Science Isn't Dead, But It Is Ailing - Part 2

ICU22.jpg

The politicization of science has now been proceeding apace for some years. The problem began, of course, with the social "sciences," which were dodgy to begin with, and became worse as they became a vehicle for advancing the leftist agenda. We've all seen numerous "studies" purporting to show that conservatives are all father-rapers who dance in the nude in the moonlight chanting over a dead cat.

Such "studies" are, of course, ridiculous, and no one with a room temperature IQ or above takes them seriously. But there is a more pernicious aspect, in that leftists cite social "science" studies as "proof" that their views reflect ScienceTM and that therefore anyone who opposes them is rejecting ScienceTM, and can therefore be dismissed as a Neanderthal.

A case in point occurred involving Prop. 8 in California, a voter initiative that effectively banned homosexual marriage and that had passed handily. In the ensuing litigation the state - in the person of AG Jerry Brown, a well-known conservative - was charged with defending Prop. 8, which they did with all the desire that any of us would have to kiss Hillary Clinton on the mouth.

Those trying to overturn Prop. 8 presented numerous "studies" showing that homosexual liaisons were fantastic, more stable than heterosexual ones in fact, and much to be encouraged, much like homosexuality itself. The state - i.e., Jerry Brown - produced bupkis. The presiding judge then overturned Prop. 8, saying that the state had failed to produce any studies rebutting those proffered by those opposed to Prop. 8, and then concluded the farcial pat-a-cake performance by going home to his husband. Now to my mind, this politicization of social "science," with the exception of instances such as that above, is no more concerning than would be the politicization of phrenology, or dowsing.

But what is troubling is the increasing politicization of actual science. The poster child for this, of course, is global warming, and more recently the Covid restrictions. Are masks and social distancing beneficial, not beneficial, sort of beneficial, or utterly necessary, but only for those in churches, political rallies, etc., with those engaging in rioting and looting enjoying immunity from the virus? Somehow, inexplicably, those engaging in left-wing "activities" do not spread the virus. Perhaps carrying an HDTV out of a Best Buy is some sort of protective talisman, a contemporary equivalent of a rabbit's foot or a St. Christopher medal.

Those are just high-profile instances of the politicization of science. Meanwhile, below the radar, the rot is spreading rapidly on less well-known fronts. For example, the proliferation of science and technology "studies," as well as engineering "studies" provides leftists - and these areas are exclusively leftist domains - with the patina of science, technology, and engineering, but without the substance. It gives its practitioners some aura of credibility while they promote leftist agitprop, secure in the knowledge that most people will they are listening to a scientist or an engineer, instead of a jumped-up sociologist. For example, from Wikipedia:

Engineering studies is an interdisciplinary branch of social sciences and humanities devoted to the study of engineers and their activities, often considered a part of science and technology studies (STS), and intersecting with and drawing from engineering education research.

So, basically, there's no engineering in "engineering studies."

We here at Casa Guevara came face to face with this politicization of science problem several years ago, when one of the Guevara spawn contemplated taking an AP high school course entitled "environmental science." He got the reading list and immediately rejected that idea. What was on the reading list, you ask? Articles on the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle, that sort of thing?

Not a bit of it. It was entirely leftist agitprop. Not a scintilla of actual science.

Here's the flavor of it, with excerpts from reviews, with more detail compiled here.

A Civil Action, by Jonathan Harr

"A Civil Action reads like one long advertisement for a few well-placed Molotov cocktails."
OK then.

***

Crimes Against Nature, by Robert F. Kennedy
Now here, I thought, is a topic on which the Kennedys can certainly write with authority, but the whole title is: Crimes Against Nature: How George W. Bush and His Corporate Pals Are Plundering the Country and Hijacking Our Democracy
***

Death in the Marsh, by Tom Harris
***

This detailed, persuasive narrative further clarifies the need to discover and remedy environmental perils while we still have the power to do so.
We've only got N years!
***

Earth in the Balance, by Al Gore

This hardly needs discussion.

***

Eco-Warriors: Understanding the Radical Environmental Movement

Eco-Warriors was the first in-depth look at the people, actions, history and philosophies behind the "radical" environmental movement. Focusing on the work of Earth First!, the Sea Shepherds, Greenpeace, and the Animal Liberation Front, among others, Rik Scarce told exciting and sometimes frightening tales of front-line warriors defending an Earth they see as being in environmental peril.
...
Literate, captivating, and informative, this is also an ideal volume for classes on environmentalism, social movements, or contemporary politics.
"Front-line warriors." You know, just like the Waffen SS.

***

Earth in Mind: On Education, Environment, and the Human Prospect, by David Orr

In Earth in Mind, Orr focuses not on problems in education, but on the problem of education. Much of what has gone wrong with the world, he argues, is the result of inadequate and misdirected education that alienates us from life in the name of human domination; causes students to worry about how to make a living before they know who they are; overemphasizes success and careers; separates feeling from intellect and the practical from the theoretical and deadens the sense of wonder for the created world.

***

Our Stolen Future: Are We Threatening Our Fertility, Intelligence, and Survival? by Theo Colborn and Dianne Dumanoski

"A critically important book that forces us to ask new questions about the synthetic chemicals that we have spread across this earth."—former vice president Al Gore, author of An Inconvenient Truth

***

Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret Danger of Everyday Things, by Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie

This is one scary book. Using a variety of test methods, the authors determined individual “body burdens,” or the toxic chemical load we carry. The innocuous rubber duck, for example, offers a poison soup of phthalates that “permeate the environment and humans.”
...
If readers don’t change their ways after reading this one, then they never will.

***

Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble, by Lester Brown

Earth Policy Institute president Brown (Who Will Feed China?) surveys the worldwide environmental devastation wrought by breakneck industrialization and the heedless, auto-centric, "throwaway economy": oil and water shortages, pollution, deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, collapsing fisheries, mass extinctions, looming famine and pestilence-and he hasn't even gotten to global warming yet.

***

I guess I just might as well open my veins now.

The problem is that this pernicious nonsense is now being taught under the aegis of science, when it is in fact no such thing. It is an example of what David Burge (IIRC) has aptly characterized as the left killing a respected institution, wearing its skin, and demanding respect. The question is: how to combat this?

4 Excellent summation, Deplorable Jay Guevara.

If Science™.was still followed, we could take their hypothesis and compare it with data. This is killing a beautiful theory with a ugly fact.

We can definitely do this with all of Scientism. But it does not work. Because the experts (pbut) disallow it.

Got some ideas, though.

It's a conundrum.

How do I get rid of the loony leftists fouling up the education system at a local level without the massive weight of the government forcing out the political bullshit and demanding, under penalty of banishment, that they stick to the basics?

It becomes government sponsored education, which in the wrong hands is exactly how we got where we are today.

Just do away with government funding of higher education. Make the student explain to a bank loan officer how he/she is going to repay the loan with a "studies" degree that qualifies him to make coffee and nothing more.

Posted by: LGoPs at October 17, 2020 07:28 PM (/a3Ep)

26 First, no real scientist is allowed near students. Ask me how I know.

1) I set up a booth at the county fair with my conservative peeps. Debated some students and a prof. Sow a seed of doubt.

2) Send a pointed letter to a senior politician on the funding side with "why this is failing" and you spent money on this, but the outcome was different. Stop funding failure.

3) Homeschool.

4) Going to school boards is useless, so we need stealth candidates. Elect locally, and clear. I coached one guy, who only lost by a 1,000 votes.

5) Run for office yourself. I almost got run for a Board of Trustees at the state level. Almost. I attended that meeting, and said no, because ... my wife.

6) Competition that succeeds wins over public failure.

27 The university I received my BS and MS from is or at least was the number 4 engineering university in the USA. My graduating class in mechanical engineering was 32.
About 5 years ago i rented a house to a bunch of engineering students, well 4 of them. They were all studying environmental engineering. So I looked up the graduating class of the year before.

Environmental engineers graduating were more than all the EEs, MEs, CEs, and NEs combined.

That was when I knew we were all fucked in the asshoe... and hard.. and long. This will not end well.

30 I noticed the leftist BS creeping into hard science textbooks years ago. They cannot help themselves. Stripped of the pseudo-intellectual quackery, it is always geared towards a wholesale reduction in our standard of living, while other countries around the world labor under no such handicaps or delusions. Since that time it has accelerated and pervades everything right through K12 and preschool. Orwell and Goebbels would blush at the levels of gaslighting and propaganda.

India has 5th graders taking Calculus, while American 5th graders don't know what bathroom to use. This isn't by accident. Think about that the next time some ass hat "educator" talks about the global economy and how our kids need a world class education.

TLDR, Biden is not doing well.

Trump is apparently winning in Florida so far and his voter registration numbers are well ahead the Dems, which hasn't happened in decades.

It's pointing to Dems blowing their loads early, since turnout voting day will be massively in the R column. If they are tied now or R is ahead, Nov will be ugly.

Give it another week and I'll bet the media starts to sound quite somber.

126 Scientific method as we know it was the result of people who believed that objective truth existed and could be discovered. The kind of people who said that 2+2=4. So when they ran into findings that contradicted their hypotheses, it was the indicator to keep testing and re-evaluate the hypothesis, not yell that the results were racist.

I think there is also more fake but accurate magical thinking now, it's become more of a set of beliefs and dogma, complete with heretics, priests and indulgences. The superstitions and talismans are also much in evidence.

Teach your kids, and any with whom you have influence, to think and learn how to ask/identify questions that dismantle the whole thing. I have had three go through public high school, and we had constant conversations. The youngest was pretty sure her teachers hated her because she would ask an innocuous question that would trigger lightbulbs in the other students, and then they would pile on. Kids like to rebel, don't you know!

They are now working with teens in our church youth group, and ever so gently and gradually dismantling the insanity so many have been sold.

_________

Part of the problem is philosophical, and has been long coming. To the extent that scientists (even the real kind) believe in some sort of objective truth, they usually do so in the watered down form of pragmatism. The test of whether something is true is "whether it works".

The problem is the meaning of "works", and unsound philosophers (e.g., Rorty) have seen that that really amounts to "what is good for us to believe." IOW, "we like the results." From there, any result one finds undesirable, can be discarded for one which one wishes to be true.

Note that C S Lewis saw this in the 1940s.

160 113 -- That's only part of the problem. Engineers simply do not think like the rest of us. I'm not knocking engineers; my stepfather was one, my two youngests' godfather is an engineer, and I know a few others. I'm simply saying that engineers don't exist on the same plane as the rest of us. So, if a normal person can converse with someone claiming to be an engineer without screaming in total frustration, they ain't talking to an engineer.

Long overdue. Because I was born under communism I recognized the indoctrination from elementary school on no matter how subtle. For example the IB program in High School. That was a sneaky one. Private school in which most parents were opposed to the insanity. So they introduced it in very underhanded ways. I've had to reprogram my sons brains since second grade the youngest (global warming hoax), and middle school at least for the oldest (dual track punishment system based on race).

Amazing how fast jet air travel can take one from point A to Point B when one doesn't have to show up 2 hours early and sit on the tarmac for an hour, eh? And then AF1 doesn't get stacked up in a holding pattern. In terms of right of way, a free balloon has right of way over a sailplane and a sailplane has right of way over a powered aircraft.

Of course, if you restrict yourself to the same category of aircraft, national defense and any flight with the callsign "lifeguard" have priority over AF1.

193 This topic is near and dear to my heart - I've been fighting the climate wars for a long time. It's been astounding - in the first wave, up until the infamous Climategate scandal (2009, I believe) the Warmists really did try to prove that Mathematically and Scientifically, they were Right. Then it became obvious that all of their "science" was based on faked numbers and ridiculously wrong assumptions, so they began to pressure University Dep'ts to fire anyone who wasn't on board with their side, and same thing with any corporate grants.

Now their science hasn't gotten any better - in fact it gets more ridiculous and fake every year - but they've even run off all of the people who understood the actual science on their side. Now it is pure religion; anyone who doubts Global Warming is a Heretic! and a Rayciss! (why? only a Rayciss! would ask that question!!!) And anyone who states the Truth is instantly fired from any University Dep't, and instantly fired from any Publicly held corporation.

The big "Secret" about the Global Warming Controversy is that there's no actual controversy at all; it has all been blatantly faked, from top to bottom. And anyone who says that in public is instantly un-personed.

My pleasure, Emmie. Writing this stuff is somewhere between therapeutic and cathartic.

One of the science teachers at our community college asked me to help her learn how to explain the math in this project she was going to have her students do. It was population-alarmist baloney that assumed population growth is accurately modeled by an exponential function.

I told her that real-life populations do not follow an exponential curve, so she dropped it.

Which should be obvious, otherwise the earth would be overrun with rabbits. Perhaps she's never heard of the logistic function?

Posted by: Insomniac at October 17, 2020 08:33 PM (NWiLs)

244 I disagree with the notion that the rot "began" with the social sciences and spread to the hard sciences. It was always in the hard sciences, because science and the scientific method have always only partially aligned. Science is full of political hacks, arrogant asses, insecure dweebs, and grifters looking to make a buck. The notion of the scientist toiling away in his lab, seeking the Truth wherever it leads was always a fantasy.

What really changed were two world wars, especially WWII, which were fully industrialized and where scientific development was brought into the war effort in a way that hadn't been seen before. Following WWII, the post-war order with large-scale global institutions, domestic bureaucracies, and the constant scientific pressure of the Cold War created a new social place for scientists, as well as a cult of quantification that came to believe in the power of "hard data". Meanwhile, the hard sciences (especially physics) were drifting into more and more esoteric and ephemeral areas. The result was a generation of scientists who increasingly involved themselves in political and social debates where they had no experience or expertise, and because of that were subject to the same infection of poisonous ideas as everyone else. A physicist isn't anymore immune to the notions of critical race theory simply because he has a Ph.D. in physics. And because they were often tucked away in safe jobs in the government or in academia, they were shielded from much of the real world.

Reagan was my second time voting. I was in college by then, and everybody, I mean everybody hated him. But, it was cool to hate him in CA University system. That's how everyone was being programmed, and of course all kids want to belong to the "club".

His demented bony finger on the nuclear button. Psychopath with the nuclear codes. He's going to blow us all up. He's going to start war with Russia. The economy is going to hell, no such thing as trickle down. Sound familiar?

I agree with you to an extent; BUT there was always a safeguard built into the hard sciences. Now that safeguard has been thrown away.

The safeguard is best described in Popper's writings about Falsification. First, *no* idea can be called "scientific" if they can not be falsified (ie, proved or disproved) Ideas that cannot be falsified are Religious, not Scientific. (ie, God Exists) In honest Science, any new finding should be immediately attacked by other scientists who seek to falsify it. ONLY if the new idea stands up under such scrutiny, should it be generally accepted.

But instead, by 2009, we had the climategate controversy and the Researchers saying "No, Critics may NOT see my raw data, they'll just try to discredit it!" Yes, discrediting ideas is what Honest Science is all about. Throw that part out and the entire thing becomes politico-religious nonsense, in every field.

And this is why it really hurts me to know that less than 50% of the Clinical trials for new drugs are repeatable, and the FDA doesn't care. Claude Popper knew - it it's not repeatable, it's just a fraud.

278 Whoa, didn't know about this one.

Great post, Jay.

Imagine the Horde has mostly said it all, on the topic.

It's appalling, outrageous, and frightening.

And just focusing for a second on the current - and all-time worst - hijacking of "science" and abuse of the citizenry by the state, in its name - Nov. 3 is not any kind of end-point.

Even if, against all indications so far, Trump decides to junk the entire false framework he and most of the country have been shackled with since May, at the latest (that a viral respiratory epidemic can be "fought", contained, managed, etc), there will be an enormous war to be fought with the now clearly off-the-rails, fully political, "public health" institutions, federal and state.

And no - just (sincerely, and appropriately) being in favor of "re-opening" is not nearly enough. It's a perfect analogy with the half-assed, weasel-ish withdrawal from the Paris Accords. "It's not a good deal for us" has nothing to do with "the entire 'issue' is baseless and without scientific merit, and anything done with reference to it is indefensible and inexcusable".

Just kinda sorta being a big pro-growth guy will do nothing to push back Leviathan, which has extended its reach in the last 6 months more than any time in our history (there's literally nothing in any part of American history to compare, unless one makes the ridiculously forced analogies to very short-term WWII rationing, price controls, etc).

I also think the swamp was far, far better at staying hidden, and we didn't see or know what was going on behind the scenes. In retrospect, Reagan was being beat down in similar fashion to Trump by the GOPe. I think after being shot and in his second term that was evident. But it was HW's term that revealed the swamp to me for the first time in all its murky glory.

One of SNL's only funny sketches was of Reagan, and I think they nailed it.

This.

As ranted about previously, biomedical science has a LOT of problems with reproducibility.

Also, no idea can "proved." It can only be disproven. Ideas that have withstood intense scrutiny without being falsified - so far - are tentatively accepted as valid models. Until an experiment that falsifies them. The notion that science is ever settled is ludicrous.

293 On a more serious note -- I have absolutely no idea how to turn the American education system around. I was in fourth grade the day Sputnik went up. My teacher stood in front of the entire class the next day and apologized for the American educational system as it was at that moment. She was so upset, she nearly groveled in front of us.

It appalls me how ignorant my kids are about areas of knowledge that the XO and I take for granted. I had to teach No. 3 son long division because he simply couldn't grasp it the way it was being taught. Me!!! The Liberal Arts, can't pass a science or math class idiot. And his teacher was less than thrilled with me.

And speaking as a Liberal Arts major, I am even more appalled by what passes as Liberal Arts these days.

Years ago, I used to say that what American education needed was to bring back the teachers who trained before WW II. Those old gals (and, yes, the vast majority of them were female) knew how to educate a packed classroom. My mother got her teaching certificate in the early '60s and she had absolutely nothing good to say about the younger teachers coming up behind her. She thought they were lazy, undisciplined, and ignorant of what they were supposed to be teaching.

305 But instead, by 2009, we had the climategate controversy and the Researchers saying "No, Critics may NOT see my raw data, they'll just try to discredit it!"

I reviewed extensively in academia, on average, a paper a day.

I'd have rejected their paper out of hand, unread, for refusal to deposit their raw data and data reduction algorithms as supplementary material.

A crystallographer at Caltech used to turn up incorrect crystallographic papers by analysis of the supplementary material that every reputable journal demanded (usually amounting to hundreds of pages). That's crystallography. About as hard a science as you're going to find. Usually the problem was misassignment of the space group.

307 I was at the in laws where we wear masks as they are in the older vulnerable demographic. Anyway, I had a little taste of coffee infused rum. With my mask on, I could smell the drink. Now what are the relative sizes of the wuhan virus and the volatile molecules in a rum drink?

There is much speculation that there is a orafecal route of infection. Traditionally, one vector is through contaminated food or water, more recently there is speculation that it comes from the aerosols from uncovered commode flushing.

So you bring up Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and while the mask is allegedly capable of reducing the conveyance of "droplets" of whatever, VOCs (like those emitted from trees) aren't stopped at all - as you are able to smell the VOCs from the coffee infused rum.

I submit then that many a case of CoViD-19 is transmitted through flatulence.

In this case, we can have deadly farts.

I always point to the downfall of the conservation of parity in 1956. Conservation of parity (in short, that atoms didn't know whether they were pointing up or down) was on a par with conservation of energy in physics until two Chinese guys at the National Bureau of Standards showed definitively the parity was NOT conserved in the gamma emissions of 60-cobalt (IIRC).

Science is about constructing models to understand observations.

Think about an auto mechanic. A car's battery keeps discharging overnight. First conjecture: maybe the battery is failing. Experiment: disconnect the battery, charge it up, and check it the next day. Result: no problem.

First conjecture is rejected. Maybe there's a parasitical drain on the battery. Experiment: interpose an ammeter between the battery's anode and the connection to the car's circuit. Result: the mechanic measure 800 ma. Uh oh. Something is drawing a shitload of current from the battery.

Second conjecture: it's one of the car's circuits. Which one? Start pulling fuses and measuring the parasitical current. When you finally pull one and the parasitical current drops, it's THAT circuit.

What's on that circuit? Etc. Now we're narrowing down where the problem arises.

That is a prosaic example of the scientific method, at which auto mechanics are very proficient indeed. Much more so than many liberals who would deprecate their intellectual prowess, and could never find the problem on their own.

The amnesty was entirely a mixture of Texas politics and reliance on the professional consultant class. As for the wars, by 2008 Iraq was largely pacified, and Bush didn't make the large scale commitments to Afghanistan that Obama did. Bush expected Obama to continue the then current direction because it was slowly working. By 2009 the Iranians were on the ropes and all that was needed was a good push. Instead Obama bailed them out, betrayed the protesters, and basically tried to cede control of the Middle East to the mullahs.

Posted by: Weasel at October 17, 2020 08:00 PM (MVjcR)

Maximum Cruise speed on that 757 is going to be about 550 mph, with 525-ish being the more normal, fuel-conserving power setting.

The 747 is still the fastest large passenger jet in the skies, with the ability to cruise at 645 mph, and burning absolutely insane quantities of fuel in the doing.

625 is the more common power setting, and on long trans Pacific flights, that might come down to 600, just to maximize fuel economy.

Our commenter "CitationX Driver" would be more of an expert here, but the Cessna Citation X he pilots is about as fast as the 747, but without the incredible range of the Jumbo.

I'm thinking A.F. 1 is getting President Trump to these rallies at the upper end of the envelope.

Money well spent, I'd say.

No, I contend that an engine compartment that you can see the ground thru is an indication of simplicity.

Heh. Many years ago, I spent several summer months in Uranium City, Saskatchewan, doing surveys at several old mine sites. We stayed in an abandoned house, of which there were many, the main mine and mill having been closed. Needless to say, sacks of ore samples were everywhere.

One day, a knock at the door, a cute little girl in a hard hat. "I'm here to do a radon survey for the Federal Government." I said, "You know, you are wasting your time. We are geologists, with radioactive ore samples on the premises, and any readings you get will be completely spurious." And she went away.

Nothing like sitting in a bar all day dealing with interesting characters coming and going. I'd hate to admit how many years I've spent.

470 Well I never learned to code. Designed foundry equipment for 20 + years. Quit because I had three or four bottles of Malox going at any given time. Spent the next 20 working mountain ops. ( snowcat operator ) summer maintenance. Poor pay but no stress.

471 'my last one was a 1992 F-150 with the 300 Straight Six '

I had a 94 with the six. That was a great truck, but it had FI so not simple. Yes, more fuel efficient than a carb, but once again, electronics are involved.

The Datsun 1600 pickup had a carb, points, and those tie down hooks welded around the outside of the bed. Simple, and elegant.

that engine went away with the "new" F-150; they lowered the hood and "rounded" the front end; the 300 Straight Six was too tall to package under the re-designed sheet metal

I was pissed about it for over a decade

Watch out with park models. The site rent can kill you by degrees. It goes on 12 months a year. And some parks, if the trailer ages out, you have to replace it. And some park management makes Nazi HOA's look positively benign.

492 Way late to this thread, but a particular bugaboo of mine. I have a PhD from a top research institute. Going through this process it became readily apparent of a massive bias toward getting positive results for one's thesis so as to earn one's PhD. Massive 0/1 outcome. Large incentive to monkey with data, adjust beta weights with models, p-hack, etc. To get hired and promoted, you need to be published and journals typically don't publish negative results or replication studies. Again, massive bias for positive results. The outcome of all of this is what is known as the replication crisis, wherein 50% or more of accepted research does not replicate when someone runs the same experiments. Combine this with the incomprehensible waste of time, money, and talent on scientific dead ends like string theory, and the implications are that science is in real trouble.

493 Loved this post. Got my degree in environmental science and DID spend a big proportion of time in the lab looking at particulate matter in air pollution and everything else... but there was TONS of propaganda as well. I went to a religious college where our Christian professor outright stated that it was okay to lie about the severity of climate change, if it made people take the environment more seriously. I was floored.

In the meantime, fake science pervades EVERYTHING. One great example is vaccination. Google up the package insert for the Hepatitis B vaccine and read it--you will see it was "safety monitored" (NOT safety "tested") for only FIVE DAYS before being approved. There are lots of claims that SCIENCE!!!!! shows that vaccines are safe, but if you actually READ the "science," you quickly discover that there IS no true, high quality science done on the issue of vaccine safety. It is astonishing.

Posted by: LK at October 18, 2020 09:39 AM (XtoKU)

494 The 'politicization of science' is only a part of a larger and more insidious movement to establish the precedent that reality itself is, to use the parlance of the age - a "social construct", that we can produce any reality we desire by simply employing sophistical language in describing it - and destroying anyone who speaks a different reality.
