Meet The PetMorons

126unnamed.jpg

Well, last night was a sad sad one here at the Satrose household. My daughter works at a small pet rescue shelter. (It ’s called Charming Pet Rescue and was started by one woman). An old feral dog had a litter of puppies a week ago and one of the pups wasn’t going to make it. My daughter brought it home because she didn’t want it to die alone. It was hard on her (and me!) to have to sit there and do all she could but know that it was going to die. And it did.

BUT the real story is that these small shelters DO make a difference, one dog at a time. Meet Kingston. He was a poor woe begotten mess of a dog that was dumped at the Shelter’s gate. He had a severe skin disease (I think it was a type of mange) and was in bad shape. Plus he did not want to be touched by anyone, having probably been mistreated.

But The staff at Charming got him medical care, worked with him, fostered him and found a forever home in the Northwest. Here is an amazing picture - you won’t believe it is the same dog!

There are happy endings. We just have to believe and work hard, and never give up.

Keep the faith! Love your pets, you are making a difference.

God Bless,
Satrose

So sorry you had to experience the heartbreak of that puppy's passing. Although a hard thing to do it was such the right thing to do. Thanks for sharing the positive news of shelter rescues.

This Big Poodle. He had to get paw surgery and had to wear the cone of shame. He was not happy. (No name given)

Hopefully Big Poodle is on the mend and is scarfing down snacks left and right. Thanks for your submission today.

Hello MisHum!
As previously mentioned, people sometimes move away and leave their furries in the street.
I found this one, or rather, she found me. Obviously an outdoor cat, older, female, long hair. No chip, but wearing a collar with the name “Audio”. Which seems appropriate because she has a very loud purr.
So, looks like I have a new foster charge, maybe a forever home for Audio.
She is keeping the mouse population down pretty good.
Kindest regards, navybrat

I saw the Subject line of Audio and I thought no way I can just post an audio clip. Big surprise when I opened the email and came across this pretty cat and a pretty neat story. Thanks for the contribution today.

Greetings, fellow moron!

I loved the pet thread today. I just realized that I should contribute to the community more. Long time reader, rare poster, etc. But some things will shake me out of my comfort zone.

I lost Auzzie yesterday. Brings a new meaning to Black Friday for me. He was 16+ (we don't really know) and he had what I hope was a wonderful life with us. He certainly seemed to enjoy it. He brought me so much happiness that I wanted to give you a picture of him in the hope that he could give a little happiness to the Moron community, even if it is just a brief smile and a "awwww".

Requiescat in pace, Auzzie.

Oh I 'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Auzzie lived a long life and from the looks of it a happy one in a beautiful location. My condolences.

This is Drago, been meaning to send something into the pet thread, but always forget until I read the Pet Thread. So, I send this now, for maybe next week. Not sure how long the waiting list may be.

Australian Shepherds are not from Australia, but a cattle dog bread from the American west…go figure. The wife ask what to name the pup as she was heading out the door to take him for his 1st Vet visit. I was kicking back watching McLintock. Chill Willis had just uttered the line "I'm still the ramrod of this outfit. That better be followed by a "yes sir"”. Well, Drago it is. He is wicked smart. He will look at you, cock his head to one side, and you can hear the wheels spinning. Barbara is retired now, and he is never more than 10 feet from her. Unless the UPS guy drives up, and he is at a dead run to give him what fore. The driver one time started to reach the back of his hand to let him get a whiff. Barbara yelled “don’t do that!”. At the UPS guy. Drago was crouched back on his haunches ready to leap. To his credit the driver could see that just because he was not barking, did not mean he was ready to become friends. Drago understands his job. Protect the homestead. I have 2 acres fenced in, and even though he can leap to get his 2 front paws and go over the rail fence. He doesn’t. He knows it his yard, and he defends it vigorously. He has only has 2 speeds a run, and flat out. I do not know how much of this little diatribe’s you want to use, but I could go on for hours about Drago. Definitely the “Ramrod of this outfit”.

“Paladin” Rios,

I love the movie McClintock. And the name Drago seems to fit your dog like a glove. What a wonderful companion you have there. Thanks for your contribution.

The tuxedo cat is Tiger, formerly a bookstore cat, now a cranky senior citizen.

The brown fuzzy cat is Hershey, a chocolate tabby Persian with defective ears. I got him two weeks ago. He’s about nine months old and thinks his name is “Ohmygod! No-o-o!!!” It’s been so long since I’ve had one, I’ve forgotten how rambunctious a young, healthy cat can be.

Captain Josepha Sabin

Thanks for the photo of 2 cats together. So you can herd them? Your name for the kitteh isn't bad. I once had a puppy named Dammit!!!! We appreciate your contribution today.

Long Time Lurker here. Love this thread and all the morons who take part. This is Gabriele or Gabby for short. She’s a “shorkipoo” for all you purists. She’s also fearless and protective and doesn’t realize that she’s 12pounds. I’d take a bullet for this dog! Love this site and this pet thread. God bless you and the USA!

Looks like Gabby is one little fluff bucket. Fearless, protective and fluffy. What a combination!!! Thank you for sharing this afternoon.

Been quiet on the Pet Thread sonce Splotchy passed. MegaRoy doesn't really snuggle, he's more of an ambush predator. 17lbs of Maine Coon cat, ambushing me in the dark. Eventually, I'll get his ass on camera and post that. Probably get a girly squee when he 'gets' me in the bargan.

Put my game camera in the side yard to see what I could see. Got 120 videos over the next week. Mostly squirrels and chipmonks. One monster of a groundhog, neighbor kitty, several racoons. And these cat killers here.

Three coyotes moving through. Now I need to figure out how to trap the bastards.

Link goes to Rumble, because eff Google and EweToob.

I had to put down my Jack in January and I am sooo lonely.
I have a ton of pictures on my phone. Breaks my heart a little more each time I flip thru the pic's. Just the thought of having to do that again is stopping me from going forward with an adoption. I'll give some more time.

13 Neighbors down the street moved. They had two well trained dogs, a yellow lab and a doberman guard dog. On very few occasions in the past they would briefly leave their perimiter to sniff me and get quick scritches before owners command to return. Last week they appeared as i bicycled by, gave me quick dog kisses and got prolonged scritches, the doberman girl nosing my hand away from petting the lab in order to pet her! They were *absolutely saying goodbye!*!

Watched the security cameras and one member said that dog belonged to her neighbor and just had puppies last month. 30 Oh, love them all. Elvis would have my lifelong devotion. Audio will be the best cat ever. I took in a cat, back in the eighties in Texas, a young white Tom that neighbors moved off and left. Took him to the vet because his paw was injured; they only charged for the antibiotics because I was being a "good Samaritan." I didn't know his name but said he was my cat's buddy, so they put Buddy on the medicine bottle and it stuck. Sweet, serene cat. So much so, that I blew up a photo of him and used it as a focal point when giving birth to my son. Well, sorry to be long winded. Audio brought back the memories.

---

We explored pet insurance once but the restrictions on breed specific "preexisting" conditions was a deal breaker. We were better off just paying cash because they had a list of 20+ things they would not cover for either dog we had at the time.

From diabetes to hip displaysia, they pretty much would not cover any of the big stuff that dogs come down with.

And a tailbone. Ouch.

Miniature dachshunds have quite the bark for a little dog. Not to mention a lot of attitude. My ex's grandparents used to have a standard, I'm not even sure if they're a thing any more.

Smaller dogs with low centers of gravity are more dangerous than a lot of 100lb+ dogs I've met. Had a friend with a classic English bulldog, and that sucker could knock the 18 year old me right over just coming up for skritches. I used to call him the asthmatic anvil. Sadly only lived about 5 years.

------

My buddy's lived til eight, but yeah, they're not really a viably constructed dog. Wonderful personalities, though.

And with Duke, he lived up to the bulldog's reputation. Another one of our friends was fiddling with a Taser and (accidentally) tagged him with it. Just barely, but enough to piss him off for life.

He never really had a problem with the guy who actually did it, but if you pulled out any black plastic square, a remote, a cell phone, whatever, you would have to hide it somewhere he couldn't get to, and he would still sit there and bark at it for a good fifteen minutes before he calmed down.

58 No pets on the counters. Spray bottle worked well to reinforce that to the cats. But the terrier dog we had would jump on the dining table just to look out the kitchen window. She knew it was verboten but did it anyway. Perhaps not being able to hear the NO hurt the training process. I never tried the spray bottle on her, but not sure it would have worked, she really loved playing in water, biting at the stream from the hose etc. But I'm no dog trainer. She was smart and wanted to please so with a lot of supervision and diversion training - or with scat mats she probably would have gotten the message. I kind of figured scat mats would shock me more than the dog so I never bought any to try.

Then there's a "straight" Shorkie which is slightly less curly. Or the same. Seems to be a LOT of variety in the Shorkie-Poo's, at least the ones I've looked at so far.

I'd imagine that these designer dogs might have a huge advantage over purebreds having a larger if not limitless gene pool. I haven't been paying attention to what they've been doing, but dang, these things are cute!

65 We are all maintaining here. I got my order of Duralactin this week so will report on it next week. The young dog won't eat the vanilla flavor. Loretta, the dog that had the seizure is doing much better. I have given her a pain pill pretty much every day. She really hasn't done a lot except sleep. Today she is running around and hopping a bit so must be feeling better. Gary, with cancer, is still eating okay but really doesn't run any more. He seems to get winded easily. I just take it a day at a time with him.

Sorry for those that have recently lost pets. It's hard but it shouldn't stop you from getting another one some day.

73 Spray bottles are awesome for training. My little gray female cat used to tease my older blind cat to distraction, and the spray bottle worked wonders. Pretty soon all you have to do is show it to them and they squinch up their eyes and desist.

Then I was misting an indoor tree with a spray bottle, and caught little gray one watching me in horror, wondering what that tree had done that was so bad.

85 Awesome pets this week.

Oliver is cute as a button.

I would love to have a mouser around. They picked corn recently and I have found a couple of dead mice in the garage. Gotta find me an Audio, too.

Big Poodle cone of shame made me laugh.

Tiger and Hershey look like a pair. Love the tuxedo cats. The persians always looked like pugs in a cats skin to me.

Gabby is adorable.

Elvis is, well, not just in the building but taking up the entire building. Beautiful dog, and those eyes are seriously cool.

Auzzie looked fun. 16 is a good run and he'll be waiting.

Drago has a beautiful coat and these days you need a tremendous watchdog. Sounds like you scored.

Kingston is my make my heart hurt story. The first picture looks like he has just no will or life left in him. Same as that dog in the Quarantine Cafe the other night. Until someone loved him enough and gave him a new lease. He looks so happy in that 2nd pic it makes it a little dusty in here. Bless you for taking him in. My next dog will be one of those forgotten ones. We're starting soon.

95 Wonderful group of pets today.

Jerk cats had me laughing so hard tears were running down my face. The constipated one is very familiar. Tuxedo cat has been experiencing constipation the last couple of months. Not bad enough to go to kitteh ICU, but bad enough to exhaust him for a day once he'd expelled the offending lump. He's now taking a bit of a cat laxative every evening and gets rewarded for cooperating with a bit of butter.

Sorry about the losses. It's so hard. We lost our Himalayan about six weeks ago. It took a little more than two weeks before we decided we had to get another one like her. I know a Persian breeder, so I called her to ask for a reject. I'd give just about anything to get Katy (or any other pet for that matter) back, but Hershey has sure helped plug the hole she left.

Right after spouse got the news and was sitting shocked in the living room, the one cat-the big black cat came and sat down on FenSpouse's lap. 133 Fenlon, I did in home care for 8 years, worked in a nursing home several times and cared for my mom, who had Alzheimer's, in my home for 3 years. It's the craziest thing, but my dog started acting odd and one day I realized that she was acting just like mom and my dementia residents. I did some research and found out that doggie dementia is, indeed, a thing.

For example, she paces the house and stalks me in the evening (sundowning), and she often stares into an empty room, as though she is trying to see and figure out if someone is there.

It's her behavior in the evening and sometime at night that's driving me nuts. Most nights she sleeps through the night but sometimes she wakes me up, wanting out and then she just wanders and sniffs forever and it's freezing out, and with my cancer and chemo I really need my rest. Yeesh.

137 My Rottweiler pup, Logan, had a bad fall on some frost-covered bark in our local park. It looks like broke one toenail down to the nub and may have other injuries. It took an hour to help him to walk home the 3 blocks.

Now he can't bear to put any weight on either of his back legs. He's just able to move enough to get outside to pee and poo, but that's it. I'm grateful for that.

He's 8 years old and 130ish pounds. I can't get him to the vet's, due to his size. I have a stretcher on order from Amazon, and a portable ramp to try to help him get in and out of the house...and maybe my car.

And I'm wondering if I'll never be able to take him for a walk again.

Right now, trying rest and painkillers. NSAIDS.

It's hard, having a dog hurt. He's my boy. Nothing and no one has ever loved me like this dog has.

.223 not necessary.
Inside 40 yds, maybe more, a brain shot from a 22LR, at least Stingers, will take a coyote down right now. Boiler room shot takes a bit longer but not much.
Learned the other day that at close range, quartering away and just behind and at the base of the ear a 22 takes down big wild hogs too.

Sometime I'll have to get Inspector to write up the story of the day he realized his two mini dachshunds had teamed up with his cat to upgrade their diet from high protein kibble (by using the kibble to bait pigeons into a prepared kill zone). "Scary smart" describes whichever critter came up with the technique.

153 "Audio is precious!"

She is good addition to the family. Our other cat, Dexter, wasn't too friendly at first, but now they are OK with each other. I took Audio in during a rain shower, she was soaking wet. All that long hair was like wet wool on her. I dried her off, got her fed. I posted around next door about a lost cat. No one responded.
So, I guess she stays.

159 vmom, I was diagnosed in August. triple negative, metastatic breast cancer. Rather advanced. Really surprised me, as breast cancer doesn't run in my family. I mean, like, nobody else has/has had it. Shows you what I know. Ladies, get your mammograms. But the surgeon said as fast as it was growing, getting my mammogram on time may not have shown it. Many of the signs were there but I was ignorant and didn't know what I was noticing.

One frustrating thing is that I has having extreme pain in my left arm, which I thought was a work related injury. I brought it up to my regular doctor and she had me doing rehab. Then I finally got my mammogram and, lo and behold, I have breast cancer and cancer in my LEFT LYMPH NODE.

165 Mark search around and ask for referrals to a veterinary chiropractor. There is a professional organization for them that will have listings in your area. Many of them are certified in acupuncture also. I have seen vet chiros really help pets quickly. Your dog probably subluxated his spine or hip. A chiro who is a vet will understand your dogs physiology and will only adjust them if it will help and not create damage.

166 I have GOT to send in pics of our two kittens, Biscuit and Butter. Biscuit is a classic tabby, five months old and already ten pounds and growing. He's a daddy's boy and wants my husband to hold him when he's home.

And then there's the three pound orange terror, Butter, who thinks his name is "Get the hell off that!!!!!" or "Stop it!!!" But he is a momma's boy and when he's not attacking his yuge brother, loves to snuggle.

Swore we wouldn't have more kitties since losing our two sweet elderly girls, but these little boys are filling a hole we weren't aware was there.

176 Beautiful Pet Morons today! They all look healthy and happy for sure.

The black cat in the meme up top looks a lot like the late Marie-Antoinette, who was a demanding monarch. Whatever you were doing, it wasn't as important as feeding her or petting her or playing with her, and did I mention feeding her? She belied the royalty image every day, though, when she sprang into your lap and kneaded you with her front paws.

One week in Denver, I came home from a business trip, having left her in the home-visit care of a neighbor who treated her well. The moment I stepped in, she opened her trap like the cat above and gave an extended meow that clearly meant, "Where've you BEEEEEN?"

My little mixed breed pooch Scarlett, who we adopted back in 2009, is lovingly referred to now as Benjamina Button. She ages in reverse, thinks she is a puppy again. Runs around the house like her ass is on fire, wanting to play, something she did not start doing til about three years ago. We're afraid she's going to pull something one of these days.

They said she was NINE years old when we got her. Even if they were wrong by five years, she's still ancient. Love her so much.

184 As I mentioned, my rat terrier is getting old and probably only has a year or two left here. I was thinking that some day soon, hubby and I would be where we cold toss a couple bags in the car and run off on a short trip without figuring out, "what are we gonna do about the dog?". But he decided to get a puppy.

"We need a puppy.", sez he.
"No we don't." , sez me.
"Yes we do."
"No we don't."
"It'd be good for us."
"No it wouldn't."
"It would bring us new life."
"It would be a pain in the butt."

Of course we got a puppy. Correction: HE got a puppy. I said that I would help train, feed, care for and even show it love and affection, but it was HIS puppy. So anything he chewed up, etc would be 100% hubby's responsibility.

That was a year and a half ago. The puppy is mostly out of the puppy annoyances, and just in time for the old girl to get dementia.

Btw, it's hilarious when the puppy decides to play with the old girl and she snaps and snarls at him and he just sits there wagging his tail like she reacted exactly the way he wanted her to. It reminds me of little boys when they tease their mom until she yells at them.

199 The Story of Bonnie and Clyde:
I've told this once before, but here goes:
We have an older male cat, Thor. He's a cool cat, beautiful, a bit crazy. Fair lady Robin and our princesses convinced me Thor needed companionship. I saw a no kill shelter with a sign up that said: Kittens!
Went home and told the crew. We saddled up and went kitten shopping. The princesses fell in love w/an all black kitteh, who later became Clyde. They were housed in tiered cages, about 3 high, 8 ft. off the ground. They were crating up Clyde, and explaining where they came from. Clyde, and his sister, (Bonnie) were rescued from a wood pile.
As they said this, I felt a tap-tap on my shoulder, and turned to look straight into Bonnie's eyes. She seemed to be saying: "We have been through SO much. You are NOT taking my brother."
It wrecked me.
We now have 3 cats.

Turned out that according to the x-ray tech at the hospital, I had a "very interesting" badly broken ankle. A rod, a couple of pins, and a bunch of physical therapy later, it was okay -- but I haven't played frisbee with a dog since!

Still feeling the loss of my Lab Lady Elizabeth Rose, to use her AKC formal name. Liz was her everyday name, she was my shadow for 12 years.

What a gigantic hole she left in our lives. The neighbors actually brought flowers when they learned of her passing, she was truly a neighborhood fixture especially with the kids.

For years the trick or treaters would "borrow" her to accompany them up and down the road. I almost thought her life was children, and we were there just to provide food and shelter.

Not sure what to do about a pup yet the wife refuses to say either way so I soft pedal that,I'd have one in an eyeblink.

Meanwhile I get my dog fix through the Pet Thread, so thank you so very much.

222 Politics can go on the chess thread, where it says, "As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment."

223 They are beautiful. If I lived in a colder climate I would love to have a Newfoundland, although scooping the poop could be a problem and they wouldn't fit through my pet door which is cocker spaniel size.

Sounds like you'd need a grain scoop for that job.

224 irongrampa, if you are concerned about your pet outliving yourself (it could happen) you can still adopt, just designate care for you pet in your will, allot some $, that always helps.

225 You're making want to the pound or rescue web site.
I had to put down my Jack in January and I am sooo lonely.
I have a ton of pictures on my phone. Breaks my heart a little more each time I flip thru the pic's. Just the thought of having to do that again is stopping me from going forward with an adoption. I'll give some more time.

Take the time you need. But focus on the good memories instead of the loss.
You and the new pet will both benefit when you get one. Best wishes.

IF you have a trusted next of kin, you can set up a Transfer On Death (TOD) or Payable On Death (POD) CD for them in a reasonable amount to cover the care and feeding of your animal.

228 TRUMP IS SPUNKING ON OUR FACES AND PEOPLE ARE CHEERING. TOTAL SELLOUT.

229 Auzzie was the best. My wife convinced me that I should try a dog after a lifetime of cats. I was halfway to agreeing with her when someone at my customer site posted that they had to get rid of their dog and I answered the post.

She and her husband had just had a child and were living at one of her father's investment homes. Dad was a shit and told her that she could live in the house with the dog or the child but not both. So she had to put the dog up for adoption.

When he joined our house, he wouldn't get up on the couch to join us despite us reassuring him that it was okay. He tried to sneak up onto the couch by oozing up onto it, despite us telling him he was welcome. He wore a bald patch on his chest trying to sneak into our good graces. When he finally figured out that we weren't going to punish him for being on the couch, he would jump from the 3rd step to the couch and land on my crotch at full gallop because he wanted to be with me while we watched movies.

Fifteen years of a fuzzy creature who gave me unconditional love. Who greeted me when I got home after work every day with excitement and love. A handsome dude who knew it and worked it hard to meet strangers and give them just a hint of the joy he gave me day in and day out.

I didn't deserve him. I just hope he puts in a good word for me when I finally kick the bucket. I can't think of a better reference for my eternal resume.

230 Vmom - My condolences on your loss.

Captain Sabin - Likewise. My condolences.

irongrampa - My condolences. I wish you the best.

NotsoThoreau - Good luck, dude. I know how painful this part of the journey is and I wish you luck with it.

Mark - Likewise. I don't have any advice for you. I just hope you and your pet are at peace.

Fenelonspoke - You're absolutely correct. The other dogs absolutely know when I'm upset. When SWMBO and I fight, the medium dog will inject herself and jump on us to comfort us. The tiny one has been on my lap almost constantly when I'm reminiscing about Auzzie. They've been very helpful this past week.

Katya - Fuck cancer. Having been through a bout myself, I look forward to welcoming you into the survivor's club. Kick its ass and take its spine as a trophy. You got this.

All - Auzzie was part German shepherd and part fox terrier. It gave him the face of a fox and the coloration of a German shepherd. He was about the size of a juvenile GS for all of his life and it gave him a youthful appearance. He was handsome as hell and he knew it. Like a lot of dogs, he would bark at & chase squirrels and holy shit one day he actually caught one. I don't think I've ever seen him so proud as he was that day. He was a great dog.
