McConnell’s Principles Demand That Chuck Schumer Will Control The Senate No Matter Which Party Is In Majority [Buck Throckmorton]

Here is an unsurprising development, Mitch McConnell has taken a very principled stand, publicly proclaiming that only Democrats are allowed to change Senate rules, and that Chuck Schumer will be in control of the 2021-2022 Senate no matter which party wins a Senate majority.

To be fair, he didn’t word it exactly like that, but that is the effect.

Democratic insiders set up war room to quickly kill the filibuster

Schumer: Senate Democrats would ditch filibuster if needed to push Biden’s agenda through

Barack Obama and Harry Reid are openly calling for the end of the filibuster if the Democrats take control of the Senate. (Obama calls it racist, of course.) Schumer is openly hinting that he’ll eliminate the filibuster if Biden is elected. So in response, McConnell boldly announces that a Republican majority means the filibuster stays in place.

McConnell: Democrats would disfigure Senate by nixing filibuster

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) ripped Democrats on Monday over talk of nixing the legislative filibuster if they win back the majority even as they've used the procedural tactic to block recent GOP legislation. "This threat to permanently disfigure, to disfigure the Senate, has been the latest growing drumbeat in the modern Democratic Party's war against our governing institutions," McConnell said from the Senate floor.

In other words, McConnell has announced that if Republicans hold the Senate, Schumer will have the ability to block any GOP legislation with only 40 Democrat Senators. But If the Democrats win control, then Schumer can pass any legislation with only 50 Senators. Heads Schumer wins. Tails Schumer wins. This type of pre-planned and orchestrated failure is what the GOPe calls “principles.”

Cocaine Mitch is making a play for independent voters to choose the GOP.

This allows GOP candidates to claim that Democrats are total radical leftists, tearing down American institutions.

so it is sort of way too fine a line to walk. I don't think it helps with swaying voters frankly.

I don't favor ending the filibuster because I don't believe in crushing minority rights. If we didn't have minority rights we wouldn't have Trump.

I thought it was dumb idea when Reid ended the filibuster on judges and for him, boy howdy did it turn out to be. More Trump judged cleared today because there is no filibuster because Reid bowed to the voices in his party who told him to end it because they couldn't get Obama radical judges through. Thanks, Harry.

Except that there's no killing the baby here. The filibuster has no value. It doesn't restrain the Dems in any way, because they'll do away with it at the first opportunity. Meanwhile keeping it on the books means there will never be sufficient votes in the Senate to undo any of the things the Dems have inflicted on us, for example obamacare. 91 We haven't seen McConnell in full blown Senate Leader mode.

He may be what you call "lying" so as to soften his words.

I've reevaluated Mr. McConnell and I suspect he has decided that his "legacy" to the country is the mass conservative judges being appointed (and also not coincidentally filling court seats that have been empty for a while thus backlogging the Federal Judiciary).

I will bide my time and watch and see what he DOES rather than worry about what he says.
Unfortunately I can't vote for a Senator this year so it's up to all you guys out there to make sure we don't wind up on a tall stake after Nov 3.

92 Rather than doing away with the filibuster, I find myself wishing we could do away with the Congress altogether. The SCOTUS is the only real legislative body left, anyways.

94 I was hoping McConnell would get an effective primary opponent, but taking out an incumbent Senator in a same-same state is neigh impossible.

These fuckers have too much clout in the state. Including the press. Frankly, McConnell's wife Elaine Chao is entirely too close to China for my comfort.

Her being Chinese and all. Though it isn't as bad as I make it sound; she's from Taiwan. And they don't like the ChiComs at all.

All in all, fuck the 17th Amendment. And if I was a resident, I'd vote Mitch over the Dem no matter what.

Count on for what? On most issues you've got near half that are solid, another near half that is mercenary(which is good enough so long as you aren't trying to cut spending), and the remainder which is almost always antagonistic. It varies a good bit depending on what's coming up for a vote though.

117 Of course McConnell doesn't want to get rid of the filibuster. It would never have survived this long if it wasn't primarily of benefit to the majority party.

The whole point of the filibuster is to fool your constituents. You can raise money on an issue you don't actually want to see passed and then allow the minority party to kill it. It's win-win.

Schumer won't get rid of it either, except in specific circumstances where the outcome is important to Senators (as opposed to just the little people), like judges. Now, eventually the filibuster will go away entirely, because it's difficult to answer the question "If you could get rid of it for that other vote, why not for this thing that I care about?" But it's going to take a few more years before all the rubes catch wise.

Things could easily be worse especially these last two years with malig Nancy ruling the House.

There are failsafe mechanisms in place to keep the Uniparty in power. Even though the 17th Amendment makes the filibuster a nullity, the GOPe needs plausible deniability to explain to the base why the things they want, they won't get.

You know that's the case, because McConnell will do anything to keep his do-nothing colleagues in place, and starve any true conservative challengers of electoral oxygen to do it.

I think it's pretty unrealistic to expect anyone to get much done in the Senate no matter who is the Majority Leader given how divided the country is. Well, to be fair, we really don't have a representative government going back for at least a few generations.

227 Unless the Constitution is amended, the filibuster is doomed. There are some huge positives to ending the filibuster. The end of failure theater is a big one. But there is no question that the filibuster has also locked in place a lot of bad legislation over the years. The negatives are obvious - much more volatility/instability in terms of lawmaking. Wild swings from conservative policies to progressive ones. Also, as a man of the right, I generally think that Congress should make fewer laws and, in general, requiring a supermajority means fewer laws.

*If* the filibuster is worth keeping and Republicans hold the Senate, McConnell ought to bring an amendment to the floor to make it a permanent fixture of the constitution rather than a senate rule. If Democrats in either house vote to kill it, then accept that the Senate is no different from the house and strip it from the rules. A vote to make it permanent would at least clarify where everyone stands.

Ultimately, the filibuster can only survive if both parties are willing to live with it when they control the senate. If one or both parties aren't willing to live with it, why would either party wait for the other party to take advantage first? That's insane.

249 Which bill in the GOP's House made it past Mitch in the Senate?

He killed 75% of House bills 2016-18 in the Senate, including all major agenda items besides that tax-reform.

250 On the face of it, it does seem that way..
But McConnell cannot make any changes until he's assured a GOP majority.

All the ones bailing out billionaires while the GOP voted no on the 2nd Trump 1200 direct check, which Trump wanted. Cutting unemployment. Same shit throwing the middle class Americans under the bus for immigrants and billionaires and corporations.
They agree on that.
They agree on an anti-white platform as well.

255 The Senate and House. all of the despised D.C. is an over bloated central temple with priests lost in their bubble, It is time to starve them of their ill-gotten power. A government, in a free society, is only as strong as the people grant. Remind them Nov. election day.

A big one and a tiny one but I also live a block from the substation so we have never had to wait long for power even after a Cat 4 or 5.

257 I can see the Democrats doing what the Donks in Masachusetts do every time a Republican is elected Governor and they have a chance at replacing a rep or Senator, change the rules on their way out the door.

So if the Donks take over they nuke the filibuster, advance their agenda unimpeded, if they lose the Senate, they restore the filibuster as their last act before the GOP takes over and rely on the GOP being the mangy dogs they are.
Rinse and repeat as necessary.

charge of the big guns, which pretty well is the hallmark of the GOPe.

Yeah they pretty much hate #winning, Trump-style.

261 >>Ooh. I might evac if I was south of the salt line like that. Here it's not going to be much.

We're in Flood Zone A. My property elevation is nine feet about sea level. The house sits another couple feet above that. Evac order right now is voluntary. When the tide was in earlier this morning, water was overflowing the canal that abuts the property. It has since receded a bit, but will come back with high tide tomorrow morning, of course.

262 >>Which bill in the GOP's House made it past Mitch in the Senate?

I know you know this, particularly in a thread about the filibuster, but Republicans don't have 60 votes. They arguably have a reliable 50 and not enough to end the filibuster even if Mitch wanted to.

So why do you think anything major is going to get done in such a divided country?

Nothing big is going to pass until we either get 60 Senators or the country starts to become less divided. That's just reality. Blaming it all on Cocaine Mitch is convenient but it's not really fair.

Not letting bad shit happen is a much more meaningful measure of success. Mitch isn't my guy and I want stuff done as much as anyone but I also want a Ferrari and that ain't happening soon either.

263 I suspect there are a lot of temporary treatments for sundowning that are not used in general because they would wreak havoc on a person if used every day (like meth.)

So I wonder if they are planning to meth him up and have him look great in the debates, and this is all about lowering expectations so that when he looks OK people think they were gaslighted and gropin Joe is fine.

264 We are going to lose seats in the Senate this cycle, though I think we still keep the majority. McConnell doesn't have the votes to discard the filibuster and would be insane to signal that he was going to do it before the election in any event.

I think Earnst (IA), Collins (ME), Daines (MT), Loeffler (GA), and Perdue (GA) win, along with Tuberville (AL)

Losers are McSally (AZ, will have lost BOTH Senate seats), Tillis (NC, though he still has a shot), James (MI, will underperform Trump), Gardner (CO), and Lewis (MN)

That gives us 51 seats. I guarantee that there would be defectors (Romney, Murkowski, Sasse) on a vote to kill the filibuster. McConnell is making a virtue out of necessity.

Posted by: Seldom at September 15, 2020 06:47 PM (bcekj)

265 The problem with the GOPe nuking the filibuster is on things that matter you'll still get your Gang of Four, Gang of One, Gang of Two.

I wouldn't bet on Loeffler, she is hated by a large percentage of the base in Georgia. Collins isn't doing so well in Maine either from Maine friends I have who have family summer property up there for a few generations.

JackStraw, nothing but bad shit has happened since the 80's for late Gen Xers and younger. If you call falling slowly into the abyss instead of falling slightly faster into the abyss a success, we have much different definitions of winning and success.
