On Sunday, police arrested a man who confessed to starting a brush fire with a Molotov cocktail in Portland. They booked him in Multnomah County Jail. Portland being Portland, the authorities released the suspect that evening. The man then went on to start six more fires before the police arrested him yet again. The cops took him to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
If this behavior is peaceful, I would hate to see them if they were pissed off.
Rieli Franciscato, 56, the head of a program to protect indigenous groups that have little or no contact with the outside world, died Wednesday in the Seringueiras region, a remote municipality in the northern state of Rondonia, said a statement from the Brazilian government's indigenous affairs office, FUNAI, where he worked. FUNAI declined to say how he died. But witnesses said he was shot with an arrow while monitoring recent appearances by a tribe known as the "Cautario River isolated group," according to a photojournalist in the region, Gabriel Uchida. Lately, I've noticed, Ace has been loading so slowly that frequently my browser times out. Repeatedly refreshing, same result. Front page and comments both. This is while using my AT&T cell as hotspot. No other sites do that, just AoS.
Twice now, when that happens, I've switched on VPN and voila! Page loads plenty fast.
Could AT&T be suppressing .mu.nu? Seems unlikely, but... hmmmm.
VPN might mess up my IP for sock counting purposes, though.

anyway there was a mom with three babies around recently ... and we do get some people speeding thru unfortunately - it seems MORESO during lockdown - one speeder hit and killed a baby bear
all the little bears and the mama bear just keened and cried! it was the saddest thing ever
once my aunt tried to go to the bathroom in the small hours and a bear was hanging out in there lol

Sorry to be the downer tonight. It's been ridiculous here in the west.
Between the lockdowns, the mostly peaceful riots and now the choking smoke permeating everything, I'm starting to lose my shit. We didn't see a shadow all day. My eyes and throat burn. I'm coughing. The most wonderful thing I can do for myself is to go outside, sit on the beach, smell the seaweedy salt air and watch the mountains.
All gone.
Pray for us west coasters. This is tough.

Air purifiers are great, but if you don't have one, closing windows and running the furnace fan full time, so the air goes through the filter, is the next best thing.
I think Mt St Helens was worse. Volcanic ash is really abrasive. I think it messed up a lot of cars, inside and outside.

I live in an ancient house without such things as central air, so I had to get an air purifier. I think it has helped massively, to the point where when I leave my bedroom in the morning and get out around the house, my eyes have to get used to life outside the room and I undergo a minor sneezing attack. But this is what I need to do right now.
I can't imagine being in nurse ratched's situation. If it were me, going through the breathing troubles I have had of late...I'd evacuate and say "call me when it's over". Of course I know plenty of people out that way can't do that.
Rought times ahead for our people on the west coast and down near my old stompin' grounds of the FL panhandle (and points west)...

It feels really weird; who would ever put their house on sale when the very sky is clouded with the smoke of recent fires? But apparently some combination of low interest rates and not enough houses on the local market, plus being in a desirable location, is making it a really hot seller's market. Odd. I trust my real estate guy, or I'd think he was shining me on.

Fox is not unusual in getting R/D/I splits that are something like 49/46/5. A lot of polling units will push the Inds to pick which party they identify with or will use a secondary screen like "who did you vote for last time"
Most of the time it is kind of a wash because the Inds will split about 50/50 and the poll is pretty close.
Dem outnumbering GOP by 4 or 5 is not uncommon in a poll. Dems have more registered voters in general, while GOP has more reliable voters.
Where the problem comes is in a year when the Ind has a strong preference. Other polls show Trump leading 55/45 or even 60/40 with Ind.
I'm not going to pull out excel to rebalance this with a more realistic result, but this poll at best is a tie with registered voters.
And the voters are still being lied to about Biden's health. Once that becomes obvious, this election is going to start avalanching. Bad enough that it could have devestating down ballot impact.
The Dems are on course to pay dearly for fixing their primary for Biden.

I'm not usually on the ONT this early. Apparently I've been missing stuff.
Just walked Linda back to her place, as I do each evening. The wind is starting to pick up a little. We may not get rain until midday tomorrow, so I might be able to exercise early. All I worry about is the power going out.
And I still think Star Wars' opening text was capped by the words "Episode IV: A New Hope." I recall being surprised by it when I first saw the film on its initial run. Now, it's possible I have it mixed up with a later release, or saw it on video. But I didn't even have a VCR to play videotapes until 1985. Perhaps when it ran on HBO in the early Eighties, the text was new there and that's what I recall.
The only way to tell would be to run a 1977 print of the film, if such a thing exists. Or to find a contemporary review or commentary about the film in a newspaper or something.

anyway there was a mom with three babies around recently ... and we
do get some people speeding thru unfortunately - it seems MORESO during
lockdown - one speeder hit and killed a baby bear
all the little bears and the mama bear just keened and cried! it was the saddest thing ever
once my aunt tried to go to the bathroom in the small hours and a bear was hanging out in there lol

I never hunt them. What would I do with a dead bear? They aren't exactly fit to eat anyway. I've had coonhounds that would happily roll around in a gutpile, but still wouldn't eat bear meat. It's just awful.

Earlier today, when talking about clearing out the deadwood, someone complained that it would take a million acres of controlled burns a year to get it under control and keep it under control. A million acres! The size of the number daunted the guy.
I pointed out that the state of Florida does two million acres of controlled burns every year to keep its dry, oily, Zippo-like slash pine forests under control, and Tallahassee is not exactly a model of well-functioning anything.
Except, I suppose, by comparison to Pacific Coast state governments. Our ridiculous tinderbox forests don't light on fire and turn the state in a low-rent substitute for Mordor. Our stupid bullet train was actually built... and is privately run, even profitable until this COVID nonsense crippled it, like every other business. We don't have ridiculous taxes, or outright commies in government (or at least, they are quiet and unknown, and have no power).

I think both can be true.Trump is ahead in NC, and if he is not, we are are deep shit. But Trump is gaining with minorities but still it is close. The only answer possible is lefty liberal white jagoffs. Look at it another way, a previous Republican president had such numbers with various minority groups, the election would be a trouncing ala Mondale or worse.

Been there since 1981. Here's a video with all changes from the 1977 version, and the 2011 bluray. You can see that not only was the title added but they adjusted the spacing.

Austin Airs. They are built like tanks. I got mine used and they run 24x7. Air quality is awful out but I'm fine as long as the house is shut up. My stepson in Lincoln City says they are getting some rain!
As for St Helens, it's different for me. I was due south so didn't get much ash. The ash was more abrasive. It ruined the cylinder walls of your engine. Animals escaping from it usually died from inhaling the ash. But this has gone on four days now with hazardous air quality levels. Just glad I'm not out in it much.

And I still think Star Wars' opening text was capped by the words "Episode IV: A New Hope." I recall being surprised by it when I first saw the film on its initial run. Now, it's possible I have it mixed up with a later release, or saw it on video. But I didn't even have a VCR to play videotapes until 1985. Perhaps when it ran on HBO in the early Eighties, the text was new there and that's what I recall.
The only way to tell would be to run a 1977 print of the film, if such a thing exists. Or to find a contemporary review or commentary about the film in a newspaper or something.

That is my memory as well. Then learned that it was the first part of the middle trilogy of Lucas' planned trilogy of trilogies. So it made sense for the "Wall of Text" introduction (like the preface in a book, setting time and place (literally)) to begin with "Episode IV".
I saw it in a little theater outside an Air Force base. Most of the crowd must have been junior enlisted personnel, as they cracked up when Leia told Han to get "into the garbage chute, flyboy".

The photo in the original link you posted worked for me. I think such spontaneous community efforts have occurred here in Canada, too, when a farmer meets misfortune at harvest time. Farmers are acutely aware that they have no unemployment insurance to fall back on.

Another one is in Return of the Jedi I have never seen the added clip at the beginning of Luke making his green saber, but when it was released on BluRay that clip was added and people swore that they had seen it in the theater, but as far as all information goes it was never in any release.

One of my favorite movies of all time.
I'll never forget one time in the office, when I was a bright, shiny 1LT with friends of mine, one of who was a 2LT going for a master's in psychology. She very innocently asked, "Do you guys know of a movie that has a good depiction of basic training?"
Other LTs and the Captain with our group all looked at each other, unbelieving. We pretty much all said, in unison, "Full Metal Jacket". And the rest of the day was given to us all quoting the movie to each other all day long, more or less.

My cousin was a marine in vietnam during that timeframe. He was in that battle of hue. When the movie came out I made him watch only the beginning of the movie (didn't want to push it, he went through hell), and I asked if basic training was that bad. He said "yeah kind of, sometimes worse". Yeah, the worse thing stuck in my ears.

Another classic novel I want to read is Catch-22, but I admit the length throws me off.
On the one hand I get it could have been shorter; OTOH, Heller wasn't Stephen King, and I have a hunch he was exploring some complex ideas that needed space, plus he had so many great funny/satirical stories to tell about the armed forces and WW2.

The one and only color episode of Perry Mason is running on MeTV right now. It was an experiment during the last season. While not the last episode of the final season, it was close to it.
Victor Bueno is the villain.
Had they gone another season, it was going to be in color, and this was a test run for it. But they didn't go another season.

That's odd, and there is no known mechanism other than life for making it under the given conditions.

Perry Mason and Columbo are two shows I can watch over and over again and still enjoy it. Well, I couldn't watch the same episode continuously, day after day, but as long as a few months or so pass, I can keep watching them.
I've seen every Perry Mason and every Columbo episode several times over, and I still enjoy them.

Kids were just 1.5 when I found out the Ex was screwing around on me.
Kicked her to the curb, said I'm fighting for custody, and she did not really put up any fight about it at all.
Abandoned the kids for a few years, until I moved to Denver where she was living, so my Kids could have some relationship with their Mom.
Seemed like a good idea at the time, but 20 some years later, never should have done that.

In the room I am sitting in, right now.
3 guns, 12 swords, 2 Escrima Sticks, 1 Staff, 5 knives, including 3 parrying Daggers.
Due to taking care of my 91 year old Mom? Those are the only weapons in the house.
I qualified as an Expert Marksman in the Navy, with the M-14, and the .45. Carried a 12 Gauge on all the boarding Ops I did in the Navy.
I have 30 years of playing with swords, including being trained by Rob Chiles, aka Tora Taka, who is the best Rapier swordsman in the World (undisputed in Rapier communities), and my Best Friend is the only guy who gave him competition just a few years ago.
I'm 61, but in pretty good shape, and have One good Fight left in me.
I'm stuck living in California, with NO back up at all.
Things may get.... interesting.

I understand why many don't want to leave the place they grew up in, even if it is barely that place anymore. And also what comes will come. Sure if you live in the sticks it will be mostly something you see on tv or the net. But even those people are riled up about what is going on. Think of those who live in cities today. These people can't even safely put up a sign to support their candidate. Crime is skyrocketing and few are doing a thing about it. I feel bad for them but I also understand that many can't move or wont.
Let us hope for the best because this has to be the most made up schism in history. I am not saying there are not problems, but there have always been problems. What I am saying is there has likely never been less reason for people to be so divided. And there have never in this country been more elected leaders who don't give a damn about anything other than their own power.

Back when we used to talk about the Burning Times here, I predicted that the end game in the cities would be that gangs and militias controlled turf in a parallel government with the city, which did garbage and sewers and that soort of thing. If you can afford a private army or can arm your neighborhood for self-protection, you can reach an accommodation with the gangs and militias on your borders.

I am going to look into this. I get that Christians are supposed to turn the other cheek. But no movement will spread if people refuse to defend themselves. I really don't want to comment further until I read more about it.
One thing I think many miss about the Gospels is that of course they were speaking to the world, but also that they were placed in an historical context. You can't ignore the historical context and think it was plonked down to fit every time exactly. The history of the time matters and what was going on then matters.

I mostly don't get into theological arguments here as they don't seem to accomplish a lot. By that I mean arguments over who is right, Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists etc. I do enjoy learning about that stuff because it is interesting how things turned out. Not here, but so many Christians turn off study at all.
My personal opinion is the Bible was inspired by God and it is His word. Of course man played a major role. Heck, man decided which books got in and which did not. This should nor surprise imo as the Bible is God's Word to man.
I remember a class on the New Testament where the professor was a minister. You had several people object when he discussed the origination of various New Testament books. These will meaning kids objected to even the study of the books as history. Like I said, they thought of them as plonked down on the world from nowhere.
And yeah. There were rewrites and omissions. Most of these scribes were doing it by hand and by candlelight. They translated the verses from other languages. Man played a major role and that is historical fact.
None of this changes that it is is the word of God. But I never understood why some are so loath to study the history of it all. Then again, I guess I do understand. I can see people getting worried that bad actors would get involved. But history is history and it is part of it.

It's worth noting that Jesus is indicating a change in situation from the occasion He sent out 70, 2 by 2-that the circumstances of their journeys no longer applied, something that gets lost (deliberately, I think) today. The earlier section was the one where He sent them out as lambs among wolves and expected friendly housing to just be there when they arrived, for example.

With a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, and a W.E. Vine's Dictionary of New Testament Words, you will pretty much not go wrong.
Here's the problem with later versions in a nutshell.
1920s. It's cool, man, it's cool! (listener hands you a sweater).
Vernacular changes.
The King's English is fixed in IT'S time, and can be researched and fixed down to the meaning of the slightest nuance.
You can't do that with the fluid and ever changing English we've known since Colonial time.
Better that we reference a NOT CHANGING, time-frozen period of fixed meaning and nuance, and work up from there,.
By time a 2020 "translation" team completes their work, it'll be 2040, and the meaning of every word will have changed.

it is a a foolish concept by people who have never studied war. The only way to win a war is to apply so much pressure than one side gives up. And that only works if the other side has a reasonable facsimile of a state. The only thing I can offer re failed states is the king of the hill theory. The non historian Shelby Foote was wrong when he defamed USA troops by saying the "North" fought that war with one hand tied behind its back. He could not have been more wrong about that. And what a dumb thing to say when you think about it.

It is a gamble. They guess on the A and B strain what might be bad. Then they add in a few strain that have popped up. I think most years it covers between 4 and 6 flus.

Was on the phone with NFCU last night and they offered us a rate of 1.87% for a 15 year refi.
I was stunned and the lady on the phone said "I can't believe I am going to say this" before she quoted us that rate.
She said in the 20+ years she has been working as a mortgage counselor for NFCU she has never offered anyone a rate that low.
We are starting the paperwork today.

Outer bands have been hitting here for awhile. Rainy with winds gusting up to around 40 knots and scattered thunderstorms. It appears the eye will make landfall somewhat to the west. I saw some report on one of the financial news networks last week to the effect of a large ( larger than say, 30%) percentage of younger employees thought ESG concerns were more important than profits.
My first thought was, I'd fire every last one of them on the spot. You can pursue those goals to your hearts content, but not using my company.
