An interesting Saturday night tune.............. The ONT Is Always Looking Out For You TM Milk, it does a drink good. Putting milk in a cocktail either sounds gross or way too fancy to pull off at home. But it’s delicious — and far easier to make than you’d think I can still remember the night I discovered milk punch. It happened six years ago, when I stumbled into a luxurious-looking restaurant in Downtown Los Angeles — the kind of place that has extravagant leather banquettes, 1920s chandeliers and diners in black bandage dresses. Flipping through the (leather-bound) menu in an awkward corner of the crowded bar, I spotted it: “English Milk Punch,” featuring ingredients like funky Smith & Cross rum, bourbon, green tea, tropical fruit and, strangest of all, something called a “milk clarification.” If I had been more sober, I probably would’ve asked about this unseemly combination of tastes. But I wasn’t, so I stuck my hand up and blurted it out. Maybe I should move to the Moon. Nah, just kidding Verizon. The moon will soon have cell service NASA and Nokia plan to install it in 2022. If NASA’s Artemis program succeeds in returning humans to the moon in 2024, the astronauts may have the option of tweeting their first words before leaving their first footprints. Last week, the US space agency announced a $14.1 million contract with the telecommunications company Nokia to build an LTE cellular network on the moon, one of 15 NASA grants awarded this year to private companies to boost the development of new space technologies. The hardware could touch down in late 2022 and would not need human hands for deployment or configuration, according to Nokia. The network would provide a speedy connection to any devices within range of a base station. When we think of Deadheads, we tend to think of genteel hippies preaching peace and love. But as a new podcast called Dead and Gone points out, there’s an underlying darkness at play thanks to the fact that a surprising number of Grateful Dead fans have tragically disappeared from shows by the band or even wound up murdered over the years. Hosted by Jake Brennan and Payne Lindsey, the podcast explores some of the many unsolved mysteries related to Deadheads, as well as offering a broader look at how, as The Daily Beast puts it, “susceptible Deadheads, in their free-wheeling nature, have been to predation.” Once upon a time, there was a free lunch. To Evade Pre-Prohibition Drinking Laws, New Yorkers Created the World’s Worst Sandwich. It was everywhere at the turn of the 20th century. It was also inedible. NEAR THE END OF THE 19th century, New Yorkers out for a drink partook in one of the more unusual rituals in the annals of hospitality. When they ordered an ale or whisky, the waiter or bartender would bring it out with a sandwich. Generally speaking, the sandwich was not edible. It was “an old desiccated ruin of dust-laden bread and mummified ham or cheese,” wrote the playwright Eugene O’Neill. Other times it was made of rubber. Bar staff would commonly take the sandwich back seconds after it had arrived, pair it with the next beverage order, and whisk it over to another patron’s table. Some sandwiches were kept in circulation for a week or more. Bar owners insisted on this bizarre charade to avoid breaking the law—specifically, the excise law of 1896, which restricted how and when drinks could be served in New York State. The so-called Raines Law was a combination of good intentions, unstated prejudices, and unforeseen consequences, among them the comically unsavory Raines sandwich. Born on this day: 24 Oct 1936 On this day: 24 Oct 2018 Talk about two people who should not have reproduced. Genius Award Winners. A Swiss couple has named their baby daughter Twifia after Internet start-up Twifi and won themselves 18 years of free wi-fi internet. The young couple responded to a Facebook ad from Twifi, a Swiss Internet provider, which dared parents to name their newborn Twifus (if it was a boy) or Twifia (if it was a girl) in exchange for 18 years of free internet. The parents, aged 30 and 35, ultimately decided that Twifia wasn’t that bad of a name, and the thought of getting free internet for 18 years and putting that money in a savings account for their daughter was appealing. So after thinking it over, they decided to make it official, putting down ‘Twifia’ as their daughter’s middle name on her birth certificate. Of course dog is mankind's best friend. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day. A drunk woman came home from a long and obviously at least somewhat successful night out and waiting for her was her loyal dog, who had to, as it turns out, become her impromptu caretaker as well. So, there wasn't a riot in Portland last night, but they did have a demonstration in front of a house being foreclosed. (A black family had owned the house for decades, free and clear, did some financial finagling and borrowed money against the house, and is now being foreclosed on.)
One of the people handing out free marijuana at the demonstration (welcome to Portland), found out that xim/xer's "partner" had been diagnosed with CCP virus, and warned Portland Antifa twitter that they needed to get tested. (The person begged for money for groceries while they were in quarantine, of course.) Well and good. However, one of the people responding to this tweet said: "The FIRST question they asked me when I got tested was "have you been to a protest in the past two weeks"". Well, isn't that interesting. There has not been a whisper in the local media that these protests have contributed to the spread of CCP virus, and the Oregon public health bureaucracy would never admit to it, of course, but apparently transmission at protests is happening frequently enough that at least one clinic in Portland is asking about it. Transmission outdoors is not a thing.
Almost everyone in the "riot" demographic has more to fear from flu than from C19 (i.e., not much). BUT NONE OF THIS MATTERS, DOUBLY SO, BECAUSE WE CANNOT CONTROL OR CONTAIN A PREVALENT VIRUS AND ARE *STILL* PROVING HOW DAMAGING AND STUPID IT IS TO TRY. The problem is not "hypocrisy" (the weakest and dumbest issue evuh), the problem is not "double standards". The problem is that the entire framework is erroneous, and adopting it to make a point is as stupid as promoting it in the first place. Only 5 months late, at last, the big guy (no, the other one) has finally at least said "cases don't matter" - I wonder if Atlas and he have coordinated on a way to gradually walk Trump into talking reality, and not disastrous unscientific C19 Task Force-speak, as part of a plan to put things back on the rails. For every healthy person under 50 (really, more like 65 or 70), "living with COVID" means ..... living like they've lived their entire lives, with flu. Except that for those under 50, it's a fraction of flu, and for those under 25, it's a freak event (a medically serious case).
The 1957 flu had a higher death toll (per capita) than this will end up having (and if a more serious death count is done, a significantly higher toll). While the Hunter stuff is incriminating, what will bring it all down is the newly released audio of Joe telling the Ukraine dude to make sure Ukraine doesn't ask Trump for money to cover their economic collapse because he will want to know the details. Instead pressure the powers that be to get the money from the IMF. There's more too. So Hunter is a threatening distraction for the Biden Crime Family, DNC and Deep State. This is going to be mindboggling corruption revealed.

Yet optimism is in order, because day by day democracy is proving itself to be a not-at-all-fragile flower. From Stettin on the Baltic to Varna on the Black Sea, the regimes planted by totalitarianism have had more than 30 years to establish their legitimacy. But none - not one regime - has yet been able to risk free elections. Regimes planted by bayonets do not take root. - Ronald Reagan Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 24, 2020 10:55 PM (5p7BC) 197
Schweizer and Tyrmand (they have the Cooney emails) are doing a big picture Biden scandal piece in the NYPost tomorrow. Should be helpful.
There is no coherence to the Biden scandal(s) frenzy. Having a focus (on the hard evidence of financial impropriety, not Hunter's exploits) might be the only way to push the story into some part of the public consciousness. We are seeing the full, true blooming of an American political season with literally no press - i.e., the "press" acting entirely as agents and PR ops for one side, far more than ever in modern history. Two self-described 'cannibals' who offered their services online as a 'eunuch maker' and kept body parts in a refrigerator removed the testicles of a 28-year-old Virginia resident as part of an illegally conducted gender reassignment surgery, Oklahoma police said. Bob Lee Allen (seen above with the white beard), 53, and his homosexual partner, Thomas Evans Gates, 42, were arrested by Le Flore County Sheriff's deputies and charged on Wednesday with conspiracy to commit unlicensed surgery, performing unlicensed surgery, maiming and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Dave in Fla: What's your take on the American Thinker article titled - Mail In Voting Will Not Prevent a Trump Victory?
Posted by: NALNAMSAM ----------- I haven't read it, but I agree with the construct. CBD sidebared something I wrote about it almost a month ago. There are limits to how much cheating you can do with mail in ballots because it is hard to do without an organized cheating operation (there aren't many Philly organizations out there) and stealing votes is beaten by in person voting. If someone votes for you, and you vote on election day, your fake vote is cancelled and they new vote is counted. Most of the late voting schemes got overturned in the courts, so really only PA is out there as a potential for cheating. But the numbers I have seen say that if Trump wins PA by 1% or more, they can't steal it. Philly could maybe steal 100K votes at a top end, but that wouldn't be enough. The interesting fact I have learned the last few weeks is that Philly isn't able to swing an election on its own. They don't have enough votes. Back in the 70's, I worked as a lowly storeroom clerk in a biochemistry department at a university here in Illinois.
It turned out there was a network of brewers and liqueur makers in the laboratories. One of the more interesting recipes to come my way was "Milk Liqueur". One filled a 5 gallon glass carboy with several pounds of citrus fruits - in my case oranges - vanilla beans, sugar and a good portion of safe to consume ethyl alcohol (readily available in any good lab storeroom), and, of course milk! You shake vigorously every day at least once.. Over time, the alcohol and milk break up the citrus pulp and rind.. at the end of two weeks or more, strain.. another advantage of doing this in a lab environment is the availability of vacuum and filter flasks. In the end, you get a pure golden liqueur that is divine. Here's a recipe using vodka.. https://tinyurl.com/y5jkquhj Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at October 24, 2020 11:15 PM (CjFDo) 257

China's Elite-Capture Strategy & The Bidens
And US banks pay for it. "Over a seven year period between 2006 and 2013, JPMorgan hired about a hundred interns and full time employees at the request of government officials in China and Asia as part of its efforts to build banking relationships in the fast-growing region. The hiring, dubbed internally as a "Sons & Daughters Program," enabled JPMorgan to win business that generated $100 million in revenues for the bank. But now America's largest bank by assets is set to pay a $264 million fine to settle claims that its hiring violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)."-Forbes Posted by: Cognizant Miklos at October 24, 2020 11:18 PM (QzkSJ) 267

Posted by: Farmer Bob ------------- Not from a cheating perspective, but you are already seeing this effect in Florida. I am waiting to see how the next 2 weekends go, but Democrat early vote is way below where it needs to be. My rough calculation earlier today is that Dems are 900K votes behind the GOP in meeting early vote targets. If the Dems don't get a big pile of voters to the polls this weekend, then they are in big trouble. One of the problems the Dems have with the cheating operations is they got really good at it and relied on it too heavily. People forget that Philly "turned out" record vote totals for Hillary in 2016. They had a very effective machine going in the last election. But it wasn't enough. So anything that makes their usual tricks harder will absolutely affect their vote totals in places like Philly. Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 24, 2020 11:28 PM (5p7BC) 294

Kind of a long story, but back before the smoking ban, Mrs. Old Blue and I used to frequent an Old Chicago in our neighborhood fairly often, and many of the staff knew us well. I was a good tipper. So, one really cold January evening we were on our way home from a bowling tournament and decided to stop there and eat before we went home. The only seating to be had was at the bar so we settled in, we both knew already what we wanted to eat so when the bartender came over we gave him our order and he asked what we would like to drink. I ordered my usual beer, but Mrs. Old Blue didn't quite know. She wanted something warm because she was chilly, so I suggested a hot chocolate and schnapps. Sounds good, she says, so the bartender brings her one over. That drink didn't last five minutes, so she orders another one. It didn't last very much longer. Did I mention that Mrs. Old Blue doesn't drink? Anywho, after Mrs. Old Blue chugs down the second drink, she turns to me and says "I'm not feeling too well." I call the bartender over and ask him what did he put in the hot chocolate and schnapps. He looks at me and says "Oh, because it's you guys, I gave her the good stuff. The hundred proof schnapps." I told him to make the order to go, because did I mention that Mrs. Old Blue doesn't drink? I poured her into the van, took her home, put her to bed and had to eat my calzone all by my lonesome watching reruns of Law and Order. Quick question: if the city in which you live (Springfield IL, pop. about 115,000) has avoided any rioting or looting to date, has had generally low or mediocre turnout for BLM events and protest marches, and the local BLM chapter seems to be more focused on "do gooder" activities like charity collections, GOTV drives, and promoting black businesses than on any kind of in-person demonstrations, does that mean our chances of significant civil unrest on or after election day are lower than they would be elsewhere? Assuming, of course, that nothing big like a police involved shooting (God forbid) happens in the interim. There is not any significant anti-police sentiment around here that I can see, and even the local BLM takes part in events WITH them and says good things about them (go figure).
There are more Biden signs around town than I would care to see, but the county/metro area went for Trump about 55-45 last time around. I also don't see or hear any signs of Antifa activity here although there are some scattered Antifa types posting stuff on Facebook in other cities within a 1-2 hr drive (Champaign, Decatur, Peoria). I'm trying to decide if we should preemptively get out of Dodge on Election Day (we already voted) or if that's really necessary. I have Election Day off as a State holiday but I would have to be back at work the next morning. Posted by: Secret Square at October 24, 2020 11:41 PM (9WuX0) 327

Aside from the demographic changes, election law has had a major impact in turning out blue votes. Jungle primaries resulting in D vs D races means rich coastal liberals are dumping money into other races across CA, some House candidates were spending well over 20 million on their campaigns. Also ballot harvesting and permanent vote by mail is a thing. I have a friend from Chicagoland. I'm trying to decide if we should preemptively get out of Dodge on Election Day (we already voted) or if that's really necessary. I have Election Day off as a State holiday but I would have to be back at work the next morning. Posted by: Secret Square at October 24, 2020 11:41 PM (9WuX0) -------------------------------- Hmmm, given how close you are to Champaign, I would think all the action would be there and not in Springfield. Certainly the 6-county area of Chicago and its suburbs is going to be sporty if the Antifa/BLM/Communists don't get their way. But I don't know, these people are determined to burn the world down if they lose, and they are threatening people to vote BLUE or else. By their threats, it seems like we are facing Philly in 2008, when the New Black Panthers took over polling places and threatened voters. Charges filed by Bush administration, immediately tossed out by Barky & Holder. Trump has to win. Or it really will be or else. Posted by: Boots at October 25, 2020 12:18 AM (oGBso) 431

She had been hesitant about putting one out and sure enough it was stolen in less than 12 hours. I don't expect Trump will take VA but it might not be the walkover Team Biden expects. The only reply I've seen so far is a post chiding her for posting an "inappropriate" rant on NextDoor.

Nice ending to TB-LA.
2 outs bottom 9th, LA 7, TB 6, first and second after a walk Phillips, sub 200 hitter (defensive replacement), not even on NLCS squad, gets single to short center, Bellinger makes Little League style blooper error in picking it up, one run scores, second run (Arozarena) should make it easily after the error, trips over own feet halfway home, but catcher misses ball, and Arozarena reverses course and scores winning run (also: home plate umpire was looking elsewhere, when catcher Smith missed it, it deflected off him, if pitcher was right there backing up, might have made a difference) (for that matter: no idea why Phillips didn't stop at 1st, his run can never matter) Posted by: WS G4, relievers suck at October 25, 2020 12:28 AM (BBWrU) 451

I don't believe that for a second. One thing: with many of the youths not in college right now because of Wuflu, the college vote won't be as high. Secondly, they're not going to turn out to vote for Grandpa Joe. The only time the youth vote made a difference was in 2008 - and they were voting for someone, not against. Also, only one error on the final play, according to the official scorer (currently).
To me, have to give an error to Smith (for missing the "easy" catch), but also Muncy threw it to the wrong side, influencing Smith who was trying to quickly drag the tag over from the first-base side (not knowing Arozarena had stopped). Jansen was apologetic for not backing up the plate, but even if he were, the slight deflection off the umpire would have scuppered it. I didn't watch baseball once I heard that mlb had gone in on BLM. And I'm a huge baseball fan. But from what I heard from people who were still watching, the Brewers did not go all social justice. There was no BLM on the pitcher's mound in Milwaukee and the announcers and players said nothing about it. I think they did in the really woke cities like San Fran and LA and NY, but I would be surprised to hear that Cincinnati or Cleveland or Phoenix went all in on that shit. 472 Dave in Fla -
Question: MSNBC and some other outlets are now pimping stories that show the 'youth vote' is quadruple what it was at this point 4 years go, and of course it's 70-80% Dem. Do you agree with what they are saying? Are you concerned with it? Thanks. Posted by: Forheremenaremen at October 25, 2020 12:42 AM (pmRSz) They're being intentionally obtuse. In Texas the numbers they were touting for 18-39 yr olds was something like 80ish% higher than 2016. However, the percentage of 18-39 yr olds in Texas that have voted early is only 11%, compared to 13ish% in 2016. So no, the youth turnout in Texas is not higher than 2016 (at this point). If they were to actually show the percentage of the 18-29 yr olds who have voted early in each state it would tell a different story, which is why they went with the "flashy" numbers. Just to stoke a little extra COVID panic, some factoids.
Sweden took pretty minimal steps to "fight" the virus. September was the month with the fewest deaths in Sweden, in history (records go back to mid-19th century). 2020 will almost surely be on the lowest "death years" in Swedish history, and definitely will be among lowest of the last 25. It's also likely their death count, like ours, is substantially inflated by classification of cause of death (a typical problem involving any disease that mostly affects the unhealthy). Hmmm. Now that doesn't seem to justify much panic, does it? Not very good at this. Guess that CDC gig is right out. Posted by: rhomboid at October 25, 2020 01:40 AM (OTzUX) 553

@506...why in the world Jansen came inside on the 26th man on the roster/pinch runner hitting under .200 and with only 2 abs in the playoffs, both Ks, on a 1-2 count after just getting a call on the outside corner, and the hitter hadn't swung yet, is beyond all reason. Go outside again, moron. There are two outs, and the last thing this guy wants to do is be the last out on 3 called strikes. He was swinging at literally anything there. Why on earth put one in the fucking strike zone? I don't understand the way the game is played sometimes. This was elementary, and the LA Dodgers fucked it up completely. Nurse, that WAS a hell of a ballgame, I am happy for the Rays. I think that pollsters are counting the youth vote as a single block of young radicals and I think that they are quite wrong in believing that. What happened to Nick Sandman has resonated with a different group of young people in this country. I hope that there is a discernable showing at the polls by youths who are sick and tired of being bullied by the left. That's about all, just a random collection of thoughts, and I hope that Insom had a great experience at the MoMe (should he be on pre-natal vitamins already?).

For those worried about the youth vote:
In PA, the youth vote -- which is categorized as 18-29(!) -- has increased from ~24k to ~140k. Huge right? 5.8 times what it was in 2016. Oh noes! But wait, what about the senior vote? Well it has also increased. From ~69k to ~639k. 9.3 times what it was in 2016, and 9.3 times a larger number. Similar, though less dramatic, deal in FL: FL: 18-29 in 2016: ~242k, in 2020: ~359k FL: 65+ in 2016: ~1,567k, in 2020: ~2,169k Also, keep in mind that the Dem refrain has been that COVID will kill you if you go outside. Survey after survey has shown that Dems are vastly more afraid of going out to crowded locations -- like, say, polling places -- than Reps. As a result, the left has been pushing mail-in voting hard. The right, on the other hand, has been saying "mail in is untrustworthy!" And right leaning folks are a lot less worried about COVID. Trump should win election day voters pretty handily. Right now, we are in a pretty decent position, though the election is not yet won. P.S. If the pro-Biden polls were actually correct, he should have a much larger lead in early voting as Dems are significantly more likely to say they have already voted. Ergo, we already know the polls are not correct. P.P.S. Somewhere between 1% and 3% of the mail-in ballots will likely be tossed as spoilt ballots. Dems are more likely to have spoilt ballots (because they are idiots) than Reps. Posted by: Seldom at October 25, 2020 01:55 AM (gMxF9) 576

Braenyard - indeed - the "dry tinder" hypothesis.
There's a guy who was working on a pretty detailed and comprehensive test of that hypothesis, using data from all over Europe, need to see if he finally published it. Basically, he and others noted (pretty quickly) that one consistent "predictor" or correlation with the higher fatality rates in European countries were the fatality rates from the prior two influenza seasons. Mild prior seasons = higher C19 deaths, more severe seasons = lower C19 numbers. Seems obvious. But he was going to try to document it in detail. For those open to a concise and non-technical discussion from a British doc in Sweden (I think), this article is quite good: https://preview.tinyurl.com/y59tpmzs Among the interesting context/perspective building elements he brings in - "common colds" were implicated in more deaths among the frail elderly than was influenza, in one study from a few years ago. Yeah, "systemic racism" as a "public health emergency" has to be my favorite mind-blowing idiocy from the national collapse of last 7 months.
Makes "gun violence" as a "public health emergency" sound almost reasonable. But not really. One thing for an agency like the CDC to go off the rails by adding idiotic taffy yanks based only on their own ignorance and bigotry, but in this case they literally botched the main thing they were set up to do. By increasing its costs, dramatically, that is - a lot of history, all the science, and common sense as distilled in their own doctrine told them we couldn't stop or control a virus like this.
Posted by: rhomboid at October 25, 2020 02:07 I would like to think that the CDC is nervous about a Trump victory. They're an entrenched bureaucracy so I don't know how much housecleaning would be accomplished but there performance in 2020 gives the Donald a good lever to start the process. Have a friend that grew up in Ghana, now lives in MI. He hates the cold but refuses to dress for it. I don't get that. Wear a coat! Put on your gloves! Posted by: My life is insanity at October 25, 2020 05:52 AM (Z/jzm) Posted by: JT at October 25, 2020 05:52 AM (arJlL) 700

But today i need to bake cookies. Thinking of using my roll out sugar cookie recipe but instead of rolling and cutting into shapes, just tamp down balls of the dough with a sugared glass.

Good morning everyone!
TonyPete, you make it out to this area yet or house hunting elsewhere? Wolfus, I'm heading your direction this morning to get my name in the hat before early voting closes. Good to hear of the lower temps ....after this dry TX air I'm ready to breathe a bit of water, get back to my natural respiratory state. Any Insom sighting yet? Safe travels, Jordan! 567 @506...why in the world Jansen came inside on the 26th man on the roster/pinch runner hitting under .200 and with only 2 abs in the playoffs, both Ks, on a 1-2 count after just getting a call on the outside corner, and the hitter hadn't swung yet, is beyond all reason.
This. For all the other stupidity on the final play, Jansen's lousy 1-2 pitch was the trigger to set it all in motion. Posted by: WS G4, relievers suck at October 25, 2020 01:17 PM (BBWrU) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0873 seconds. |
