Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Put down the Christmas preparations and enjoy the world of animals.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

I received the following from TN Deplorable:

Mis Hum,

Just read the pet thread (great as usual) and for some reason was reminded of a great organization here in East Tennessee. Smokey Mountain Service Dogs trains service dogs for wounded veterans at no cost to the recipient. Our cruising club has done several fund raisers for them over the years. If anyone is so inclined to donate, it is certainly a worthwhile cause.

Regards,

TN Deplorable

I checked out the site, looks like a great organization.

Meet The PetMorons

IMG_4665001.jpg

Got this picture of our grandpuppy from our daughter yesterday, along with this:

I took 37 photos of Pepper in front of the tree yesterday but the absolute cutest one (the one I sent you) was the 1st shot. Happened completely by accident too, she had hopped up on the poof all by herself and was just smiling at me, so I thought “well how adorable is this” and tried to recreate the magic to no avail haha - Teresa

Well, I'm certainly happy she snapped the 1st photo. Pepper is very cute in front of the Christmas tree. Thanks for sharing today.

And

Basement mouse.jpg

Dusty, our AOSHQ-certified badass, is back with a couple more examples of hunting techniques. Last time out, he demonstrated how to kill a mouse by sitting on it. In the first picture here, he’s boring a mouse to death; and a few weeks later he dispatched the big basement mouse the old-fashioned way. - Matthew

It is good to see that badass Dusty earn his keep. Handsome and a hunter to boot. Awesome combination. We appreciate your contribution today.

Hiya,

Thought I'd pop a Christmas picture of Edison onto the thread.

Edison came to us from Shih-Tzu Rescue in Davie, Florida 8 years ago when he was 2. I still cannot believe that anyone could give this beautiful, friendly boy away -- a sad story for so many great pets. Thank goodness for the shelters, foster parents and caregivers that give dogs like Edison a second chance and a forever home. Merry Christmas and thank you for a wonderful weekly column! - Debra

Thank you for your kind words. Edison looks like a happy and loved pooch waiting for Christmas like a good boy. Thanks for sharing.

9 Good looking doggehs and kittehs! They look well spoiled! My tiny pups are currently enjoying the fireplace and the fuzzy blankets on the couch, patiently awaiting the movement in the magic room to subside so they can partake of some afternoon treats.

14 We've had to imprison the two House Cats into the master bedroom, with food & litter box, so as to allow the Porch Cat into the house.

Necessary to escape the absolute deluge going on outside, right now. We're talking a 2"/hr or more rate of rain.

Took an hour at 30/40 mph, to make it down from Dickinson to Galveston, on I-45. Visibility was as bad as I've ever seen it get in a non-fog situation.

Glad to be home. Now, for this hot bowl of soup to warm me back up.

Cheers, Horde!

15 I'm amazed at all the dedicated Shi-tzu rescues. I adopted one from a shi-tzu rescue near me in IL a few years back. These dogs have to be some of the easiest dogs to live with and care for that there is. Amazed at how many are given up.

16 Aww, what a great bunch of pets!
Christmas outfits, Christmas decorations.
We have a tree up, and so far the only one who has knocked it over is me, dancing while in my cups.
As I was restoring it, the 2 cats came and stared at me like "you dumbass"
They were correct.

51 flounder........
Our black lab/mastiff mix is now 14 years old. Rescue from a farm I used to work on. I could type for hours about what a good dog he is. Very gentle personality and he loves to work.
You will not be disappointed in this breed if that's what you decide on. Gotta admit, he had a wee bit of a chewing problem as a pup. When I say wee bit, I really mean 4 or 5 TV remotes, a couple dozen books, a few pillows, new pair of work boots, a few guitar cables.................
Separation anxiety. He just missed me.

54 The hoomans kept it so cold for days that we barely ventured out and had to find soft warm places inside to curl up and nap, nap, nap. MMmmm nap.

But today it is warmer and sunny and we can explore outside, and lie in the sun and nap, nap, nap. MMmmew.

We don't know why the hoomans sometimes hide the sun and make it cold and even sometimes make the frozen stuff cover everything. The whims of our hoomans are inexplicable.

And when we have to be inside, the least they could do is clean the litter box every time we use it! Ew! Slovenly humans.

We have had four dogs - two were Black Labs and two were Yellow Labs. They were all terrific dogs.

I am partial to the first one, a female Yellow Lab, mainly because she was the first pet we had. Puppy chewing can be easily be redirected to appropriate objects if you are watchful!

68 What, specifically (task and scale), will you use the cultivator for?

Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at December 19, 2020 02:56 PM (8C7+r)
Well, my back yard is broken into 2 vegetable garden patches, for a total of about 600 square feet. Some of it is given over to permanent plantings: rhubarb, currant bushes and raspberries. The rest I plant each year with different vegetables. When I had a big gas-powered rototiller, I'd use it to turn over the soil at the beginning of the season, then again after cleanup in the fall. That's pretty well all I was intending to do, BUT, if a small electric tiller can weed between rows of potatoes, I'd definitely use it for that during the growing season. The turning over of the garden probably took about 40 minutes total in the spring and then again in the fall.

600 sq ft is probably a little much for a cultivator to till. But for weeding between rows in that size patch, I think you'll find it pretty much perfect.

100 "I still cannot believe that anyone could give this beautiful, friendly boy away."

I used to vaguely suspect that if a dog was given up, there was probably a reason.

We've got three now who were given up, two of whom were clearly abused and are nothing but trusting and loving now. So now my default assumption is that, with rare exceptions, most dogs who've been given up could spend the rest of their lives loving someone back, given the chance.

126 probably a reason

I don't doubt that sometimes dogs end up at the pound or a shelter for a reason. But I've had five pound/rescue dogs now, and all of them have been good dogs. There are a lot of irresponsible, amoral folks out there who think very little of mistreating or discarding animals. There's also a lot of people who have no idea what they are getting themselves into when they get a dog. And not every breed is for every person. I like Heelers, for example, but when young they are a wave of destruction and they're assertive and disobedient. It helps to know what you are signing up for.
