Quarantine Cafe: Bands You've Been Meaning to Get Into One of These Days Edition

The other day in a thread, Chris Cornell came up. I've heard forever that Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog were great, but for whatever reason, I just never bothered checking them out (apart from Black Hole Sun).

Are there any bands like that you've meant to listen to?

One band I've heard about forever -- my first punk girlfriend would play them, especially "Why Can't I Touch It?" -- was Buzzcocks. (No "The," apparently.)

I finally gave them a listen a year or two ago, and they're really good. They're categorized as punk, but they're a really poppy, harmonic kind of punk. They're more Monkees than Sex Pistols.

Below, four tracks you might like, and probably have heard. The first one is "What Do I Get?," which I'm pretty sure is/was being used in an ad campaign recently.

The second one, "Everybody's Happy Nowadays," was played over the credits in Shawn of the Dead (though the version played was a cover by Ash).

The last one, " Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've?)," I'm sure I've heard before without ever knowing what it was. I think it's my favorite.

What are your later-in-life discovered favorites? Which of their songs have Noob Appeal?

do they beat Golden earring?

"Golden Earring is a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as The Golden Earrings (the definite article was dropped in 1967, while the "s" was dropped in 1969).[1] They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs "Radar Love" in 1973, which went to number one on the Dutch charts, reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, and went to number thirteen on the United States charts,[1][2] "Twilight Zone" in 1982, and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984.[1] During their career they have had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts while releasing 25 studio albums.

The band's lineup consists of co-founders Rinus Gerritsen (bass and keyboards) and George Kooymans (vocals and guitar), along with Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute and saxophone), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums and percussion). All musicians in the present lineup of the band have been continuous members of the band since 1970, although other musicians have joined and left the band during the intervening years."

Saw him at the Fox Theater recently in ATL. I recently developed an obsession with Rory Gallagher, who is an Irish legend and one of the best rock guitarists of all time. Recommend Tattoo'd Lady, A Million Miles Away, and Bad Penny as good intro songs. I dare you not to get hooked on Rory! Another relatively unknown gem is JJ Cale, who wrote Cocaine and After Midnight, both covered by Eric Clapton. JJ was one of my favorites if not my all-time favorite. Got to see him once at Variety Playhouse in ATL.

111 Audioslave was great. It was rage against the machine band members plus Chris Cornell.
Around the same time they were popular, another good one is Alter Bridge. Similar concept, this time it was Creed with a different front man. Even before I knew that, I could tell from the guitar style it had to be the same guitarist. I was never indy Creed really but Alter Bridge was pretty good. Saw them live in Chicago once too

140 2 groups that you think sucks or just had one hit on the alt radio stations but actually has a ton of songs you know:

1. Highly Suspect
2. 21 pilots

first, highly suspect seems to change their game up a lot, their crazy lead singer has incredible vocalization. listen to the first minute of Canals...

https://youtu.be/hSWBb4KOF6s

before the song goes in either a good way or a bad way, depending on your point of view. I find that vocalization really awesome. not bad for a former cover band.

2. Everyone knows 21 pilots but damn they're good. I think most people think they're one hit wonders. but they've been making hits and have a fan base of "the kids" that fucking love them.

Posted by: Guy Mohawk at November 19, 2020 08:50 PM (r+sAi)

207 Damn Buzzcocks. That goes too far back. They were all the rage of the cool kids. I'm not a fan of Peter Shelley, but everybody at some point got "Homosapien" stuck in their heads. Weird ass video as you'd expect.

Back then I was more of an XTC/Furs/Numan/Ultravox/Cure type.

Now? I've got a shit-ton of bands I'm listening to thanks to Tidal and streaming. I never thought I'd do that, but since the ex still has my turntable and SACD/CD spinner and software, I've gotten onto the HD streaming bandwagon and love it.

Wobbler is fantastic(ish) for those who crave the old progressive rock. They've finally sort of gotten to their own sound, but still have a lot of Yes/Genesis baggage. Still, worth a listen. Their new album is pretty nifty (just got my limited edition vinyl that I might get to play someday).

On the progressive front, can't say enough good shit about Major Parkinson They started out sort of like an Oingo Boingo Gogol Bordello Mr. Bungle influenced band, but they've gotten really, really sophisticated, and the lyrics are stunning considering they're from Norway.

One new-ish band that I really dig is Amplifier. They're stoner rock with a twist. Highly recommend Trippin' With Doctor Faustus. I'm working my way back in their catalog. It's a bit hit or miss, but so far so good. This gets a lot of play.

There's a bunch of newer stoner/slacker rock, but these guys really do it for me.

For harder rock, try Haken Their new album Virus (coincidence) is pretty neat stuff. They sort of came from a heavy metal background, shifted to 70's prog sounds (one is a lost Gentle Giant song) to 80's prog back to super dense metal. Check it out.

Not remotely new, except their new album A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip - I think it's awesome that Sparks after 50 years is still rocking. Life affirming stuff.

298 Hello Horde! I'm technically still at work so I can't stay, but I keep wanting to get one of these Music Threads.

I've been searching out this music for a few years now, so I'm not really staying with the spirit of the thread, but it's an Ace thread so whatever. My new thing is a hipsterish pseudo-pretentious genre called "Post Metal". No vocals, just crunchy guitars and sweet riffs. It's like making songs out of the middle parts of all the other good metal songs.

If you're not into crunchy guitars and sweet riffs, you can probably pass this by.

Listening instructions: Put it on in the background while you're doing something else and try to forget about it. If you listen to Post Metal directly, you'll get frustrated waiting for the song to Do Something. If you do manage to forget about it, then a few minutes later you'll look up from what you're doing and realize that these are some really sweet riffs.

Start here, "Ephemeral":
https://pelicansl.bandcamp.com/track/ephemeral-2

If that one works, try a stronger form, "Creeper":
https://pelicansl.bandcamp.com/track/the-creeper

Something more condensed, "Lost in the Headlights":
https://pelican.bandcamp.com/track/lost-in-the-headlights

308 I had always meant to start listening to GWAR as it seemed pretty much my niche. Just started recently playing them as WFH music to get me through the day.

I'm probably not getting the full treatment that I'd get from their huge stage show days. A friend told me he went to a concert, was devoured by a huge space monster on stage, and then mostly raped by a bunch of girl groupies in a giant pit. His was a fond memory. Listening to GWAR now I hear a lot of similarity with White Zombie with tie-ins to what was probably their stage show.

311 I got interested in '80s alternative music (New Wave? I don't know the judging criteria) a few years ago when a former co-worker put KROQ on his computer. Bands whose names I had heard but whose music I hadn't.

The hell of it is. those bands were around during my college years, I just didn't stretch myself. The B52s did so much more than "Love Shack"! Radio won't play those other tunes, however.

So I'm raiding the library for CDs of those bands.

I'm also searching out blues and swing from before I was born. Oh, and zydeco -- I like fast music.

In addition, I'm hunting for CDs of radio programs.

The only time that I bring live radio into my car now is when the weather is bad.

LOL, Styx was loved in the bay area, they won the battle of the bands back when. I'm embarrassed to say I still have a couple of their LP's, but it's because the chicks dug it. I don't think I've played any since 1979.

I'm the same with Journey. They actually used to play right around my neck of the woods in Marin before they signed a label - they got screwed and it took them like 2 years because of some sort of contractual fuck up. I tried, but just meh. Saw them a few times, the worst was in 1977 when they had just signed Steve Perry.

They probably would have been not too bad if they hadn't been followed by EL&P. I also think that Greg was drunk, because damn. His fingers were getting tangled in the strings.

I think it is a good bet that SCOTUS nullifies all mail in ballots in PA that were not submitted under the old rules. I think we need to keep pressure on the legislatures in GA, AZ, MI and WI to address the fraud and judicial rule changes in those states. I think the mail in votes are very attack vulnerable.

Honestly, I am hoping for a very broad SCOTUS decision that declares all mail-in vote changes to be a violation of due process and the guarantee of a Republican form of government.

In 1990 I was flying out to Hawaii, back when you had to go to Oahu first and catch a puddle jumper elsewhere.

Guy sitting next to me seemed nice enough, kinda grungey looking had the isle seat and was talking with apparent friends sort of scattered in the same area.

Not sure how we were talking, mostly talked about restaurants and fishing boats and shit. I said I was a designer and photographer, and he said he sang in a band and they were about done, looking forward to some R&R. I didn't even ask the band name I don't think.

Picking up the luggage, I see all these instrument cases and amp boxes and shit that said "Soundgarden" all over. I thought, gee, that's cool, I've heard of them.

I don't think Badmotofinger was out yet, or if it was I didn't know about it. Seems it was Chris Cornell I was sitting next to. LOL.

That recount was total BS and you all need to be calling Kemp and legislators in GA demanding a special session. Even if the rules of the recount were not so laughable (1 monitor for 10 counting tables) the consent decree would have made the recount a joke. Raffesperger wrote the rules of the recount sent them out in the middle of the night and then went into "lockdown" because his "wife" supposedly tested positive for Kung Flu.

Benefit of having a job where you can work from home. You aren't looking at losing your job, pay or maybe home.

But people who don't have that luxury are selfish for not locking down and stapling a mask to their face.

608 330 I'll have to check out Black Country Communion.

That's Glenn Hughes on bass & vocals - who was in Deep Purple at the same time as David Coverdale (he sang, e.g., the bridge on "Burn").

Before Deep Purple he was in a band called Trapeze, with future Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland. Two great hard rock songs of theirs were "Way Back To The Bone" and "Medusa," the latter of which was very Black-Sabbathy and a little proto-Soundgarden-y (think "Outshined," with a slow, heavy riff and a slightly weird rhythm).

On Black Country Communion's first album, they re-made Trapeze's "Medusa" with a heavier, more modern guitar sound. Kicked all kinds of ass.

SRV still blows my mind. In my last band we played a credible version of Pride and Joy. All that did was make my thank God for SRV.

Today, Joe Bonamassa blows my mind. Anytime I am within 500 to 1000 miles of him playing I am in the car. I had a near, scratch that, had a religious experience hearing him and the equally mind blowing band play at Red Rocks. His is at the peak of his skills right now and that band is truly one of the greatest bands ever - on part with Miles Davis, Satchmo, Basie to name a few. Having seem them play well over a dozen times only reinforces this perspective.

A couple others are Buddy Miller and Sonny Landreth. Their skills are utterly different than SRV and Bonamassa but they remarkable. Really remarkable. Hearing them live is sublime.

Going off in a different direction Pokey LaFarge and JD McPherson are killer song writers with wicked bands. These are fairly young bands that are building their catalog. The song writing and musicianship are utterly American and reminds you like a bat in the face the greatness of American music.

Luckily, I was in and around NYC then and got to see a ton of shows. Thurston and Lee had it going on.

The most interesting pair of guitar pickers in music. To me anyways. Had a chance to meet Steve Shelley at BB King's blues joint in Nashville after a show in 2009. Thurston was there too, although we never spoke. Along with my days on Dead tour, SY was a band I would travel incredible distances to see, no matter the obstacle. Seeing them in late 80s NY mustve been a hoot for you!!

693 It's so easy now to hear any band that you hear about with youtube and such, but back in the day I'd read about all kinds of bands in music magazines like Alternative Press or SPIN, but you had no way to hear a fraction of the bands that sounded like you might be interested in, so there were hundreds of bands that always sounded intriguing that you never could really hear because you had to either buy the music, have a friend buy it, or call a college radio station DJ to play a song.

It seems that now I'll get obsessed with about one song a year from back in the day that I didn't really listen to.

The last few of these have been the Grateful Dead's "Eyes of the World" (especially the version from Giants Stadium in '91 with Bruce Hornsby iirc), "Sail On" by the Commodores (starts country, goes r&b, ends latin), and "Jokerman" by Bob Dylan.

695 648 Today, Joe Bonamassa blows my mind. Anytime I am within 500 to 1000 miles of him playing I am in the car. I had a near, scratch that, had a religious experience hearing him and the equally mind blowing band play at Red Rocks.

I would love love to see him in concert.

---

When you listen to the recordings what you don't grasp is what they pull off on stage is just them - zero electronic effects and stuff - it is staggering. When you listen deep into the band you will find the music is highly arranged until it isn't - they interplay between the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards is a friggin free for all - it is breath taking.

One time I got myself smack at the front of the stage surrounded by a bunch of other lunatics that knew his catalog inside and out. My hands are still swollen from high fiving each other as we heard Bonamassa rip on Jeff Beck for a while and then slide into some Clapton, then Muddy Waters and the take off into the ether with his own guitar voice.

That band is glorious. Sell blood and go see him.

697 661 Pokey LaFarge and JD McPherson are killer song writers with wicked bands. These are fairly young bands that are building their catalog. The song writing and musicianship are utterly American and reminds you like a bat in the face the greatness of American music.

Fuck Me Up was my first exposure to Pokey LaFarge, and it's not that good. But yeah, pretty good past that.

---

I got see his band live in a small brewery in Santa Fe about 18 months ago - if there were 250 people there I would be stunned. The point of that is you could be up close and experience as much as hear what was happening on stage. What you quickly understand is this band is rock solid and form the perfect background to Pokey's pitch perfect singing. It is in that context you really grasp what clever songs he writes and how excellent the arrangements are.

TPBBB band is gem's gem. It was a musicians band and in the mid 60s where playing dead credible, even great blues. I still listen to them all these decades later.

Another great harp player is Kim Wilson. As much as I love great recordings I live for hearing these musician's bands play live. I heard Kim Wilson one night in club that held maybe 40 people, it was a gift from God. With him was Larry Taylor, Barrelhouse Chuck, Kirk Fletcher, and Richard Innes. In total there was about 200+ years of blues gigging happening. In my minds eye that night was what TPBBB would have sound like in their prime. It took me about a month to calm down.

Might be my favorite cover of "Killing Floor" by anyone.

Couple of people upthread mentioned Junior Brown, who is flat out hell on wheels (and who used to teach guitar -- maybe still does -- at a college in Missouri or someplace). Check out his cover of "Sugarfoot Rag," or his "409" with the Beach Boys. I also started listening to Dale Watson about the same time I got into Junior Brown -- really good stuff.
