Americans Losing Trust in Their Scientific Institutions, Poll Finds

Oh really?

I wonder what might account for that?

Could it be that these institutions are dominated by leftwingers and leftwingers have gone absolutely bugfuck insane for four years straight? And have converted every institution they control into a Democrat/Socialist front group?

For example:

They believe that the environment or whatever is more important than the abolition of slavery? Why does Scientific American hate blacks?

Now that I think about it, they've been around for 175 years I bet there are some back issues that say some pretty interesting things about "The Negro Races."

18 Unfortunately the scientific community has bifurcated itself.

There's now:

- the True Scientist, who believe in: truth, facts, data, Scientific method,

- the 'Chicken Little' Scientist, who believe in crap models, apocoliptic proclamations and panic porn.

Out of the 2 groups, the 'Chicken little' ones are now sadly more prevalent.

SciAmer has been political at least since the 1960s when they were pushing strategic arms control.

They stopped being interesting when they dropped their Amateur Scientist column, that showed how to build DIY x-ray machines and particle accelerators.

The destruction of 'science' as I think of it began to decline with the establishment of the Union of Concerned Scientists, which IIRC was established to be an anti-nuclear group.

Once they did their nonsense, as well as that execrable 'Doomsday Clock', the decline was well and truly in effect.

The Scientific American statement just puts a period on that sentence.

49 The climate farce did it for a lot of numerate people.

The pandemic farce just sealed the deal.

Note that I did not say hoax or fraud. There is some truth intermeshed into all these farces -- but so what, effective lies are usually a corruption built on top of some things that are true.

There has to be some truth in it. If their lie started out with "the air is made of chocolate pudding," it would be a lot harder to sell.

"If you're talking about getting back to a degree of normality which resembles where we were prior to COVID, it's going to be well into 2021, maybe even towards the end of 2021," said the director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases on Friday.

A safe and effective vaccine produced this quickly would be a stunning scientific accomplishment that could save thousands of lives. But Fauci warned that widespread distribution and getting "the majority, or more, of the population vaccinated and protected" won't happen until perhaps the end 2021, and therefore means we cannot be free from oppressive lockdown measures until at least that point.

194 Another week, another "Muh Institutional Trust" article.

I actually do agree that the shattering of institutional trust is a serious problem. Lots of bad potential when you can't trust anyone in a position of authority. Shit gets weird when that happens. Planning is difficult. Lots of downside.

But I don't bemoan it and I don't pretend to not understand it. Here's a pro tip for the institutions. It's easy to say but difficult to practice: Quit fucking lying about everything. Try being honest even if you don't like it.

Recommended reading for the state of the scientific community in this era...

The Trouble with Physics by Lee Smolin

Lost in Math by Sabine Hossenfelder

The Devil's Delusion and The Deniable Darwin by David Berlinski

Signature in the Cell and Darwin's Doubt by Stephen Meyer

Farewell to Reality by Jim Baggot

I'm rather certain that Hossenfelder and Baggot would object, Baggot rather virulently, to being included in a reading list featuring names from the Discovery Institute, but these books, taken together, offer an interesting panorama of the state of mind that "reputable" scientists operate in nowadays; and indeed, for a good long while before now, too.

257 Even the sexy dance troupe of 11-year-old boys twerking in my quarantine beard to audition for roles in the gender-swapped sequel to "Cuties" being jointly produced by the Bulwark and the Dispatch can see that the attack on science by Donald Trump evidenced for example in the hundreds of thousands of Americans killed by his ignorant mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic has spread among many of his cultish followers, accounting for the results of this latest poll.

When one side rejects science itself then we lack even a framework in which we can have a meaningful exchange of views. That is why my advice to Joe Biden is to refuse to debate the science denier Trump.

By doing so, Biden would be taking the bravest stand for science since Galileo. Yes, fascist anti-science Trumpists would likely respond with violence, as we have seen in Kenosha and so many other places around the country. 273 Much like the old socialist axiom, that which is not necessary is illegal, that which is necessary is mandatory.

Either an institution exists and aids socialists to gain and/or maintain power. Or it needs to be destroyed. Socialists will target any and all institutions for one of those fates, destruction or coopting into the socialist totalitarianism.

There is no reality beyond the state, not art, not science, not history, nothing. It ei5er becomes part of the the state or it gets destroyed.

313 Speaking of science, one traditional way to test out a theory is to run it through multiple experiments and see what happens.

So, for example, if various US states lock down hard, others somewhat, and a few not at all you can compare over time the amount of money spent and what effect it has had on deaths from the virus.

And we have that - the harder a state locked down the more deaths it got, the more jobs it lost, and the more money it spent.

320 Poseurs, sneering braggarts and unconscionable snobs.

The scientific community like to preen that they are rational, empirical, 'just the facts, ma'am', straight shooters who will brook no fluff or emotional nonsense and look down their noses at the ignorant Hoi polloi in a way that would make a French aristocrat blush
. But look how they they scream, wail, curse, throw the toys out of their pram and generally go full toddler rage if any of their number steps away from their orthodoxy, or 'settled science' if you will.

That's not to say that anyone who questions them is always right, far from it.
But their first recourse in rebuffing counter arguments is always abuse, name-calling and whisper campaigns rather than explaining why their adversary is wrong with facts and ...oh that other thing they say they love but tend not to bother with much nowadays...oh yes...science, that's the one.

Of course on the rare occasions they don't browbeat dissenters to silence and the dissenters are proved correct - and it looks like proponents of the 'Younger Dryas impact theory' are currently winning their argument as a recent example - then of course it's all backsliding and backslapping and "Of course I knew you were right all along, dear boy". Especially when lucrative scientific prizes and tenures hove into view.

And I haven't even mentioned their unfortunate and usually disastrous forays into political matters.

The religiosity of the true believers is also quite off-putting. If your theory is so iron-clad, the debate NEVER ends, and oh by the way, it won't require marketing either (why did "global warming : become "climate change"? Climate ALWAYS changes; if it didn't, why are average temps update every ten years, covering periods going back 30 years?)

336 I feel so old.

I remember a time when we used to be able to laugh at the Soviet Union for Lysenkoism.

Now it's more like "Lysenkoism? Hold my beer!"

Sadly, I realize it wasn't all that great, even way back. As others have observed, we had the "Nuclear Winter" concept. Basically, it was on the same scientific level as "climate change".

It's worth noting that Ayn Rand had this figured out WAY back, in the 1940s. In Atlas Shrugged, the scientific establishment provides an obstacle for a new invention ("Reardon metal"), without any actual scientific justification.

There is *NO* asymptomatic spread.

Once you understand that you understand why people are doing the things they are doing from Fauci to Pelosi.

So taking public transit when the random person next to you might cough on you? Bad idea.

Huddling with people you know, or at least have taken the temperature of? Who cares.

Yeah, I just meant if they were trying to follow the Left's scaremongering rules.

The fact is, no one at a football game should need to wear a mask at all whether they are on the sidelines alone or within 6' of someone giving and interview. Because, if I understand it correctly, everyone allowed into the stadium was tested and tested negative. So, there's no risk. So no need for masks at all.

So the only reason they are wearing them is not for "science" or "safety", but to virtue-signal to the TV audience or to show people watching the game that *they* should be wearing masks, because "see, we're wearing masks, so you should too!"

338 I subscribed to Scientific American as a youth in the 70s. When I was in HS, I ended up on our school's math team, and it was a monthly ritual to read Martin Gardner's math column in the magazine. My interest in SA waned as he retired from the mag, and the leftward tilt of SA didn't do anything to make me regret my decision.

What has happened to SA, and to science in general, is a tragedy.

I'm currently reading A Brief History of Disease, Science and Medicine by Michael T. Kennedy MD (a Moron author!), and it's wonderful. The centuries of superstition and pseudoscience did a lot to stifle technical progress, and kill a lot of people in the meantime. Kennedy's book documents a lot of these missteps in scientific understanding.

After science has made the world worth living in healthily, especially in the last 150 years, it's tragic that leftist pseudoscience, starting with the movement to ban DDT, is doing so much to plunge us back into those dark ages.

It's about finding working models so we can predict how things will behave. Even quantum physics, which is all about probabilities, has to produce models that reliably predict behavior.

And the models don't have to be -- and often can't be -- perfect. We know Newton's gravitation model isn't perfect, but it's still used for rocketry and other engineering. You have to get to really high velocity or other odd situations (like Mercury's) for the inaccuracies to be measurable.

Besides, most people believe they have The Truth. Believing that is as natural as being born human. This is why this political faction is now saying we need to buckle to all their points of the One Truth they have.

You got it in one. Chemistry and chemical engineering. The tenor of the articles these silly girls write for C&EN is all the impediments women face attempting to go into the field. Impediments? Really?

It's not hard to guess that these gals washed out of grad school and are bitter about it. But women face zero impediments on going into chemistry, and have actual inducements to go into research.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at September 15, 2020 01:36 PM (Tatvh)

See, for those reasons, I have NEVER understood this. This isn't an earlier time where girls would be actively preventing from going into fields NOT teaching or nursing. The gates are WIDE OPEN for the ladies to enter those worlds, and indeed, there are financial inducements to do so via things like scholarships.

Knowing all this, people, IF they were rational, would have to kick back and ask themselves a question out of introspection: "Hmmm...in spite of everything, why aren't girls plunging headlong into STEM fields?" The answer? It's uncomfortable, but here's my theory:

1) It's Because They Don't Want To.
2) And That's OK.

Points #1 and #2 make some people very, very, very upset, but there are countless Americans that find the concept of freewill to be very upsetting.

The moral of the story should be that all our boys and girls should be set free to do what it is they want. They'll all contribute to their families and society in a positive way.

Nah. Faked data are very rare outside of some biomedical journals because in chemistry and physics if you fake something of any significance, others will immediate try to reproduce it. Faked or cheered up data are much more prevalent in biomedical research because it is difficult to falsify someone else's results. You can always assert "biological variation" as the reason for their failure to reproduce your results.

And a considerable proportion of data fakery involves Chinese and Indian researchers. See "Retraction Watch" for supporting evidence of this contention.

By way of reply, I would quote a passage from the aforementioned The Devil's Delusion....

Neither scientific credibility nor sound good sense is at issue in any of these declarations. They are absurd; they are understood to be absurd; and what is more, assent is demanded just because they are absurd. "We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs," the geneticist Richard Lewontin remarked equably in The New York Review of Books, "in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories" (my emphasis).

Why should any discerning man or woman take the side of science, or anything else, under these circumstances? It is because, Lewontin explains, "we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door."

If one is obliged to accept absurdities for fear of a Divine Foot, imagine what prodigies of effort would be required were the rest of the Divine Torso found wedged at the door and with some justifiable irritation demanding to be let in?

If nothing else, the attack on traditional religious thought marks the consolidation in our time of science as the single system of belief in which rational men and women might place their faith, and if not their faith, then certainly their devotion. From cosmology to biology, its narratives have become the narratives. They are, these narratives, immensely seductive, so much so that looking at them with innocent eyes requires a very deliberate act. And like any militant church, this one places a familiar demand before all others: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

It is this that is new; it is this that is important.

It's also really hard, and there's no "interpretation" when it comes to chemical formulas or reactions. You can't talk about your feelings when you are in a lab, you have to measure, titrate, distill, and carefully document each and every aspect of what you do, so that it can be exactly reproduced by someone else in a different lab.

All of that takes precision and skill, and sometimes tedious labor. Why do that when you can just go to a class and talk about how your dad makes you feel....thus and so...and get an A?

And the Palestinians' rocketing trajectory to irrelevance goes back to 1991, whose events also were the macro state-setting to make possible everything we're seeing today.

Posted by: Moki at September 15, 2020 01:49 PM (+X9Vs)

Expanding on this slightly: I, as a male, am supposed to - if you listen to these fools - be heavily inclined to STEM fields. OK, so I love astronomy and things that dovetail into astronomy (it's basically applied physics, so I took physics and astronomy for my science credits in college), but I have ALWAYS sucked at math. But for whatever reason, I have always been wired for the written word. All throughout school, the teachers would say how horrified they were by how I held a pencil, and I was falling ever further behind in math...but my reading was off the charts. (The teachers who bitched about how I held a pencil were dumbasses and petty tyrants.) That throws a bit of a wrench in the theory, no?

Interestingly, when I went looking around for an alternative certification program for teaching (yeah, I know), what was I told? "You'd be perfect! We NEED more male teachers!" I have no idea WHY, but there you go.

528 Points #1 and #2 make some people very, very, very upset, but there are countless Americans that find the concept of freewill to be very upsetting.

Other than the American Religion (a degenerated offshoot of Christianity) and the regular heretic that popped up in the last few millennia (e.g. Pelagus, Erasmus, Arminius, Taylor et al) and were smacked down, the unregenerate "will" is "enslave to sin", loves sin and hates righteousness.

The will is "free" only in the sense that there is moral accountability, not that the person can turn off a penchant for sin.

The will is in enmity with God and thus isn't free in the sense that it can choose life and righteousness.

Luther and Edwards both wrote massive books on this topic.

I think so. It concentrated minds in the Middle East that they should ally themselves against Iran. What's the UAE's biggest threat - a country with a Med coastline that just might want to do business with them, or the big country across the Gulf from them that is actively pursuing nukes?

So a lot of deals and handshakes were done under the table between various countries and Israel as a result. I take nothing from Trump here. He saw this, and took advantage of it. So he's achieving something that other presidents and SecsState can only dream of.

And given our last ruler's foreign policy was aimed against two states: the United States and Israel, somewhere out there, He is fuming.

There are plenty of people who WILL vote who spend very little time thinking about politics.

They consider it their "civic duty" to go to the polls every four years, and what they do know is mostly Biden was that "nice man" who has been on teevee a lot. And Trump is that not nice man who has been on teevee a lot.

So when they wake up and pay attention this year, they'll see Biden stumbling around like old Vince who hangs around the general store, asking for change, with a vague odor of pee on his person. And Trump is smiling and joking and waving to raucous crowds waving American flags, and they'll decide then they like Trump better than Grampy Poopypants.

It really isn't a "lie". It's simply a poorly sourced/mostly refuted claim.

The press only needs a couple people to chime in and Hunter Biden was never under investigation and that's "debunked", and if you bring it up later, only Putin wins.

So, it's not a lie. But in comparisons to all that the press has called "lies", it pretty much qualifies.
