77 "By age 35 you should have at least one fork in your cutlery drawer that you just don't like, and actively frown at if you accidentally grab it."

What about at age 35 (and beyond) having a fork in your cutlery drawer you positively like, that you seek out for certain jobs?

I have a mess setting from my Dad's now long retired Navy ship. (I don't think she's even in mothballs anymore and was probably sold for scrap many moons ago.) The fork and tines are quite sturdy and is perfect for forking a potato before baking along with heavy fork mixing duties, pancake batter for example, as well as fork lifting duties like getting a piece of meat out of the egg wash and into the breading.

Question for the horde.

Mrs. K requires cataract surgery for both eyes. The doctor has provided her with two choices for the lens replacements. One is a simple lens for which she'd likely need some type of eyeglasses afterward (likely for closeup reading). The other is a "trifocal" lens for which a continued need for corrective lenses would be less likely, with a side effect of possible light halos during night driving.

Has anyone here anything to recommend regarding these choices? Myself, I am leery of the "no corrective lenses required afterward" promise for the trifocal option.

Well one day, she was visiting a country estate and remarked the the silver ware looked familiar. The host replied that it was yay-hundred years old and exclusively crested to his family. But the Princess insisted ...

A few weeks later a package arrived at the estate ... a spoon from the yay-hundred year old set that had been in Windsor castle, possibly taken there during the Regency when the Prince had been offered something while visiting the estate and had been eating it on the carriage ride home ...

I would rather have a single correction, then use readers (which most of us use now anyway).

If I had it to do over again, I would go for the more expensive multi-focal lenses. My distance vision is fantastic, but now I can not read the labels on a can of soup without strain, even with post-cataract prescription glasses.

Got the plain ones. I've worn glasses most my life, and the "pitch" of the do-all, end-all" didn't appeal to me much.
Interestingly, I bought a drone, with the mega-death camera, and then bought the goggles.
With my bifocals, I couldn't see squat with those goggles.
The solution was $7 reading glasses from the local mini-mart.
With the megadeath do all lenses, turns out there would have been no solution.

My co-worker, who absolutely loves dogs, had a border collie when his kids were much younger. The collie loved to nip at their heels and herd them as well. Caused no end of grief for any guests they had over.

One day, when a dog walker took the collie out for its walk, he broke away from the pack and got run over by a car, killing it.

When my co-worker's wife ended up giving him the bad news, he told me that while he was broken up over the death, a part of him was quite relieved at the same time.

He ended up getting another dog, but made it a point to match the breed to his family's living habits first.

225 Mrs.

We have a wrinkle in doggie daycare around here (county just outside DC with a suburban and rural divide) where people who work 12+ a day and commute 2-3 hrs also get dogs who need something to do, activity, companionship, more purpose than living in a crate and waiting for that hour or two of quality time a day.

There are people here with hobby sheep who make bank selling herding time to suburbanites with border collies, and give classes on it, so the dogs don't completely lose their minds being cooped up while fed worker mom and dad are on the road or in the office.

I don't see the problem with jelly jar glasses. I still have a glass mug with a handle that I bought at the grocery store because it came with brown horseradish mustard. Heck, I remember when Shell gas stations were giving out blue cocktail glasses with football logos on them, along with other blue glassware (I still have some of the stemmed single serving pudding bowls). I also remember DUZ detergent having place setting pieces and other items in their boxes. People pay good money for that stuff now.

That's really sad. Unfortunately herding dogs get hit by cars, lots of dogs do. At our lake place the neighbors tell me let my dogs off the leash, what could happen, and my answer is hit by car. There aren't many cars but it only takes one. They get off leash there if we're actively engaged with them, playing frisbee or fetch. At home they live off leash.
Posted by: Evasiveboat42 at December 18, 2020 11:15 PM (Rz2Nc)

Few weeks ago my wife got back from a walk/frisbee session with our pup. She took the leash off just before she opened the gate to go in our side yard. Clover, for some reason, frisbee still in mouth, decided to dash into the street, in front of a car. Wife didn't know if she was going for the car, or something else on the other side of the street. The car drove over her but, miraculously, she came out on the other side unhurt. The frisbee wasn't so lucky; got gouged up when it got stuck under the skidding front wheel. I was out of town, and my wife called me, in a frantic state... she was about to have a nervous breakdown. Now we keep Clover on leash whenever we're near the street... which is a bummer 'cause I liked to walk her off-leash. But I couldn't face my wife if something were to happen to the pup under my watch.

Ahhhhh. Foook me.

Smash has at least seven different knives for cooking. One for meat, one for veg (but not 'maters), one for shaving corn off the cobb, a really slender long one for the 'maters. No fucking clue what the other three are for. She uses all of them. They're reasonable quality steele, Hinkles, i think. They are hard steele, difficult to put an edge on, but whoa nellie when i get it right.

Over the years, 38 next Oct., she's had the same knives. I've always been ok with small knives, but i've learned how to sharpen these particular knives to where they are scary sharp.

As in, be right careful how i wash them sharp. I've cut myself to the bone multiple times washing them after sharpening them without feeling it.

Smash is, particular, about her cooking knives.

I'm just happy to put them into the co dition she likes to cook with, as i am a fat bastard from her her good cooking.

Rambling.

Yes, favorite knife.

About seven inches in length, filet a two inch thick piece of battleship armor. Good for 'maters, and any sumbitct stupid enough to diss Smash's cooming.

Car stopped for the German shepherd to let him cross but didn't see the miniature schnauzer and the poor little rat got beaned.

He wasn't hurt. Scratched up but mostly just shook up. From that day on whenever you walked him and a car came down the street he would hop up onto the sidewalk or grass and wait for it to pass.

392 Malls seem to have an interesting future.

I've noticed they seem to be going in two directions, what I'd call 'utility malls' and 'destination malls.'

My nearest mall is, for better or worse, turning into a utility mall. Its most popular stores are Target and Costco. In other words, it's made up mostly of stores you'd go to for necessities. There are a few nice touches of course-- it has a California Pizza Kitchen and an H&M, among a few other higher-end retailers-- but those aren't major draws.

Then in the town directly east of me, Cerritos, their mall is what I'd call a destination mall. They have a lot more high-end retailers including Nordstrom, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Banana Republic, and a very well-appointed movie theater.

I'm just shopping the goggles these days. Meanwhile, a Night Vision Scope on the rifle serves as a poor man's substitute.

Meanwhile, the 24-5/8" barrel on the CZ-452 Lux, coupled with subsonic ammo.. No expensive can, no Federal Anal Exam, and no $200 stamp to make it all work.

It's quiet enough to hear the firing pin striker hit the brass case. Pings the 10" steel 10/10 at 100 yards, too.

Fieldcraft/Woodcraft though?

I've became rather skilled at that, over the years.

If they send a Company of Daniel Boon Hillbillies, I'm in trouble. (we all are, then, too.)

More likely they'll send a platoon of Antifa.

411 Well, I have about worked myself out of a job, insofar as sheetrocking goes. One sheet of 5/8" left, and zero 1/2". The corner of the garage where the workbench lives is all insulated and boarded; even have some mud on it.

Now I need to spec out how many more sheets I need to finish off the garage, and to board the walls and ceiling in the "great room". Will need a mess of 2X4's, too. Idea is to get all the bulky stuff in one go, since I will have to rent or borrow a vehicle to haul it all.

I'm taking three rifles to the range on Sunday. 6.5x55, 6.5 Creedmore, and 5.56.

Ruger Hawkeye M-77 African, Thompson-Center Compass and Rock-River AR-15 w/ Lothar-Walther 18" stainless 1:8 bbl & .223 Wylde chamber.

I think I've got things narrowed down to the right loads, for some truly Sub-MOA results, with each.

When I get 'em dialed in, I'll stop expending ammo with each of them.

I'm blessed with one particular blessing for which I am VERY thankful. I don't find my shooting skills to be perishable, in the slightest.

From '99 to '04, I never fired off so much as a single round.

Ended up with a 3rd place finish in an '04 IDPA match, in Stock Service Revolver class.

My first experience with IDPA, ever.

And I can sit behind a rifle and shoot cloverleafs, if all else is agreeable.

What PRACTICE does for me though?

Improves my TIMES. Reduces my FUMBLES. Calms my MIND.

Practice IS VALUABLE.

And I'm thankful that I get to practice the times, fumbles and mental drills, vs. the basics of tiny groupage.

Get into the new house, do all the shit needed to sell this one, then sell this one, then have the new place sided and roofed, because it needs it, but I got it for 50K less because of that, and my brother's guys will take care of that. Then spend a few months working on the inside to loose that miserable 80's decor, and somewhere in all that get the new outbuilding done and set up for the harley thing, then build my epic guitar room in the basement and lock myself in it for a month after dealing with a year of serious suck. Other than that, no plans.

Awwww. The Heritage speakers are about the most naturally "voiced" projectors I've ever heard for a sub $1k price.

They cover the entire range, instrument or voice, and are very forgiving as to placement, reflectivity or background.

There *are* better speakers. Lots of 'em. Mostly, for more money, or requiring more precise placement, reflectivity or background.

Bang for the buck.

Gimme the Heritage, every time.

p.s. they have no problem with a 120 wpc amp pushing 'em to about 80%, retaining "accuracy".

hard to ask much more of a speaker, than that.

Don't know if you're still around, Evasive... I had to step away to finish a report.

Anyway, funny story 'bout naming our dog...

Got her @ 8 weeks old as a surprise Mother's Day gift for Average Wife. Went back & forth with AW & the Average Kids about what to name her. Unfortunately my suggestion - Gertrude - was rejected. So somehow we came to a consensus on Clover. Shortly thereafter we realized we didn't know what her birthday was, and thought it would be nice to know (all our other dogs came from rescues and shelters, so we never knew their birthdays). I asked the guy I got her from (a backyard breeder) and he told me: March 17th... St. Patrick's Day!

Cerwin Vega speakers were designed around the idea of an exaggerated base note for hard rock and the early onset of heavy metal.

Give 'em this though. They could handle the heavy power of late '70s Silver Face ultra high powered amps and receivers of the time.

Bose could, too.

But only if you placed them in a room designed IDENTICALLY to the Bose Test Studio "acoustic space" labs.

One of the worst sounding speakers ever, is a Bose 901, played in the open at a family picnic.

Just. NO.

Same speaker in a 16'x20' room, from the long corners, with a simple drapery covering the wall behind them?

Sublime.

But ONLY in such a setting.

And your choice of tile or hardwood or carpeted floor? Would decide everything.

I *respect* Bose, their labs and their end products.

But not their marketing, retail suggestions or thoughts as to usage, placement or such.

Even their vaunted Wave Radio is a bitch as to where sited.

Act, accordingly.

514 Millions of Chinese residents have been left without heating in the middle of winter as cities ration electricity amid a blockade on Australian coal.

Chinese coal prices were 500 yuan ($100) last month but increased 760 yuan ($153) per tonne on Wednesday, which has now resulted in restrictions on power use for millions of residents, according to South China Morning Post.

Some 57 million people live in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, on China's east coast, and have been besieged by power shortages resulting in electricity being shut off.

The Zhejiang provincial government has now ordered offices to only use heating when the temperature drops below 3C (37.4 Farenheit), also seen is an online notice to a middle school in Zhejiang, banning staff and students from turning on heating if temperatures exceeded 3 degrees.

According to China's state-owned broadcaster CCTV, lights and lifts in some office buildings were shut off in a several cities across Hunan and Zhejiang. The power outages forced some office workers in Hunan's city of Changsha to climb 20 to 30 flights of stairs, according to a report in the local news publication iFeng.

China's central government claims there are no power shortages.

It keeps me from chasing reading glasses constantly. Mrs just does reading glasses, but her original eye prescription wasn't much, so she doesn't reach for readers as much as I. Probably all 3 of those reasons, Gilded.
Honey might work...it's a similar consistency. I will look into that, thanks!

526 As to astigmatism, they can correct that in the new lenses for a mere $1000 extra (total extra cost, not per eye).

Posted by: Jimmy Doolittle at December 19, 2020 03:46 AM (U8Hxf)

Are you talking about something like lasik as eyeglass relacement? Or something pertaining specifically to cataracts?
Yes, specifically to cataract surgery. We paid the surgeon an extra $1000 to get astigmatism corrected. It is a slight procedure tweak, probably a slightly different lens too.
An eye doc friend says they twist the lens orientation during surgery using a scope and techy equipment.

OK, here's a first world problem -- My dad had a custom gun cabinet built. It has an ammo drawer.

I can't open it, cuz jammed too full of ammo.

Fuckity.

572 Good morning. My youngest daughter graduates today. It's been a rough 5 years getting to this point. She's worked really hard for it, but of course there will be no real ceremony, because of china flu. Instead it will be virtual and that is sad and depressing. But at least she's done with he BA, and now I have to spend the rest of my life reprogramming her.

Yeah, not a fan of the corn syrup. Apparently it can make a difference if used in a recipe with higher temps or in candy making, but this is a cookie so not sure it would matter

Posted by: Skip at December 19, 2020 05:32 AM (Cxk7w)

Nope. I'm basically fucked. I do have a (very labor intensive ) plan to tilt the whole cabinet on its side, after emptying the top portion, to see if I can get the the ammo to 'settle'.

Otherwise, the tire iron option comes into play.

596 Congratulations Spypeach. Girl Franpsycho graduated in June. UC conveniently provided a tape of the chancellor giving a little speech and mock diploma ceremony. We played it on the big screen in the living room, she moved the tassel on her mortarboard and then we had bagels. Kind of a sad simulacrum of a graduation but none of us were looking forward to sweltering for hours at a long boring event on campus.

Good question. I don't know.

Picture a crowded corner, with the cabinet at the center of the corner. A shitton of stuff has to be moved/unloaded before I can even move this monster.

Pretty woodwork, and I'll damage it if I have to.

I hope there was that discussion, but most likely not as it would be breaking news this morning about how Trump was mean to him, and how nobody should be treated that way. Well, unless you're Trump that is.
