually improving in a way that matters much, but a vote on this might be fodder for a future primary problem for some GOP. Might. Unlikely. We wouldn't be where we are if GOP voters were much more serious or informed than the Dems.
