THE WITNESS

I sometimes ask myself, "Why is the New York Times allowed to exist?" And I don't mean: "Why doesn't the government ban the paper?" because that's not how I roll. But why is it that this roiling cesspool of lies continues to be supported after decades of outright lies, propaganda and just plain bad reporting. This is the paper that gave us Walter Duranty, for crying out loud. This is the paper that constantly warns of the dire threat of weather, whether warming or cooling, as this great roundup from American Thinker shows. (Notice how many other "respectable" journalistic institutions get in on the act that also still exist.)

Another great false headline from the Times.

It was a "fact" of the world that I grew up in that Americans were apathetic, unhelpful and cowardly, and this concept was constantly reinforced with the story of Kitty Genovese, a woman who was raped and murdered in front of 38 eyewitnesses, all of whom did nothing as she died alone in the street. This story was as well-known as it was bullshit, a fact baldly confessed to in the new documentary The Witness, by Ms. Genovese's younger brother, who himself believed the story (and who changed his life as a result). Somebody asked me "What's in it for them? Why lie about this?" Because they got to dictate the narrative for decades about how horrible Americans were, and that is the mission. (Americans/freedom/capitalism bad, Russians/authority/communism good.)

We are treated to an interview with the mastermind behind the scheme, who proudly confesses to the lie because it changed the world. (In case you were wondering why journalists lie all the time; they see it as their job.) We get to see Mike Wallace, who made hay on Genovese's corpse, with his stupid, silly grin, saying "Well, it was the Times! Of course no one checked up on it!" Social science dissertations were written with this story as its centerpiece. It's a journalist's dream come true.

Victimized twice, really.

The project seems to have begun 10 years ago, and details the efforts of William Genovese to find out the truth of what happened to his beloved sister. The impetus for the story came from, ironically, the New York Times which essentially rebutted its own story 35 years after the fact. And in this film, he quickly debunks the story by interviewing all the people in the neighborhood who are still living, most of whom (at best) heard a scream and saw nothing. (But who were so disgusted they never tried to correct the record. After all, when it's the media lying about you, where do you go? Especially in 1964!) And so an entire community is libeled.

He doesn't connect these dots, but at least two witnesses called the cops, even though the cops had no record of this. I think it's pretty clear that the police either decided "those people" (Italians, I guess?) were just "doing them", or that the police sent to investigate blew it off. Either way, at least one person who called was told they were on their way. They never arrived.

He does connect a lot of dots, though.

If that were all this was about, it would be a passable documentary but, in fact, this is just the beginning of the film. The rest of the film is about William, Kitty and (to a lesser extent) the murderer. This raises the proceedings to much higher levels. First we see William, who signed up for Vietnam because he wasn't going to be like those bystanders who watched his sister get murdered, come to grips with how that affected his life. Then we see him discovering his sister, whom he only knew by the limited way she presented herself to her family. He interviews old friends and lovers and comes away with a different picture than he started with.

Finally, he tries to get an interview with her murderer. This request is rejected. The murderer feels exploited, and that if not for all the press, he'd have gotten out by now, apparently overlooking his escape a few years after his capture where he raped and killed another woman and took hostages. Instead, we get an interview with his son, who is now a preacher. He also was greatly affected by the events of that night, and he's completely nuts about the subject. He's been carrying around this notion that these Genoveses were related to the Genovese crime family, and Kitty was, essentially, a hit. He's completely agnostic to his father's other numerous crimes and variety of conflicting confessions/alibis/narratives.

It's a fairly morose and somewhat morbid topic, but first-time director James Solomon keeps the proceedings tight and personal, without being lurid.

On the three-point scale:

Subject matter: Obviously important. Like I said, this was the
narrative that permeated life in the '70s. That it was all a lie
matters. A lot. Also, the examination of how crimes can affect people
long after the spotlight turns off also matters a lot.

Presentation: Good. The camera stays with William most of the time
as it is, in a very real way, his story. He did the hard work
of tracking people down 40-50 years later.

Bias: It was more neutral than I would've been, at least at the
macro level. On the micro level, we naturally grow to sympathize with
William, but this isn't really a story with "two sides". A murder was
committed, people were affected.

We had to travel to Santa Monica to see it late at night and we had no
regrets.

An actual witness. Or perhaps "witness".

7 First Reformed:

A priest, bereaved, drunk and ill, with weakening faith, is tempted by the devil, who looks, unsurprisingly, just like Amanda Seyfried. The pastor, his disillusionment further propelled by disappointment in the venality, blasphemy, vanity, and callousness of most of the people he meets, chooses the devil's evil path.

There's a lot of good but subtle stuff in here about ignorance or misunderstanding of scripture, and expecting things of God that nobody ought to expect. I know many conservatives panned the movie for its enviro-wacko plot-motor, and for daring to depict a priest far less than perfect. But I recommend it to the faithful and faith-curious, especially the first half, to explore the many earthly challenges to pursuing righteousness, which are truly answered nowhere other than in scripture.

(Full disclosure: all the stocks I hold are in the petroleum industry, so don't flame me for being green, because I ain't. Those who see the movie as pro-green didn't interpret it as I did.)

54 Went to see "Tenet" at the noon matinee. The wife and I were the only people in a 12-screen multiplex.

Excellent film, naturally, as it was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, who is my favorite director by a planetary mile. I went into it not knowing a thing about it (it's Nolan, I didn't need to know.)

Don't try to understand it, just go with it. It's typical Nolan - sophisticated, cerebral and unselfconsciously stylish.

Short take - it's Black James Bond with a time-travel MacGuffin. I didn't understand 90% of it and I didn't care. I was enjoying the ride too much.

Speaking of which; I read a book called "Citizen X" years ago and it was excellent. The movie that was based on the book is great. I highly recommend. Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland, Max Von Sydow, Jeffery DeMunn. A fantastic movie. Based on a real life serial killer case in the USSR. He was prolific (over 70 girls killed by him) because the Soviets denied he existed.

True story. Matthew Broderick plays a Boston Brahmin abolitionist who leads a regiment of freed Black man in the Civil War. The local generals won't let his boys fight, so he uses his family connections to intervene. He gets what he wants.

I saw Glory when it came out and I liked it. It holds up, but it wouldn't get made today. Too patronizing. And Broderick orders Denzel whipped for desertion.

105 It was horror movie week at Rancho naturalfake.

Here upon follow some quicky reviews:

1) Horror Stories 3 - popular Korean anthology series. This time set in space for some reason. Very meh. Except for Road Rage story - like a meaner "DueL"

2) The Wailing - excellent Korean horror movie - a bit like "The Exorcist" crossed with a whodunit or rather who is doing it. A bit slow but pay attention, you're being fed info that pays off handsomely in the insane last 30 minutes. Streaming on Prime and Netflix

3) Apostle - stars Dan Stevens, who I like as an actor. And movie seems to be headed in a Wicker Man direction, gets interesting with the introduction of a goddess turns very stupid, stays stu[pid, adds Daddy Issues, tries to redeem itself at the very end, but too late. Not good.

4) The Postcard Murders - serial killer movie. Boring, boring, boring, boring, boring, boring, boring Daddy Issues, boring, boring, boring, extra boring, bonus boring.

5) Zombie (1979) - directed by Lucio Fulci. Well, here's the thing, Fulci is a set piece director. He barely cares about plot. He gives you just enough plot and plodding pace, so he can get to the next gory set piece, whether it's a Zombie/Shark fight or a big wooden splinter in the eye. Recently updated in 4K, looks beautiful. Streaming on Shudder.

6) New York Ripper (1982) - have you ever said to yourself, "Man, I would love to see a serial killer movie where the killer viciously murders woman by attacking their womanly assets [while quacking like Donald Duck?

Well, then, buddy have I got a movie for you!

NYR is another Lucio Fulci movie, but this time he actually pays attention to the plot and as a result it's one of his best movies. Critics hate this one and say it's anti-woman. But, that's kind of the point of the killer for reasons which are explained as is the Donald Duck voice.

Warning! this is an ugly, violent movie and creepy. It's full of sleaze and paints, Ed Koch era NYC as a toilet bowl full of grime and criminality.

This really isn't my kind of movie, but it might be yours. It's very well done and since it's been updated in 4K, looks beautiful.

Pair it with "Cruising" for a horrible double feature of Serial killing isleaze n 1980s NYC, ie, Garbageville USA.

Check it out.

119 Pure background noise, but I have Tombstone on (mostly for Dana Delany) and I've seen it a gazillion times. I like watching movies for the tech stuff, and being a gun guy, well, the guns and whether or not they got them right. They did a pretty good job in Tombstone. Note most revolvers shown are nickel plated. Common, good marketing, and required less finish polishing than a blued gun. Next time you watch it, find the Evans rifle, it's there. Merwin and Hulberts are also in there, with the skull cracker grip. Early in the movie, while robbing a saloon/casino, Doc's whore has what appears to be a Hopkins and Allen XL. They came a long way from US Cavalry carrying 1892 Winchesters in 1873.

First and foremost, it debunked the reporting that the attack and murder took place in plain view under a street light, and that dozens of people were looking out their windows as the attack occurred.

The story is mostly a lie, but there are nuggets in there that have some truth. Such as, some who heard the initial attack, and yelled down below for whoever it was to stop.

This was an area where bar patrons were known to get raucous around that time of night. So after the initial attack, which took place on one side of the building, it went almost completely around to a part that was no longer visible to the onlookers from the apartments above the street (most of the supposed 38 witness, of which there were NEVER 3

.

So the one jerkwad who MIGHT have been able to save her life was a neighbor in her building, because he saw her outside her apartment, INSIDE the building, and seemed to be pleading for help. He didn't do anything, he just shut his door. She was subsequently attacked again, at which time she died of her wounds.

Other than that, yeah, it's basically bushitto.

Yes, the rape took place inside her apartment building... I don't recall if he dragged her to her room or not. He may have.

The one guy who needs to be held accountable for his actions is the neighbor in her building who saw her inside the building, BEFORE the killer returned, and she may or may not have called out to him for help, but he closed his door and went back to bed.

169 Very true, he was terrific in "Cop Land" portraying a simple, decent guy trying to plow through the deceit to get to the truth.

The very fit Stallone had to get a bit out of shape for the role, so he did. He was very good in the role. Out of character for him. It also had Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Harvey Keitel, Robert Patrick. It had some very solid actors in it.

I think it's because the Italians always did everything with style. They make crap cars, but damn do their cars have style! Got a multi-part documentary DVD set from the library, "Secret War", about various lesser known WWII operations and angles. Yesterday watched the one on Lucky Luciano and his cooperation with the Navy.

Learned more than I knew before about Luciano and the dock situation. The fire on the Normandie, the fear of Axis agents and sabotage. More than just about labor peace til victory.

New to me was the Luciano cooperation in getting intel and contacts to the US for the Sicily invasion. Allegedly Luciano volunteered to parachute in to help, a request that was turned down, but documentation does refer to at least one port where US forces linked up with Mafia contacts who helped them quickly roust Italian military and seize intel info.

Another episode was all new info to me - the Special Interrogation Group in North Africa, German-speaking mostly Jewish soldiers in the British/colonial forces who helped pull off some audacious operations involving deception.

I liked Longmire a lot. Katie Sackoff was excellent. She played a tough chick, but in no way in a Mary Sue way. A realistic tough chick, like the one I married.

Really good show, and they ran it just long enough. Like Justified.

I agree, I liked it quite a bit, and even better, I thought it dealt with the problems of Time Travel intelligently. I enjoy Time Travel stories, BUT they are extraordinarily difficult to plot out correctly, and a lot of efforts have botched the concept completely. "E of T" did a good job at setting up the rules for the universe that movie is set in, and then followed those rules. I especially appreciated the cycle where he decided to quit and do nothing, and he saw that if he did that the aliens were going to overwhelm London in a sneak attack and murder everyone. That provided the motivation for him to keep on trying to get it right, countless times.

The Sy-Fy one was good. This will be the third try at making a movie out of it. It will suffer the same as the other 2 attempts. Dune is a very cerebral book with much of the dialogue being thoughts. Hard to put that into movie form.

Yep. The book is great until after the attack by the Harkonnen. The rest, for me, just became tiresome. I finished it, but I liked the first part much more than the second.

306 Ace gave a review of Edge of Tomorrow and he seemed to like it. I think he had a complaint that you had all these montages of Cruise learning how to use the exosuit but you never really got the satisfactory moment of seeing him fully deploy it. That they spent all this time on him learning it and then towards the end you never see him in it. And I think ace got that wrong. The badass moment was not in learning the exosuit and being able to do everything in it. The badass learning was about him mastering the time cycle.

Kurosawa uses exaggerated caricatures of characters like you find in old style theater. But look at their counterparts, the Mexican villagers in the English version. They're just boring stand-ins who have almost no personality at all, they might as well be cardboard cutouts. I do think the Kurosawa version is much superior to the American version in everything except the Musical Score.

think of it as a style of dramatic storytelling that isn't very common anymore.

Very good film, and played out fairly consistently with the book. Ending was different, but it had a good cast.

I like the Negroni a lot.

It's more of an aperitif than anything.

I think it works best with a Navy Strength Gin. That way the juniper still peeks through the rest.

That's the thing. People are just going to start assuming "diversity" hires on films are because of the diversity quotas and it isn't about anything else. It's like the Jake from State Farm. I looked it up the original guy is just an everyday employee of State Farm so when the decision was made to create a spokesman character he probably wasn't in the running. But I know almost everyone assumes that the actor chosen was picked specifically for being a minority.

I own all of the Clancy books written by him, and Red Storm Rising is the best of the bunch, IMO.

There's a mashup of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Devil's Rain" directed by Brian Pulido, who draws Lady Death. It's also hard to watch except for the very attractive leads.

Seriously. I enjoyed it way, way, way too much.

As my best friend put it to his (now ex-)wife, "Some kids carried around the Bible in school. Catch had Red Storm Rising. I used to give him shit for it until I finally read it, years later..."

In JROTC we went to football games to "guard" the section with the dance teams, band, etc. On the way home those of us who read the book kept yelling "LET'S HAVE AN ATTITUDE CHECK!!!" (Of course, we dare not CONTINUE the attitude check. The nerds, of which I was one, who all read Red Storm Rising all snickered.)

Then, late in April 1994 the TV was on ABC for some reason on Saturday afternoon as I was getting ready to go to work. Then I saw a preview for it. As soon as it was over I bolted for the phone to call one of my buds who was a huge fan of the book and was looking forward to the miniseries. As soon as I grabbed the phone, it rang. Who called? The exact same dude I was going to call.

388 Oblivion was better that Edge of Tomorrow, the first time through. The reveal is a big part of the enjoyment. I can watch Edge of Tomorrow more than once and still enjoy it.

Plus I think Cruise is better in Oblivion. "What was your mission! WHO ARE YOU!" is a great scene. He plays rocked really well.
