I'm going to try a new format for the next few days. I'm just going to put a bunch of sidebar items into a main post. Not for all posts, just for a few scattered posts during the day.
My notion is that these are easy, quick posts for me, but it will also tend to promote more chat and reactions from the commenters. Also: I don't post a lot of stories because I sit around all day waiting to think of a Really Good Blog Essay to Write About Them. Of course, 95% of the time, I can't think of anything to say except the very obvious, and I wind up not posting it at all. So I'll post this stuff in quick hit format to make sure it's at least on the blog.... Pre-election, Twitter made it harder for posts and stories to go viral. This made the Corporate Media more important, because their stories always get seen. Their stories are, in effect, "always viral." It's people outside the Corporate Media who need virality to get their stories seen. And twitter turned that possibility off for the election. But now, post-election: Hey everybody, we're letting stories go viral again!

This isn't entirely true. The premise - which was discussed back at the start of the nonsense - is that spread of naked viruses is fairly rare but spread within water droplets from sneezing, coughing, rapid exhalation, etc. is much more common. So wearing the mask reduces the odds that a sick person spreads it.
There actually is something to that, and it makes some amount of sense. But most people aren't sick, and "asymptomatic carriers" are not as common as initially assumed and asymptomatic spread is rare. Making everyone wear a mask regardless of health is stupid and pointless and may well do more harm than good.

Correct. And there's validity to that, in the short term. Its part of why doctors and nurses wear masks in surgery, etc (mostly to prevent splatter, in truth).
The problems with masks isn't so much their usefulness but their necessity and use.
Is this virus really so bad that we need them? Answer: objectively, no.
Are people using them correctly? Again, no, not even close. You wear one for a short time and throw them away, not over and over again.

From the beginning of this mask nonsense, I have said I can't wear them and no one bothers me about it. The ONLY place that demands mask compliance is my doctors office. And the last time I was there, they forgot about it until halfway through the chat with Doc. He rolled his eyes when the nurse insisted.

When you track test positivity rates (the so-called "case counts") against time with mask mandates, there is actually a slightly *negative* correlation - that is, 7-10 days after the mask mandate goes into effect, positivity rates spike. It probably isn't statistically significant (from a significance standpoint, there is no effect and masks do nothing - no correlation), but it does crop up a bit more than the other direction.

Yup. Even a gaiter will help for the intended purpose - interrupting exhalation spread - but not as much. An N95 respirator with a valve does virtually nothing in the intended regard, since the airflow outward is nearly as wet and unimpeded as not wearing a mask at all.
It's all just compliance theater. And this is coming from a guy who - in the Before Times - actually would wear a mask with a medicated/antibacterial coating if he had to go into the office when sick to help not infect his coworkers.
Universal masking is entirely stupid in every regard.

YouTube the company is propagandist, but the channels kids are watching are mostly not. In my experience, kids are mostly watching people play video games, playing with toys, unboxing toys, etc.
It really depends on the age and sex of the kid. Pre-teen girls for example might be watching makeup tutorials, "what's in my purse", or other crap. I don't know.

Every kid I knew growing up in my neighborhood that had helicopter karen parents were constantly sick. Every last one. Basically the ones that were never allowed to leave their front yard and were isolated. I saw it in my own brother. His immune system wasn't quite like mine. He had allergies, used to get shots, always had colds until he was old enough to go out and do things with me. I'm the older one. By the time he was around 7 or 8 he was good, all gone.

It's interesting the first thing they've got to say is that we've been programmed by fox news. Yet they have no issue in pointing to CNN/MSNBC/NYT/WAPO as factual news sources. The really on top of it politypes read mother jones and daily kos to get both sides of the story.

Correct. The mask inhibits a range of aerosol droplets being exhaled (sneezed, coughed, etc). The range varies by the mask quality and fit, and the velocity of the droplets. The aerodynamics particle size of the passed vs inhibited droplets matters alot. It determines distance, the extinction time, and respiration rates. All of which matter if the droplet contains enough contagious material. This is a complex optimal search theory problem with many unconstrained variables, good luck.
Then you get to the impact layer - did masks reduce the number of meaningful droplets you encountered? Meaningful, being how infectious is covid and how susceptible are you to it. Since its not particularly dangerous, it's a small population that has to be protected. Again, huge - complex medical informatics problem. Good luck.
Then you have the policy layer - is the cost of masks worth it. Is reducing the chance of a vulnerable person encountering a viable viral load worth the cost incurred by the policy and the slowing of herd immunity. Those of us who are not vulnerable need to be exposed; either thru a random interaction (free) or a costly vaccine. We need the immune system development for future corona viruses before the the next Chicom attack incorporates gain of function testing to bring covid 19 up to the potential of SARS (15% fatal) and MERS (35% fatal), and effecting a wider demographic swath.

That's my impression. One of those things that soured me on boxing was the managed rise of some pretenders, and watching HBO and Showtime pretending each other didn't exist, when it came to promoting THEIR stars.
I also watched way too many fights that were clear to me as having been fixed, either the boxer taking a dive, or the judges being on the take.

I will say I have been watching the Kelly/Parnell case on a daily basis. They petitioned for a Writ on the 11th. Responses were due from PA on the 14th. As of this morning, a response has not been filed and no ruling has been made on the petition. It is very odd.
