Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Rock N Rollers Still RebellingIconic rock n rollers Van Morrison and Eric Clapton have had enough of the Under different circumstances, it’s not hard to see how the idea of Van Morrison and Eric Clapton teaming up for a new song might be appealing. One of them is among rock’s most acclaimed vocalists and songwriters; the other is a guitarist lauded for his skill and style for decades. That their collaboration would come on a song addressing the present moment opens up a world of possibilities: could they, perhaps, be working on a song in support of first responders or communities whose health is at risk from the pandemic? 2020 being 2020, that’s not actually what brought Morrison and Clapton together. Instead, the two men have teamed for “Stand and Deliver,” a song opposing pandemic-related lockdowns, which is set for release on December 4. The Chicago Tribune has more information on the song, which Morrison wrote and Clapton performed. That the song takes the position it does isn’t much of a shock: Morrison has spent the last few months speaking out against the lockdown (and being soundly criticized for it.) On one hand, he’s spoken about the economic ill effects of shuttered venues on the music industry, something few people would argue with; on the other hand, he’s referred to social distancing as “pseudo-science” and supported a return to concerts at full capacity. And Clapton has had his own history of taking troubling stances on issues. Troubling stances? Oh how dare Eric Clapton differ from your philosophy Tobias. Whatever happened to diversity? I haven't bought a single in decades. I might change that on December 4th. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Since music came up.
I got out about and hour ago to run a couple quick errands. Tune into Sirius XM to hear some music and get a break from politics, right? RIGHT? Wrong. I'm treated to the stupidest drivel from some fuckwad named "Jim Ladd" playing the worst song ever recorded by Todd Rundgren that was such a lame stab at DJT. It was like the worst SNL sketch from the last four years. If you tried to parody an out-of-touch Lefty puking up a turd, you couldn't do better than what I heard. Stupid, insulting, substance-free preening. Posted by: ghost of hallelujah at November 27, 2020 08:09 PM (oAY8z) 34

Just like the people wearing them in their cars on the highway. I haven't seen anyone wearing masks outside in my hood, thankfully. On my walk yesterday, I passed by a couple with their young kid. They just said hi like normal and the little cutie shouted hi at me. I passed by another family (looked like immigrants from somewhere in Asia (not East)). They made sure they stood where they were, a few feet from the sidewalk while I passed. It could be that they were scared. Could be that they thought they were doing me a courtesy. I tried it for my local rep Elissa Slotkin and it looks like it works. Except in order to get the staffer name, you have to upgrade to "Pro" level on the site.
How to Get Your Complaint Noticed by Politicians If you want your correspondence read, you need to send it directly to a staffer - making it personal. The first thing to do is go to: "www.Legistorm.com" and type in the Senator or Congressman's name - click on the staff tab and "Tah-dah!" you now have a list of all the Congressman's/Senator's staffers - their job titles - and how much they make (this is why I like this site and recommend it). https://bit.ly/2JgxTNB Posted by: Clyde Shelton at November 27, 2020 08:23 PM (Do5/p) 128

That first paragraph says a lot about the author's knowledge of music, saying Van Morrison is "one of rock's greatest vocalist" but Clapton is just a "lauded guitarist"
Look I like some Van Morrison songs, but he's hardly "rock" and had a few hits ever, he's a slightly edgier version of the Eagles. Meanwhile Clapton is neck and neck with Hendrix as the greatest rock and roll guitarist of the last 60 years, and technically much better. I bet the author thinks Green Day is a punk band.
I will agree with you on Clapton. As for Van the Man, in my mind it is the period in which he rose to fame. Call it soft rock, whatever, he was the best songwriter of that era and genre. Nothing wrong with being the best at the softer stuff. It's like saying Neil Peart was "less" because he was the best lyricist of the hard/progressive rock genre. Don't diminish them. Celebrate their awesomeness. Posted by: Mookie at November 27, 2020 08:38 PM (3vIkC) 188

I just came up with a new (to me) guitar exercise to stretch and strengthen the fourth finger on the fretting hand. You know how you can do string to string tuning - play the fifth fret and then open on the next string (except on G where you play the fourth fret)? You can make that into a playable pattern. Two notes, each string. Plant your first finger on the first fret on low E, and play the sixth fret with your pinkie. Do the same thing on each string, but you'll play the fifth fret on G. All the way down, all the way back. Move up one fret, then repeat.
This may not sound all that hard, but unless you have absurdly long fingers it's a good workout, especially on the lower frets. Posted by: Insomniac at November 27, 2020 08:40 PM (nakwk) 202

Actually hoping the idiocy in CA is maintained/ramped up just until Christmas, which would mean not having to be around people I need to not be around at the moment.
Of course it's possible things will turn out correctly on the national level, in which case, I wouldn't mind being around them. But decades of indulgence and humoring and forbearance for ignorance and moral narcissism and un-thinking hamster-citizenship are over, enough. Needed a rollerblade part and went by the a sporting good store today (they're almost all gone, this is one of the survivors, small chain I think, they sell lots of used gear as well as new). Has always been a great place - I've gone there before when I needed a part, and they just root around in their junk drawers and find one and give it to me. If anything, they're even better now. Guy went the distance and beyond trying to solve my problem, and even came up with excellent work-around ideas. I never leave that place without buying something, hockey's still cancelled, so I went to the golf section to buy something small. The kid there turned out to really know his stuff on clubs, so had a good discussion about upgrading to non-steel shafts, he knows a good place to pick their brains and get fitted/evaluated. The owner's what I now call a "dangerous" person - i.e. a thinking reasonable person who's decently informed and actually shares key concepts and principles of western civilization and historic American civic culture. I said hello (it was great, he obviously simply doesn't wear a mask, ever), asked how the store was doing - he said OK, he's not closing again, he'll literally stay open as a fruit/vegetable stand in the parking lot if any more shutdown crap comes. I said, well, we may be looking at a lot more than just our usual CA idiotic tyranny - he nodded, as did the customer who was shopping for skis. I first learned of his dangerous tendencies about 6 years ago when he told me he'd pulled his kids from public school, because the nonsense they were being taught just didn't stop, despite interventions with teachers. I'm not surprised by Clapton's stance. He's been clean and sober for over 20 years; he established the Crossroads Center, a reknowned addiction treatment facility on Antigua, and organized the Crossroads concerts to raise funds to support his facility.
In nearly thirteen years of sobriety, I've come to the realization that sobriety is essentially a conservative concept. It demands rigorous honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness to admit that I am not the center of the universe and I might even be wrong. Taking personal responsibility for my actions, both past and present, is vital to my continued sobriety; I cannot blame others for my disease. I have to admit my mistakes and seek to make whole those I have wronged. None of these ideas would have a place among leftists, statists, and the would-be tyrants who heeded Rahm's dictum to "never let a crisis go to waste" and cranked up the Kung Flu panic to 11, enabling them to push mail-in voting and possibly allowing them to steal the 2020 presidential election. The casualties of the left's policies, both near-term (businesses and jobs, families, et al) and long-term (our nation), are of no concern to them - they're too busy blaming Trump for everything. Their day of reckoning will come, and the judge they'll face won't fall for their lies. Posted by: Cowboyneal at November 27, 2020 08:46 PM (U2zo0) 228

Bought a nylon string guitar for my 21st birthday (only a couple of years ago, of course), even though I have very small hands and a steel string would have a thinner neck (or whatever it's called). Just preferred the sound.
Learned super fast - chords, sight reading, etc. I could play relatively complex pieces (for a newbie) from one of the books in 2 weeks. Then I got busy/lost interest, and now I remember almost nothing. Easy come, easy go, I guess. If I had excess time, I'd like to pick up the piano again. Posted by: Mr Meeseeks, Look at me at November 27, 2020 08:46 PM (2DOZq) I just got a 75" for $1500, and there's some for under $900 from LG and Samsung. I've been wanting a big screen for 15 years. Maybe a good thing I never got one. I think 12 or more years ago, a 60" was like $3500 (and huge back then), and I'd saved up to put one in my dedicated media room. The ex decided to buy a flat bed Model T with that money. Something else that gets sold when we divide assets. On a positive note, it's probably worth as much as it was when bought. Electronics are the one thing that constantly improve by leaps and bounds, and drop in price. Fuck, my Fat Mac and a dot matrix printer were $3500 in 1984. That's $8700 in today's dollars. That would buy you a mac pro, an insane monitor and still have money leftover for a few bottles of Pappy VanWinkle. Posted by: clutch cargo at November 27, 2020 08:54 PM (8B6Ng) 278

I get pissed every time I pass my $2500 45" Flat screen TV in my living room I bought in 2009. I got my 65" LED in my theater room a few years later for $1500. Now I see they had 70" Smart TVs on sale today for $800. Posted by: Mr Meeseeks, Look at me at November 27, 2020 08:46 PM I know the feeling. I still have my 46" flat screen that I bought for myself for Christmas in 2011. It was my first ever flat screen. I think I paid $1000 for it. Couple years later, I think they were going for half that. I imagine today you could get them for half of that. The same applies for cell phones. I have a friend who has been standing in line for the initial release of the new iPhone for years. I always keep my Samsung phones for a couple years and then end up buying the next to newest release. i.e. getting the Galaxy S8 when the S9 is being released. Granted, I have always been a bit behind on upgrading technology. Last first date I was on in 2011, she actually mocked me for not having a smart phone (I still had a flip phone with limited capabilities beyond calling and texting.). She couldn't understand how an engineer did not have a smart phone. (Nevermind the fact that I had just gotten out of 2 years of being unemployed and had a very limited budget). And we don't know if that's lab-confirmed cases, requiring hospitalization - the only category of "cases" that matter, at all. Yes, I like that one!
This song was co-written with George Harrison, who did that Leslie effect guitar part in the middle on the recording.. Their friendship always kinda baffled me.. Clapton stole George's wife, but they still remained very close friends til the end.. Legend has it that "Badge" was the name of the song when it was simply the chord progression viewed upside-down on the lead sheet by either EC or GH, don't recall who. Or something very similar. Yeah, I never got their relationship either. Some friendships transcend wives, I guess. Anyway, the music world is better off for it. Its what introduced me to Bonamassa, among many others, and made me realize exactly how *good* John Mayer actually is on the guitar. Something I never knew when I had only ever heard his pop hits. Amazing how this inverse Moore's Law effect works for electronic equipment, but not for healthcare, even though health breakthroughs take place all the time. Darrell, exactly, and a major reason is that the procedures you mentioned ..... are not covered by "insurance". It's a pure fee-for-service situation, wherein the technology and pricing benefit from medical advances, competition, and consumer choice.
You know. The basis for the entire f***ing society and its prosperity. It's about as clear and pure an econ lesson as there is. Of course there has to be* some level of subsidy/welfare in medical care, writ large, given our social norms. But a level of welfare in this area that would be lavish beyond anyone's imagination would be *easily* financed by a portion of the savings from re-organizing medical care and especially medical care financing on normal market lines. O-care disastrously reinforced every single pathology in the current system and introduced new ones. But since the society is pretty illiterate (including "educated" people, including "conservatives"), nobody even understands any of it, and *as long as they're OK, there literally is no issue*. The GOP exploited the "repeal" sentiment among much of the electorate, of course without doing much about it. But even in that, they showed no hint that they understood what should be done. Trump has nibbled at the edges. But really, looking at what the populace is putting up with, and what much of it just did in the voting booth, there's little chance anything intelligent will happen. * for the truly indigent, etc, for "pre-existing conditions" or special/congenital issues that aren't insurable Posted by: rhomboid at November 27, 2020 09:18 PM (OTzUX) 442

I think the most recent one is out on DVD or will be soon. IIRC, the video MisHum linked above is from it. I have them all on DVD. There are some classic performances on them for aspiring guitar stoodents such as yours truly. Posted by: BackwardsBoy - #FightBack ............
* for the truly indigent, etc, for "pre-existing conditions" or special/congenital issues that aren't insurable Posted by: rhomboid at November 27, 2020 09:18 PM (OTzUX) Rhomboid, Asshoes and Runner, Exactly. If I were to reform healthcare with a magic wand, I would simply give everyone a catastrophic insurance plan and an HSA with a high deductible, and have at it. For those who can't afford the deductible - say, $5000 - I would, as the government, fund every baby's HSA account with 5K, and that's it. That 5K can be invested, like a 401(k), and the proceeds used to pay the deductible when that came about. Let the market forces take care of everything else. Rhomboid, regarding the illiteracy that you mention, this is being exploited right now. When you say that the WuFlu is only fatal to less than 0.5% of everyone who actually even gets sick from this, people see that it's not a big deal. When the fearmongers personalize it, saying that you don't want this to happen to your kid or grandparent, all logic flies out of the window, and we mask up and shut our economy down. I don't know how to fight that, or to get people to understand that you don't need the *best* healthcare - just *good enough* - in most instances. I suck at both guitar and keyboards. Thing is, I play the guitar harmonically but play the keyboard melodically. I know the barre chords and can make most open chords (some them be tough) and can strum in multiple time signatures/rhythms. On the keyboard I can't make any chord without thinking about the fingering, yet with a little "getting used to", I can play most of the melodies I'm working with. Two diametrically-opposing approaches.

Here's Bob's solution to "solve" Healthcare. 1. Recognize it's a problem caused by socialist new deal policies (paid Healthcare insurance as a sweetener to offset government imposed wage controls) and then exacerbated by more socialism (Obama care). Solution- abandon the field. Abolish mandatory insurance requirements, tax benefits the same as wages, let people take the money or the benny, abolish restrictions across state lines (an actual legitimate exercise of commerce clause powers). That's it.

No medicare, no medicaid, no HHS. No government regulation of health insurance, no health insurance as a job benefit (they don't offer auto insurance). Just doctors and patients. The patient can elect to have insurance to cover catastrophic occurrences, but routine care and prescriptions should become affordable.

Posted by: SFGoth at November 27, 2020 09:47 PM (KAi1n) The only thing I can play on the piano is the peanuts theme. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at November 27, 2020 09:51 PM (Vxu+H) yeah, sadly I just gave the piano away 3 days ago, because of the move to the new house. We heard of a little girl that wanted to move up from a small electric thing she was playing and try a real one, so we gave it to her. I usually would play the peanuts thing around the holidays as a tradition. Not this year. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at November 27, 2020 09:56 PM (9Om/r) 568

my older BIL annoys me with his liberalism, but I still like being around him because of his musical skills. He's quite unassuming, he''l say "I'm not really that good", and then I've heard him sit down and play over 2 hours of Chopin perfectly, from memory. No music. He did Rachmaninoff some, but he says Rachmaninoff had freaky long fingers, no normal human being can do that fingering right.

I was in a band that did "Moondance" back in the day. The piano player used to do the vocals and one night he had a bad cold and announce the song as "Boo Dads", we have it on tape and it's hysterical as he did a complete play on the lyrics like his nose was stuffed.
The new name stuck for the rest of the time we were together. He still has the tape. Funny in a you had to be there sense. Musicians. Posted by: pawn at November 27, 2020 10:35 PM (Cfk8j) 586
The original post noted politically correct characterizations of Clapton's statements on race as "troubling":
"Troubling stances? Oh how dare Eric Clapton differ from your philosophy Tobias. Whatever happened to diversity?" Sadly there are a lot of woke nannies who complain about Clapton speaking this common sense: "Keep Britain white. I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism. It's much heavier, man. Fucking wogs, man. Fucking Saudis taking over London. Bastard wogs. Britain is becoming overcrowded and Enoch will stop it and send them all back. The black wogs and coons and Arabs and fucking Jamaicans and fucking... don't belong here, we don't want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don't want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man. We are a white country. I don't want fucking wogs living next to me with their standards. This is Great Britain, a white country. What is happening to us, for fuck's sake?"
