"By age 35 you should have at least one fork in your cutlery drawer that you just don't like, and actively frown at if you accidentally grab it."
What about at age 35 (and beyond) having a fork in your cutlery drawer you positively like, that you seek out for certain jobs? I have a mess setting from my Dad's now long retired Navy ship. (I don't think she's even in mothballs anymore and was probably sold for scrap many moons ago.) The fork and tines are quite sturdy and is perfect for forking a potato before baking along with heavy fork mixing duties, pancake batter for example, as well as fork lifting duties like getting a piece of meat out of the egg wash and into the breading. Question for the horde. Mrs. K requires cataract surgery for both eyes. The doctor has provided her with two choices for the lens replacements. One is a simple lens for which she'd likely need some type of eyeglasses afterward (likely for closeup reading). The other is a "trifocal" lens for which a continued need for corrective lenses would be less likely, with a side effect of possible light halos during night driving. Has anyone here anything to recommend regarding these choices? Myself, I am leery of the "no corrective lenses required afterward" promise for the trifocal option. Posted by: barbarausa at December 18, 2020 10:47 PM (W7IZQ) My co-worker, who absolutely loves dogs, had a border collie when his kids were much younger. The collie loved to nip at their heels and herd them as well. Caused no end of grief for any guests they had over. One day, when a dog walker took the collie out for its walk, he broke away from the pack and got run over by a car, killing it. When my co-worker's wife ended up giving him the bad news, he told me that while he was broken up over the death, a part of him was quite relieved at the same time. He ended up getting another dog, but made it a point to match the breed to his family's living habits first. Posted by: Darrell Harris at December 18, 2020 11:01 PM (ocvaE) 223

Good doggie was just being good, but the match wasn't a good fit.
We have a wrinkle in doggie daycare around here (county just outside DC with a suburban and rural divide) where people who work 12+ a day and commute 2-3 hrs also get dogs who need something to do, activity, companionship, more purpose than living in a crate and waiting for that hour or two of quality time a day. There are people here with hobby sheep who make bank selling herding time to suburbanites with border collies, and give classes on it, so the dogs don't completely lose their minds being cooped up while fed worker mom and dad are on the road or in the office. She took the leash off just before she opened the gate to go in our side yard. Clover, for some reason, frisbee still in mouth, decided to dash into the street, in front of a car. Wife didn't know if she was going for the car, or something else on the other side of the street. The car drove over her but, miraculously, she came out on the other side unhurt. The frisbee wasn't so lucky; got gouged up when it got stuck under the skidding front wheel. I was out of town, and my wife called me, in a frantic state... she was about to have a nervous breakdown. Now we keep Clover on leash whenever we're near the street... which is a bummer 'cause I liked to walk her off-leash. But I couldn't face my wife if something were to happen to the pup under my watch. Posted by: Average Guy at December 18, 2020 11:55 PM (b2diN) 360

One for meat, one for veg (but not 'maters), one for shaving corn off the cobb, a really slender long one for the 'maters. No fucking clue what the other three are for. She uses all of them. They're reasonable quality steele, Hinkles, i think. They are hard steele, difficult to put an edge on, but whoa nellie when i get it right. Over the years, 38 next Oct., she's had the same knives. I've always been ok with small knives, but i've learned how to sharpen these particular knives to where they are scary sharp. As in, be right careful how i wash them sharp. I've cut myself to the bone multiple times washing them after sharpening them without feeling it. Smash is, particular, about her cooking knives. I'm just happy to put them into the co dition she likes to cook with, as i am a fat bastard from her her good cooking. Rambling. Yes, favorite knife. Speaking of dogs getting hit by cars when I was a kid we had two dogs, a German shepherd and a miniature schnauzer. I can't remember the context of the incident but the dogs were roaming a little around the street sans leashes and crossed the street.
Car stopped for the German shepherd to let him cross but didn't see the miniature schnauzer and the poor little rat got beaned. He wasn't hurt. Scratched up but mostly just shook up. From that day on whenever you walked him and a car came down the street he would hop up onto the sidewalk or grass and wait for it to pass. Posted by: Robert at December 19, 2020 12:08 AM (0fsZT) 389

Malls seem to have an interesting future.
I've noticed they seem to be going in two directions, what I'd call 'utility malls' and 'destination malls.' My nearest mall is, for better or worse, turning into a utility mall. Its most popular stores are Target and Costco. In other words, it's made up mostly of stores you'd go to for necessities. There are a few nice touches of course-- it has a California Pizza Kitchen and an H&M, among a few other higher-end retailers-- but those aren't major draws. Then in the town directly east of me, Cerritos, their mall is what I'd call a destination mall. They have a lot more high-end retailers including Nordstrom, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Banana Republic, and a very well-appointed movie theater. Ruger Hawkeye M-77 African, Thompson-Center Compass and Rock-River AR-15 w/ Lothar-Walther 18" stainless 1:8 bbl & .223 Wylde chamber. I think I've got things narrowed down to the right loads, for some truly Sub-MOA results, with each. When I get 'em dialed in, I'll stop expending ammo with each of them. I'm blessed with one particular blessing for which I am VERY thankful. I don't find my shooting skills to be perishable, in the slightest. From '99 to '04, I never fired off so much as a single round. Ended up with a 3rd place finish in an '04 IDPA match, in Stock Service Revolver class. My first experience with IDPA, ever. And I can sit behind a rifle and shoot cloverleafs, if all else is agreeable. What PRACTICE does for me though? Improves my TIMES. Reduces my FUMBLES. Calms my MIND. Practice IS VALUABLE. And I'm thankful that I get to practice the times, fumbles and mental drills, vs. the basics of tiny groupage. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 19, 2020 12:30 AM (QzJWU) 431

I'm already thinking about goals for 2021. Anyone else doing the same?
One of them is to set myself up a classic stereo system. I miss having one. I built a workbench so I can go through all the junker CB radios I bought off ebay. Hoping they mostly just need new caps and then I can sell them off to the next sucker. Then I'll tackle refurbishing the Grundig console unit from the late 50s that's in the living room. Or maybe the late 60s/early 70s Sansui receiver... Posted by: Blanco Basura - moronhorde.com lives again at December 19, 2020 12:32 AM (SchxB) 434
No rec on which type of lens to get, 'cause I haven't had that surgery yet (but I can see it from here, so to speak... it's a race with my knees to see which one gives out first).
I do have to say, though, that EVERYONE I know who's gotten cataract surgery (and I know a surprising number of them, for such a young guy) has been happy they got it. I can't say that about any other surgery I've ever heard of. Back surgery, on the other hand... it's hard for me to think of anyone who IS happy with that. Posted by: redc1c4 at December 19, 2020 02:01 AM (LaaND) Cerwin Vega speakers were designed around the idea of an exaggerated base note for hard rock and the early onset of heavy metal. Give 'em this though. They could handle the heavy power of late '70s Silver Face ultra high powered amps and receivers of the time. Bose could, too. But only if you placed them in a room designed IDENTICALLY to the Bose Test Studio "acoustic space" labs. One of the worst sounding speakers ever, is a Bose 901, played in the open at a family picnic. Just. NO. Same speaker in a 16'x20' room, from the long corners, with a simple drapery covering the wall behind them? Sublime. But ONLY in such a setting. And your choice of tile or hardwood or carpeted floor? Would decide everything. I *respect* Bose, their labs and their end products. But not their marketing, retail suggestions or thoughts as to usage, placement or such. Even their vaunted Wave Radio is a bitch as to where sited. Act, accordingly. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 19, 2020 02:09 AM (QzJWU) 497

Anyway, N721AL then heads out to FTY (Fulton County GA) at 9:32pm EST, 32 min stop, before returning to HEF. Meanwhile, N996GA has been in Macon all week. Posted by: Smart military blogger at December 19, 2020 02:44 AM (BBWrU) 508

Millions of Chinese residents have been left without heating in the middle of winter as cities ration electricity amid a blockade on Australian coal.
Chinese coal prices were 500 yuan ($100) last month but increased 760 yuan ($153) per tonne on Wednesday, which has now resulted in restrictions on power use for millions of residents, according to South China Morning Post. Some 57 million people live in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, on China's east coast, and have been besieged by power shortages resulting in electricity being shut off. The Zhejiang provincial government has now ordered offices to only use heating when the temperature drops below 3C (37.4 Farenheit), also seen is an online notice to a middle school in Zhejiang, banning staff and students from turning on heating if temperatures exceeded 3 degrees. According to China's state-owned broadcaster CCTV, lights and lifts in some office buildings were shut off in a several cities across Hunan and Zhejiang. The power outages forced some office workers in Hunan's city of Changsha to climb 20 to 30 flights of stairs, according to a report in the local news publication iFeng. China's central government claims there are no power shortages. Posted by: Brrrrrrrr at December 19, 2020 03:04 AM (BBWrU) Posted by: Puddleglum at December 19, 2020 03:08 AM (NiT+h) 516

Question for the horde. Has anyone here anything to recommend regarding these choices? Myself, I am leery of the "no corrective lenses required afterward" promise for the trifocal option. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at December 18, 2020 The mrs and I did his and hers cataract surgery last May. We didn't get the trifocal option, but a friend did, and he's had no issues at all.I wear a single 2.25 power daily contact lens in one eye. It keeps me from chasing reading glasses constantly. Mrs just does reading glasses, but her original eye prescription wasn't much, so she doesn't reach for readers as much as I. (My original prescription was -8.5 diopters).
