As Garcetti Shuts Down LA, He Makes Sure to Keep It Open for His Hollywood Donor Pals

Some very few people matter.

Most don't.

The power-mad mayor of LA has banned walking.

Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a new emergency order Wednesday that bans unnecessary "travel on foot" as he warns the city is nearing a "devastating tipping point" in their fight against COVID-19.

...

The order prohibits "all travel, including, without limitation, travel on foot, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, automobile, or public transit," with limited exceptions.

Individuals who work in the healthcare and news industry are allowed to travel, along with individuals going to grocery stores, gas stations and other locations deemed essential.

Garcetti also ordered all residents living in the city "to remain in their homes," forcing businesses that require in-person attendance to shut down. Gatherings that include individuals from more than one household are prohibited.

His order makes an exception -- for protesting.

However, the order has exceptions for a host of activities including "outdoor faith-based services" and for those "participating in an in-person outdoor protest while wearing a face covering, maintaining social distancing, and observing the Los Angeles County Protocol for Public Demonstrations."

He's destroyed the restaurant business in LA, so he's going to send some but not nearly all laid-off restaurant workers a one-time check for $800, which.. is nothing.

That's how much they make per hour at the low rate a restaurant pays them. It does not cover their lost income in the form of tips, which is where they make most of their money.

Critics charge that SERVE is not enough, and doesn't cover nearly enough people.

[D]espite the tens of thousands of food service employees being out of work, only 4,000 are to receive stipends. The shortfall of the stipends, as well as the applicants being selected at random for the money should the number of applicants go above 4,000, has drawn criticism from many in the sector.

"I do have to say that it’s good to see SERVE acting as a little stimulus for restaurant workers here in LA, all out of non-public funds. That's a good thing," Armando Rivas, a food service industry mediator in Los Angeles, told the Globe. "But this isn't enough. $800 is roughly about how much a restaurant worker makes in a month because they aren't salaried and because many rely on tips. So that $800 SERVE recipients are getting just gives them another month. That's it."

"It's just a partial solution to a problem they caused by stopping outdoor dining and reinstalling the curfew. It’s basically the city giving them a months' severance for screwing them over. And I should say only 4,000 out of the tens of thousands out of work in restaurants alone."

Garcettti might be feeling heat due to the below video.

In it, a restaurant owner cries that her outdoor-seating restaurant has been closed down due to the danger of covid, supposedly.

But then she pans the camera around to show a very-similar outdoor seating area that is open -- which Garcetti built for his Hollywood pals, and which he permits to continue operating.

4 At one point in GA today, the judge asked Powell if giving the state to Trump would even give him the Presidency.

Powell, rightly, answered that if there is fraud it shouldn't matter. She was interrupted by the judge saying "that's not what I asked." Of course she explained how they had other suits that, if collected would indeed give Trump the win, but it was still a brazenly political thing to say.

A judge is supposed to be an arbiter of justice, regardless of political consequence. If there's fraud, you throw out the fraud, whether that means the result of an election is changed or not.

Shame on that Bush-appointed Judge even to ask such a question.

47 There's a word for this. It isn't a new word, but it is a word that was banished from this country after it was founded. That word is "aristocracy."

That's what this really is. This is aristocracy. It isn't based on land ownership or raising militias, but it is aristocracy nonetheless. This version is based on connections, pull and possession of (or access to) raw state power.

Newsome and his pals at the French Laundry? Aristocrats. A diner owner who's been bankrupted by Newsome and his pals? Peasant (or serf, if you prefer).

It's the same with Garscetti. It's the same with Hancock (Denver's mayor). It's the same with all of these folks. They do it because they can. The built the system to allow them to do it. They have special privileges and the law does not apply to them (not the same laws, anyway). These people are *actually* privileged - not in the sense in which we in the US usually use that term, but in its literal and aristocratic sense.

The aristocrats have finally, using the power they seized under the guise of the 'Rona, managed to really live the life they want: the lives of the aristocracy, lording it over the peasants who are beholden to them.

88 The most irritating part of this (and it's all irritating) is how deliberately devious and self-serving it is. This virus, like all other viruses, spreads quickly and then drops off quickly. Garcetti and all the lockdown people know that in a few days, California's numbers will start trending down sharply (Look at hospitalizations in IA, NE, SD, for example. Everyone had their hair on fire about those states, and how those Republican governors were "doing nothing," and now hospitalizations have dropped for 2 weeks straight). But now that they've instituted their draconian, idiotic lockdowns, they'll claim all the credit for the inevitable improvements that will take place before Christmas.

The hell with all of them.

92 Banks are made whole, but the private small business owner is hardest hit. He has to keep paying business loans .. to the banks. And most business schools (as I understand it) involve dependence on debt instruments.

It is mostly corporate America that for firstly, avoided shutdowns (BigBox all open). Secondly, the stock market was first to be bailed out with $5T buying up bad debt and other infusions, so McDonalds is better positioned to ride out the drive through only hard times. (not sure how that works for the franchisee, exactly)

Absolutley. When you have a system where an entire class of people are not only unaffected by the harmful policies of government but are, in fact, the makers of those policies, you have THE system of government that sparked the revolution.

No taxation without representation was the SYMPTOM of the problem, not the problem itself. The PROBLEM was the people were being injured by a ruler that was not connected to them, felt no pity for them, and denied them the freedom, as a result, to do what was best for them.

When a government injures you through policy in persistent and unsympathetic ways, it is human nature to desire to be set free from such a government. That's the primary principle behind the Declaration of Independence.

122 The test positivity rate was a beautiful manipulation. Absolutely breathtaking in its dishonesty and efficacy. Even if the tests were generally good (and they aren't, or at leas there's little evidence that they are), it would *still* be an insane metric.

If you "have COVID" but have no symptoms, do you really have it? Does it really matter? Is it really a case?

In my opinion, the answer to all of those is "no." And since the amplification over 40 generations can find COVID easily - even if you don't really have it - then they get all the "cases" they want, and maintain their pretext.

It has been a staggeringly effective manipulation. I don't care about test positivity. I care about sick people. And there just aren't that many sick people at this point. Most of the COVID death were people on the bubble who had their deaths pulled forward by a few months - often at the direction of murderers like Cuomo. But most people who died of COVID back in March-May would probably be dead now regardless, COVID notwithstanding (this is not meant to trivialize those people's deaths, especially given that so many were needlessly accelerated by assholes in power).

COVID has peaked. The extremely vulnerable were already wiped out, and those who are extremely vulnerable now are less likely to come into contact with it if they're careful, and the virus has been around for a while and mutations tend to lead to lower severity on average. We also have therapeutics now that work.

It is all just so criminally evil. And it is all enabled by focusing on something that doesn't matter (test positivity rate) but that can be used to scare people with big numbers.

This.

I've been reading W.E.B. duBois's book "The Suppression of the American Slave Trade," (published 1896) and was intrigued to learn that most of the American colonies tried to impede (through onerous taxation) or outright ban slavery, but their legislation was "disallowed" by the British Crown.

The colonies' efforts were motivated by the moral considerations and by the more mundane and practical fear of slave insurrections, so the colonists were not happy about the Crown's actions.

Anyone else making a public assertion like that, without evidence, would have opened themselves to a libel complaint. I understand Big Tech says they aren't "publishers" within the definition of defamation law, and section 230 somehow magically confers immunity on them. But hiring a contract employee who libels someone else using your proprietary authority and technology and publishes their opinion on your platform, claiming to act with your authority, seems pretty straightforward to me. 2) The Democrats stole the election because they believe can run your lives better than you, they know better than you, they have the right to rule over you because that is what's best for you, for your country, and for the world

So if you want to see what the goal is for their election stealing, look at California. That's what they want for America.

170 "No" is on to something there, and it goes far deeper than the troll parody might realize. His throwaway statement - "The owners need to take President Biden's UBI when offered, and enjoy a better life without work." - is actually the root misunderstanding (or deliberate lie - it depends on the person) behind the astonishingly bad trade and economic policy of the past forty years or so.

Job gets outsourced? That's okay, we'll retrain you. Can't find work? Can't find good-paying work that you used to have? That's okay, we'll help you out and help make up the difference. Massive income and inequality destroying the middle class? That's okay, we'll tax the hyper-rich and give you some and it'll be better for everyone. (assume it all works, anyway)

The root of this entire scheme - from how we balance the trade deficit through budget deficits, to welfare policy (ties in directly), to the rest of it - is based on one profound misunderstanding or lie. That is "welfare is as good as work. Money received is as valuable as money earned."

This assumption is wrong. Profoundly, incredibly wrong.

177 Absolutley. When you have a system where an entire
class of people are not only unaffected by the harmful policies of
government but are, in fact, the makers of those policies, you have THE
system of government that sparked the revolution.

No taxation without representation was the SYMPTOM of the problem,
not the problem itself. The PROBLEM was the people were being injured by
a ruler that was not connected to them, felt no pity for them, and
denied them the freedom, as a result, to do what was best for them.

When a government injures you through policy in persistent and
unsympathetic ways, it is human nature to desire to be set free from
such a government. That's the primary principle behind the Declaration
of Independence.

Posted by: Shenanigans at December 07, 2020 01:44 PM (ZR7kf)

Aristocracy exists where the people who lead the fighting and put themselves at risk claim for themselves formal legal privileges as the spoils of war.

We have olilgarchy, which is where people who may not have any connection to war or risk use their resources to acquire informal power that they can use without consequence.

The difference between aristocrats and oligarchs is that oligarchs, owing to the fact they don't take risks, can be cowed by mere violence, whereas aristocrats might kill you personally in a duel for contesting their rights.
The US has never reached the point of a real formalized aristocracy, though in the South they did approach it. Some billionaires like Musk represent a limited sample of what American Aristocrats might really be like.
In the case of the US's revolt, it was PARLIAMENT that we were having problems with, not really the King, who since the Parliament reinstated itself despite King James' removal of the seal, had been supreme in England in fact (Elizabeth I's successes nonwithstanding.)

Using the King as the scapegoat worked well enough because he was the symbol of English power, against which we were revolting. But it was Parliament that would in turns crush us and coddle us, sometimes indicating they would let us do what we wanted, and in others, trying to exert control over us in novel ways.

You laugh, but I think there's a large faction of the World Order that is sorely disappointed this virus wasn't more deadly than it is.

So I guess they have to ride this one out, and hope there's some enterprising Chinese scientist working on the deadlier one.

That's always been the problem with viruses. If they're deadly, they kill off too many people too quickly, and if they're not all that deadly, people eventually grow immune to it, while at the same time the virus mutates toward being even less deadly.

You need genetic engineering to come up with the right formula, and clearly Covid 19 wasn't it.

Let's see what Covid 21 is like. Or 22. They may have to let this one peter out completely first. And besides, they have until 2030 to get it right.

I work at a co-lo data center facility. They had specific Covid protocols in place, but nothing too drastic. We would have a report every 6 to 8 weeks about someone testing positive, but not having been on site for a couple weeks.

Then they started some construction at the facility.....

Now we're getting 3 or 4 notices a week.

Now I don't know what kind of co-morbidity they might have had, but trying to get other friends to comprehend that the overall death rate has NOT increased, doesn't overcome their logic that these parents were "killed early" by a dangerous disease. One friend in particular is married to a doctor so she still thinks it is a threat to society.

What's fascinating is, with numbers of deaths related to lung cancer and heart disease and any number of other preventable diseases tend to not change from year to year to year, even as our so-called medicine gets "better," people don't seem to quite grasp how that works.

More often than not, how one lives is the single greatest contributing factor to how one dies. It dwarfs everything else, and yet we operate as if the threat is from out there, instead of in here.

Which doesn't matter, at least not for the presidency (and likely not for the reps either, given how the lines are drawn).

CA has 40 million people. It's the biggest state by so wide a margin that it isn't even close. So say some number of millions flee to places like CO and AZ and ID and NV and ID. CA will still be the biggest state and the major rotten boroughs will still be big enough that Dems win by default (or by theft, whichever it happens to be). Yes, they will lose some EC votes but this doesn't matter.

Take CO as an example. It went from light red to reliably (though not dark) blue. This will cost CA a rep after the census is done. And for the cost of that one (maybe two) electoral vote, they picked up *nine* reliably from CO forever, with comparatively little dilution of their pre-diaspora electoral power.

365 $800 is less than what a decent wait staff should be making in a month from tips alone. I had a girlfriend who worked at Outback and if she made less than $80 a night she was pissed. Of course, she was a cute redhead with huge tracts of land, so she probably did better than average.

Originally a Petard was basically a charge sealed up with clay and a fuse, which hopefully would burn down to the charge and set it off. They'd usually be set against or on things to blow them open or apart like a door on a castle. The fuse didn't always go off. Someone had to go up there and retrieve the thing because black powder was expensive, difficult to make well, and somewhat rare.

People are psyopped into the left's nonsense, a belief that only people who are truly at the end of their rope and have nothing to lose fight back. This is false. The left likes to use these people for show-rioting and show-protesting because they can easily be paid to carry signs - broke college students from affluent families fall into this category -- but you may in fact find in history it is people who have something to lose that actually form the forces that move the spheres. It is not when people have nothing left to lose, but when they have something to protect, that they become vicious. We are merely waiting for the sign.

Posted by: Cato, Collectivism Delenda Est, Post-Apocalyptic Scourge of the Seas

Some of you are so far into the wrong paradigm, you don't know where you are. We are post-using mass force to control a population. The vast majority of America will not tolerate anything that sends them back to 1866 because that's what any widespread "uprising" will do to utilities and other modern conveniences. China will not need a police state like some envision. Just expand the bureaucracy. China is offering everybody food, clothing, shelter, and 5G. What are you offering them? Nothing that's going to motivate them to destroy where they live.

The purpose of COVID-19 was to hasten the departure of people who were hanging on for the last months or couple of years of life, not doing much more than lying in a bed, expensively. That frees up resources (you know, death panels, hello). It also had the concomitant effect of looking like it was a highly virulent and lethal virus (because the heavy initial death reports were purposely coming from nursing homes). So, bang, engineer a virus to essentially be of minor consequence to people of a certain health range (i.e., no comorbs and below 60 years old) while it accelerates the rate of death of people in a certain health range (really old or old and with comorbs). Use it to take over the government and boom! No wars, no destruction, etc.

Sure, there'll be some culling, but it won't be because of the control difficulty. Bread and circuses are easy to manufacture these days.

People going hungry / getting put in camps really can't fight back. They fight back long before then, or not at all.
The purpose of the announcement of the mass election fraud to all (the Kraken) is not so much to win court cases, but to call out the system before legions of potential soldiers.

Will it come to that? Don't know. But the boomers seem to be thirsting for war.

486 Since a petard is basically a mortar applied muzzle first to a castle gate and exploded, I think that perhaps the original expression was "hosed by your own petard" and it got bastardized down through the years to "hoist"

Hosed...Hoised...Hoist

Everyone does now. After 20 years Snyder finally bent the knee.

I imagine the NFL gave him no choice behind the scenes.

Too many of the people in my immediate circle are of The Left. Not frothing at the mouth, mind you, being of The Left is like breathing to them. It just is.

They are looking forward to Fantasy PresElect Dementia Joe implementing a 100-day nationwide lockdown. Not just the masks, but a full on lockdown of the entire nation. That's what will fix everything. Asking the obvious questions, like um where will the food come from? Who will transport it? How about electricity? Natural gas to heat your home?

Hand waves dismissively.

The belief that it is"on" has a basis in an often
-used version of the phrase. It sounds odd to the modern ear, which us why it stuck with me.

Hamlet as published now uses "with," that is a fact. The phrase apparently pre-dated Shakespeare. If the play has always been rendered with the phrase as "with" and not "on," I happily yield the point.

495 Or make a scene and start lacing into him for being an "imposter Santa" and encouraging people in the line to not buy into the lie that this particular Santa is real, and that he is a liar looking to destroy Christmas for children. 496 I know Garrett is a leftist, part of the democrat machine, living in his ideological bubble with Clooney, Biden, Stelter, and the rest. But looking at the clearly insane mandates he's just imposed, is there a possibility that he also clinically retarded?

The only thing the might suggest he's not is that most Downs syndrome people are also quite cheerful and devoid of ulterior motives.

I'm starting to feel like the grandma in Mars Attacks, who cheers when the Martians take a laser flamethrower to Congress.

498 We have a local diner owned and managed by an 87 year old Greek immigrant. Our county is under a total shutdown order, only take-out. He's gone rogue, not closing, opened up his not just his patios but indoors dining as well. He says he will stay open until he sees a specific, personal court order to close.

We now eat breakfast or lunch there every other day.

Not
to be excessive, but these legal options take time and given how
corrupt the system is, will be thrown out on technicalities. The
ballot-box time is over.

No he did not, he cheated and slimed a landslide. That makes that landslide illegal and illegitimate.

503 Whenever I'm asked to feel sympathy or outrage on behalf of people like this, I want to know their politics and especially their voting history. In my experience, the vast majority of foodservice people are liberal, and are plenty vocal about their support for every idiotic "progressive" cause that comes down the pike. So if this woman is a conservative who's spent her adult life voting against assholes like Garcetti and Newsome, then fine, I'm sympathetic and outraged. but if she voted for either one of them, then fuck her. As Ace might say, she should sit back and open up a big can of Karma-Cola.
