Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 10-17-2020Mariam Mansour (UAE) Pic Note: Zombie from last week: OK, here she is: The girl whom everyone in the chess world agrees is the most beautiful chess player ever to play a rated game -- a low-level player on the United Arab Emirates women's team in the Chess Olympiad several years back.Couple of things: I'm not sure I agree she's *the* most beautiful chessplayer. Or, at least, I'd need to see more photographs before I'd make that assessment. I'll let you morons decide for yourselves. Unfortunately, as zombie noted, there just aren't that many photographs of her online. Also, Mansour's FIDE page is blank, no ratings, no demographic info, not much of anything. Which is kind of weird. It's like she doesn't exist. But zombie provided a link to one of her games, so we know she actually was a tournament player, however briefly. Not sure why she disappeared. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. As Melania Trump went to visit the Queen Fabiola Children's Hospital in Brussels, she went for a softer form of power dressing. Sure it was a leather suit with snakeskin pumps, but the blush color was certainly feminine and approachable.
Melania has found the perfect balance of chic and conservative in this custom leather suit by Maison Ullens, a Belgian designer that has a charity which provides women undergoing cancer treatment with wigs, cosmetics, scarves, and support to continue feeling beautiful. The mugs/steins hold one liter. The typical fest mugs are made of glass but the smaller fests and local breweries and gasthouses will use clay mugs. I have a nice collection from my years in Germany. My favorites are one from Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, and one from Kulmbach which is from a monastery. It is beautifully painted. And there is my dreaded 3 liters mug from Baren-Brau in Neustadt o.d. Waldnaab. I have only filled it and emptied it twice, once when I left Germany and again when I retired from the Army. I think it's a cultural thing: Westerners just don't want to concede that a Muslim girl could be attractive. It violates all sorts of expectations and norms. But just set aside the scarf and the knowledge of her religion (and for all we know she could be completely nonreligious, but forced to wear the scarf out of social-compulsion in her society): discounting any cultural attributes, she's a looker.

Speaking of beer, I remember while visiting my sister in SoCal, wife and I went to beer pub that along the coast. You could order a beer in a yard glass. Seemed funny to have to set you glass on the floor next to your booth, so i just opted for the half-yard.

Posted by: zombie at October 17, 2020 05:54 PM (HEEq1) It has nothing to do with conceding. You make it sound like some sort of prejudice. You find her attractive, fine. I don't. Posted by: BurtTC at October 17, 2020 05:57 PM (hku12) 109

== No , zombie. She is not pretty. Has nothing to do with West vs East. Nose out of whack, mouth too small for the rest of feature - overall not very good looking. The second problem is actually the most difficult of the three. Very subtle little dance, with delicate timing.
The real "problem move" black has to deal with is white's Nf5, which covers the mating square on g3 momentarily, but more importantly then allows the pawn to move forward with f4-f5, givng the white king "luft" (as they say in German and Yiddish). I don't want to commit to posting the "solution" until I see all the possible flaws. Haven't done so yet. Posted by: zombie at October 17, 2020 06:09 PM (HEEq1) 156

That answers that, as to where it went wrong. Posted by: BurtTC at October 17, 2020 06:15 PM (hku12) 184

Melania looks like perfection in that suit. It's sexy, it's simple and it's a beautiful picture of her.
Joan Fontaine's dress is really spectacular. A real head turner. I've never seen anything like it and it is stunning. The Dowager Empress's evening gown is so beautiful. I can't tell if there is a high neckline on it, or if that's part of the dress form. I want to imagine it's not a high neck and the dress was meant to show a decolletage. I hate Wagner. I tried to sit throughs a few of his operas. Never was I able to make it thorough the first act. Had to leave. It's not music. It's a collection of notes. I don't understand how normal people can sit through 4, 5, 6 hours of that crap. Sopme opera houses do the whole RING cycle and pretend it is music, and people in the audience pretend they understand. And overweight opera singers (mind you, the music is so overconcocted very few larynxes can work with it) sweat their best thought it. Poor things. Klingon opera is more musical.

Big Dan once came down to the gate of her pen and she drove him off; it was funny to see this hulking boy fleeing the little girl. She's happy, healthy and energetic. A hispanic co-worker was complaining to me once that Selma Hayek was much prettier than her, since she had just seen the movie Frida. I asked her if she wanted me to show her how to look like Selma in that movie, and when she said yes, I took a lock of her hair and held it sideways above both of her eyes. Almost like the Maginot Line the french set up.
Posted by: BurtTC at October 17, 2020 06:48 PM (hku12) Meh, the Maginot Line gets an undeserved bad rep. The plan was always to fight the Germans in Belgium: the purpose of the ML was to prevent the Germans from attacking elsewhere, thus allowing the French to concentrate their forces in a battle in a small area where German numerical superiority would be neutralized, and the French would have Belgian and British assistance. The failures were mostly due to politics which prevented its extension along the Belgian border, as well as the belief that the Germans couldn't attack through the Ardennes. FBI agents are investigating whether emails allegedly found on a laptop at a Delaware repair shop discussing presidential candidate Joe Biden son's supposed business activities in Ukraine are linked to a foreign intelligence operation, according to a report.
Two sources familiar with the matter told NBC on Thursday night bureau chiefs are looking into the possibility that the email cache - allegedly belonging to Hunter Biden - may have been unearthed with help from a power hostile to the US, such as Russia. Early voting in Michigan, Trump is leading by 2 points.
This is devestating for Biden. All of the polls showing a Biden lead, the respondants claimed they have ALREADY voted, and Biden leads among them 3:1. 60% Democrats polled nationwide day they will vote early, vs 30% GOP. Democrats must outnumber Republicans but 30-40 points in early voting to overcome election day where 2 of every 3 votes will be for Trump. If Democrats don't pick up the pace in Michigan, Trump will win by a landslide in the state. Biden has no realistic path if he loses FL and MI. In
the late 70s and early 80s Jimmy Piersall and Harry Carey used to be the announcers for White Sox games. I think they spent half of the time arguing with each other. You don't know what you're talking about Harry. You don't know what you're talking about Jimmy. Those two were great together. Piersall was batshit crazy though and wasn't afraid to rip the Sox when they played bad. I think at some point management had enough and got rid of him and Harry went to the Cubs.
So the "white supremacist", drug-running, gun-running gangs are white supremacist, but, um, mostly drug-running and gun-running.
The sensors are long since over-loaded, the language exhausted, the national degradation off the charts, but this "white supremacy" thing is making a run to crack the highly competitive top few spots for unbelievable idiocy. Racism in the form of "affirmative action", quotas, preferences, absurd racist indoctrination ("CRT"), even "reparations" proposals has defaced the constitution, the country, the society, for years. Its impact is getting people killed, lives and neighborhoods destroyed, and turning half the country into idiotic emotional 10-yr olds. It's real, and it's spectacular. "White supremacy" is a phrase without any real world meaning, any program, any political organization or even idea, any public understanding, interest, or sympathy. "Journalists" might as well demand Trump denounce the Martian colony established in New Jersey that's kidnapping thousands of children every week to use as food, or the ghosts and spirits that have taken over NORAD, expelled the Air Force personnel, and are trying to foment nukyler combat with the russkis. It's beyond absurd, very disturbing, and Trump and others playing along with this bizarre idiocy is disappointing, to say the least. Posted by: rhomboid at October 17, 2020 07:12 PM (OTzUX) 453

If I recall correctly though, this was one detail they didn't change from the book to the show, how Translucent was gotten to. The book is at least as, if not more gory than the show. There are things they aren't willing to do in the show, and what's bugging me more than anything about it is how two-dimensional they can make it all look, on a teevee show with all the budget and live humans acting, whereas on a page of a comic book, characters are more fleshed out, more real, more complex.
