The Morning Rant - Misanthropic Edition

gorilla-middle-finger-bob-pitchford-bristol-zoo-1.jpg

***

Unfortunately, I'm not 29 any more. I'm old enough to begin stories, "When I was a youngster." And so goes the story.

Early on in life I was attracted to politics and current events. I haven't changed over the years. I learned early on the politics was a "combat sport". See Burr vs. Hamilton or just ask Zombie Barry Goldwater.

When I was a kid the only danger in the political arena were the combatants. Average Joe and Jane Citizen were not in danger of rooting for one team over the other. As a kid it was safe to display campaign yard signs and bumper stickers.

The first election I could participate in was Reagan vs. Carter. I'm proud to say I voted for Reagan. Hell, I even had a Reagan bumper sticker on my car. I've had Reagan, Bush, Dole, Bush, Romney and Trump stickers over the years. But not this year. Probably never again.

The Friday leading into the Labor Day weekend the Fabulous Mrs. Mis Hum came home for lunch and asked me the following question, "When did you put up the Trump yard sign?"

My response, "I didn't do that."

"Oh come on," she jested, "when did you get the sign and when did you put it up?"

Someone came and put the sign up near our mailbox. I live on a dead end street. I have a lengthy driveway where you can't see our house. We were headed away for the weekend. I took the sign down. Although I live in a Red area, the thoughts of a deranged leftist vandalizing our home was a little too much for me.

My rant? I still can't believe the tenets of political choice and free expression places one's life and property in peril. Even in rural flyover country one now fears his or her choices regarding political advocacy. I don't see it improving in my lifetime. I wonder just how long before the United States of America makes the Balkan Wars look like a playground spat?

Have you altered your political lifestyle in the age of Trump? If you have what have you done?

Just another day at the beach if you wear a MAGA hat.

The "Defund The Police" movement continues to make one laugh out loud. On one hand you have Princess of White Privilege Alyssa Milano calling the cops on somebody shooting tree rats squirrels with a pellet gun.

We gained a little bit of respect for anti-NRA activist Alyssa Milano when she admitted to Sen. Ted Cruz that she lives in a two-gun household — good for her for having the means to perforate some criminal who would break into her home and harm her family. But when she heard what she believed to be gunshots the other day, she dialed 911 right away, sparking a massive emergency response at her home.

While we have a small business owner in Minneapolis being told he's on his own. When you basically hear from the Police to "suck it up Buttercup" you know you are on thin ice.

I’m certain most of you are sick and tired about hearing the plight of the citizens in Minneapolis, but when I saw this post, I wanted to comment on it. A business owner sent an email to the commander of the city’s 3rd Precinct, claiming his employees are too frightened to come to work. The business owner – Craig Paulson – received this reply.

The owner of Pedego Electric Bikes sent an email to the local Police Chief saying that his employees are too frightened to come to work now. The answer he received was none too reassuring.

“As far as a long-term plan I don’t have one. I have lost 30% of my street officers since the end of May. Budget cuts from COVID-19 and an additional 1.5 million from the council in August we have let go 17 CSO’s and canceled a recruit class of 29. A potential Cadet class slated for January of 2021 was also eliminated. It takes about a year to get a police Officer onto the streets with hiring, backgrounds and field training so reinforcements aren’t coming anytime soon. We are doing everything we can with what we have. I hate to see great businesses like yours and the rest of your corridor being victimized and feeling unsafe. Please let me know if you have any more questions.”

Sorry, I don't care about these people any more.

The one thing I noticed is that she gave up trying to tear down the Trump sign, yes, because she was having trouble, totally out of breath, but she got busted and the woman taping her threatened to hand it into the police. I think that is what got her to leave. She kept her back to her after that, but it was too late, she caught her face (and bleached hair) in the video.

Well, one of the Defund the Police leaders let the cat out of the bag - when asked what you should do if someone breaks into your house she said, essentially, "too bad for you".

And keep in mind, there are still enough police to arrest you when you shoot/defend yourself in that scenario.

So the real answer is move out of any jurisdiction like Minneapolis to somewhere sane.

I've thought of putting up a sign but figured, what's the point? My state isn't in play, so it's not really going to make a difference. All I am doing is setting myself up for some nutjob to key my car or even worse.

So no signs for me. And it sucks that we live in this environment.

1. It wasn't a no knock warrant. They DID announce, knock...and Identified themselves as PD.

2. Taylor, along with her boyfriend (did you know she HAD a boyfriend living there) *were* suspects in the drug ring.

3. An officer was shot in the raid. Shot after Taylors boyfriend started shooting at police that had identified themselves as PD. I had no idea until yesterday an Officer had been shot in the raid.

4. She, tho unarmed, was shot and killed in the ensuing gun play between the cops and the boyfriend.

58 I don't put anything political on anything I own. I don't even put gun stuff on my car. I like to keep a low profile.

When you carry a gun, you try to avoid trouble.

I DO own a Trump hat, bought it at Trump Tower in Chicago. However, my wife hates Trump, so I can't even wear it around her.

I am often tempted, sorely tempted, to get some MAGA gear and respond....firmly to aggression. Sorely tempted. But I have a wife to tend to and jail time, because of course I'd be the one in jail, doesn't help her at all.

But this is how the Left wins: they can use intimidation and violence with impunity. Worse, they use the threat of us to change OUR behavior.

Until folks who are willing to do a stretch, or risk a wooden box, start killing these Leftist assholes in large numbers, we will continue to be the ones living in fear of our neighbors.

Instead of the other way around.

60 Regarding politics, I work in a deep blue industry with a strong anti_trump bent. I keep my mouth shut about current politics but can tell political stories skewering both sides if pushed plus have a background in politics from my home state.

The few times that I have let off truth bombs to individuals unlikely to have a future effect on my employment is somewhat amusing.

I do not idolize politicians--to me--they are the hired help. Just like everyone else, some are good, some are bad, and a few are actually statesmen. Trump is actually a statesman posing as a celebrity.

I never liked bumper stickers. But it's true, it was easy to put out signs or show support in clothing or whatever. It used to be like a fun sport, your team against theirs.

No more. Now it's a blood sport. Not worth it.

They are doing this to hide the support from others. They do not want the majority of Americans knowing just what the left is doing and how much support there is for our President, the military, the police and all first responders. They do not want people to know that the majority are still proud and love our country.

They want everyone to be miserable and feel like the failures that they are in order to seize power.

That is why they do not want Free Speech or the 2nd Amendment. Stifle us. Unarm us. Peasants.

67 I began following politics early as well.

Hell, I stuffed envelopes for Bill Saxbe's campaign in 1968.

That was...seventh grade I think.

I was always captivated by the presidential campaigns as told by Theodore H White.

But once Watergate took place, I realized that it was a bloodsport. And it always amazed me that the Republican party didn't understand that, at least in Ohio.

The Taft's and Bolton's would never "fight", too unseemly, much like the Bush's.

Though with the Bush clan, and the post 9/11 Republican Party, I think they promoted the Uniparty more than the party faithful, therefore to he position of acquiescence.

75 There are a lot of Trump signs in our MN suburbia - but I'd say more than half are either on the porch/nearer the house than out in the yard. Oh and there's a semi painted Trump 2020 on the way to the high school. Used to be vandalized daily but they gave up. Have seen a handful of Biden/Harris signs.

Outstate up north a couple weeks back was solid Trump and anti-Walz signs.

Now... well let's just say we're not shy about where we stand. I will be putting a TRUMP sign at the end of my driveway but I generally don't have stickers on my vehicles of any kind.

Speaking of TRUMP signage, there's more of it this election than last. I've yet to see a Biden/Harris or Harris/Biden sign anywhere. A couple of pickups that drive down our road daily have large TRUMP flags flying in their truck beds.

I am not famous and don't often interact with strangers. I am a known quantity to my friends and relatives. The only change I have made is that, with two exceptions - my immediate family (who are largely aligned) and my best friend (with whom I disagree about a lot, but we share core values) - I don't talk politics anymore. When I have friends who bring it up for the purposes of denouncing my positions, I don't take the bait unless one of them asks me a direct question. There is no point arguing with them without an audience (they will never change their minds), and I rarely have an audience. When they ask a direct question, though, I do respond and do so politely. I am -1 friend so far this year over it.

But I also live in a blue area. I have never been a bumper sticker or lawn sign guy, and it is downright perilous to become one at the moment. I have no plans to change my habits in that regard.

They are in a mixed, blue-leaning part of a red state. Trump and Biden signs are pretty common. But it is the only place I have seen like that. Here where I live on the Front Range (CO), it is all Left signage, even though I am in a somewhat conservative borough.

129 Being a Catholic, gun owning, conservative who lives in Greenwich Village I'd have to say, no. I haven't changed my political expression much at all. Our apartment has always been a kind of "Ft. Apache" for us. We are surrounded on all sides by people who despise us without reason, and we are only able to function in this environment by keeping our views to ourselves. No need to attract the crazies.

With that said, I will never ever lie about my views, and I'm big enough and tough enough to always live by this rule. Though honestly, it doesn't come up often as conflict.

But one recent change I've seen is that since the riots, people I deal with from the neighborhood who I know 'slightly' - my clerk at the wine store or the checkout at the supermarket, maybe someone who lives nearby who owns the same dog breed we do and we see from time to time, have been approaching me and announcing their change to a more conservative outlook. I'm guessing my 'conservatism' is outwardly visible to them in some way - enough to make them feel comfortable. Maybe it's my obvious lack of liberal self hatred.

And let me tell you, there are a ton of them. No one will defend De Blasio anymore. And a great many see Trump as unpalatable, but a far cry better than having their homes burned to the ground by Biden supporters.

I think there is a wellspring of support for Trump here, far more than will EVER be revealed by the polls. It might not be enough to matter, but I'm highly confident he does better in NYC and NY state than anyone is willing to say out loud.

My sense is he tends to look pretty closely at people and he takes the Judge thing seriously. Whoever he decides to pick - I'm supporting. I ran to be elected an uncommitted R delegate in my town in 1972. I was 18 at the time. I won - it was a write-in campaign - as there were no competitors.

I went into the background after that as my interest in participatory politics had waned. I really did not become active again until the Tea Party came on scene in 2009. My sister persuaded me to take part in the DC marches in 2009 and 2010. I contributed financially to campaigns in 2010 and 2012. I made calls for a losing R House candidate in Delaware in 2010. I was a poll watcher for the feckless Mittens, who left us hanging out to dry in 2012.

Of those to whom I contributed, damn few are still around. Kristi Noem (House) and Marco Rubio (Senate) are two that come to mind and I have no use now for Marco "Dondi" Rubio.

Now I kvetch here. Trump is our slender reed. Heads need to begin rolling among those entrenched for us to begin to truly bring back government of the people.

I've lived in Portland and am a political veteran through the Bush-Gore 2000 Wars, The Bush-Kerry Conflict, The Obama-Palin Ambush, the Obama-Romney Expedition, and the Trump-Clinton Nuclear conflict.

I've actually had to not show any support for Trump visually, or verbally. This is to protect property, job and life. I've never seen it this bad. I had the wipers tore off the car in 2000. Paint on the car keyed up and egged in 2004. I had a lady at a stoplight rip off my John Kerry Flip Flops I had hanging from the back of the truck in 2004. I had a cinder block thrown through back window of the wagon in 2008 where the McCain-Palin sticker was. I had both broken window car keyed, and wipers tore off in 2012. Spit and shoe polish all over the car in 2016.

This year? I'm afraid they'd burn my house down or my cars burned if a Trump sign were to go up. It's that bad.

My lefty writing colleague thinks Trump never graduated from college, is a huckster and a moron, and speaks on a fourth-grade level. Of course, as I keep handling his emails about this, and about Obama's gaffes and failures, with actual facts, he has begun to devolve into curses and name-calling. I thought he was better than that.

Barnes and @shipwreckedcrew have been arguing this out on twitter for the last couple days.

An appeal did reach her court and all 3 judges voted against the plaintiff not just ACB. SWC says the reason was because of poor lawyering, the lawyers argued the wrong issues, and doesn't really mean she was in favor of the lockdowns.

It's not the job of the appeals court to find a reason to overturn a ruling of a lower court, that's the job of the lawyers. The judges job, not judge Sullivan's apparently, is to judge the case in front of them not the one they want to judge.

239 While we have a small business owner in Minneapolis being told he's on his own. When you basically hear from the Police to "suck it up Buttercup" you know you are on thin ice.

It's like Detroit in 1968 after the riots, when the cops were openly telling people to move out of Detroit, because the cops were incapable of protecting them.

This is another big shift recently - blue cities will be increasingly unlivable, because the voters of those cities intend to make those cities unlivable.

I lived in Portland for twenty years. Nice place. Yeah, the taxes were a bit high, and the politicians were a bit loony, but when my house was robbed while I was overseas, the police bureau sent over a couple of cops to investigate, and followed up with an evidence tech to dust for fingerprints. I don't think they ever arrested anyone for it, but you got the sense they were trying.

Portland doesn't send cops to investigate residential burglaries anymore - you are directed to an online form to get a police report to submit to your insurance company. In some cases, people in Portland are now waiting hours for the cops to respond to violent crimes - the cops were already understaffed, and a big chunk of the police are on riot duty.

Criminals know that Portland has largely stopped investigating property crimes, of course.

It's only going to get worse. Portland voters overwhelmingly elected a Soros-backed DA who explicitly said that enforcing the laws against "non-violent" crimes was not a priority, and releases almost everyone charged with felony riot, so the riots will go on indefinitely.

There is a good chance that after November, a majority of the Portland city council will be comprised of absolute cop-haters.

This is what the voters of Portland, Seattle, New York, etc. want. If you don't want that, you need to leave.

Morning bike nazis are lucky they don't allow the rest of us to mount 50 cals on our hoods.

They try to stare you down if you are within 5 feet of the bike lane, yet they'll meander out into the car lane whenever they feel like it. They go through red lights, as if traffic signals mean nothing to them, including in front of you when you want to make a right turn, and they're going straight.

And keep your smelly sweaty bike stank out of the office, Janet. Not to mention your $140 Walmart bike you insist on parking in the hallways, if it's raining outside.

261 It's not the job of the appeals court to find a reason to overturn a ruling of a lower court, that's the job of the lawyers. The judges job, not judge Sullivan's apparently, is to judge the case in front of them not the one they want to judge.

You can check out @shipwreckedcrew's twitter to see the back and forth.
Posted by: JackStraw at September 23, 2020 11:31 AM (ZLI7S)

I'll be equally happy with either Barrett or Lagoa. I think the dynamics of a 6-3 conservative majority on the Court will change legal rulings dramatically across the board.

and to recap something we spoke of yesterday - the reason it will be 6-3 is that the Court has been 4-4-1 for at least 30 years, with first Kennedy and then Roberts playing the 1 role. This has led to incredible behind the scenes politicking on every ruling. BUT there is no advantage to a 5-3-1 split, and Roberts can only continue to influence decisions if he stays with the Majority.

so, the Left is correct to be freaking out, but this has been coming for a long time. The Court will be moving from 4-4-1 to 6-3, as soon as the new justice is confirmed.

How the holy hell am I supposed to get rid of those bastards, cut my tree down or top it?

323 History certainly seems to rhyme as it were. People of this era wonder aloud how could so many Germans of wealth and power support the Nazis..

I must now point to a political party in Tsarist Russia. The Kadets actually raised money for the terrorists. They praised the murderous thugs calling them martyrs. And when Lenin came to power, the Cheka repaid their support with imprisonment and execution.

actually there are more people here that like Trump than I ever imagined

There was a rally in front of the US Embassy in Ottawa and the state propaganda arm, the CBC covered it as some other type of rally, never admitting it was a pro-Trump rally. The people were furious.

The CBC - state run news like PBS and NPR lied completely about the rally. Lied.

Just serve the fucking warrant at 12:40 pm and a lot of problems are eliminated.

Years ago a friend of mine (Tacoma cop) was on a call where they found a local bad guy. Several outstanding warrants...you know the drill. A real bad guy.
He's in this house.
So SWAT gets called. Lots of cars, trucks, flashing lights, the works. Its about 9 PM.
So my friend looks around and thinks this is BS. As he was first on the scene, it's kind of his thing.
So he just walks up to the door and knocks.
The bad guy answers.
Bad guy is about 6'4" and 250. My friend is about 5'9" and maybe a buck fifty.
Bad guy looks my friend over and just smiles. "You think you can take me in?"
My friend just smiles and says "Look. You can come with me and we'll go over to my car and talk about this, or I can shoot you. Or all these guys behind me will. What's it gonna be?
Bad guy looks at my friend, laughs, shakes his hand and introduces himself and come out.

SWAT commander was pissed. He was busting a gut to go crashing in.

336 I feel you, driving home from South Texas over the weekend and stopped for fuel on the western edge of Fort Worth. The station is one I frequent several times a year, only thing difference is that it was 2am and in addition to diesel - I needed def. If you drive a newer diesel, you know what will happen if you run out of def.
Should have mostly been a routine stop, except my card declined for no discernable reason. No problem, I have a back up card for another account.... and it declined.
So there I sat.... 2am in downtown Fort Worth - a place I've been to many times and have always considered relatively safe digging thru my bag for cash to pay for def.
Then a van load of young adults pulls in two pumps over and the passengers hop out. They were young, scruffy looking and other than the 2 wearing BLM t-shirts, they shouldn't have drawn my attention.
That's when I did things completely out of character for me..... I locked my door, checked my carry gun and moved it into easy reach and discreetly photographed the van trying to include the License Plate. Texted my husband to let him know exactly where I was and did my best to vanish into the shadows.
They eventually loaded up and left and I went inside to pay for the def and got back on the road as quickly as possible. And I was furious that these asshats have caused me be suspicious of groups of young people in a State and City I have never been concerned about in my whole life.

360 and to recap something we spoke of yesterday - the reason it will be 6-3 is that the Court has been 4-4-1 for at least 30 years, with first Kennedy and then Roberts playing the 1 role. This has led to incredible behind the scenes politicking on every ruling. BUT there is no advantage to a 5-3-1 split, and Roberts can only continue to influence decisions if he stays with the Majority.

Yep. Roberts will start to become more conservative. Or at least his voting record will.
Posted by: JackStraw at September 23, 2020 11:44 AM (ZLI7S)

It also provides him cover. Roberts doesn't EVER want to be the spotlight swing vote, seen as giving Trump a victory. So another conservative will allow him to vote his true feeling.

At least in theory.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite movies:

Mr Blanding's Dream House

Muriel Blandings : I want it to be a soft green, not as blue-green as a robin's egg, but not as yellow-green as daffodil buds. Now, the only sample I could get is a little too yellow, but don't let whoever does it go to the other extreme and get it too blue. It should just be a sort of grayish-yellow-green.
Now, the dining room. I'd like yellow. Not just yellow; a very gay yellow. Something bright and sunshine-y. I tell you, Mr. PeDelford, if you'll send one of your men to the grocer for a pound of their best butter, and match that exactly, you can't go wrong!
Now, this is the paper we're going to use in the hall. It's flowered, but I don't want the ceiling to match any of the colors of the flowers. There's some little dots in the background, and it's these dots I want you to match. Not the little greenish dot near the hollyhock leaf, but the little bluish dot between the rosebud and the delphinium blossom. Is that clear?
Now the kitchen is to be white. Not a cold, antiseptic hospital white. A little warmer, but still, not to suggest any other color but white.
Now for the powder room - in here - I want you to match this thread, and don't lose it. It's the only spool I have and I had an awful time finding it! As you can see, it's practically an apple red. Somewhere between a healthy winesap and an unripened Jonathan. Oh, excuse me...

Mr. PeDelford : You got that Charlie?

Charlie, Painter : Red, green, blue, yellow, white.

Mr. PeDelford : Check.

Criminals, unless they're high on drugs, have fairly normal thought processes. If presented with bad odds they're likely to give in. Good odds they'll take and equal odds they might chance. They're on average a bit dumber and have shorter time horizons so they don't necessarily factor in that getting away in one case might just mean more in the future. But if they didn't act in fairly predictable manners gangs wouldn't be able to function.

In certain situations humans will reflexively fight back. Not engaging in those unnecessarily is smart policing and minimizes risk.

410 WyattEarp,
I have a bit of professional curiosity on serving warrants.

Just wondering why you do not secure the suspects out and about with arrest warrants and the same probable cause statements of facts for an arrest warrant would also serve to allow a search warrant of the premises without the risk of a no knock warrant. I am guessing that the issue is the risk to public safety but I could be wrong.

Reason why I am asking, is David Koresh, for example, could have been secured with little fanfare outside of his compound with an arrest warrant which would have probably then reduced the risk of conflict when a subsequent search warrant was served at the compound.

Posted by: exdem13 at September 23, 2020 11:39 AM (W+kMI)

Assumptions about schedule aside, people are less jumpy in the daytime and visibility is much better. Cops also sometimes get the wrong house. Night raids are more appropriate for Bin Laden, not an attempt at a peaceful arrest.
====
Sure, it's good that way. But every big-city PD treats drug raids like they're out to get Bin Laden. It gets them arrests and the evidence the DA wants. If the officers had showed up at noon, walked to the front door, and announced themselves the dirtbag boyfriend would be out the window and Ms. Taylor would've flushed the stuff. (Insert lengthy discussion of the War on Drugs and its abrasions of citizen rights here.) Still, if it wasn't 2020, this arrest resulting in a fatality would've never made national news. The Leftards don't know or care about the facts of the case, smash, burn, and assault, because damaging the USA and opposing Trump is more important.

My assumption is, when you get runners, the ones who have warrants and don't want to be taken in, the ones who sometimes suicide by cop, these are the guys who have been incarcerated, and were someone's bitch.

The big guys like this, they don't WANT to get taken in, but they know it's not worth it to make a fuss here and now.

447 Tom Servo and SH,
My suspicion is that part of what you are seeing in the Biden campaign is an internal civil war over control over the Dem party apparatus. The oldsters are facing the Revolutionaries and while they may express the same rhetoric--the oldsters do lip service to it in order to enrich themselves--the youngsters in the Dem party right now are true believers that the Revolution has come. They want power and want it now.

You might even see some of the oldster Dems deliberately tank their nominee in order to keep power in the party. Examples in the past include McGovern and on the right, Goldwater.

call where they found a local bad guy. Several outstanding

You can come with me and we'll
go over to my car and talk about this, or I can shoot you. Or all these
guys behind me will. What's it gonna be?

Bad guy looks at my friend, laughs, shakes his hand and introduces himself and come out.

SWAT commander was pissed. He was busting a gut to go crashing in.

My assumption is, when you get runners, the ones who have warrants
and don't want to be taken in, the ones who sometimes suicide by cop,
these are the guys who have been incarcerated, and were someone's bitch.

The big guys like this, they don't WANT to get taken in, but they know it's not worth it to make a fuss here and now.

I don't mean to pick on this particular comment but rather on its representative sentiment. As long as conservatives keep thinking like this, they will lose in the long run. Any group that is too ashamed or frightened to show itself cannot survive for long, nor can it transfer its beliefs to the next generation as well as a group that proudly touts its beliefs and controls most of the levers of the culture. The next generation is going to be... interesting.

Ask anyone from an HOA if they will change the rules to take away the power to foreclose on somebody's house. You will quickly find out if the "good of the homeowners" is their motivation. Does that mean all HOAs are evil, no, but it does mean the potential for somebody evil to do their worst, is built into the very structure of the HOA.

It's always very difficult to predict what the Saudi's will do, because the Royals always have "wheels within wheels" scheming going on - but I do believe they are on board. An Israeli paper recently has published reports saying that Crown Prince Salman is very much in favor of Saudi signing on, but that is father, King Salman, is still opposed and thinks it has gone too far.

Now, this may be possible, it cannot be disproved. But it also looks a whole lot to me like the two of them (King and Crown Prince) are running a Good Cop, Bad Cop routine just to get some extra concessions for themselves from everyone else involved. That would fit their M.O. perfectly, they love finding ways to be on both sides of every question.
