116 I was surprised at the date for this painting. I expected something around the 20th century, not the 18th century. The dark background with areas of blood red could stand for Oedipus' mangled eyes. His posture is one of rage against fate and despair that he needs assistance to move even though that torment is now ending. Part of the tragedy of Oedipus, at least to me, is that he was a good, wise man betrayed by fate. The mourning and adoration of the women demonstrates that aspect of his story.

This is an hugely effective and evocative image. I need to learn more about the artist. Thanks, CBD, for today and yesterday's art.

BTW, Looking at this painting and some others on his Wiki page, I wonder if he was an influence on Frank Frazetta a couple of centuries later. The scenes, posing, perspective and lighting remind me strongly of Frazetta.

Early voting is meaningless, except where it shows that Democrats are not getting the 50 point margin that they need to overcome the massive election day numbers Trump will get. Dump everything out at once, and it becomes easy to ignore.

Get some flashy stuff talked about, then add more onto it a bit later, and then more, and this is the sort of thing that builds.

It's the same idea as newspapers dedicating a single story on page 5 for something as opposed to having something on page 1 of every section of the newspaper about it. Think the editorial meeting in Superman Returns. "Fashion! Is that a new suit?"

I think the Hunter Biden computer story is exactly as it's being
presented. The repair shop should have a signed work order. But
clearly the timing of the exposure was manipulated.

Posted by: creeper at October 16, 2020 09:56 AM (XxJt1)

That's right it's not the evidence of the crimes they committed that's the problem in this story, but the provenance of the source of the data that is the real story here.........
It does not matter how we found out about the computer.....some crook stole some other crooks computer and slipped it into the public domain. Crap, the Alphabet Agencies probably do things like this to PDT alla time and no one questions it.

It's what Breitbart taught O'Keefe.

That's a perfect analogy. Back in the pre Goodell years when the NFL was watchable, the Dolphins and Dan Marino were having a shootout against the Chargers and Dan Fouts. Neither side could stop the other so with about five minutes to go and down by a point, Fouts when on a ball control drive that ate up the clock before scoring a td with less than 30 seconds to go. It required flawless execution and balls of steel but that's what was delivered while the Dolphins chafed away on the sidelines.

Rudy's an experienced prosecutor and, even with his annoying mannerisms, knows how to present a case to even the most jaded.

I think my skepticism, such as it is, is because we've been hearing about Ukraine for a long, long time now, with Rudy (and Beck) in the middle of all the promised bombshells.

It would be nice if someone laid it all out for us. In fairness, Beck did a whiteboard (probably up on YT), but its complexity made it almost useless from a political standpoint.

So really, it would be well for someone with real political mojo to pull out the actual takeaways and lay them out in a brief, comprehensible, and politically effective way. There seem to be too may side issues, and this guy with his abandoned property PC is just one more. The odious nature of Hunter himself is another; if he's a conduit for government corruption then that's his only importance to the story and his personal faults are just a sideshow. (But entertaining! But I don't need to be entertained at this particular moment in history.)

And, historically, Democrats tend to outpace Republicans rather massively on early voting in general with Republicans generally doing the same on election day.

If Democrats are just running even after a couple of weeks of early voting, then there is very likely something wrong with their get out the vote efforts.

I do not think they will have one, I have been opining this for about a year now. Why? because, in military terms, they have no fire control. Every time they get something that they think is damaging, they blurt it out everywhere, and then it falls apart. Like that stupid "Trump talks bad about the Military in Private!" story. That was prepped to be some kind of October Surprise, and yet they couldn't wait, so they popped it off two months early. of course it fizzled, and now everyone has forgotten it. There's nothing they can do that they haven't already tried. A couple months ago some women in the UK papers came up with another "Trump raped me! But it was 30 years ago and I forgot to ever tell anybody about it til yesterday!!!" That was so pathetic that it never got any reprints anywhere.

So if it's riding around on that story, there's a chance Jimmy might actually pick up on the story about Daddy Whorebucks' corruption.

The salacious stuff we see as a sideshow is the only reason this leak is dangerous to Biden. It's the main event as far as the idiots we permit to vote in this country are concerned.

We recently had an all hands where the executive bluntly told everyone to STFD and SFTU about politics as he would send the next two people (the snitch as well as the partisan little bitch) that brought up politics in the workplace regardless of which party of opinion.
And the last straw was a fucking Sunnyvale, CA lefty bitching about living in Alabama with conservatives. The real lesson of 2012 was, don't go with a candidate that much of the base despises, just because he's "Electable", and you think squishes in the middle will vote for him.

funny that sounds like one of the candidates today.

552 Mollie Hemingway made a good observation last night. She said the media is making a huge mistake by going attack dog on Trump and throwing Biden softballs. Trump looked strong and in control last night; Biden is weak and coddled.

The media can't see it because they talk only to each other, but the contrast is very evident - and makes Trump into the underdog.

Mollie also noted that the ordinary people asking Trump questions (some of whom were obvious Dems, like the "pro-life millennial") treated him with more respect than he gets from the media. They think their snarling makes them look "tough." It makes them look like shrews and bullies.

587 Anything could happen. There's still two weeks left before any bombshells get dismissed by everyone as desperation. Comey announcing Hillary was again under investigation was juuuust inside the foul line four years ago. Another two days, maybe three, and people would have dismissed it.

So, two weeks left for Dems to try another bombshell. The problem with that is, Trump has been Teflon Don for five years now. The only thing that has come close to chinking his armor is the COVID response, and I think he's weathered that and reestablished his support. And besides, any new bombshell will just make Covid an issue less-covered by the media, which only helps Teflon Don.

The next debate, I assume, will be foreign policy-driven. There could not be a better place for Trump to seal the deal and land the knock out blow. He can go on defense, talking about american strength, making NATO pay their fair share, mid east peace, nobel prize nominations. And he can on offense, hitting Biden on Hunter/Ukraine, hitting the Dems on the impeachment sham while it was Hillary working with Russia. There's not going to be a moment for Biden to get a word in edgewise.

Also, the Dems have had no fire control, they've been too undisciplined to hold anything back. They're not going to have any "October Surprise", because they've long ago wasted all of their ammunition. 621 Regarding party voting in WI and MI (or other places where they do not track by party), most of you do not know it but your voter history file is publicly available including all votes in general elections, special elections, primaries etc. Generally, you can be considered a Rep. or Dem. (and a likely voter) based on whether you consistently vote in a Rep. or Dem. primary and research services track this along with campaigns.

There is a free online service (run by a Dem firm though, so you get Dem talking points) that tracks early voting in WI and MI by party using this. They are pretty accurate.

This is why you can trust the Trafalgar poll and not the others. Other polls say D/R early vote turnout in MI is 3:1, but actual early turnout is 1:1. Ergo, the polls showing a Biden lead there are wrong. Trafalgar took the time to check their results against the early vote as a validation step.

Shockingly, a lot of polls, even ones in states that provide early vote results by party, don't check their polls against them.

I don't think he'll win NY, but if it's even close, Dems will be sweating bullets. A close race in states the Dems normally win in a cakewalk will be a very, very good sign.

And, even if the Dems pull out a win in blue states, closer margins might embolden conservatives to start running decent candidates there. It seems like a problem in Cali is that in many of those districts, the leftist nitwits run unopposed because who wants to waste time and money on a hopeless cause?

Masks *never* protected the wearer. Tucker's show even got a nasty letter from the CDC saying that the CDC has never said that the mask protects the wearer.

However, Tucker was able to show a high-up in the CDC saying "this mask protects me better than a vaccine". Which was funny. But it *has* always been the official policy of the CDC that masks protect the other person not the wearer.

However, if I don't have Covid, they don't even do that.

Yeah, that Trump guy. Whenever he takes a stand on an important issue, then...we automatically lose. Because EVERYONE hates Trump. I've sent him money, and I hate him too. It's masochism all the way down.

He's going to lose all 50 states on Election day./sarc

I get it, really. Don't fight back, just accept whatever happens, because, in the end....blah, blah, blah.

Magic solutions are everywhere.

And jimmah in 76 was the last Dem I ever pulled the lever for.
Posted by: Nevergiveup at October 16, 2020 11:07 AM (85Gof)

Gerald Ford was hardly an inspiring figure. And Jimmah ran as a Southern Conservative Democrat, even though he never governed as one.
Posted by: Tom Servo at October 16, 2020 11:09 AM (Kpl3J)

Any Republican candidate for POTUS would have had a nearly impossible run in '76, since it was the first Presidential election after Watergate.

Much like the election of '64, no one was going to kick the sainted JFK's veep out of office, no matter how much of a corrupt, crass asshole LBJ was.

710 And, even if the Dems pull out a win in blue states, closer margins might embolden conservatives to start running decent candidates there. It seems like a problem in Cali is that in many of those districts, the leftist nitwits run unopposed because who wants to waste time and money on a hopeless cause?
Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V

The rule in California is a "jungle" primary, where only the two top vote getters in primaries go on to the general election; usually two Democrats now. I don't know whether that is for ALL elections or just statewide elections (governor, state office holders, Senators). That kind of discourages Republicans from running, because it usually is just a perfunctory beating at the poles.

711 689 Dave in Fla,
I heard of the company in MI and WI but did not know whether it was free or not so did not pimp it. I've used ecological regression in the past using precinct data when I used to do campaign research dealing with race and turnout but have been out of it for a long while. Basically, to avoid an ecological fallacy, you take precincts that are 100% for one side or the other to establish the outer bounds and then can correct data based on those boundaries for more normally distributed precincts on issues like turnout, vote choice, etc.

When I worked in congressional and local campaigns in the past, the voter list and absentee lists were used manually in good campaigns to ensure voting by reliable voters when most folks still had landlines and answered the phone. Most campaigns had an outreach office to get new voters and a separate office to get reliable voters to the polls.

712 If one may ask delicately, how did the question of uncertainty regarding garrett's sexual preferences arise?
Posted by: some guy out west

It's just a running gag. Everybody knows garrett is straight. Ace feeds into it, and he's kidding.

Ace lives somewhere in NYC, and garrett offered to have him come live with him out west, I think garrett lives in Montana. The implication is that they would be an "odd couple". And then, away we go!!

And garrett is a great guy for constantly playing along with the joke. One of the better and wittier posters here at AoS.

Posted by: Bozo Conservative....outlaw in America at October 16, 2020 11:27 AM (vcOmj)

713 711, What I would advise Republicans to do in California and Washington is to create a new state based party that is loosely affiliated with the Republican party for federal elections like the DFL in MN or the Conservative Party (what is left of it) in NY. In places where no real conservatives are running, you can endorse the better of the two running as well.

There is little value in the derelict corpse of the Republican party in either state given a blanket primary that essentially is a uniparty decision.

One party states stagnate and eventually the only choice is to totally remove the existing party from office. It is easier if a party does not have baggage to the past and can act as a reform party. Heck, name it that.

714 Nate Silver is an idiot then. He is praising Nate Cohn's NYT polls, and I can 100% prove they are wrong. Cohn's polls have SW PA, Central PA, and SE Ohio voting for Biden. That borders on delusional.

FL and GA are over, Trump will win them both.
Posted by: Dave in Fla

Nate Silver is a pompous ass, that's for sure.

SE Ohio is actually Appalachia type country. And I could see them tilting Democrat for all the goodies the Democrats are always promising. That is also the thinnest populated part of the state.
Parts of the big cities of Ohio will go Democrat; Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown, Akron, Columbus....
The suburbs and exurbs will go Trump. Bigly. As will most of the rural part of the state

Posted by: Bozo Conservative....outlaw in America at October 16, 2020 11:31 AM (vcOmj)

715 I keep hearing stories of Republicans in places like Washington who went from solid conservative nominees at the state level and losing narrowly to complete squishes who lose bigly.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, levelling Metropolis to save it at October 16, 2020 10:56 AM (+rZgP)

The biggest mistake they kept making for the last few cycles is hiring people like Rick Wilson and Steve Schmidt to run their campaigns. Idiots Donk collaboratorswho are only in it for the grift.

716 Two "externalities" about masks.

One, the basic claim has been, all along, that a mask does not filter virus out of the air that you breathe in. You can't avoid the airborne virus by using a mask. A mask protects other people from virus in your liquids if you cough or sneeze. That's all it does, so any benefit accruing to just you as an individual depends on all those other people controlling their snot. Not a pretty thought.

Two, this is like coal miners all smoking. People who use masks most consistently are the ones who "have to": they are in front-line medical care, for instance, or high-density public contact jobs. They could be getting the virus because of all that contact, not because of the mask they are wearing.

Not a lot of real science or even good sense left in these screaming matches. Everybody's mind is made up, and they are intent on calling the other fellow names. This has not brought out the best in our character.
