44 When we went to adopt one of our dogs from a shelter, they brought her out and she was a mess. We expected that since we saw pictures before we started the adoption process, but what still brings tears to my eyes was when the shelter worker asked, 'do you still want her'?

Apparently, someone else had looked to adopt her and then turned her down when they saw her.

Broke my heart. She was the best and most loving dog we've ever had. We had her five years before her murmuring heart gave out when she was gleefully running up the stairs to see us when we got home from work one day.

The more people I meet the more I love my dogs.

70 Amistad Project has a big report out about private funding to elections, teasing that it's evil in the usual ways that all things funded by the usual suspects are evil, etc.

One. WTFFFF is private money doing involved with election processes?? A new low and absurdity in this debris field of a crashed republic.

Two. What are the specific improper actions that changed election outcomes? That's all that matters. We can get to the outlandish insanity of private money in elections later, this election and its (lack of) integrity are all that matter right now.

The other day the NY Times was crowing about that...see? Dems are responsible and the Republicans ? nay, even catching the Covids is a sign of evil disregard!

I am beginning to suspect a complete coverup of all the democratic senators and DNC leadership and Biden team that have coughed-up Covid phlegm balls these last few months because that would be in complete keeping with the steaming pile of subservient manure that is your main stream press...

146 Well I was going to save this for a pet thread but after seeing the video about the mama dog rescued from a hurricane, I though I'd share.

I just adopted a "potcake" from a rescue org that flies dogs that survived Hurricane Dorian from Grand Bahama to Florida. His mama was hugely pregnant when the storm hit and the shelter took a lot of damage and lost some dogs. I'm not sure if he was born in the shelter or taken there after the storm, but it was a hard luck case either way.and then civic came along and delayed progress for months, keeping him in a Bahamian shelter until last weekend.

I had to keep the windows rolled down on the way home, he was ripe! But after giving him the mother of all baths he cleaned up well.

His big brother dog took him right in and they spent their first night together piled in a soft dog bed. My mean old cat surprised everyone by walking right up to the newcomer, without incident.

After only four days, I contacted the rescue org and told them its not a foster, its an adoption. I'm gonna spoil the real outta him.

Now, to pick a name...

They are the stray dogs in the Bahamas, part pre-Colombian somethingorother, part terrier from wooden ship days, and part whatever else made its way to the island and mixed in. Being mixed they can vary, but in general they are brown, short haired, about 45 lbs, smart, friendly, easygoing, and this one is really sweet. kinda like what you would get if you stopped selective breeding for a few generations or so.

They get their name from the locals who feed them scrapings from the family cooking pot. If you've ever been to the Bahamas then you may have seen them around.

So PSA since it was brought up:

There are flare-like chemical fire extinguishers that anyone who heats with wood needs to have on hand. They're sticks you light like enormous matches and throw in the stove or fireplace if you have a chimney fire (I'm told it sounds like banging or thunder in your chimney), and it releases chemicals that starve the fire of oxygen so it goes out.

Still call the fire department, of course, but that stick could make the difference the same way a firearm can while you're waiting for the police.

Just bought a shit ton of stuff for myself and family members. NSAIDS and allergy meds are a good thing to pick up - and a lot of first aid stuff and durable equipment are allowable too. So go do it if you have $ left and it's not spoken for already.

I was just getting screenshots of that this afternoon on a Windows 8 VM (it comes with the GPG4Win package).

The latest Thunderbird release comes with GPG/OpenPGP integration built in instead of as a plug-in with Enigmail, but when you generate a keypair, it doesn't require a password. You're supposed to use a master application password instead. Since that could lead to problems down the road if you want to export your private key, I figured I'd step through generating the keypair in Kleopatra first, then importing it into Thunderbird. It's really only a few more steps, and it gets you the shell integrations too (so you can easily right click and encrypt a whole file instead of just emails).

485 @385 b.d., I can tell you exactly how you got that tent so cheap.

When those first came out, close on 50 years ago now, I bought one, for about $125. It seemed so perfect for motorcycle camping, because it was so compact. Once I tried using it, I found the assembled little fiberglas wands almost impossible to pass through the loops that formed the dome structure.

After a whole season of fighting the damned thing, applying talc powder to the plastic fabric, polishing the wands, I was ready to pitch that tent. My gas pal had a 20-some-buck simple pup tent, nylon canvas but no high tech, and I offered her an even-up trade.

The first time we went to put up our traded tents, I erected hers in about five minutes and felt pretty good. She assemble the struts, pinched the far end of the fabric loop, and huffed into the closed pocket WUFF just once. The pouch opened up and as far as I know she is still using the damn thing.

I had to get up at 11pm, find suitable barbed wire to be beaten with by 12pm, deliver it to the disciplinarians while apologizing for it's insufficiency as a disciplinary tool, then give a lengthy erudite speech about how barbed-wire beatings are less effective as a motivation tool than buggery.

Yeah, the current TBird integrates it into the master application password and doesn't require a password for the private key, which I realized when it didn't ask me to provide a password when generating the keypair. I want to document a standalone GPG install, saving the keypair, and then importing it to TBird and using it without making it overly complicated or difficult to follow - easy enough for a beginner tutorial. Trying to thread the baby here.

514 >>> 485 @385 b.d., I can tell you exactly how you got that tent so cheap.

Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at December 16, 2020 09:21 PM (zMFmR)

It was a bit of a bear to put up. The paperwork said it was expedition ready and was supposed to withstand gale force winds and rain with the fly and tent anchored down. But honestly, if I ever got myself into the sort of situation where I'd need that level of tent well, I must have screwed up bad. I mostly used a tiny one-man for my self when I was single. And then with a family nothing short of a giant Coleman tent would do. My wife prefers cabin or better hotel camping.

The thrust of the article (don't want to copy the whole thing), though, is that by losing, the Dems own everything that comes out of Congress. They can't blame the GOP. And the split in the Senate would be too narrow to push anything major through (they mention DC Statehood and packing the Supreme Court). Trump is only mentioned a couple times, and not in a negative way, which is refreshing.

539 About that Kansas case. It took a bit of deep digging but here's what I found:

1. Kansas had the nation's only requirement that certain kinds of documents were necessary to prove citizenship to vote. This was not ID to prove who you are at the poll. That was not at issue.

2. The law was struck down by the federal district court, as best I can tell, because Kansas's somebody-or-other official on this said (fwiw) that the law would have prevented more legit citizens from registering than it would have prevented non-citizens from registering.

3. 10th Circuit affirmed.

4. SCOTUS denied cert. Gorsuch did not participate because he was on the 10th Circuit when the case was argued, though I don't know whether his connection in that regard was as attenuated as possible or whether he actually participated in the decision. I don't know what the vote was, but obviously less than 4 voted to hear it.

604 539 About that Kansas case.

My research showed the same thing as SFGoth's except I think proof of citizenship was required in order to register to vote (birth certificate, passport, etc). I believe Kansas still requires a picture ID to vote and that requirement was not addressed by the court (though not from lack of trying). I agree with you bat nationalist that this is the least that should be required... especially with the push to give illegal aliens driver's licenses.

It placed a burden on voting but it was a burden hardly unconstitutional...States are allowed to place certain burdens upon voting as long as they are not unconstitutional burdens. There is simply nothing in the constitutional denying any state requiring absolute proof of citizenship and if you read the opinion, no Art of Constitution is actually recited that forbids a requirement of proof of citizenship. So, essentially the SCOTUS made up such forbearance as it there want to do these days...its Politically Correct to do so, of course, but it has zero relationship to their assumed duties under Marbury.
