Less than perfect technique (his later stuff is amazing), but I agree...more human looking.

17 Hits home. This is me on my knees every waking hour.

Hail Mary, full of Grace.
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.

Holy Mary mother of God
Pray for us sinners now
And at the hour of our death.
Amen

Oh please save this beautiful country from the ravages of the devil.

Hail, Holy Queen!
Our light, our sweetness, our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.

And after this our exile,
Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

I think it's a mixture. The effect it has on you is entirely subjective, but I think there also exist objective aspects - quality, composition, etc. to art. Of course, some people are total snobs or hypersensitive assholes about it, but that's a subset of the arts subculture.

Well, speaking as a member of the RCC, a (very) loose explanation is that, as man is such a sinful creature, it's easier to approach a saint or even the Virgin to ask for a favor or help than it is to approach J.C. Himself.

201 What a wonderful image for Christmas Eve. David, as usual, made use of brilliant color where appropriate, dramatic poses, and lighting. Each face is an individual. The way the Virgin and child are in the light while all others are in darker areas is effective and starting in the upper corner draws the eye down to the plague areas that take up much of the canvas.

Thanks, CBD, and Merry Christmas to all my Horde friends.

There are certain things that have to happen during your life, and be confirmed that they did happen, in order to be canonized. Anyone who died before the nativity can't be officially recognized as a Saint, because those things couldn't possibly have happened. So all the OT figures are out.

But they can certainly be celebrated and venerated.

Yeah, a saint refers to anyone in Heaven. Catholics would typically refer to the pre-Christian types as the Patriarchs though.

Generally this should be thought of as similar to asking people on Earth to pray for you. Conceptually the Host militant(living on Earth) and Host Triumphant(living in Heaven) are held to be one large community.

Short answer: no, because he (like Jeremiah, Isaiah or other prophets) did not belong to the Church. He is not a "canonized" saint, as are Teresa, Patrick and others.

He is a saint with God, however, which is all that counts.

It was a substantial period of time before the formal canonization process was established and many people had been loosely added to the rolls. I think theologically all the Patriarchs would be considered saints.

257 Protestants often seem to misunderstand about praying to Saints. I am a Protestant, but I think I do understand: The term "praying to" is used, but it's more like asking their intercession, in other words, you're asking a very holy person who is close to God and has been canonized is putting a good word in for you. Of course, Roman Catholics can pray directly to God and Christ-and do.

And Mary is not just "another woman" as is clear from the Bible; She's highly favored and is visited by an angel.

335 The Black Death hit England so hard that it completely reshaped society there. They pulled out of the wars on the Continent, had a peasant revolt, and began phasing out serfdom, and it drastically diminished the power of the Church. In many ways, it made it into a much more modern country, and paved the way for the rise of England as a major European power. It would take other countries much longer to catch on to these reforms.

Not Catholic, myself, so Mary and the Saints are all just folks to me. That said...

We have a statue of St Francis on our front porch, inherited from Milady's late, sainted mother. Francis of the birds, bunnies, lepers, and famous prayer.

Sometimes as it gets dark, if one or more of the cats isn't in yet, I'll touch St Francis's bowl and ask that the cats be safe. More frequently than not, hardly have I put in my request than the cat will be right there at my feet.

Wish I could get swift service like that in other matters. Thinking we need a statue of St Jude, or St Dymphna.

And Mary is not just "another woman" as is clear from the Bible; She's highly favored and is visited by an angel.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 24, 2020 10:26 AM (WkPC9)

Protestants would argue that the Bible says all believers have access to God's throne room through Christ, who is the only mediator between God and man and that we see no scriptural precedent for praying to people who have passed on.

Anyway, still love all my brothers and sisters in Christ, and even you heathens.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

404 "Fear not Mary, for thou hast found favor with God."

"John 19:25-27"

"Luke 1:28"

Mary wasn't just any ordinary woman. She was visited by the angel Gabriel at the direction of God himself. Munificentissimus deus by Pope Prius XII also aptly lays out the assumption.

It's also a gross misunderstanding that CATHOLICS worship Mary.

right ... idk legalities, but Powell is a different set of cases. It does seem Trump could use a special counsel that would override the obstruction from the FBI/CIA and other entrenched powers that be. I've heard that Rudy (or his team?) cannot be that person, since he is Trump's personal lawyer.

But Trump's WH bureaucrat lawyers just want to further their career and have (allegedly) been telling Trump's people to "get Trump to stand down". Surely Trump can find replacements that are patriotic enough to not let election theft happen in broad daylight.
