28 Burgoyne was a true F up. Really all of the Brit commanders other than Gage and in some ways Cornwallis were F ups. Not shocking that one of their worst was named Clinton.

It is interesting but not surprising that Carter restored Jefferson Davis. I doubt that info gets around much these days. Biden voted to restore the citizenship of Davis and Lee. Very few after the Gen X generation have ever heard of term reconciliation in regards to the Civil War. And to be fair, a lot of Gen X'ers haven't heard of it either of have a clue what it means.

50 Mawnin', folk!

Cooler air -- even to what I call cooler: 59 F. at 5:30 am. High today expected around 70. It won't last, we'll be back to sweating and running the A/C on high by Monday or Tuesday, but it's a good day for once.

I plan to go out to BestBuy today and purchase a new TV and over-the-air antenna. I may not be able to fit the former into my car, so I may have to have it delivered. There are more items I need -- a DVR for those OTA programs, a Blu-Ray player, a Roku stick -- but I can wait on those for another week, or order them online.

Of course I may have to deal with Face Diaper Theatre. But it may not be bad. Yesterday I went into three separate stores in the same area of the 'burbs. One said nothing to me, and the other two glanced at my doctor's note for medical exemption and waved me in. The Krispy Kreme manager and I even chatted for a few moments -- she has breathing issues too, and has to wear the stupid muzzle for 10 hours a day. I told her, "The moment you leave here, take it off and don't put it on for anybody. If you don't fight this, it'll never go away." And she nodded enthusiastically.

If I'd had a little more time, I'd have probed gently to see if she planned to vote Trump!

51 My last hangover was nearly 40 years ago. It was so epic I lost any desire to over indulge. (Mass quantities of home made aqavit were involved.)

I would love to say I'm a virtuous fella but can't. No temptation equals no virtue. But the memory of it is still so strong I can sympathize with Krak.

If we have reason to celebrate after 11/3, I'm going on a small road trip. The Buick is the perfect car for that, I haven't done any long highway driving in it, and the state next door, MS, has lifted its stupid face diaper requirements.

Aside from the Gulf Coast itself, I don't know what there is to see. I'm not insulting the state; I just don't know, as aside from Biloxi and environs, I haven't spent much time there.

82 The local "news" keep reporting how the long lines that are forming for early voting are unprecedented. Maybe they are trying to scare us away from voting at all. I base this on the notion that they are reporting these 3-hour waits only in the suburbs, where Trump voters may well be found. I live in The Pesthole proper, where there are only 2 legal locations for early voting, and there hasn't been a peep about them.

I'll drive on Monday over to the courthouse where I usually vote. If the line isn't bad, I'll cast my ballot. If it is, I can pop my absentee ballot into the box there.

95 84 Niece-in-law has Covid anxiety big time. Told me the other day that she knows 6 people that have died from Covid. That's a pretty high number. One of the deaths was a healthy 18 year old and 2 60 year olds without underlying conditions. Just seems so far fetched. I barely know anyone that's tested positive let alone hospitalized or died.

I was standing in line at Wally World with Mom back in May and a guy struck up a conversation because she had pulled her mask down a little so she could breathe. He was all for them and said he knew 3 people who died, one a 16 year old. I asked him what her name was.

Fumbled.....

Yeah, right.

100 Prayer request update-

Last Sunday I asked for prayers for my SiL who was hospitalized with covid.

We buried her Thursday.

A prayer request for those so inclined-

I'm worried about my brother. He's recovering from covid but I don't know if he's going torecover from losing her.

A prayer for my brother would be appreciated.

He's the only person I've heard say DJT is anything but completely respectful to Evangelicals and I'm supposed to take a sellout like Sasse's word that he's otherwise. It sounds like the question he was responding to was critical for not supporting Trump more so rather than honestly answer that "I'm an untrustworthy piece of shit" he had to make up lies that Saint Benny got the vapors over. Fuck him in particular. I'm sure the Nebraska GOP is the typical gaggle of Gas Chamber tools with a globalist agenda.

116 I worked in a tire shop on Sats when I was a yute.

The 1st thing, I was SUPPOSED to turn on the compressor.

I had a hangover to beat the band, My head was THROBBING.

The switch to turn on the compressor was on the wall behind the compressor (it SHOULD have been on the moon)

So, I would have to squeeze behind the compressor and flip the switch. With my face 2 inches away from the compressor.

And the compressor would go DUDDUDDDAADDDDAA until the tank filled with air.

On this Sat, I said F it, I ain't turning it on until I have to.

I'm standing outside, the (non-drinking) birds are singing 8:15 there's a car coming drom atop the hill and I'm thinking, "Please don't turn in here, PLEASE don't turn in here" and he turned in.

Guy gets out, and in a British accent says "I 'ave a tire and its laking, I wondered if you could 'ave a look at it for me ?"

I stood there with my mouth open and wondered if Allen Funt had sent him.

171 I don't know anyone who has tested positive or got sick. The virus is real no doubt, but the whole situation is weird. It is everywhere, but also nowhere. It is not a thing right up until it is a thing.

I have no answers here and my circle is small so that might be a factor. I know I have don't pretty much the same thing for six months and so far i am ok. I could have had it at not known. That is another thing. I wonder how many got it and now have antibodies but don't know one way or the other.

I take the regular precautions. I use the hand sanitizer in my truck, i put the mask on in stores at least in big cities. But I lose the mask the second I am out of a store. I have decided to pull it up if someone with a mask is passing me by and i can't get out of the way. I do this as a courtesy to them. But i pull that mask down ten or twenty times a day and that is supposed to be a bad thing. At this point i am not changing, it seems to have worked for well over half a year.

My last family connections to Scandahoovia were the Vikings who invaded and established Normandy. The aquavit was just an experiment with a buddy: a quart of vodka, a bunch of caraway seeds, combine, shake well and leave in a freezer for a month. Taste was pretty good. The aftereffects were the problem.

I've since sipped small quantities of the real thing, which I enjoyed. Helps that I love the taste of caraway.

I was at the county tax office yesterday to renew my tag. Four clerks, one customer besides me. I grabbed a mask and had it in my pocket, figuring I was gonna 'need' it. Sure as shit...

Sign on the door sez Wear A Mask Please. Uh huh. Plexiglass separates all the clerks from us rabble; fine. I go up to a clerk and hand her my tag notice. She pushes a mask thru the same gap and sez 'a mask is required'.

I say 'the governor ended the mask mandate'.
A. Our office requires them.
'The sign doesn't say it's required'
A. We are just being polite.
'None of you are wearing masks.'
A. *mumbles something*. Seriously.

So I half ass put on my mask, the forms have been observed, and now she will 'serve' me. Sigh.

240 The mask correlation is most likely about hubris, not about how masks are bad.

HOWEVER!; How many mask wearers change their masks? Most don't, so they are actually COLLECTING infectious shit next to their face, unless they change their mask everytime they make contact.

Example, I carry with me two handkerchiefs at most times. One is for me. The other is for others, but I NEVER touch the one for others. I tell them, "If you need one take the one out of my right pocket." Yes, I really do that.

I keep the one in my left, because I smoke, and sometimes smoke, and because I'm from Chicago, and live in australia, so my new home's pollin is strange to me and I sneeze.

Neither are sanitary, but they are enough normaly, and they make people feel good.

A mask, is nothing but disgusting. I don't even like my own breath 20 minutes after brushing and rinsing my teeth, My mouth is disgusting, amazed my wife lets me kiss her, and she loves me.

243 184,
The major factor is that a) the cloth masks that most people are wearing get contaminated, don't particularly prevent inhaling or expelling small covid particles in water droplets, and leak air above the mask or around it when inhaling--b) disposable surgical mask are slightly better but must be adjusted to the face and disposed off promptly after use.

N95 masks are more effective but you have to cinch them down tight enough to leave deep indentations, be clean shaven, adjusted properly, and and the vented type do nothing to prevent others from getting your covid germs. That is pretty much to keep the increase in CO2, humidity, etc. from climbing in a tightly sealed mask.

In general wearing masks continuously for long term is not the most healthy practice and can affect those with pre existing breathing problems the worst.

Stepping up the respirators, gas mask systems, etc. are the most effective but the most difficult to wear for long periods of time and filters must be changed on a regular basis. Worn incorrectly, they offer little additional in protection.

All masks are susceptible to secondary contamination by hands, adjusting them, pulling them up, trying to reseal them etc. without washing and decontaminating hands first.

Permanent masks need to be cleaned on a very regular basis--as in after being in an area with potential exposure.

Because of all these factors, in theory, a mask can reduce your likelihood of getting covid when all other factors are excluded, but in practice, the way the most people wear masks, it gives very marginal protection especially when they do not do the other steps such as cleaning hands constantly, avoiding crowds and lengthy conversations with people, not keeping up with their Vitamin D intake or getting enough sunlight on bare exposed skin per day, and so on, avoiding places where sick people are, proper bathroom hygiene if using public toilets which appear to be a vector, and so on. If you are above 45 with health issues involving heart, lungs, diabetes, immune systems etc., consider yourself at heightened risk.

Personally, I augment my system with otc supplements (some of which I was already taking for other conditions) but they are not for everyone and can cause issues with some medications. Always ask a pharmacist (doctors are often surprisingly ignorant of interactions) before starting any.

Prevention from getting covid or flu is a multi factor problem dealing with both atmospheric contamination and surface contamination but most people ignore all but one factor.

In other words, it may be that you can buy guns and ammo but only for cash in person, and you'll have your First Amendment rights but only express them via a copy machine. It's a thought-provoking column.

285 264,
The sad thing is that Bruce was pretty normal apparently until about 1980 when he caught a case of Reagan Derangement Syndrome.

He also had an advisor named Jon Landau that was very left wing in opinions and started listening to old commies like Woody Guthrie (fake man of the people) etc. For awhile, his tours and albums in the 1980's (aside from Nebraska which is mostly apolitical but very dark), did not show excessive politics. Starting though in 2000+ as his talent declined (or interest) and his money pile grew, he became all about being political.

Bruce at least was a talented songwriter and bandleader (and not so good a singer) and a lot of his music did reflect what was happening in the early move to globalization to the poor white folks in the Midwest and Northeast. The jobs were disappearing, costs were skyrocketing, their towns were deteriorating, etc. Bob Seger covered a lot of the same issues at the time but had a much better voice as did some others.

Some English bands also effectively picked up on the devastation that globalization did economically and socially to the working class in the 70's and 80's.

Now, most of our popular singers come from the middle and upper classes that reflect those classes increasingly leftist sensibilities rather than the working class concerns. It shows in their music which is often cynical, slick, and nihilistic. Which to me makes it eminently disposable.

college is a whole other thing for sure. The DC Cheerleaders are another level though when it comes to the pros. They are really the only truly professional group I know of at least in football. They travel the entire year, do USO stuff and other charities. I doubt anyone would skip that opportunity if they had the chance. They are like the Harlem Globetrotters in many ways. in fact, if the NFL cancelled their season, it would not affect the DC Cheerleaders' draw at all. JMO.

Springsteen used to have a good rock and roll sense. I thought his first few albums were pretty fucking good (the first time I heard Blinded By the Light it was like a cascade of images similar to Subterranean Homesick Blues) and his live shows were fun to be at. Then he lost it, tried forming other groups and fell flat on his face despite having the big label robber barons behind him, so reformed the E Street Band and has been mailing it in while charging stupid codgers outrageous prices to see recycled shit.

Jon Landau used to be a good music reviewer at Rolling Stone. Don't get me started on Woody Guthrie, a worthless deadbeat who sat on his lazy ass and wrote songs about people who actually worked while he was fucking their wives.

Well, no, fast food and losing money hand over fist are not on my list of priorities. If there's still an IHOP to be found, I might try that. Decades ago there used to be a Sambo's in a mall parking lot near Hwy. 90, and a hotel called the Royal d'Iberville. I know Sambo's is gone everywhere, but maybe the hotel is there under a new name.

There's some local diners in downtown Gulfport, north of Hwy. 90, or used to be.

335 100 Prayer request update-

Last Sunday I asked for prayers for my SiL who was hospitalized with covid.

We buried her Thursday.

A prayer request for those so inclined-

I'm worried about my brother. He's recovering from covid but I don't know if he's going torecover from losing her.

A prayer for my brother would be appreciated.

SiL was only 44 years old.

Political capital is useless until you spend it. I see accurately depicting risks and cost/benefit of Rona mitigation going to the general welfare and the effect of that on his reelection effort as minimal. So, this is a good expenditure.

408 I was talking about Trump needing shut up and to stop downplaying the virus at his rallies and elsewhere. It is counterproductive in my opinion after all of the good things he has done.

You're aware that the total number of deaths from everything in the country this year was tracking as of 9/24 to be less than either of the two preceding years, no?

Posted by: Captain Hate at October 17, 2020 09:00 AM (y7DUB)

409 401 CitationX: Trump isn't downplaying the virus, rather, he's encouraging the country to not panic and live life cautiously. I too have lost two friends to the virus. Both wore masks everywhere and fanatically wiped surfaces. You just can't completely prevent catching it. I think many are suffering from the lonliness of isolation and fear. Trump seems to be saying that fear must not be allowed to control and ruin your life. Most will recover.

yeah that is relatively new but I have heard of them. Even traditions at historically conservative entities change and have changed a lot in recent years.

Texas AM used to be famous for having the 12th Man. It was once the entire kick off coverage team. They were all non scholarship walk ons that represented the student body. A new coach came in and the first game the opponent ran one back on them. After that the 12th Man became not an entire team, but one man on that team.

That school has changed a lot since the loss of the 12th Man team and the Bonfire tragedy. Not that those were the reasons, but it was the beginning of a lot of change there. Then you had Johnny Manziel. He became a super star but was about as far from a traditional Aggie as you can get. It is still a great school and one of the most conservative public universities in the nation.,

422 As has been pointed out by the "scientists" there are what, 10k 'rona deaths without co-morbidities? That's 1 in 30,000 Americans. For comparison the running suicide rate in this country is 1 in 7,500 Americans annually.
You are 4 times more likely to know a suicide than someone who actually died of the 'rona - but they tried to destroy a country and still have 50% of the country scared shitless. Burning at the stake is too good for these people.

429 if someone suffers from Covid or knows someone who has, that is going to greatly influence their opinion. But as all serious researchers have noted, a lot of people have died and suffered from the shut down as well. It is hard to get these things right, if that is possible at all. Even if you do get it right, there will be many who question your decisions.

We could eradicate all car crashes fairly easily when you think about it. Would doing so be worth it though? Car crashes are a leading cause of death as far as i know.

What I don't know is what Trump could do differently that would lessen the impact of Covid and also lessen the damage done to the country writ large. Didn't even Fauci say no other administration could have reasonably done more on this?

433 422, I am willing to cut some slack to authorities when we knew little about the disease and its treatment in Feb, March, April, and May. At least at first, some speculation was that it might be a bio weapon which would produce natural caution.

We have a pretty good handle on it now and know it is a) not a super bug, b) some early treatments were counterproductive (no steroid treatment and respirators for example, and c) people with existing medical conditions suffer the most, d) most of the peak infectious rate has passed in many states and passed faster in those that did not lock down.

Over the long run, masks, social distancing, tests and screenings, etc. will be of minimal impact compared with herd immunity growth where healthy people get it, produce antibodies, and move on.

We have had much worse flu seasons per capita without shutting down the economy--1958 flu epidemic killed about 116000 mostly healthy people in the U.S. from a much smaller population and the 68 epidemic did about the same. Expanded to today's population, it would be about 250-300 thousand deaths. Remember the Swine flu epidemic that Fauci and Obama reassured us about-- H1N1 killed about 12000 and 80 percent of those were under 65 with many in their teens. Most of them had no co morbidities and flu treatment had several different antivirals by that time.

440 my moms neighbor in his 70s is a covid death, but it was more a suicide. He refused to be treated for his ms or the covid, asked to go straight to hospice. Er nurse asked his loved ones to talk him into treatment but they failed. on my dads side of the family, three second cousins, all siblings, got covid...one nearly died in April, she still requires rehab therapies and is relearning walking, feeding herself, etc, months later. Her brother got it this week and is on a vent in a medical coma, his wife n kids are at home with flulike symptoms. The third sib tested positive but is asymptomatic. All in late 30s to early 40s and reasonably healthy before this year, all mask wearing, social distancing, etc. (After Ashlee back in spring theyve all been terrified.) I think the damn virus just likes their genetic makeup.
