Rock N Rollers Still Rebelling
Iconic rock n rollers Van Morrison and Eric Clapton have had enough of the Nazi, Fascist, Commie, Covid Chinese Kung Flu lock downs.
Under different circumstances, it’s not hard to see how the idea of Van Morrison and Eric Clapton teaming up for a new song might be appealing. One of them is among rock’s most acclaimed vocalists and songwriters; the other is a guitarist lauded for his skill and style for decades. That their collaboration would come on a song addressing the present moment opens up a world of possibilities: could they, perhaps, be working on a song in support of first responders or communities whose health is at risk from the pandemic? 2020 being 2020, that’s not actually what brought Morrison and Clapton together. Instead, the two men have teamed for “Stand and Deliver,” a song opposing pandemic-related lockdowns, which is set for release on December 4. The Chicago Tribune has more information on the song, which Morrison wrote and Clapton performed. That the song takes the position it does isn’t much of a shock: Morrison has spent the last few months speaking out against the lockdown (and being soundly criticized for it.) On one hand, he’s spoken about the economic ill effects of shuttered venues on the music industry, something few people would argue with; on the other hand, he’s referred to social distancing as “pseudo-science” and supported a return to concerts at full capacity. And Clapton has had his own history of taking troubling stances on issues.

I haven't seen anyone wearing masks outside in my hood, thankfully. On my walk yesterday, I passed by a couple with their young kid. They just said hi like normal and the little cutie shouted hi at me.
I passed by another family (looked like immigrants from somewhere in Asia (not East)). They made sure they stood where they were, a few feet from the sidewalk while I passed. It could be that they were scared. Could be that they thought they were doing me a courtesy. Regardless, no mask.

I will agree with you on Clapton. As for Van the Man, in my mind it is the period in which he rose to fame. Call it soft rock, whatever, he was the best songwriter of that era and genre. Good for her. Perhaps the most shocking thing about this is the people that are acting as if this is what they've needed their entire lives. I can be out in the open space district and see people walking with masks and gloves. Not a soul around for miles. And they see you walking towards them on a 10' wide paved bike path and they dance into the weeds to stay away from you.
People by themselves in cars wearing masks is way too common. Scary. Of course, they also tend to be the ones blocking the fast lane on the freeway going 61 mph.

Actually, I think that's the case. I really don't think that musicians will be allowed to tour for long time; I have heard that we will have to use masks until 2024; you can't perform that way. Also, Ticketmaster is playing with the idea of forcing you to have either the vaccine or a test before being "allowed" to go to a concert.
I won't comply, and probably will not ever go see a show again if these are the rules.

Of course it's possible things will turn out correctly on the national level, in which case, I wouldn't mind being around them. But decades of indulgence and humoring and forbearance for ignorance and moral narcissism and un-thinking hamster-citizenship are over, enough.
Needed a rollerblade part and went by the a sporting good store today (they're almost all gone, this is one of the survivors, small chain I think, they sell lots of used gear as well as new). Has always been a great place - I've gone there before when I needed a part, and they just root around in their junk drawers and find one and give it to me. If anything, they're even better now. Guy went the distance and beyond trying to solve my problem, and even came up with excellent work-around ideas.
I never leave that place without buying something, hockey's still cancelled, so I went to the golf section to buy something small. The kid there turned out to really know his stuff on clubs, so had a good discussion about upgrading to non-steel shafts, he knows a good place to pick their brains and get fitted/evaluated.
The owner's what I now call a "dangerous" person - i.e. a thinking reasonable person who's decently informed and actually shares key concepts and principles of western civilization and historic American civic culture. I said hello (it was great, he obviously simply doesn't wear a mask, ever), asked how the store was doing - he said OK, he's not closing again, he'll literally stay open as a fruit/vegetable stand in the parking lot if any more shutdown crap comes. I said, well, we may be looking at a lot more than just our usual CA idiotic tyranny - he nodded, as did the customer who was shopping for skis.
I first learned of his dangerous tendencies about 6 years ago when he told me he'd pulled his kids from public school, because the nonsense they were being taught just didn't stop, despite interventions with teachers.

Bought a nylon string guitar for my 21st birthday (only a couple of years ago, of course), even though I have very small hands and a steel string would have a thinner neck (or whatever it's called). Just preferred the sound.
Learned super fast - chords, sight reading, etc. I could play relatively complex pieces (for a newbie) from one of the books in 2 weeks.
Then I got busy/lost interest, and now I remember almost nothing.
Easy come, easy go, I guess.
If I had excess time, I'd like to pick up the piano again. My keyboard just sits there, lonely, unless I need to learn a choir part.
Oh - no choir this year due to the vid.
Sigh.

I just got a 75" for $1500, and there's some for under $900 from LG and Samsung.
I've been wanting a big screen for 15 years. Maybe a good thing I never got one. I think 12 or more years ago, a 60" was like $3500 (and huge back then), and I'd saved up to put one in my dedicated media room. The ex decided to buy a flat bed Model T with that money. Something else that gets sold when we divide assets. On a positive note, it's probably worth as much as it was when bought.
Electronics are the one thing that constantly improve by leaps and bounds, and drop in price. Fuck, my Fat Mac and a dot matrix printer were $3500 in 1984. That's $8700 in today's dollars. That would buy you a mac pro, an insane monitor and still have money leftover for a few bottles of Pappy VanWinkle.

I know the feeling. I still have my 46" flat screen that I bought for myself for Christmas in 2011. It was my first ever flat screen. I think I paid $1000 for it.
Couple years later, I think they were going for half that. I imagine today you could get them for half of that.
The same applies for cell phones. I have a friend who has been standing in line for the initial release of the new iPhone for years. I always keep my Samsung phones for a couple years and then end up buying the next to newest release. i.e. getting the Galaxy S8 when the S9 is being released.
Granted, I have always been a bit behind on upgrading technology. Last first date I was on in 2011, she actually mocked me for not having a smart phone (I still had a flip phone with limited capabilities beyond calling and texting.).
She couldn't understand how an engineer did not have a smart phone. (Nevermind the fact that I had just gotten out of 2 years of being unemployed and had a very limited budget).

Aguilar bass amp took a dump so we sent it in and the band bought a Genz Benz Magellan 350.
Also bought a 4-10's cabinet. Think it's an Aguilar but not sure.
Anyway, incredible combination.

My former boss hired a new guy, and new hires typically set up introductory meetings with team leaders. During our meeting, I found out he used to play for an orchestra in the Philly area and now plays in a Berkeley orchestra. Of course, covid had interrupted that. He plays quite a few instruments. We spent almost half of the call talking about music. It was fun.

Hey TeeJ! I'm jealous. Aguilars sound very nice. I always wanted an electric upright, but couldn't find one I could afford. Even an El Cheapo is around $2.5K. Too rich for my blood, so I got an Ashbory bass and put some bass ukulele strings on it. It's fretless with a double-scale neck and a piezo pickup in the bridge with a battery. And about 2ft long. Whenever I'd get it out at a gig, I'd always joke "I'm gonna play a little bass."

Their friendship always kinda baffled me.. Clapton stole George's wife, but they still remained very close friends til the end..
Legend has it that "Badge" was the name of the song when it was simply the chord progression viewed upside-down on the lead sheet by either EC or GH, don't recall who. Or something very similar.
Yeah, I never got their relationship either. Some friendships transcend wives, I guess. Anyway, the music world is better off for it.

Its what introduced me to Bonamassa, among many others, and made me realize exactly how *good* John Mayer actually is on the guitar. Something I never knew when I had only ever heard his pop hits. Supposedly Clapton quit doing the event because of his arthritis. I wish he had handed the reins to Mayer and continued it. I can't recommend the DVDs enough if you're a guitar fan.

Amazing how this inverse Moore's Law effect works for electronic equipment, but not for healthcare, even though health breakthroughs take place all the time.
I believe that breast enhancements, rhinoplasties and Lasik surgeries drop in price over time, but nothing else in healthcare does.

I honestly don't know. I haven't been to a doctor in 20+ years. Last time I was sick enough to go was after freshman year in college in 1995. Last time I broke something was in Little League in 6th grade, 1988.
I thankfully have not had to think about the cost of a hospital or doctor visit at all in my adult life, beyond just making sure I apply for my coverage through my employer.

O-care disastrously reinforced every single pathology in the current system and introduced new ones.
But since the society is pretty illiterate (including "educated" people, including "conservatives"), nobody even understands any of it, and *as long as they're OK, there literally is no issue*. The GOP exploited the "repeal" sentiment among much of the electorate, of course without doing much about it. But even in that, they showed no hint that they understood what should be done. Trump has nibbled at the edges.
But really, looking at what the populace is putting up with, and what much of it just did in the voting booth, there's little chance anything intelligent will happen.

I love that song. And Zac Brown Band did a great cover, mixing it into one of their songs. Never a country music fan, but those guys are really talented.
My Top 5 would include Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd), Children of the Sea (Sabbath), Closer to Home - the live version (GFR), Analog Kid (Rush), and Eruption/You Really Got Me (Van Halen).

I've tried Bluesville and the New Wave channel. Nothing else grabs my attention. I've come to think that at even $60 for the first year, it's not worth it. My drive to work is less than half an hour; that's just five hours per week of listening.
I'd rather listen to CDs. With them, I know what to expect.

It is not the government's job to provide our healthcare. I would prefer they just get out of the way of "innovations" like direct care practices (that are really just a reversion to a time when people did not expect the government or a third party to pay their doctor).

It really is a fun movie. Goofy as hell, with some dark moments. Kind of a weird homage to noir detective flicks. Robert Downey Jr is apparently the worst narrator ever, because he tells up so early on.

He has recovered after being filmed in a wheelchair in an airport a couple of years ago with some type of unspecified illness. He's usually good about getting his recent appearances on EweTewb nowadays. He's 75 years old now and still a guitar god. I'm trying to learn some of his licks, but there are so many good ones it's mind-boggling.

yeah, sadly I just gave the piano away 3 days ago, because of the move to the new house. We heard of a little girl that wanted to move up from a small electric thing she was playing and try a real one, so we gave it to her. I usually would play the peanuts thing around the holidays as a tradition. Not this year.
