20 I've seen this one before.

I have a book by William Henry Johnson from 1900, The World's Discoverers: The Story of Bold Voyages by Brave Navigators, which has a chapter on Hudson, as well as chapters on Columbus, Magellan, Da Gama and so on.

Obviously very non-PC, but if you have a boy of a certain age and you want him to learn what men were like in the days of sail, it's a book he should read.

30 Henry Hudson, the great navigator, made his last voyage to the Polar Seas in 1610. In the summer of 1611 his crew mutinied and set him adrift in an open boat with his son, John Hudson, and some of the most infirm of the sailors. They were never heard of more.

55 A brilliantly executed but stark and sad painting. Collier really captured the despair with the somber color scheme or browns and grays instead of brighter blues and whites for water and ice. The fear of the boy, the resignation of the sailor and the anguish of Hudson, realizing he's led his crew to a freezing death, are so clear.

I wouldn't want to hang this in the house but it is so effective.

Apparently that story is considered a bit unreliable. The supposed ringleaders were known as being loyal crewmen to Hudson and they didn't survive the return. So it's possible that the survivors came up with that story to put most of the blame on the dead men in an effort to save their own necks.

at the appropriate moments. Months and months of this pushed these men sore past their limits.

Work is slow this morning (hope it stays that way). I'm supposed to be on 1-9 tomorrow, but I think I might be able to clock out around 7 or so. Then to bed for a nice weekend of sleep.

Hope 2021 is a wonderful year for you. I hope we can meet up again at the NoVaMoMe, if there is one.

222 There's a teeny bit of artistic license in that
painting - Hudson's son was 19 or 20, not the pre-teen boy depicted in
the painting. Still, what an awful story.
Posted by: dabhidh at December 30, 2020 10:18 AM (pO3ga)

I've often thought how one reacts to stories like this is a window into who they are. Was Hudson betrayed - or was Hudson bound and determined to lead his crew to their deaths ? We'll never truly know. But even watching what assumptions and incomplete details are instantly grasped as truths and by whom tells you something about individuals and groups. I've found that how I react to those things tells me valuable shit, in turn, about myself.

One med guy couldn't shut up during an interview this morning about how 2021 would be so awesome, as our progressive medical system "reached out to provide access to health care".

I look for some kind of insurance driven social credit score to grow, as they try to nudge us into being a healthier, more compliant - and most importantly cheaper and more productive - servant class. All under the guise of "battling the lingering effects of covid". Watch.

So, for younger audiences, Nolan may have miscalculated the cultural context outside of Britain - they don't teach kids about Dunkirk these days. If it's not Pearl Harbor, the Holocaust, or the atomic bombings, they don't really cover much about WWII anymore.

I went through a pretty good ice storm a few years ago. Couldn't get out of my house in the sticks for four days. No electricity for seven. My little town wasn't back "open" - with things to sell - for ten.
I thought some people were going to die. They didn't have food, because they don't shop more than a few days at a time. They didn't have generators. They didn't have the good sense, when the power went out, to get moving. I started grilling, running limited electric heat, shutting down parts of the house, and putting perishables outside in coolers. They looked at me like I was mad. Then, in about three days, they started getting hungry and really cold.
You're not wrong. A bunch of people are too stupid to live.

Luke Letlow was a first time elected congressman from Louisiana who was to be sworn in on Sunday. He tested positive for Covid on Dec. 18 , was hospitalized on the 19th, and was transferred to LSU's hospital system on the 23rd. He was receiving remdesivir and steroids and his physicians said he had no underlying conditions prior to contracting Covid. He suffered a cardiac event yesterday that did not respond to resuscitation. My guess is he ended up with a pulmonary embolism that traveled to one of his cardiac vessels.
I know it's popular here to believe that Covid doesn't actually kill people , but it can and does. It's the severe inflammation some people experience from a hyper immune reaction to the virus.

425 Covid related questions for the Horde

1) a lot of states are showing really high populations in the hospitals reportedly for COVID, what do we think is really driving this? Are A) a lot more people getting really sick with this virus and need to be hospitalized? or B) Are hospitals testing everyone for COVID and anyone that shows up on PCR or an Antigen gets called a COVID patient, and are they keeping those patients longer in order to keep raking in that sweet sweet COVID treatment governement cash?

2) Also related- COVID death stats. My state, North Carolina was reporting about 20-30 deaths per day for months. Now they are reporting somewhere a little north of 40/day - At the same time that this shifted their counting metrics also changed. For most of the year someone was counted as a COVID death if they had a positive PCR result (with out any cycle threshold or Ct data). This fall they added a positive antigen test to the COVID death classification - and Voila - the average daily death count went up about 10/day. Anyone in healthcare have thoughts on this? Aren't antigen tests a way of identifying not just who has contracted the virus but also who had it and got better?

Because they seized on the covid epidemic to make political points and to disrupt the normal americans lives so that they could be warped into what you currently are witnessing.

Yes, he died according to his doctors of a cardiac event with no prior history of cardiac issues. He was being aggressively treated in hospital for Covid. But we should automatically assume it had nothing to do with his "heart attack" because of the politicization of Covid. That is just as dumb as believing it is going to kill everyone who contracts it.

I always figured that if people had to pay cash for all of their medical bills, it would be the kind of direct incentive for healthier behavior. No more, "Well, my insurance will cover it."

450 For all the people deathly afraid of covid, I sure still see a lot of people who "ain't no ways" in any semblance of healthy shape. For crying out loud, when I had a groin hernia that made me pay attention to the littlest torso motion, I still ate healthy. Now that I can walk from hither to thither without pain, I'm lifting dumbbells and walking from hither to thither. But we still allow people to make and keep themselves obese, smokers, heavy drinkers, whatever else, and then we get ridiculous restrictions that would be unnecessary if we didn't have all this low-hanging fruit to, oh, wait, still, the restrictions are stupid.

457 Well, I'm not a douche, ( I've never understood the meaning of that term used as an adjective) but my response in this case was because the poster claimed the 41 year old congressman died from a heart attack.

It's not the evidence you supplied to your comment, it was the preface.

I know it's popular here to believe that Covid
doesn't actually kill people , but it can and does.

Posted by: Endeavor To Persevere at December 30, 2020 10:57 AM (FHY7H)

All we had at the time. Nukes were the humane option. If you take an objective look at what Operation Olympic and its aftermath would have entailed, the predicted death-toll among the Japanese is horrifying. U.S. planned on 100s of thousand American casualties and the Japanese military had absolutely no intention of surrendering (despite was the revisionists say).

461 "You're right. We should have invading Japan itself leading to months, maybe even years of fighting from town to town as the diehard Japanese soldiers would refuse to give up any block of any city, just like they dug into every patch of dirt above water in the Pacific. That would have been more humane."
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, marching in the Felliniesque circus at December 30, 2020 10:55 AM (NWM+b

And Halsey's prophecy on returning to Pearl Harbor would have been fulfilled. Japanese would only be spoken in hell, because all of the Japanese would have been killed. Or converted into Russian speaking New Soviet Men.

Watch. It's going to be nudged by your insurance provider. Too heavy ? Pay extra. Smoke or drink ? Pay extra. Gym membership ? Pay less. Sounds great, right ?
Own guns ? Pay extra. Contribute to third party candidates ? Pay extra. Own a motor boat, RV, pickup, or vacation home ? Pay extra. Do approved public service ? Pay less. All defined as healthy behaviors. Still sound great ?

The fire bombing raids of other Japanese cites had similar or even greater casualties than the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So it's not like killing large numbers of Japanese civilians wasn't already happening.

Minor quibble: US Military planners may have mentioned 100 of thousands, but, privately, they talked of a million or more.

I read an article, years ago, by a guy who had survived Normandy, was deemed 40% combat capable, yet, was expected to participate in the invasion of Japan. He said he cried tears of relief, when Japan surrendered.

Roughly 2.1 million people have been vaccinated so far, per CDC.

470 The biggest reason for trying to get the Japanese to surrender soon is that Russia was about to enter the war on that side of the world and they would've done exactly what they did in Germany. The Japanese also knew this and once convinced by the Bombs they surrendered to the US.

I hate when people look back in time and say this or that should've been done. As if we knew then what we know now.

It's lunkheads trying to look smart.

Also... since it was documented that he was being treated with Remdisivir and Steroids - anyone from the medical community want to weigh in the potential risks/severity of the documented cardiac side effects of both. My point - was it the Wuhan Virus that caused the man's acute cardiac event or the aggressiveness of the treatment for the Wuhan Virus?
