Well, speaking as a member of the RCC, a (very) loose explanation is that, as man is such a sinful creature, it's easier to approach a saint or even the Virgin to ask for a favor or help than it is to approach J.C. Himself. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at December 24, 2020 09:59 AM (2JVJo) 123

What a wonderful image for Christmas Eve. David, as usual, made use of brilliant color where appropriate, dramatic poses, and lighting. Each face is an individual. The way the Virgin and child are in the light while all others are in darker areas is effective and starting in the upper corner draws the eye down to the plague areas that take up much of the canvas.

Catholics would typically refer to the pre-Christian types as the Patriarchs though. Generally this should be thought of as similar to asking people on Earth to pray for you. Conceptually the Host militant(living on Earth) and Host Triumphant(living in Heaven) are held to be one large community. Posted by: t-bird at December 24, 2020 10:12 AM (dYmWY) Short answer: no, because he (like Jeremiah, Isaiah or other prophets) did not belong to the Church. He is not a "canonized" saint, as are Teresa, Patrick and others. He is a saint with God, however, which is all that counts. Protestants often seem to misunderstand about praying to Saints. I am a Protestant, but I think I do understand: The term "praying to" is used, but it's more like asking their intercession, in other words, you're asking a very holy person who is close to God and has been canonized is putting a good word in for you. Of course, Roman Catholics can pray directly to God and Christ-and do.

We don't pray to Mary and we don't worship her; we ask her to intercede with her Son for us. Kinda like asking Mom to put in a good word with dad.
Some of her devotees are quite...exuberant...but she's humanity's mom, in a way. She's directing her Son's attention to the petitioner here. Posted by: Dr. Vivi at December 24, 2020 10:33 AM (USW1s) Posted by: Mr. Meeseeks, Look at me at December 24, 2020 10:33 AM (2DOZq) 297

The Black Death hit England so hard that it completely reshaped society there. They pulled out of the wars on the Continent, had a peasant revolt, and began phasing out serfdom, and it drastically diminished the power of the Church. In many ways, it made it into a much more modern country, and paved the way for the rise of England as a major European power. It would take other countries much longer to catch on to these reforms.

Not Catholic, myself, so Mary and the Saints are all just folks to me. That said... We have a statue of St Francis on our front porch, inherited from Milady's late, sainted mother. Francis of the birds, bunnies, lepers, and famous prayer. Sometimes as it gets dark, if one or more of the cats isn't in yet, I'll touch St Francis's bowl and ask that the cats be safe. More frequently than not, hardly have I put in my request than the cat will be right there at my feet. Wish I could get swift service like that in other matters. Thinking we need a statue of St Jude, or St Dymphna.

Andrew Yang running for mayor of NYC?
Wow, so the choice will be Left or Lefter? Posted by: blaster at December 24, 2020 10:55 AM (ZfRYq) I thought he was moving to Georgia to vote? Although for Democrats why bother? Rotten Republican candidates, Ratshitberger and Dominion will take care of those elections. Posted by: TheQuietMan at December 24, 2020 10:58 AM (6ooku) 391
Evacuation orders were in effect at Camp Pendleton in California early Thursday as a wildfire in the area dubbed the Creek Fire grew to cover some 300 acres, according to a report.

Jenna make a necessary legal statement because third parties were misrepresenting facts.
Posted by: Cat Man D-12 What facts exactly were misrepresented? Do you have some particular knowledge? Because two very smart, very successful people have walked out of meetings with Trump recently and said that he is surrounded by snakes. You make my point for me. Jenna will allow America to invaded by Communists while insuring that we are all wearing our seatbelts and obeying all traffic signals. At least we checked all the legal boxes. And Mary is not just "another woman" as is clear from the Bible; She's highly favored and is visited by an angel. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 24, 2020 10:26 AM (WkPC9) Protestants would argue that the Bible says all believers have access to God's throne room through Christ, who is the only mediator between God and man and that we see no scriptural precedent for praying to people who have passed on. Anyway, still love all my brothers and sisters in Christ, and even you heathens. Merry Christmas, everyone!

"Fear not Mary, for thou hast found favor with God."
"John 19:25-27" "Luke 1:28" Mary wasn't just any ordinary woman. She was visited by the angel Gabriel at the direction of God himself. Munificentissimus deus by Pope Prius XII also aptly lays out the assumption. It's also a gross misunderstanding that CATHOLICS worship Mary. "The most recent association she's tweeted is a picture of her with Powell and Giuliani.
Jenna make a necessary legal statement because third parties were misrepresenting facts." Posted by: Cat Man D-12 right ... idk legalities, but Powell is a different set of cases. It does seem Trump could use a special counsel that would override the obstruction from the FBI/CIA and other entrenched powers that be. I've heard that Rudy (or his team?) cannot be that person, since he is Trump's personal lawyer. But Trump's WH bureaucrat lawyers just want to further their career and have (allegedly) been telling Trump's people to "get Trump to stand down". Surely Trump can find replacements that are patriotic enough to not let election theft happen in broad daylight. Posted by: illiniwek at December 24, 2020 11:04 AM (Cus5s) 422

Not here to get into theological debates I was just trying to explain what the concept of the intercession of Saints involves.
