Seems Like Old Times: Getty Images Publishes Photo of Joe Biden... With a Halo

Deb Heine tells me she was looking for a single Getty image -- just one -- which showed Biden looking sleepy or out of it, but strangely enough -- despite him looking like that all the time -- she couldn't find such an image in Getty.

But she did find this Obama-esqe halo picture.

And then she found that a lot of DC photographers decided to try for the Halo effect:

Meanwhile, someone else sent me this picture, of Gropy Joe comin' all up on Ruth Bader Ginsburg from behind, at her confirmation hearings twenty seven years ago.

I had something similar happen not even two hours ago in a drugstore here in NC. Walked in (maskless) for a pack of mints and I'm the only one anywhere near the counter. The little asian woman working behind the counter had her mask down to drink from a bottle of water and quickly pulled the mask up and capped the water when I walked in. I smiled and winked and said "keep drinking the water, it's okay", and she laughed and put her water beside her so we could carry out the business interaction face to face.

Especially since the hearings have nothing to do with any actual "vetting," and are really just opportunities for asshole senators to preen and posture for the cameras.

If I were Trump I'd just tell the senators that if they have questions for the nominee they should submit them in writing and she will reply in writing, as appropriate. Eliminate the cameras, and most of the questions will go away, since the senators already know the answers, and are just using the questions as plot devices in their "vetting" theater acts.

In California, the EDD (Employment Development Department, which gives out the unemployment bennies) has been found to be so dysfunctional that an audit report literally concludes that the only solution is to burn it down and start from scratch. Recommendation is to shut down all bennies and commuications and functions for two weeks and come back. Haven't read the whole report so I'm not sure what's supposed to happen in two weeks to make it functional when it comes back, but the internal findings are that it's unfixable.

Of course you know people were furiously warning, resigning, blowing whistles, and trying to get this out in public for decades, and now it's collapsed like an unmaintained bridge.

Almost every major policy goal they've achieved since the New Deal was done through SCOTUS, aside from a couple of major exceptions (The Great Society, ACA).

They've come to rely almost entirely on the Courts to move the country's policy. It worked as long as the other side never really fought it.

That changed in the 90s, and it's been a slow fight ever since to basic parity. Timing right now suddenly favors us, and it's nice.

(Although pigeons are capable of gripping thin perches with their feet, they prefer landing on flat surfaces, so the pigeon-guards were somewhat, but not entirely, successful.)

But this era is ALSO the exact time that Christianity first went mainstream, and starting in the late Roman Empire there also appeared the first statues of Christian saints, Jesus, Mary, etc. And those early statues were also outfitted with pigeon-guards -- a circle of metal hovering above the top of the head (attached at the back).

Skip a few centuries, an the early medieval painters saw these statues and the whole context of why they had these circles over their heads was lost to history. They did not understand that they were pigeon-guards, but thought they indicated "holy status," and represented some kind of "nimbus" over the heads of saints and messiahs. So when they began to paint religious scenes, they included these "halos" over the head of the holy figures, to indicate that they were holy.

This tradition in painting then took on a life of its own, even after statues of saints generally no longer had pigeons guards any more.

And by the Renaissance, it had become a de facto standard attribute of all holy figures, and remains so to this day.

Not every historian agrees with this theory entirely. but most agree it was at least a contributing factor to the development of the "halo" in art and popular culture.
