John Hayward on our loathsome elites [Buck Throckmorton]

This is a great essay tweeted out by John Hayward about our loathsome elites.

Privileged elites always want to assert their status by indulging in pleasures denied to the lower classes. This often leads them into immoral, deranged, and even criminal behavior. They're desperate to flaunt their power by doing what lesser folk are forbidden to do.

This is one of the reasons for the wave of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and pedophilia among the richest and most powerful. They indulge increasingly depraved appetites to savor the sweet, sweet high of doing what ordinary people cannot, feasting on the food of the gods.

It's also one of the reasons high-living elites are drawn to puritanical secular pseudo-religions, like the Church of Global Warming and now the Church of Covid. They have a deep appetite for making aspects of modern life forbidden to the Little People, but not to themselves.

You'll notice that high acolytes of the Church of Global Warming have absolutely no intention of compromising THEIR extravagant lifestyles. They jet set, they have yachts and huge cars, they buy beachfront mansions on property they claim to believe will be underwater soon.

But they have a deep desire to make planes, cars, and accoutrements of the First World lifestyle forbidden to the proletariat. They love how their ideology elevates them into a superior overclass, reaffirming their importance by asserting they "need" or "deserve" so much more.

These elite appetites are useful to the Left because they fold neatly into its endless war against the hated middle class. The perversions of the elite inspire them to attack the morality that would otherwise help lower and middle class people improve their station in life.

Meanwhile, the fanatical puritan and luddite ideologies of the elite inspire them to restrict the resources and technologies that improve middle-class life and help people become more productive, which helps them earn more money and amass more capital.

Thus we have a culture that teaches young people to reject time-tested moral codes that would help them build better lives, instead making clumsy efforts to imitate the debauchery of the elites in ways that lead them to misery and ruin.

And our young people are taught to hate their own ambitions, to hate themselves for desiring lives that have big carbon footprints, to hate and distrust everything that could bring them prosperity and narrow the gap between their lifestyles and those of the elite.

Take a broad look at pop culture, political culture, and increasingly corporate culture as we head into 2021. Almost every bit of it has been crafted to make middle class people abandon their ambitions and program their children to fail... making Mount Olympus ever higher.

And then the political elite will demand even more control over our lives, to "fix" the ever-widening "inequality" gap their own policies and cultural programming made worse!

It's no wonder that some who dwell on the highest slopes of Mount Olympus are tempted to go even further, to indulge in dark appetites that would land lesser men in jail - a temptation that seems especially acute for male members of the extreme upper class.

They reach for the fruit that no other hand could pick, to remind one another that they are gods, even while loudly posturing as champions of socialism, feminism, and the Little Guy. The difference between what they DO and what they SAY is part of the rush.

17 There is a very good Quillette article about this. Veblen had his theory of the leisure class, that they signalled through conspicuous consumption - expensive and flashy goods. Today, the elite traffic in luxury beliefs to signal their status - like the trans supremacy movement.

34 Thus we have a culture that teaches young people to reject time-tested moral codes that would help them build better lives

There was a right-wing sociology journal years ago (back when there were right-wing sociology journals), which noted that if a young woman did three things:

1) graduate from high school
2) didn't get pregnant in high school, and
3) waited until she was married to have a kid,

her chances of living in poverty were approximately zero.

That was it.

Of course, left-wing governments want dependency, so they do everything possible to discourage young women from doing those three things.

Thing is, is it enough to reach the tipping point, and considering the hard globalist left's consolidation of institutions, can it ever be enough at this point? It disgusts me, but when they can rig the votes, indoctrinate the masses and write the rules, while they control the flow of cash, the exercise of power and determine the narrative, there doesn't seem to be much of anything that I can do. You can stand athwart the Tiananmen tanks, but in the end, it is but a symbolic action with no input on the actual outcome.

62 instead making clumsy efforts to imitate the debauchery of the elites

But the elites are very selective in their debauchery.

They are less likely to get divorced (no matter how they behave privately), and make sure that their kids get a first-rate education.

If the lower classes are dissolute, that's less competition for their kids.

One of the amusing things about the Hunter Biden document dump was that there was a succession of e-mails about Hunter's problems paying child support (big surprise), which included tuition for Hunter's kids at Sidwell Friends in Washington.

First things first.

92 Meanwhile, the fanatical puritan and luddite ideologies of the elite inspire them to restrict the resources and technologies that improve middle-class life and help people become more productive, which helps them earn more money and amass more capital.

It's a fascinating dynamic to observe - the whole pulling the ladder up after you phenomenon. It's not just this setting, but in businesses and social groups too. The people who reaped the benefit of mobility got theirs and now don't want anyone else to. It's like a little kid who would rather smash his or her toy than share it.

109 Someone once said that WWI was caused by too much nationalism and the American civil war was caused by not enough nationalism.

Before the civil war, Americans were divided by state. Meaning each person identified by their state, i.e. they were Virginians or Texans, or even Hoosiers. Their citizenship and loyalty were to the state rather than the country.

Now, Americans are no longer divided by state loyalties. They are divided by other categories. Race, sex, orientation, political affiliation, religious beliefs, even belief in science. But also by social class. The haves vs the have nots. The elites vs the proles. The wealthy, privileged, ruling class vs. anyone who doesn't agree with them.

These divisions were created deliberately. "A house divided cannot stand". The leftist, communists, progressives did this. They did it deliberately because they want that house to fall.

More people, and not necessarily people like us political junkies, are seeing what is being done to our country. They see the media lying about one political side and hiding any information about the other. They don't trust the media. They don't believe the old standard democrats good republican bad narrative. They understand that they are being lied to and manipulated. They voted for Trump in record numbers. And even more would have if the media hadn't hidden info about Biden family depravity and corruption. These people are just as outraged as we are. They want their voices heard while the democrats cheat to silence them.

The left lit the candle. We are sitting on a powder keg and if someone kicks that candle... It will be bloody.

This is the kind of thing I've been bleating myself senseless shouting for *two weeks*. There are ginormous practical problems with "let the state legislatures" decide and one of those problems is this. The state have already decided, and that decision was to hold a popular votes with (ostensibly) safeguards and fair procedures to ensure a legitimate vote. Some people did something so now SCOTUS has to decide what the remedy is under these circumstances.

It's not necessarily a 5-4 split. The 4 dissenters (in PA's 4-4) may have hoped that PA would do the right thing and that Biden would win easily (i.e., legitimately obtain more votes than Trump despite additional shenanigans). When it turns out they were suckered by the "polls" as much as everyone but the Horde, it may not end up being 5-4; the 4 vote concurrence basically stating that Dems and NT should try again, without cheating, in 2024.

He might be the single one of them who seems to have some logical consistency seep into his viewpoints at times, even if I am almost diametrically opposed to the underpinning foundation, I can respect that he does not automatically sway with the wind of conventional wisdom like the rest. That is not to say that he lacks an immensely punchable face or doesn't radiate an aura of utter contempt for the average person at all times. That is not true. The current terms of these people run until January (at the very least). If the local vote is as fraudulent as the presidential race, I am betting the courts will intervene. If they local races are not frauded up, then that part of the election can be certified separately.

I know that, but you have to remember that politicians are cowards by nature. The legislators are terrified that either way they're going to get the blame. The whole point of elections was to give them an out by shifting responsibility to the electorate. "We didn't choose to give the electoral votes to Biden, it was the voters!"

186 Privileged elites always want to assert their status by indulging in
pleasures denied to the lower classes. This often leads them into
immoral, deranged, and even criminal behavior. They're desperate to
flaunt their power by doing what lesser folk are forbidden to do.

Let me stop you right there, Buck. Let's get all these words right.

Privilege has nothing to do with being a scold. And plenty of folks love to scold. They'll scold over pronouns now, or a mask - but they'll also scold over that hat you left on while eating your own food at your own table. They'll scold over White and Labor Day. That last one is important. Making up shit ot scold about is a time honored tradition.

Asserting your dominance, via scolding, is no monopoly of the Left or the Rich. It is a stronger province of the NorthEast - and more lately the West Coast - but the SouthEast is only lacking in the trend because religion is on the down-slope. Back in the day, Religion was a means to status in Southern towns both rich and poor. Scolding crosses all class, religious, and political lines. It must - scolding is how some make themselves feel better by bitching at others without personal consequence. Kinda' like looking down their nose at anyone that doesn't wear a sport coat when going to the airport.

We are living in the Era of the Scold. It's as simple as that. As simple as the scold that can tell you to just don't be a dick and give the girl at the door your bona fides. That's got nothing to do with covid - and everything to do with Apartment Patty. Which - back in her day not very long ago at all - was another power play by the usual scolds.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at November 27, 2020 05:57 PM (WkPC9)

199 20 years ago, the Supreme Court left open the question as to whether the courts and the county election boards could change the counting manner and deadlines set by the FL legislature.

The 9-0 manner in which they told the FL supreme court, who had said that they could, to go back and address Article II tells how they intended to rule.

PA has gone far beyond what the judges and county boards did in FL.
They completely rewrote election law. Which, 20 years ago, the supreme court noted was the sole, plenary power of the legislature.

Part one will be a 7-2 decision-- the law must be followed as written by the legislature.
Part two is where it gets 4-4, is the remedy:
1)throw out only the votes that were counted improperly, and, if unable to determine, assume they were counted properly.
Or
2) throw out all votes they cannot show were counted properly

#1 allows most illegal votes mixed with legal votes to be counted; this is the liberal solution
#2 throws out the whole batch; I don't know which of the 4 are here.

One Justice is going to decide.

Team Trump, I'm sure, has gamed this out.
#1 is the easy, lazy, do-nothing but look tough type of decision we would expect. It pretends to uphold the law but guts it in practice.
#2 is the harsh remedy that is the only possible way to prevent fraud, because it punishes those who commit the fraud now.

PS: The district court and the 3rd Circuit are playing a cute game with the Supreme Court. They're trying to get the case tossed under discretionary review standard, saying the evidence is insufficient to show fraud. A discretion decision much harder to overcome on appeal.
But the 3rd might have gone to far in their zeal, by tossing in that Trump had not only no evidence, he also failed to make a claim, well, that's a matter of law, and a de novo review.

203 This treats as a general rule, things that are contingent to our time. If you look at the elites who ran America from JFK to GHWB, you find something rather different. I am not enamored of their competence, but it cannot be denied that they

(a) Actually believed they had a duty to serve, especially in the military. This has been standard, going back a long time. And is now dead.

(b) Knew enough to avoid conspicuous consumption. They clearly knew better than to rub their position in others' faces.

The Boomers killed that. But it's not the historic norm.

Again, I don't think much of the country's rulers from 1960 on, with a few exceptions. But the generalized rules cited above pretty much miss the mark.

There is one thing common, though. That is the belief in their intellectual superiority, and dates rather further back. It's a Prog thing, and was always unjustified.

Of course he is - from the other side of the table. That's the point. The "elite class" is scolding. They're discussing a set of values that they believe are "right". They have no interest in seeing those beliefs succeed or fail in the marketplace of ideas. They've simply said "this is how it must be" - without any real world test.

The exact same as those people that loved to scold about "take your cap off" at the dinner table. The guy that made your meal wore a paper hat. That cap keeps hair off the table. Yet - more often than not - some moral busybody always wanted to say "take your hat off" - even from the other side of the restaurant.

What Buck describes is EXACTLY the Pavlovian response of the busy-body. And that personality type crosses all political, gender, and economic boundaries. Scolds occupy all classes.

Yes, and when all of the Philly, Chester, and Shitsburg votes are tossed, the blame lies solely on the election commissioners who couldn't be bothered to even fake a legitimate count.

217 (a) Actually believed they had a duty to serve, especially in the military.

Posted by: Eeyore at November 27, 2020 05:59 PM (7X3UV)

There was an article about this recently which argued that the rise of the "meritocracy" killed it, because the people who were successful assumed that they were morally superior because they had obviously risen by their own hard work. A lot of the old traditions of elite behavior were based on the idea that you were often the beneficiary of good fortune beyond your control, and that your position was precarious, and so it was best not to flaunt one's wealth and status openly.

247 At some stage, the courts are going to be deferential to any state's mechanisms designed to cure illegal voting or "problems" and so far we're seeing this. The Trump team's efforts to suggest that they have exhausted those means or that they are unable or willing participants (ie the SOS's and election officials violated state laws) has fallen on deaf ears. As everyone predicted they would - courts hate to make rulings that other political bodies are built supposedly to make.

The SCOTUS is configured, at least currently, to think differently and seem to be pre-disposed to be favorable toward the argument that there has been the disenfranchisement or severe violation of Equal Protection and that these states have made that possible - it's a hope, I have. The cure they suggest is really a different matter and I can only hope it means returning the elector selection to the legislature of these states entirely...

257 The only blame goes to the election commissions who
ran elections contrary to the law. It would have been easy for philly to allow the poll watchers in, and make everything look up-and-up while the watchers walked around. By excluding them and playing games, theyran an illegal election. Those votes getting thrown out is their fault, not the legislature, not Trump.
---
If the residents of these precincts want their vote to count, they have--and had-- the opportunity to vote them out before the next election.

And Trump will--as he has-- point out that a few years ago, the courts threw out the Philly Democrat who was elected and installed the republican because of fraud--and the residents failed to take the lesson and clean out those who allowed the fraud.

Their continued, systemic and habitual fraud should not be rewarded this time either.

What I am saying is that the notion of "you may or may not do this or that" is not a judgement restricted to the Ruling Class. EVERY CLASS does this - when they have the power to do so. Because every social class enjoys exercising their power to enforce traditions and customs that are - often - not only subjective and arbitrary but also counter-productive.

Now - listen - that's all the Left is doing. Enforcing a set of standards - because that's what every dominant social group does. Their set just happens to be evil and capricious. I think - Hell, I know - that it's important to understand the distinction between what they do and why. What they are doing is no different than any other dominant social movement.

298 Look - I'm not against you here, when it comes to the Big P. That's a red line. Enough said. We are in lock step. OpSec.

Posted by: Always Be Lurking at November 27, 2020 06:14 PM (O3do3)

You're confusing social enforcement which exists in all times and all places with a different set of issues being addressed here. A commissar isn't the same as a bigwig at the politburo.

Some attempts to establish class barriers are also noted in the essay, but that differs from the decadence. Elites are not always this decadent, it's something that increases over time until a country collapses or the elites are purged. The Bidens and Clintons are good examples. The woke-scolds and social crusaders are useful minions but primarily the leadership doesn't give a damn about that.

To use an American example, the Prohibitionists are not the same as Wilson and FDR, they're merely shock troops.

331 My wife, who is the legal eagle of the family. tells me I am wrong on several points -

1. firstly - it is the state SOS and governors and election officials violation of their own state election laws that violates the Equal Protection Clause - ie it makes certain voters more equal than others by bypassing the legislature that is given to the election by the Constitution - its not the election fraud in and of itself...that is a state matter.
2. Never the less, even though Trump's legal team thought that should make this a federal issue - the 3rd district did not feel the violations sited in the suit and the fraud resulting from those violations came to the point that only the Feds could offer a cure, that the states can handle it - but she agrees with me that this it pretty natural at the federal level for them to default to this and their reluctance to get involve in state matters when an out is available will always manifest itself.
3. The wifey disagrees with me that the SCOTUS will pick this up as a given - it will go to a few justices in the rotation to accept an appeal and if they do, it goes en banc but that is no given - I disagree, no one is going to punt the greatest decision in our life time to some 3rd district panel...
4. My wife thinks the equal protection clause will be rejected by the SCOTUS if picked up, even by the conservative Justices, because state election matters as per the Constitution are clearly within their right, and that Bush v Gore was decided along those lines as the voting in FL at the time of the decision clearly was in line with those state law. In other words - it differed to state laws as they existed.

I disagree, of course, I think the SCOTUS will decide for Trump v PA, MI and GA and remand the cure to those state legislatures to pick electors...I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight though.

337 @333...a certain modesty is an important feature of a healthy aristocracy. They know they were born into it, after all, and must justify their staus and power. We don't have an aristocracy, we have a meritocracy. Meritocracy is a misnomer, because true merit has very little to do with how staus and power is achieved in the USA. But "elites" think the've earned their status and power, so have no real reason to be modest about it. An unhealthy aristocracy forgets where it comes from, a meritocracy doesn't know where it comes from in thne first place.

345 OFF TOPIC, except not-so-much:

Regarding the Johns Hopkins University newsletter which scrubbed an article by Yanni Gu summarizing a study by Genevieve Briand. The item was dated 11/22 and titled A Closer Look at US Deaths Due to Covid-19 (in which she demonstrates that there are NO "excess deaths" from covid; the numbers of deaths listed as due to pneumonia and influenza dropped by about the same amount as the numbers of deaths attributed to covid). (The disappeared article can be found at the Wayback Machine.)

Wellll, I searched the JHU newsletter for her name and found three-plus-one items: thumbnails of 3 graphs used in the article, AND the following message from the Editors:
" Editor's Note: After The News-Letter published this article on Nov. 22, it was brought to our attention that our coverage of Genevieve Briand's presentation "COVID-19 Deaths: A Look at U.S. Data" has been used to support dangerous inaccuracies that minimize the impact of the pandemic. "

Get that? A researcher's data was used to support *BAD-THINK*, and so this analysis of publically-available data had to be suppressed.
