The "Historic" Abraham Accords Are Exciting, But They Are Not Everything

As much as I want to believe that this is the beginning of the end of the Arab world's vituperative mania and hatred of Israel, The Abraham Accords are more of a shift of geopolitical connections and enemies, rather than a meaningful decrease in the global threats against Israel.

That does not diminish the significance of President Trump's astounding achievement. Hatred of Israel and demonization of Jews has been one of the cornerstones of Arab and Muslim foreign and domestic policies for generations, and the cold peace with Jordan and Egypt had more to do with immediate security needs and the realization that Israel's military and economic might was permanent.

But countries that do not border Israel and have little to do with the intractable problem of the Palestinian Arabs were safe in their Israel HateTM. They could trot out "Our poor downtrodden Palestinian cousins" whenever a bit of distraction from their political or economic failures was needed. Bahrain and The United Arab Emirates had very little concern that they would wake up one morning to see Israeli tanks in their streets, so their motivation to sign a treaty normalizing relations is based on other things.

And the question is: What are those things? Certainly Saudi Arabia's desire to have Israel part of its own strategy to confront, or at least blunt the Iranian threat is high on the list. KSA is pulling some of these strings, and Bahrain and UAE would not have done this without the approval of the Saudis. And oil prices certainly play a role; these countries can no longer rely on oceans of hard currency to prop up their welfare states. The entrepreneurial spirit of American frackers plus the full-throated support of President Trump for a rational domestic energy policy made sure of that.

But the most important part of the agreements is who wasn't at the signing, but will be at the next one. This is a stabilizing trend in the Middle East, and while the mandarins in the beltway may scoff at its supposed lack of importance, the possibility of half of the Arab world moving from a state of war with Israel to a state of peace is an amazing and unexpected byproduct of the president's ability to make deals.

He didn't solve the "Palestinian" problem, but he set the world on a course that may make the Palestinians simply irrelevant if they don't make peace with Israel...and they will never do that!

I somewhat disagree. Political normalization makes it substantially more likely they will be treated as other countries in the region are should they ever be conquered(which tends to happen to nearly every country at some point). Meaning that they'd likely be ruled through some sort of puppet government and pop right back out whenever the empire in question collapses, as opposed to being sent on another long exile.

27 I understand what you're saying; I don't think that any piece of paper in the world can solve 1,000 years (or is it 2,000 years?) of naked anti-semitism (or just call it jew-hatred) in the world. Getting governments who have been paying for the attacks to stop doing that is about the best one could hope for.

Although having said that, I think we could demonstrate that Jew-hatred in the Arab World over the last 50 years has been much, much worse than it was say 150 years ago, and a big part of that is because so much effort has been put into pushing it by those doing it for their own ends. In one light, the Palestinians caused this, but it's also fair to say that they have been the biggest dupes and stooges in history. All of their suffering has been prolonged and deepened just to benefit other people's power plays.

Posted by: Tom Servo at September 17, 2020 04:37 PM (Kpl3J)

28 Trump wrote off the Palestinians early in his presidency, when he had set up a nice deal with Israel with them and then they spurned it after presumably having told him they would accept in private. Since then, the US has cared nothing about the Palestinians as an actor in the Mideast, and even the press seems to be willing to shelve them.

68 Unfortunately, there are only two ways of solving "The Palestinian Problem."

The first, extermination, is a non-starter, of course.

The second, having Jordan and Egypt finally muscle up and reclaim the "palestinians" as Jordanian and Egyptian citizens (which is what these people were in 1948 and 1967 before Israel kicked Arab ass in the two wars of those years.

Whomever was wise enough to have the Israelis and Arabs look all the way to Abraham to recognize their shared humanity to do the current deal, might also be smart enough to say:

"Look, the entire world knows what's been going on here for the last 75 years: Egyptian citizens living in the Egyptian Gaza and Jordanian citizens living in Judea and Samaria fell under Israeli rule because Egypt and Jordan lost several wars with Israel."

"Here is a $32Bn project to irrigate the deserts of Jordan and Egypt using Israeli technology, which will allow the hiring of any "palestinian" who is officially reinstated as a citizen of Jordan or Egypt. The project will commence once 3 million "palestinians" have had their Egyptian or Jordanian citizenship reinstated, and have been offered dwelling space within Jordan or Egypt as appropriate."

"Please choose wisely."

"Oops, almost forgot. You have to get rid of Hamas and Hezbullah and have free elections that all "palestinians" participate in for those areas."

Sure, the plan has problems, but it's got to be better than a 4th generation of inbred retarded goat-fucking simps living in "refugee camps" and doing nothing to improve their lot in life.

The economic cooperation and open military cooperation that will follow, to counter Iran's dreams of regional hegemony will be what has the greatest chance of bringing about a permanent change.

When their soldiers know that Israel had their backs, and when their merchants have made fortunes in Israeli markets, those selling antisemitism will find few buyers.

So. Much. Sadness, that kids are just not learning this stuff anymore. I read The Diary of Anne Frank in elementary school! Why is he a teen and doesn't know who she is?

I got him her diary and Number the Stars to read over the summer, but I don't think he touched them, because it was too obvious I was trying to make him learn over the summer.

Any good ways to teach the holocaust to a teen without bashing him over the head with it? Will try my copy of Maus next, he loves comics and manga. I read that as a preteen so he should be fine.

174 As much as I want to believe that this is the beginning of the end of the Arab world's vituperative mania and hatred of Israel, The Abraham Accords are more of a shift of geopolitical connections and enemies, rather than a meaningful decrease in the global threats against Israel.

No, nothing will end the Muslim world's hatred of Jews (and by extension, Israel and Israel's supporters) because it's a feature of the Koran. As the Koran cannot be changed (ever!), one cannot remain a Muslim and not espouse Jew-hatred. This is just more taqiyah, dissimulation towards the kaffir, to get what one wants. In this case, better trade deals. Which is fine, for now. But don't ever think they still don't want to wipe Israel and all Jews off the face of the earth, and wouldn't stab us in the back the first chance opportunity presents itself. Because you knew it was a snake when you picked it up...

179 Greenspan said we needed to got to war to keep the oil flowing (Bush 41) which keeps the economy booming. (supposedly he took that back, but oil was certainly always fundamental to ME tensions).

Saddam was our guy for awhile, then he wasn't. Shia versus Sunni was useful (Iran versus Iraq) ... but the Shia Persians are a minority, that have to be propped up, to keep that region in chaos? (Shah, then Khomeini) And some Muslims are "twelvers", some are seventh imam'ers, several offshoots. (like with Christianity, but with wars).

My newer insight/perception is that experts say, the Saudis are not supposed to be leading Islam (per the scrolls or something) ... they are the wrong group, but have usurped that position, mostly via their raw wealth. But the others (Sunni, Shia, and the other factions) all hate them for it.

Erdogan is trying to be the new leader of Islam sorta ... to form the caliphate (Obama's beloved Arab Spring, and murder of Ghadaffi), but also will not be accepted ... he is more secular, despite playing the Muslim Brotherhood game. (experts tell me). So Trump has clearly changed the game ... Obama/CIA? were backing Iran for some reason ... to keep conflict going, constant war for profit? And Erdogan tries to leverage his position ... now trying to claim oil around Greece ... stomping on Kurds.

A peaceful alliance makes sense for the main players .... CIA/DeepState don't seem to like that notion. Is the globalist NWO plan to keep sovereign nations at war, the same way they keep Americans at war with each other internally? idk, kinda makes sense. Grifters looking to profit while everyone else fights.

(my current ME understanding, always changing)

189 The Historic Abraham Accords Are Exciting, And This is Why They ARE Everything:

Anyone who has watched the Middle East closely has known that for the last 40 years, a grand war has been looming, one which had the potential to drag all of the Major World Powers into it - the US, China, Russia, the Europeans. This is because it would have been centered on control of the vast majority of the world's oil resources, and hence the worlds economy. We may forget this, but this was a *Lot* bigger than the Isreali question has been, although that of course was important. This could easily have been the flashpoint for WW3 - several prominent students of the region thought it would be.

What I refer to was the building grand war between the Sunni and the Shia, roughly being the Saudi-led bloc and the Iranian led block. Iran has been working for years to encircle the Saudi's by starting proxy wars in Yemen and taking over Lebanon, through Hezbollah. This is what most of the fighting in Syria was about, with ISIS being the big Joker in the deck.

And now, suddenly, that war we've feared for 40 years now isn't going to happen. The threat is over, Trump and Prince Salman and Bibi Netenyehu, all working together for their own purposes, have neutralized it. This actually does mean True Peace in the middle east, for the most part. Oh, Iran will still cause trouble, that's who they are, but they don't dare lash out anymore. When a nation attacks, they want to attack into chaos, into confusion. But now Iran is facing a new military alliance of the Gulf States, Saudi, Egypt, Israel, and the US, all ready to act in concert with each other and provide defense in depth. No way do they dare strike that - they've been put back in their box for at least a generation, if not two.

This is what Peace in our Time actually looks like. Not an empty promise, but the Real Thing.

I think that is one of the advantage of him being basically an outsider. He doesn't share the presuppositions and baggage of previous insider political types.

For 50 years its been assumed that nothing is possible in the middle east without the pallys being appeased or approving. Trump saw past that in a way that entrenched fossilized thinkers would not.

Will it work? I dunno. Probably not, human nature being what it is. I mean, Bush's audacious scheme in Iraq could have worked, but way too many people with way too much influence and money wanted it not to for a variety of reasons. All it takes is the next president being an Obama type who wants an Iranian Caliphate controlling the Middle East in some delusion of stability and ethnic justice, and it all gets torn down overnight.

Mohammed wanted to be accepted as a religious scholar, in the same way that the Jewish and Christian religious leaders of his area had influence.

He learned, a bit, their stories, and tried to imitate them. When what he produced was rejected as heresy by both Jews and Christians, he turned on them.

Hence in early places he says to go to "The Book" for answers to questions not in his recitations, but later says to kill us.

222 I believe there's still $50 BILLION in investments available to them if they'll just kick out Hamas/Hezbollah and accept peace with Israel.

Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis

Unfortunately, Hamas and Hezbollah have such a tight grip on that society that it will be suicide for anyone to attempt to kick them out.

Of course, suicide is also just about the only option for most people who are born into "palestine", so perhaps someone will eventually get together with some other brave folks and do what must be done.

223 I agree with most of this, CBD. Ultimately the Palestinian Problem is not going to be solved until the Palestinians stop being the aggressors.

This is a very good start though. It would have been very easy for the Arab League to ignore everything as a way to keep pressure on Israel. That they are coming to the table like this, individually sure but still coming, is a pretty significant breakthrough. Just like they did not have to worry about Palestinians, they also did not have much reason to care about Israel.

224 Sorry for harping on this PA Supreme Court decision but read a little more and I'm even more stunned then before.

You see the petitioner didn't even ask the Court for ballots with no post marks to be accepted. They just threw it in for free.

The decision:

"ballots mailed by voters via the United States Postal Service and postmarked by 8:00p.m. on Election Day , November 3, 2020, shall be counted if they are otherwise valid and received by the county boards of election on or before 5:00 p.m. on November 6, 2020; ballots received within this period that lack a postmark or other proof of mailing, or for which the postmark or other proof of mailing is illegible, will be presumed to have been mailed by Election Day unless a preponderance of the evidence demonstrates that it was mailed after Election Day"

Here's the request for relief:

In Count 2, Petitioner sought an injunction to "lift the deadline in the Election Code across the state to Allow any ballot postmarked by 8:00 p.m. on Election Night to be counted if it is received by the Boards" by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, which is
the deadline for ballots to be received under the Federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act ("UOCAVA")

Update: You've got to be kidding. The court's using the Military-Overseas ballot standard for their basis for no postmark for every PA voter.

225 The Koran its self is kind of schizophrenic about Jews.

That's because there are two Korans. The first one was written in Mecca, when Mohammed felt kindly towards the Jews. The second Koran was written in Medina after he got kicked out of his own home town and started forcibly converting people by conquest instead of proselytizing. As anything Mohammed wrote was incontrovertible, if he wrote about a subject more than once, the youngest (last) reference will always be the "true" one. However, it's very convenient to refer to the older writings when pulling the wool over the eyes of us stupid nonbelievers. Not that we need to be told the truth anyway, what with shortly being made dead and all.

228 Most of the really virulent Jew-hate comes from the later stuff, particularly the teachings of Wahhabi and mullahs who continually add to the Koran.

Just the Koran alone is a mess and contradictory but its less crazy and horrible than the crap that's been added on later.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 17, 2020 05:10 PM (KZzsI)

Agreed - and it's easy for us in the west to forget how top-down the Arab societies are, especially the Saudis. The King controls the Imams, and when the Order comes out to start speaking much more nicely about the Jews, that happens across the board. (it's already happening) The Arabs are people who need to be led, and who, for better and for worse, will for the most part do what they're told to do, and believe what they're told to believe.

Thinking for oneself is not a quality which is very highly regarded in the Arab world.

229 He learned, a bit, their stories, and tried to imitate them. When what he produced was rejected as heresy by both Jews and Christians, he turned on them.

He got really mad at Jews after they rejected him as the new Religious Leader and didn't turn Jerusalem over to him as the center of the earth and his faith. He literally expected them to join him, or if not then his rag tag crew of losers could conquer Jerusalem, one of the toughest fortresses in the world to crack. They didn't and he didn't.

He did not take that well. So he "conquered" a little crossroads nowhere that wasn't fortified and declared it the holy center of the world.

231 Just more of the Color Revolution....

The state Supreme Court, which has a 5-2 Democratic majority, granted the Democratic Party's request to order a three-day extension of Pennsylvania's Election Day deadline to count mailed-in ballots. And it ruled that the Green Party's candidate for president did not strictly follow procedures for getting on the ballot in November and cannot appear on it.

Ballots that are eligible to be counted must be postmarked by the time polls close and be received by county election boards at 5 p.m. on Nov. 6, three days after the Nov. 3 election. Republicans have opposed changing that deadline.

Most states make Election Day the deadline, but 18 states - about half of which backed President Donald Trump in the 2016 election - have a post-Election Day deadline.

Yeah the abrogation thing is... interesting, to say the least. You ignore contradictory passages from the past and take the latest, because perfect and infallible Muhammad changed his mind, or something.

Plus, there were many different copies of the Koran, because he kept changing his mind when he wrote and forgot what he'd said before, and there is considerable evidence the man was hearing voices in his head and crazy. I defy anyone to read the Old or New Testament, and read the Koran, and say they are similar in any way in terms of coherence.

There may be difficult concepts in the Bible; the Koran is just a landfill of words.

Note that Muslims do not go to "Koran studies" the way Christians do "bible studies". Because you cannot study the Koran. It cannot be understood.

They really focus on the idea that the words are perfect in and of themselves, and in the chanting of those words.

252 Will it work?
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 17, 2020 05:14 PM (KZzsI)

I disagree that it can be torn down that easily, and I think that's why so many on the left are spitting nails about it. Once the Gulf Arabs and the Saudi's and the Israeli's align, it is going to be very hard for the US to break them apart. Especially since the Saudis and the Israelis together have enough Air Power to stop the Iranians cold if they try anything, even without US help.

Also, I think the Bush plan's fatal flaw was that it assumed that the Arab world wanted Democracy just like us, and that they were sufficiently advanced to be able to handle it. They're not. Arab countries need autocratic rulers with enough power to keep each tribe from trying to kill every other tribe whenever they think they can get away with it. A democratic form of government will always fail there.

Obama tried that. Which is a major reason we got to this point in the first place. The Middle East, and specifically the Saudis, are not the ultra passive actors that woke society believes they are. Now, Trump has badly weakened Iran. You're right in that a Biden Administration would seek to lift those sanctions immediately, but the Arab states would clearly have a problem with that. 280 I agree with CBD that this is not the last step in normalizing the Middle East. But it is a very big step. Up to now only Egypt and Jordan have recognized Israel, and they have done only modest joint activities. Now, two countries that do not border Israel have recognized it, and several more are going to do so soon (Sudan, Oman, Morocco, are among them).

Noteworthy is that Saudi Arabia approves of what the UAE and Bahrain have done, for it is now allowing commercial airline flights over its territory from them to Israel (which has NEVER happened before).

Noteworthy also is that the Arab League refused to pass a resolution put forward by the Palestinians to reject the agreements of UAE and Bahrain with Israel.

This is really the big impact right now: the majority of the Arab states no longer support the Palestinian demands, and they are ready to join hands with Israel against their real enemy, Iran.

Indeed news articles have reported that even Iraq and Syria are fed up with having Iran's military occupying them.

I'm sure they already have a few USPS workers lined up to fix that little problem. They'll probably have drop boxes right in Philly Post Offices on the days after the election marked "Ballots".

289 The US Constitution in no uncertain terms states that the election is to
be held on x date without exceptions. Judges have over time more and
more taken a... nuanced view to this, and decided that meant "well more
or less within a few weeks of that time, as long as you count it all at
once." And now the counting doesn't even have to take place on the same
day.

We won't be voting our way out of this mess. That only leaves one box left.

293 Plus, there were many different copies of the Koran, because he kept changing his mind when he wrote and forgot what he'd said before, and there is considerable evidence the man was hearing voices in his head and crazy. The "one true" version we have now isn't the same as some of the older, preserved copies which they don't want anyone to see any longer.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 17, 2020 05:21 PM (KZzsI)

Mo never wrote a word. He was illiterate. The koran is basically reminiscences of his rants, jotted down by his cronies.

It's a disaster, but at least they cut it off at 3 days after the election.

California-Style Ballot Harvesting really only works when you can fuck around finding box after box of new ballots for weeks after an election.

We'll see. I'm not happy about this, but at least there is SOME limit to the jiggery-pokery.
Posted by: Sharkman at September 17, 2020 05:20 PM (BM2fS)

3 days was plenty for the commie leftists to steal the local Seattle city council election. Combined with ballot harvesting to know how many ballots they had to find in the trunk of Buicks, extra days give them plenty of time to rig the election.

298 no time limit for mail in ballots ... (or even faking postmarks, not that hard) ... gives Dems time to find all those that did not vote, then they can submit a (fake) mail-in ballot for them ... fake signature ... bada bing ... 35% that normally don't vote will show up late in the mail, 99% voting Dem.

That narrative already seems set, not sure they could pull it off, but it would not be their high moral character that would stop them.

304 33 And what this does is also put other Muslim majority countries like Malaysia, Indonesia etc who do not have any diplomatic relationship with Israel in a quandary. If the big boys in the ME are having diplomatic and economic relationships with Israel - what are they holding out for?
Posted by: IC at September 17, 2020 04:38 PM (a0IVu)

Malaysia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh will soon sign the same agreement the USE did - about half the workers in the USE come from those countries, and the UAE is likely telling them sign or the workers go home.

Sudan will also sign - the UAE and Saudi Arabia own about half the farmland in the country. They will do what they are told.

Morocco, Oman, and Tunisia will sign just to get it over with.

So at least seven more countries will sign, probably more like 8-9.

305 Israel - money, technology, investment, business, trade, defense, science.

Palestinians - an empty hand asking for cash.

Who would you rather strike a deal with? What good do the Palestinians do for anyone? can they make or invent anything? help defend against Iran and Turkey? Provide good intelligence assets?

Or do they just say gimmie gimmie gimmie?

the Palestinians have been a drain on Mideast, in fact the whole world's, resource for decades. Basically just lighting big piles of money on fire. The Arabs look around, and have decided it ain't worth it.

Posted by: Inspector Kemp at September 17, 2020 06:06 PM (I262G)

306 "But now Iran is facing a new military alliance of the Gulf States, Saudi, Egypt, Israel, and the US, all ready to act in concert with each other and provide defense in depth."

Think about that. The Saudis and UAE have money, intelligence, but few people and little military experience. Egypt has no money, but lots of soldiers and some military experience. And Israel has money, nukes, military experience, but a small ground force. Separate they can all get beat in one way or another. But together - Iran has zero chance of a win. They have all the bases covered and nicely compensate for each's weak points.

Iran has people and a military, but no money. Iraq has not much. Ditto the Palestinians. Syria and Yemen are busted beyond repair. The Iranian alliance is more like a bunch of dependents.

Israel has been running circles around Iran in Syria for years now. They can fly right into Tehran any time they want. They can teach UAE and the Saudis to do the same. They also have missile defense, which they may share. Unless Iran plans on dropping a nuke off a donkey cart, they don't have a chance.

307 Making the Palestinians irrelevant does solve the problem. If the next five Arab states join as is the indication, including Saudi Arabia, the Palestinians will be relegated to bitching to Iran China and Russia in the main and they can't do jack other than start of war in the Palestinians aren't worth it to them

Posted by: oddnot at September 17, 2020 08:51 PM (BhZu6)

308 The so-called Palestinians already are irrelevant, and have been from the word go. The Palestinian people have only ever been a purely political construct.

"The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism.
"For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa. While as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan."

(PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein, March 1977, in and interview with the Dutch newspaper Trouw.)
