P&G offers many excuses for Gillette’s ongoing sales collapse in regulatory filing; Omits one very big reason
[Buck Throckmorton]

In early 2019 Gillette released its infamous “toxic masculinity” commercial which effectively accused its loyal customer base of being bullies and sexual predators. That ad sparked an angry backlash of men who are fed up with SJW attacks on them, and who vowed to stop buying Gillette products. (I’m one of them.) Six months later Procter & Gamble had to take an $8 billion impairment charge due to Gillette’s declining sales and the declining book value of the Gillette brand, which caused P&G to have an overall $5 billion loss that quarter.

We don’t know how many millions of men quit buying Gillette products after it went hyper-woke, because P&G isn’t telling us. But the Securities and Exchange Commission does require P&G to document problem areas and potentially impaired assets.

Procter & Gamble’s 10-K published in August for the fiscal year ending 6/30/2020 is a long slog of a report, but in summary, things are going well for all P&G units except “Shave Care”.

The COVID-19 pandemic that occurred during the second half of fiscal 2020 [This means January through June 2020 because P&G’s fiscal-year-end is June 30 - Buck] resulted in a reduction in shave incidents by consumers and a weakening of certain currencies relative to the U.S. dollar, which led to a reduction in net sales for Gillette-branded products.

So Covid caused the continuing erosion in Gillette’s sales?

The duration and severity of the pandemic could result in additional future impairment charges for the Shave Care reporting unit goodwill and the Gillette indefinite-lived intangible asset.

It’s weird, but as I perused this 10-K report, I found that there is only one P&G unit that may have an upcoming impairment charge, and that one unit is its “Shave Care” unit. Covid apparently isn’t having an impact on Old Spice sales (Old Spice is part of P&G’s “Beauty Care” division), but those same men still buying Old Spice aftershave have stopped buying Gillette razors. Yeah right. Or maybe it’s because P&G hasn’t yet run any commercials where it slanders its Old Spice users as bullies and sexual predators.

Has P&G identified any reasons beside Covid that might cause consumers to stop buying Gillette products? It has. And it’s missing one very big reason.

Net sales and earnings growth rates could be negatively impacted by more prolonged reductions or changes in demand for our shave care products, which may be caused by, among other things: the temporary inability of consumers to purchase our products due to illness, quarantine or other travel restrictions, financial hardship, changes in the use and frequency of grooming products or by shifts in demand away from one or more of our higher priced products to lower priced products.

Wow, P&G listed a lot of reasons why consumers might not buy Gillette products. In fact, given that “travel restrictions” is included as a reason, it seems kind of significant that P&G chose not to mention that there is a nationwide boycott of Gillette products. P&G would certainly never lie to the Securities and Exchange Commission in their 10-K, would they? No, they must have simply omitted mention of the Gillette boycott to shave one or two sentences from this 75-page document.

P&G can spin the collapse of Gillette sales all it wants. It can even be evasive in reporting Gillette’s collapse to the SEC. But it can’t spin or evade the fact that Gillette is now a toxic brand. Get woke go broke.

Reminder [ace]: People remember the Gillette ad attacking men, but they tend to forget the P&G series of ads attacking white people as racist monsters.

16 COVID certainly didn't help, what with the indifference to shaving that people can get away with (I shave less often myself), but I wonder if it's broken out for the first half of FY20 as well. I could go read the report, but I can't be bothered.

For men looking for decent razors without woke shit or subscriptions, I learned something about Dollar Shave Club when I canceled them for woke shit. They do no manufacturing. They partnered with a Korean outfit called "Dorco" and Dorco acts as their OEM.

You can get the same razors in bulk (20 or 30 at a time, I don't remember) on Amazon and it comes out to the same price as from DSC, without a subscription or woke nonsense. Other sellers are out there too, of course.

18 I think most of the decline is because beards have become fashionable again for men. I shave my neck and upper cheeks a couple times a week but have been rocking a full beard for the past decade.

That being said, after the Toxic Masculinity commercial I did stop buying Gillete products. I now use a safety razor with 3¢ blades I get from Amazon instead of those stupid 6-blade cartridges that are behind the glass at the drug store. I also use shave butter and Rite Guard for deoderant because f*** Gillete.

20 Those ads are why I stopped buying any modern Gillette products, and P & G stuff where I could. My vintage Gillette razors, none younger than 1965, don't put any coins in P & G's pockets; and I buy my blades from other makers like Personna and the Japanese company Feather. Shaving is an enjoyable activity and collecting the razors is a fine hobby. No need to encourage the company.

Senator Elect Tubberville,

I am hearing nasty things that imply you will not support Trump from the senate floor on the 6th.

If I wanted this type of GOPe behaviour, I would've voted for Dougie.

Get up off your 3rd point of contact, and support the man that got you that senate seat.

me
too, and I agree. Most kids go through all kinds of stages where they
question themselves and everything around them, more so if they have
life stresses beyond the norm.

And now the FIRST resort seems to
be "you're trans, here are your drugs, and let's get you in for surgery
next week!", instead of just providing support while they grow and
figure things out.

Some kids may indeed be gay, and I'd rather
see that accepted for that kid without a lot of angst, than the sorry
road gone down now.

There is no coming back from those surgeries, or those drugs; I think it is criminal to push kids so hard in that direction at a normal time of big changes in their bodies, and minds.

Yikes is right. The sad part is, black parents do still have that conversation with their kids and it is no longer warranted. Cops are not racist as a group and neither are the white people they run into. It does nothing to protect black kids from the nonexistent thing called "institutional racism".

What it does do is make those kids think that people's reaction to them has nothing to do with their actions and everything to do with them being racist crackers. That makes those kids both unwilling to take responsibility for their own actions and unable to see how they can control their own lives. That means that they will not try to better their lives because "the man" will just keep them down anyway.

76 I learned to shave with a double edge safety razor (picture your grandpa's razor), a soap cup, and a nice badger-hair shave brush.

I feel so old-timey and the shave is actually really nice. The badger-hair brush putting soap on my face is a nice ritual too.

I use Feather blades. They're super sharp and I can usually find them for $0.10 per blade. A blade usually lasts me three or four really good shaves.

77 I don't buy ANY P&G products. The only issue is making sure I don't buy one of their products accidentally, since they've got a zillion brands, many competing products.

I can only think of a couple of things that there's simply no competition I'm aware of - Fabreze being one. I believe that there's an Arm & Hammer washing beads to compete with Downy/Gain/Unstoppables/Snuggle/Clorox (they own it all), but now I've moved and have softened water that's not an issue so I don't need the product.

Barbasol makes a better shave cream, Lots of razor replacements. Since I have almost zero facial hair, I don't need to worry about that much at all.

And I've found lots of detergent (dish and laundry) and soap replacements. DIAF P&G. And your satanic logo too (no need to defend it).

Same here. And I've found that a good synthetic brush is even better than a badger. Years ago the synthetics used to be lousy, but now they are soft, hold more lather, and don't need to be soaked prior to use. A quick dunk into your shave water, squeeze the brush out so it's damp, and you're ready to go.

Regarding the sidebar, I agree, and I sympathize with the TERFs. This trans crap is in so many ways an effort to erase femininity.

Of course, the other major prong in the war on femininity is the effort to make pregnancy and childbirth viewed as a burden to be avoided, to the point of being willing to commit murder, instead of as a tremendous privilege to be respected and cherished. And I doubt the TERFs are with me on that one.

Feather blades are supposed to be the best, and dirt cheap. And sharp.

There are many beautifully made blade holders, which BTW 'ettes out there, a nice shaving kit would be a great last minute gift idea for the 'ron in your life.

My buddy Nick Shabazz on YT has done quite a few razor reviews (he does mostly knives or watches) to learn which are great for the price.

I almost bought a Merkur, but it really is a waste for me. Too much Choctaw, I could not shave for a month and look about the same. I can literally go for 2 months on the same razor. Of course, when I was in high school in the 70's, body hair was in. Now? I wouldn't have to worry about any of this "manscaping" shit. I was just naturally too far ahead of my time. Again.

I've gotta try to find more info on the great carrier raids on Kure, Kobe, etc in July '45. Have never read any substantial account of these. Lots of destruction delivered (to ships that weren't going anywhere anyway due to lack of fuel).

There's still an enormous shipyard in Kure I once looked down into through the fencing around it. I'm sure it must have been one where large ships were built back then.

Just down the street from there was a funny vestige of occupation - a "US Army dock" (still active, this was 2006). The sign listed three personnel by name as being in charge there. Was thinking, now THAT is some sweet military duty. Trying to imagine what they even did there any more. Receive shipments for Iwakuni, which is not that far away? Have no idea.

227 Oldcat, there were plenty of ships in Kure and elsewhere tied up, or sunk at the dock.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 18, 2020 02:56 PM (OTzUX)

Kure was the main base and harbor - its where the carrier fleet set off from to go to Pearl Harbor.

July might have gotten some remnants, and cargo ships but in April the Yamoto went out with 9 other smaller ships to attack the fleet at Okinawa and was sunk at sea. You'd want nothing but battleship armor for those tough shaving jobs.

"Consumer Reports' predecessor, Consumers' Research, was founded in 1926.[48] In 1936, Consumer Reports was founded[49] by Arthur Kallet, Colston Warne, and others who felt that the established Consumers' Research organization was not aggressive enough. Kallet, an engineer and director of Consumers' Research, had a falling out with F.J. Schlink and started his own organization with Amherst College economics professor Colston Warne. In part due to actions of Consumers' Research, the House Un-American Activities Committee placed Consumers Union on a list of subversive organizations, only to remove it in 1954. "

It was never about women for these leftist cranks. Ever.

If our hack spy services have an answer in just a matter of days or weeks, it wasn't Russia. So it is a lie, like every other time the last 4 years.

Do you mean TP? Cottonelle (sp?) has it, and another brand that escapes me. There's lots of tissue brands that have aloe in them. Kleenex, the brand that escapes me (the ex specified it by name), Puffs, even Costco's kirkland has one. I actually just avoided this at Costco, because I'm not keen on tissues that feel like they're already wet. I guess it would be nice if your nose was raw from a cold...

A 1960s trash Harold Robbins-style novel called The Movie Maker had as a plot point a wife who thinks her husband is going to kill her, so she writes a note and shoves it into the razor blade slot.

Years later, a man finds the note when refurbishing the house and uses it to blackmail the man, who is a Hollywood producer.

Funny they're running ads now that the "bargain brand" laundry detergent is mostly water, so buy Tide. They picture the Arm & Hammer yellow bottle. Gain has a similar ad!

I have a feeling their bottom line is being effected across the board. BTW, I LOVE the Arm & Hammer detergent. It cleans better, and smells better. Ok, so water outweighs any of the other ingredients. That doesn't mean it's 51% water. Fuck Tide, fuck Gain, take your pods and shove them where the sun don't shine.

Or you can have your own update agent in house... but that computer would then be compromised should there be malware in an update. But at least you could/should control the update process. That's what I did. I'd let the agent digest a new update or release and wait a couple of weeks to see if it was buggered up. If not, then the clients could be updated. 438 That's what makes this hack so interesting. Fed
guidelines (best practices) for the rest of us is to wipe everything and
start from scratch if anything close to this happened to us. Will they?
Can't imagine how much work that would be and how long it would take.

If they don't then the network isn't secure. Anymore, if you get any sort of ransomware or hack like this, it is the Aliens option. Nuking it from orbit is the only way to be sure. Had a client hit with ransomware and the heavy hitters called in by the insurance company gave me instructions on what to do. It could have been summarized in one sentence, "Nuke it all." They wouldn't guarantee any antivirus scans of getting it.

499 > Some kids may indeed be gay

Gay is a question of taste. One may disagree with that taste, or find it sinful, or whatever, but still it is fundamentally a matter of taste. Some guys like chicks in fishnet stockings, some guys like giant boobs, some guys like the hairy assholes of other guys. Tastes have nothing to do with objectivity or rationality. There's no "rational" reason I hate eating liver, while other people love it. That's just the way it is, and arguing about it is pointless.

"Transgender" is believing something that is CONTRARY TO FACT. It's not a matter of taste. It is a mental illness.

521 >>> Yikes is right. The sad part is, black parents do still have that conversation with their kids and it is no longer warranted. Cops are not racist as a group and neither are the white people they run into. It does nothing to protect black kids from the nonexistent thing called "institutional racism".

There are so many difficult conversations parents have to have with kids about various topics. Fairness, God, puberty and sex, bullying, being safe in social situations. But any convo designed to make the kid feel like a victim and powerless needs to be reexamined by society.

535 >>> I hear though Unilever is also woke, but I can only boycott so much. Posted by: Blago at December 18, 2020 03:48 PM (gkdnV)

I'm sure they are, but this is the larger problem for Unilever right now:

"Robyn Lipetz and Shannon Keener, both from the greater Philadelphia area, claim that Unilever United States, Inc., the maker of the TRESemme line of hair care products, and Conopco Inc., its distributer, should be held liable for the serious damage they and others have suffered. The hair loss and scalp injuries they suffered were caused by a chemical in the products-- DMDM hydantoin--which is related to formaldehyde, their class action lawsuit says. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can cause cancer, and other less harmful reactions, when absorbed into the skin, which tends to happen when applied directly to the scalp, for instance.

550 "I'll admit, there are a few PG products we still use. My wife
hasn't found anything she likes as much as Charmin. But we try to avoid,
when possible."

ULINE, the shipping products people, sells toilet paper in bulk. We use the ULINE Deluxe, which costs $37 for a case of 40 rolls. This is a lot cheaper than Charmin (for Charmin, ULINE charges $65 for a case of 24 rolls), yet it's just as good as Charmin. I'd be surprised if your wife didn't like it. And buying in bulk means you almost never run short.
