A TALE OF THREE PEAKS- IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES [Muldoon]

colororado pass.jpg

In Colorado, between Ouray and Silverton, lies Red Mountain Pass, a narrow treacherous winding mountain road through the historic silver mining district. On one side is a sheer cliff and on the other side is a several hundred foot plunge into the ravine. Along the way are three peaks named Red Mountain #1, #2 and #3. I have often pondered how silly it would be to try to drive this road with your windshield blacked out, using only the curves of the road in the rearvview mirror to guide your steering. I tell you that story so that I can tell you this story:

With that in mind, let's revisit COVID in Colorado again. Colorado's Health Department graphs indicate that just like Red Mountain Pass, there have been three peaks of COVID "cases"since April. I would like to compare the three periods corresponding to these three peaks and dig into the numbers a little bit. Lets look at Peak #1, the week of April 12-18, Peak #2, the week of July 5-11, and Peak #3, the week of Sept. 27-Oct 3.

COVID TESTS (PCR)

CO7day1.jpg

In April (Peak #1), a total of 10,602 PCR tests were reported, and the 7-day overage of new daily positive tests peaked at 452 on April 19.

In mid-July (Peak #2), 58,976 PCR tests were reported,, 5.6 times as many tests as during Week 1. The 7-day average of new daily positive cases peaked at 571 on July 10.
For Week 3, 117,137 PCR tests were reported,, ~twice as many as Peak #2 and over 10 times as many as Peak #1, and behold, the 7-day average of new daily positive cases was hovering at just under 600 (higher than the peak number for either April or July).

TEST POSITIVITY RATE

PCR222.jpg

In Peak #1 (April) test positivity rate exceeded 20%

In Peak #2 (July) test positivity had bumped up slightly to 5.5% from a low of 3.2% in early June.

Now in Peak #3 (October) the positivity rate is less than 4%.

HOSPITALIZATIONS AND DEATHS

April 12-18 there were 1,627 new hospital admissions and 233 COVID deaths.

July 5-11 there were 249 new hospital admissions, up from a minimum of 134/week in May , sevenfold fewer than in April. Deaths in this timeframe maxed at 37/week.

Sept 27-Oct 3 There were 239 new hospital admissions, up from another minimum of 134/week in early September, similar to the July bump and sevenfold fewer than April. There were 35 deaths that week.

Notably, Colorado has had single-digit daily reported COVID-related deaths(7-day average) every day since the end of May.

COdeath1.jpg

COadmissions1.jpg

MASK ORDERS
The governor's initial mask mandate was on July 16, and the latest extension of the order on Oct. 11 coinciding with Peak #2 and Peak #3. There was no mask order during Peak #1

What can we gather from this?

1. When a virus exists within a large population, since many individuals have subclinical infection, the definition of what constitutes a "case" matter greatly. At a baseline prevalence in the range of even 3-5%,, increasing the total number of tests will give a corresponding rise in number of positive tests, irrespective of either the presence of actual disease or infectiousness of an individual.

2. Past trends are not necessarily predictive of future trajectories, especially in a complex dynamic system. Models are NOT real-life data.

3. The individuals being identified in the apparent peaks of July and late September are not getting sick or dying to anywhere near the extent of those in April, indicating that we are tracking merely the residual vestiges of an epidemic that has run its course.

4. Increasing the absolute number of tests run, while producing the illusion of a surge in cases, does not indicate a resurgence of the epidemic. It does not account for the consistently low case positivity rate, deaths and hospitalizations. Where are the second and third peaks for deaths and hospital admissions? They don't exist.

5. A positive PCR test does not equal a diagnosis of COVID.

As pointed out here, in July a minor uptick in hospitalizations prompted an exaggerated model suggesting a huge surge in hospitalizations was imminent, triggering the initial mask mandate. The huge surge never materialized.

I guess "progress" for Colorado is like traveling over Red Mountain Pass with the governor driving while relying solely on the appearance of the road in the rearview mirror, predicting the course of what the road might do. He's jerking the steering wheel back and forth with no idea where he is going. It's time for him to open his eyes

37 I've got to type faster, willowed again.

In short, Michigan has been trending R for a while and things look better than polling might be indicating.
Posted by: Shenanigans
---------
Good info thanks.

This correlates with some other information I've seen in the last day or so.

1) Communities are very important toward voting patterns. A county will tend to vote in a similar voting pattern year over year. If you are doing a poll in a state, you really want to get representative samples from every region or county, otherwise you get bad results. So a registration advantage in counties that voted GOP is going to result in a GOP advantage in the next election.

2) The latest NYT poll of Michigan reports a huge lead for Biden. The problem with that poll is that it also claims that Democrat early votes in Michigan are 3 times higher than GOP early votes. This is not true, there is a service out there that is able to measure partisan voting, even in states like MI and VA that don't report party ID. The true current early vote is 1:1 between the parties.

The current activities of the Biden campaign indicate that they think Michigan is trending their way, similar to how the Trump campaign feels about Ohio. But that is probably a mistake, indications are that SE Michigan is trending similar to NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania.

91 I don't get the urgency from the left. The next time they're in the White House and have control of one or both houses of Congress, they can do all they want with bringing in illegals, packing the court, and making up new states to guarantee an majority going forward. If that's the plan, why not be patient? Sooner or later it will happen and once it does - hello single party rule. No reason to upset the apple cart and drive Joe Normie away. Let him think you're still the part of the working people fighting the rich fatcat republicans.

129 Excellent Muldoon!

Next I'd like to see a breakdown of testing protocol during the peaks to determine the actual hospitalization and mortality.

I'm guessing that in the beginning, only individuals that were presenting extremely severe symptoms were being tested. From that, they manufactured the severity of the virus.

It would be like testing only individuals with open sores on their penis for herpes, then saying that a high percentage of those tested are positive and that most people with herpes will having oozing sores on their penis.

But if you sampled most of society, you'd probably find that very few individuals with herpes are presently exhibiting sores on their penis.

But instead, you test only those presenting symptoms, build a model, and then say anyone contracting herpes is surely doomed to exhibit oozing penis sores.

Create the severity, then apply the false severity to the general public. This was the strategy.

A young lady I used to date is an infectious decease doctor in queens. She has since stopped talking to me because she started dating someone else and thought it was weird, but that's neither here nor there.

But anyways, she said like 90% of her covid deaths were people who were on deaths door anyways, and that 50% of her hospitalizations were (in her words) hypochondriacs who would normally be sent home, but because of hospital policy, they were basically serving as a hotel for.

Apparently, and it makes sense but I've never really thought about it, there are a lot of people out there who show up at the hospital with relatively minor things all the time, and are normally sent home. But I guess they can't send them away during covid times. Anyways, that's been driving hospitalization rates a lot, at least her hospital

139 I was just looking at the Texas COVID Dashboard, in which much the same thing is happening. Big peak in Cases and Fatalities in 1st or 2nd week of July. Fatalities have continued dropping even as case numbers are still rather high.

In July, at the peak, there were about 10,000 new cases per day, and about 250 fatalities per day. (remember Texas population is right at 30 million) Now, cases seem to be coming in at about 4,000 new cases per day, but fatalities are at about 40 per day and still dropping.

I think the best interpretation is that a lot of the cases now are asymptomatic, and also that the population getting them now is generally much younger and much healthier than before, since the at-risk cohort is now being mostly protected. Therefore, fatality rates are falling back in line with a bad flu like H1N1.

I'm starting to think the next six months until late spring 2021 are gonna be even more calamitous than the previous six months since COVID regulations hit the US.

Oh, and even the meaningless "case" surge in the latter peak was not what "triggered the mask mandate" - that would be ignorance of relevant science and history, totalitarian impulses, and awareness of a dumbed-down compliant populace that will hop to your every capricious pointless ukaz.

Further thoughts: It's weird here in the far northern suburbs of Cols. I never wear a mask. Today, I went grocery shopping and went into a restaurant to grab take out.

I was the only one without a mask on, and yet, no one made any effort to avoid me, no one gave me a dirty look or said anything negative to me and no one made any pretense of standing six feet away.

I don't know what to make of it other than most folks are just tired of fighting the powers that be and go along to get along. It's sad.

We continued to drive in the pitch black and about 2 or 3 am my car started to sputter and finally just quit. We were in the middle of nowhere and decided to just sleep in the car until morning and take it from there. I woke up at first light to the most beautiful site of the Rockies surrounding me. We had broke down on the Raton Pass. Apparently below sea level Louisiana boys didn't think about adjusting the carb to allow for the thin air and flooded the car. Fortunately for us there was a weigh station or something like that about a mile away where we called a mobile mechanic who changed the fuel filter and adjusted the carb.

161 I've done that road by motorcycle in summer and winter by car. What a ride.

First time, on a bike, I had the great fortune of following a local worker in a big dump truck for the long tortuous set of neverending twisties down into Silverton.

He was probably descending the road for the thirteenth time that day, making it like a thousand thirteen lifetime, and taking it as fast as he could.

If on a bike, you hope for a lead like that. Without it, you gotta look at the road, way out at the limit of vision, and you go where you look. Sightsee the San Juans, and it's down that 3,500 foot bank you go.

But with a noisy big lead, you can sightsee plenty, using your ears and peripheral vision to keep the bike steady-center-lane.

A memorable one was a bluebird day late winter early spring, Ms K and I beginning after an overnight in Cortez, and except for a few parked cars up at the passes, backcountry skiers, we were the only car on the road, Durango to Ouray.

The bulk of the new infections currently seem to be happening in the Hispanic community; perhaps it is because multiple generations typically live in the same household.

So we didn't try the mountain pass. Maybe another chance before winter sets in, but if not, next year.

251 The clown governors, and county hacks ordering the mask mandates are not doctors, nor are they scientists, and they are certainly not statisticians. All those professions take lots of hard stuff like mathematics. They are the glorified versions of the shitass busybody who aspires to be on the HOA so she can tell her neighbors what color drapes are allowed, or punish someone for having a bicycle in the front yard. They wield power because they love to wield power.

Despite the huge amount of information out there indicating the uselessness of masks, and lock downs, few people bother to inform themselves. They go through life between the smartphone and the telescreen. So you see people alone on the street, out on the bike path, or even at the beach all muzzled up like farm animals. These poor folks are living in terror. Worse they believe they occupy the moral high ground and are justified in participating in this humiliating ritual.

I had to get a handful of items at the local hardware store today. I hung a mask from my ear and did my shopping. When I got to the checkout, the masked up girl behind the plexiglass barrier said, "Sir please put your mask on." That was it. I looked at her, and said, "Do you want to sell me this stuff, or enforce the mask thing?" She looked away, and rung up the order. While I was putting my ATM card in the reader I felt a breeze on my face. The girl turned a fan on me to blow the cooties away. I was half way between pity for this terrified creature, and rage at what these fuckers in charge have done to us. Mostly rage. There will be a reckoning for these bastards, and a special place in hell for them when it comes.

There is so, so much wrong with so, so much of the whole govt./public health response (duh), and the most worrisome thing is it starts at the top. The entire framework in which every aspect of this situation is viewed is incorrect, and that's not going to change unless/until the CDC/WH restore some common sense and science to it all.

A few lucky states like FL and SD and others have leaders competent and responsible enough to junk the false framework and get on with life. But the large populations in many other states suffering under the idiotic govts. they've elected will suffer much more/longer if their vandal governors continue to have top-cover from DC.

290 For the past several months have been going through the TV series Star Trek: Deep Space 9 for the first time. Last night got through most of Episode 9 of Season 6 "Statistical Probabilities" before falling asleep (a lot of insomnia lately owing to anxiety).

It's about three other brilliant mutants like Dr. Bashir who use statistical probability models to predict that the Dominion will crush the Federation -- and failure to surrender will result in a war and 900 billion deaths for the Federation.

Amazing how far we've come and just a couple decades: Captain Sisko won't tolerate talk of surrender -- saying he won't ask a an entire generation for the Federation to surrender their freedoms, even if it results in all that death, and that he'd rather go down fighting.

This view was held by the vast majority of Americans even in the '90s. Today, I'm guessing it would be a minority ... My, how far we've fallen. This episode should be mandatory viewing for the past couple generations ... not that their brainwashing and indoctrination can be overcome that easily now.

As long as he has the truly outrageous buffoon of Redfield at CDC, ignoring a century of observation and 7 decades of randomized controlled trials showing no value to anything like a mask mandate, and citing some ridiculous anecdote from a hair salon in MO - he's got cover.

The "vaccine" thing may be the most disastrous bungle at the WH/CDC level. There's no need for a vaccine, and dim prospects of a safe and effective one - but the nanosecond it was mentioned as a priority - boom, THAT will now be the last, and most disastrous, confected goalpost for the authoritarians.

As prospects for renewal or repair look bleak, not even sure one can say that one valuable thing out of all this is the revelation/confirmation that govt. at all levels and public health in particular are technically grossly incompetent, and power-mad vandals. And the character of a large % of the American people has been on display, and that's the darkest indictment of all.

I try not to get pissed at those who were so much smarter than me, back when this all started, when they mocked and scolded me for saying that these mask orders would never end. I fail - I do get pissed at them. Granted, I don't try too hard not to.

364 >>> Indiana Republican Governor extends mask mandate indefinitely.
Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at October 14, 2020 07:22 PM (63Dwl)

=====

Fortunately, our city ordnance has a loophole. Mask exemption for those with breathing difficulties. No medical proof required. So I don't where a mask.

Now, I'm not proud of what happened not just 20 min ago, but I am tired of this Covid BS!: So I come out the door from picking up a pizza and the 60 year old lady that was two customers in front of me is still sitting in her car, which is next to mine. I noticed that she is giving me the death stare all the way to my car, and continues to do so after I get in. I mouthed "what?" to her. She says something back, so I roll down my window. But she doesn't roll down hers but keeps talking (I was happy to explain to her, politely, why I'm not wearing a mask). She keeps giving me death glare, then pulls out. Obviously, this woman thinks I'm actually killing people by not wearing a mask!

I thought, fine. She thinks it's a good idea to make herself the mask police, maybe she should have first considered how I might respond. And my response was to follow her to her home. Not that I even considered doing anything. I just wanted her to know actions are not without consequences. Not my proudest moment, but again, this shit has got to stop!
