Melania is sitting with her kids. Of course. She really loves kids. It's lovely really. While International ad campaign encourages families to have only one child: Part of an effort to promote a "small family norm." The One Planet, One Child campaign, with eye-catching billboards in Vancouver, Colorado and Minnesota, uses images such as traffic jams, wildfires, calving icebergs and suburban sprawl to drive home its message of overpopulation. "The most loving gift you can give your first child is to not have another," one transit advertisement in Vancouver declares; another shows an image of a rock-climbing couple with the caption: "We Chose Childfree!" Their most loyal constituency live in big cities which are suffering hte most due to violence and the shut down of their way of life. No bars, restaurants, theater, travel all curtailed. Why live in the city if yu can't enjoy city life. So, everyone who voted for Trump will still vote for Trump and a lot of people who voted for Hilary will now vote for Trump. I believe majority leader can indeed move executive calendar (nominations) items directly to the floor. Don't know Judiciary Comm. rules. Confirmation hearings are a modern contrivance, for the most part. She was recently confirmed for her current appointment. Apart from discussing any of her rulings in that gig, obviously no reason to spend much time on her nomination.
Oh. And it's a perfect instant reminder of how derailed the system is, how absurdly over its head and outside its proper areas of authority the entire judiciary is, that one could even ask a question like "how does she stand on the Xth Amendment?". They swear to defend and uphold the document, including the amendments, when they're sworn in. If they don't like the constitution as it is, they ought not to take the job where such an oath is standard. They should stay outside and work to amend it to their liking. Two separable disastrous developments. Collapse of integrity in the judiciary (not upholding their oaths, abandoning integrity, usurping legislative - and now even executive, including *national security* executive - powers). And the collusion of the legislative and executive branches in all this. I get that we're in a tactical situation, mid-combat, so you fill the trench with people who will perform, more/less, adequately. But the absurdity of caring about a justice's personal views on things over which they have no business having any influence - prominently including the meaning of clear constitutional language - never ceases to grate. I was reading something about the history of Supreme Court nominations. All through the 19th century, it was basically POTUS nominated someone, and the Senate would just have a vote, up or down. Individual senators might meet with the nominee to see if they liked the cut of their jib, and they would discuss it amongst themselves, and then vote. Going through the judiciary committee didn't start until the early 20th century, maybe the 1930s. And the modern process of hearings for nominees where they asked questions didn't start until the '50s. So Cocaine Mitch should just doing the 19th Century way. The most painful part of the lock down was having to wash my hair myself. I love my hair but it's very kinky and thick. I'm so glad salons are open now. It takes my stylist longer to deal with my hair than her other clients', but at least I don't have to do anything. Also, if she's willing to do styles like twists or cute feminine cornrows or braids, then those will make life easier, too. Good luck! Posted by: Oldcat at September 26, 2020 06:04 PM That was the expected outcome even before the Kavanaugh circus. My memory may be off, but in 2018 GOP was expected to win bigly in the Senate because Dems had to defend so many seats. 55 Senators might've been the prediction? They got 53. I'm just saying that after Kavanaugh the Dems should've been utterly laid waste in the election. But they weren't. Got the House. Didn't lose as badly in the Senate as some were expecting. Still have the chip on the table that The Senile One doesn't make it to Nov 3, as a candidate anyway. I think my odds have gone from Hail Mary, to long shot, to just an underdog and now, getting close to the margin of error. We are talking about the Democrat candidate for US President. #221 Dems threaten to "boycott" the hearings.
Is a quorum necessary? How many is a quorum? The Vote is different from Hearings, but anyway: Senate Quorum is 50+1 (unlike some places where it is 60% or 2/3), and VP cannot "break ties" at 50 AFAIU... BUT, you need someone there from the opposition to request a roll call. So 50, it seems. Wikipedia (Standing Rules of the US Senate): The Constitution provides that a majority of the Senate constitutes a quorum to do business. Under the rules and customs of the Senate, a quorum is always assumed to be present unless a quorum call explicitly demonstrates otherwise. Any senator may request a quorum call by "suggesting the absence of a quorum"; a clerk then calls the roll of the Senate and notes which members are present. In practice, senators almost always request quorum calls not to establish the presence of a quorum, but to temporarily delay proceedings without having to adjourn the session. http://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/RL/96-452 Posted by: Logic is as Logic does at September 26, 2020 06:18 PM (BBWrU) 647

Sloppy might just be able to make it through the debate without Nadlering his pants or going full potato. He's going to be talking about the same shit he's been babbling about for forty years, how fucking hard is that? The bad part is that this is the one and only chance that any "real" questions could be asked of Sloppy, but Wallace is going to drop his trousers and let Sloppy get balls deep. The other two debate moderators are essentially agents of the socialist party, so their entire effort will be focused on ripping into the president. Rosendale is a reliable republican vote but as an import and a developer from Maryland he gives too much ammo to the Left. I've live in Montana for 42 years and I a still and outsider of sorts.

Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler The only thing about that song that really got me scratching my head was that it was written by the guys from ABBA. I liked it, and I really didn't much care for ABBA. I see that the name Laura Linney came up a lot early on in this thread. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but she got nekkid in the movie "Love, Actually". It was nice!
Not a great movie, by any means, but between Linney being briefly nekkid and a really cute, perky little British blonde spending a fair bit of time nekkid, this is a chick flick that really offers something for dudes, as well. Senators and television, yo. Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at September 26, 2020 05:43 PM (XrCyE) IIRC, Abe Fortas's confirmation hearning clocked in at 15 minutes. (Of course, he resigned under a cloud four years later, and if you read the entry for Mr. Fortas in the Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States, the whole reason LBJ put him on the court was sketchy to begin with. But this IS LBJ we are talking about.) Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at September 26, 2020 07:21 PM (4JLkY) 694

My mother lived to be 84, never had any dementia, just the usual old folks' forgetfulness for names and where they put things. Nevertheless, starting many years before that, it became clear that she remembered all her male descendants' names by number, that is, birth order.
This was easy in my family, because she had 3 sons and 1 daughter (I'm the middle son) and each of my brothers had 3 sons and no daughters, while I have no kids. When my mother was maybe 60, I noticed that she often mixed up the names of her 3 sons and 6 grandsons, but never their numbers. She would call me by the name of her 2nd or 5th grandson, and vice versa, but never by any other name. We were all obviously #2 in our set of 3 in her mind. And she would call her oldest son by the name of his oldest son (#1 grandson) or our younger brother's oldest son (#4 grandson) and vice versa, but - not to bore your with all the permutations! - would never mix up any of the #1s with the #2s or the #3s. I still remember the time I said "Mom, you just called me Jonathan and you just called Jonathan Craig! You remember us by our numbers, not our names?!" She had to admit it, and was a bit embarrassed, since she hadn't noticed. It was entirely unconscious.
