Science Isn't Dead, But It Is Ailing - Part 2
Those trying to overturn Prop. 8 presented numerous "studies" showing that homosexual liaisons were fantastic, more stable than heterosexual ones in fact, and much to be encouraged, much like homosexuality itself. The state - i.e., Jerry Brown - produced bupkis. The presiding judge then overturned Prop. 8, saying that the state had failed to produce any studies rebutting those proffered by those opposed to Prop. 8, and then concluded the farcial pat-a-cake performance by going home to his husband. Now to my mind, this politicization of social "science," with the exception of instances such as that above, is no more concerning than would be the politicization of phrenology, or dowsing.
But what is troubling is the increasing politicization of actual science. The poster child for this, of course, is global warming, and more recently the Covid restrictions. Are masks and social distancing beneficial, not beneficial, sort of beneficial, or utterly necessary, but only for those in churches, political rallies, etc., with those engaging in rioting and looting enjoying immunity from the virus? Somehow, inexplicably, those engaging in left-wing "activities" do not spread the virus. Perhaps carrying an HDTV out of a Best Buy is some sort of protective talisman, a contemporary equivalent of a rabbit's foot or a St. Christopher medal. Those are just high-profile instances of the politicization of science. Meanwhile, below the radar, the rot is spreading rapidly on less well-known fronts. For example, the proliferation of science and technology "studies," as well as engineering "studies" provides leftists - and these areas are exclusively leftist domains - with the patina of science, technology, and engineering, but without the substance. It gives its practitioners some aura of credibility while they promote leftist agitprop, secure in the knowledge that most people will they are listening to a scientist or an engineer, instead of a jumped-up sociologist. For example, from Wikipedia:Engineering studies is an interdisciplinary branch of social sciences and humanities devoted to the study of engineers and their activities, often considered a part of science and technology studies (STS), and intersecting with and drawing from engineering education research.So, basically, there's no engineering in "engineering studies." We here at Casa Guevara came face to face with this politicization of science problem several years ago, when one of the Guevara spawn contemplated taking an AP high school course entitled "environmental science." He got the reading list and immediately rejected that idea. What was on the reading list, you ask? Articles on the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle, that sort of thing? Not a bit of it. We can definitely do this with all of Scientism. But it does not work. Because the experts (pbut) disallow it.

1) I set up a booth at the county fair with my conservative peeps. Debated some students and a prof. Sow a seed of doubt.
2) Send a pointed letter to a senior politician on the funding side with "why this is failing" and you spent money on this, but the outcome was different. Stop funding failure.
3) Homeschool.
4) Going to school boards is useless, so we need stealth candidates. Elect locally, and clear. I coached one guy, who only lost by a 1,000 votes.
5) Run for office yourself. I almost got run for a Board of Trustees at the state level. Almost. I attended that meeting, and said no, because ... my wife.
6) Competition that succeeds wins over public failure.

About 5 years ago i rented a house to a bunch of engineering students, well 4 of them. They were all studying environmental engineering. So I looked up the graduating class of the year before.
Environmental engineers graduating were more than all the EEs, MEs, CEs, and NEs combined.
That was when I knew we were all fucked in the asshoe... and hard.. and long. This will not end well.

Without a respect for truth and critical thinking, science will turn into nothing more than mysticism.

Trump is apparently winning in Florida so far and his voter registration numbers are well ahead the Dems, which hasn't happened in decades.
It's pointing to Dems blowing their loads early, since turnout voting day will be massively in the R column. If they are tied now or R is ahead, Nov will be ugly.
Give it another week and I'll bet the media starts to sound quite somber.
Probably shift towards 'let's burn everything down' mode.

It really seems that Trump supporters were attacked by BLM/Antifa (and it is impossible at this point to distinquish between the two) who were bused down from Rochester...
Ithaca is home to Ithaca College and Cornell - probably the two most liberal colleges on Earth...yet very few from each school showed up here - because they are in lock down and doing remote learning and aren't even there. Thus the need to do the busing down of Antifa from Buffalo...the liberal colleges can't participate in these protesting idiocies all thanks to Cuomo...ooooh the irony.

I'm a Chem E and it seems like this co-opting goes in waves. In the 90's it was very fashionable to sprinkle "engineer" onto lowly job titles like Sanitation Engineer for a guy that keeps the local hardware store clean. The licensed PE boards go nuts and some places like NC laws are passed about who can call themselves an engineer.

I think there is also more fake but accurate magical thinking now, it's become more of a set of beliefs and dogma, complete with heretics, priests and indulgences. The superstitions and talismans are also much in evidence.
Teach your kids, and any with whom you have influence, to think and learn how to ask/identify questions that dismantle the whole thing. I have had three go through public high school, and we had constant conversations. The youngest was pretty sure her teachers hated her because she would ask an innocuous question that would trigger lightbulbs in the other students, and then they would pile on. Kids like to rebel, don't you know!
They are now working with teens in our church youth group, and ever so gently and gradually dismantling the insanity so many have been sold.

Part of the problem is philosophical, and has been long coming. To the extent that scientists (even the real kind) believe in some sort of objective truth, they usually do so in the watered down form of pragmatism. The test of whether something is true is "whether it works".
The problem is the meaning of "works", and unsound philosophers (e.g., Rorty) have seen that that really amounts to "what is good for us to believe." IOW, "we like the results." From there, any result one finds undesirable, can be discarded for one which one wishes to be true.
Note that C S Lewis saw this in the 1940s.

Long overdue. Because I was born under communism I recognized the indoctrination from elementary school on no matter how subtle. For example the IB program in High School. That was a sneaky one. One of the science teachers at our community college asked me to help her learn how to explain the math in this project she was going to have her students do. It was population-alarmist baloney that assumed population growth is accurately modeled by an exponential function.
I told her that real-life populations do not follow an exponential curve, so she dropped it.
Which should be obvious, otherwise the earth would be overrun with rabbits. Perhaps she's never heard of the logistic function?

What really changed were two world wars, especially WWII, which were fully industrialized and where scientific development was brought into the war effort in a way that hadn't been seen before. Following WWII, the post-war order with large-scale global institutions, domestic bureaucracies, and the constant scientific pressure of the Cold War created a new social place for scientists, as well as a cult of quantification that came to believe in the power of "hard data". Meanwhile, the hard sciences (especially physics) were drifting into more and more esoteric and ephemeral areas. The result was a generation of scientists who increasingly involved themselves in political and social debates where they had no experience or expertise, and because of that were subject to the same infection of poisonous ideas as everyone else. A physicist isn't anymore immune to the notions of critical race theory simply because he has a Ph.D. in physics. And because they were often tucked away in safe jobs in the government or in academia, they were shielded from much of the real world.

God knows hard sciences have their politicos and their grifters who pursue their own aggrandizement with a fervor that would make used car salesmen shake their heads.
But that's true of every endeavor. I think most hard scientists actually are interested in adding to the sum total of knowledge. People who go into the hard sciences surely recognize that doing so entails a lot of hard work and modest pay.

I agree with you to an extent; BUT there was always a safeguard built into the hard sciences. Now that safeguard has been thrown away.
The safeguard is best described in Popper's writings about Falsification. First, *no* idea can be called "scientific" if they can not be falsified (ie, proved or disproved) Ideas that cannot be falsified are Religious, not Scientific. (ie, God Exists) In honest Science, any new finding should be immediately attacked by other scientists who seek to falsify it. ONLY if the new idea stands up under such scrutiny, should it be generally accepted.
But instead, by 2009, we had the climategate controversy and the Researchers saying "No, Critics may NOT see my raw data, they'll just try to discredit it!" Yes, discrediting ideas is what Honest Science is all about. Throw that part out and the entire thing becomes politico-religious nonsense, in every field.
And this is why it really hurts me to know that less than 50% of the Clinical trials for new drugs are repeatable, and the FDA doesn't care. Claude Popper knew - it it's not repeatable, it's just a fraud.

And no - just (sincerely, and appropriately) being in favor of "re-opening" is not nearly enough. It's a perfect analogy with the half-assed, weasel-ish withdrawal from the Paris Accords. "It's not a good deal for us" has nothing to do with "the entire 'issue' is baseless and without scientific merit, and anything done with reference to it is indefensible and inexcusable".
Just kinda sorta being a big pro-growth guy will do nothing to push back Leviathan, which has extended its reach in the last 6 months more than any time in our history (there's literally nothing in any part of American history to compare, unless one makes the ridiculously forced analogies to very short-term WWII rationing, price controls, etc).

Agree, Reagan never whipped up the crowds. But damn I loved listening to him talk. Trump is in your face. Ronald was disarming AF and always came out of nowhere.
I also think the swamp was far, far better at staying hidden, and we didn't see or know what was going on behind the scenes. In retrospect, Reagan was being beat down in similar fashion to Trump by the GOPe. I think after being shot and in his second term that was evident. But it was HW's term that revealed the swamp to me for the first time in all its murky glory.

As ranted about previously, biomedical science has a LOT of problems with reproducibility.
Also, no idea can "proved." It can only be disproven. Ideas that have withstood intense scrutiny without being falsified - so far - are tentatively accepted as valid models. Until an experiment that falsifies them. The notion that science is ever settled is ludicrous.

It appalls me how ignorant my kids are about areas of knowledge that the XO and I take for granted. I had to teach No. 3 son long division because he simply couldn't grasp it the way it was being taught. Me!!! The Liberal Arts, can't pass a science or math class idiot. And his teacher was less than thrilled with me.
And speaking as a Liberal Arts major, I am even more appalled by what passes as Liberal Arts these days.
Years ago, I used to say that what American education needed was to bring back the teachers who trained before WW II. Those old gals (and, yes, the vast majority of them were female) knew how to educate a packed classroom. My mother got her teaching certificate in the early '60s and she had absolutely nothing good to say about the younger teachers coming up behind her. She thought they were lazy, undisciplined, and ignorant of what they were supposed to be teaching.

My best friend's dad was an Architect. Took me on a drive in his white Porsche around Silver Spring, Rockville, and Gaithersburg Maryland. He took me to about 4-5 buildings he personally designed, not built. Architects don't build, they design.
His professional liability insurance back then was well into the 100's of millions of dollars.
I decided to smoke pot for a year instead.

I reviewed extensively in academia, on average, a paper a day.
I'd have rejected their paper out of hand, unread, for refusal to deposit their raw data and data reduction algorithms as supplementary material.
A crystallographer at Caltech used to turn up incorrect crystallographic papers by analysis of the supplementary material that every reputable journal demanded (usually amounting to hundreds of pages). That's crystallography. About as hard a science as you're going to find. Usually the problem was misassignment of the space group.

I always point to the downfall of the conservation of parity in 1956. Conservation of parity (in short, that atoms didn't know whether they were pointing up or down) was on a par with conservation of energy in physics until two Chinese guys at the National Bureau of Standards showed definitively the parity was NOT conserved in the gamma emissions of 60-cobalt (IIRC).

Sounds awfully familiar. I even went so far as getting an AA in architecture (only because I bailed). Switched universities. A couple of things made me change my mind.
One was seeing one of the young architects at my parent's architect's firm digging a ditch for a french drain with the Mexicans in the rain. The other was seeing what he'd been working on in the office for 5 years. Basically drawing door jamb details.
About 5 years after I graduated I had my own business.

Science is about constructing models to understand observations.
Think about an auto mechanic. A car's battery keeps discharging overnight. First conjecture: maybe the battery is failing. Experiment: disconnect the battery, charge it up, and check it the next day. Result: no problem.
First conjecture is rejected. Maybe there's a parasitical drain on the battery. Experiment: interpose an ammeter between the battery's anode and the connection to the car's circuit. Result: the mechanic measure 800 ma. Uh oh. Something is drawing a shitload of current from the battery.
Second conjecture: it's one of the car's circuits. Which one? Start pulling fuses and measuring the parasitical current. When you finally pull one and the parasitical current drops, it's THAT circuit.
What's on that circuit? Etc. Now we're narrowing down where the problem arises.
That is a prosaic example of the scientific method, at which auto mechanics are very proficient indeed. Much more so than many liberals who would deprecate their intellectual prowess, and could never find the problem on their own.

Maximum Cruise speed on that 757 is going to be about 550 mph, with 525-ish being the more normal, fuel-conserving power setting.
The 747 is still the fastest large passenger jet in the skies, with the ability to cruise at 645 mph, and burning absolutely insane quantities of fuel in the doing.
625 is the more common power setting, and on long trans Pacific flights, that might come down to 600, just to maximize fuel economy.
Our commenter "CitationX Driver" would be more of an expert here, but the Cessna Citation X he pilots is about as fast as the 747, but without the incredible range of the Jumbo.
I'm thinking A.F. 1 is getting President Trump to these rallies at the upper end of the envelope.

Heh. Many years ago, I spent several summer months in Uranium City, Saskatchewan, doing surveys at several old mine sites. We stayed in an abandoned house, of which there were many, the main mine and mill having been closed. Needless to say, sacks of ore samples were everywhere.
One day, a knock at the door, a cute little girl in a hard hat. "I'm here to do a radon survey for the Federal Government." I said, "You know, you are wasting your time. We are geologists, with radioactive ore samples on the premises, and any readings you get will be completely spurious." And she went away.

I had a 94 with the six. That was a great truck, but it had FI so not simple. Yes, more fuel efficient than a carb, but once again, electronics are involved.
The Datsun 1600 pickup had a carb, points, and those tie down hooks welded around the outside of the bed. Simple, and elegant.

that engine went away with the "new" F-150; they lowered the hood and "rounded" the front end; the 300 Straight Six was too tall to package under the re-designed sheet metal
I was pissed about it for over a decade

In the meantime, fake science pervades EVERYTHING. One great example is vaccination. Google up the package insert for the Hepatitis B vaccine and read it--you will see it was "safety monitored" (NOT safety "tested") for only FIVE DAYS before being approved. There are lots of claims that SCIENCE!!!!! shows that vaccines are safe, but if you actually READ the "science," you quickly discover that there IS no true, high quality science done on the issue of vaccine safety. It is astonishing.
