Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1076)

Goal: Black can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: Chase the king out of the corner and mate him on h3

20200912 - Problem 1.jpg
4k3/1p3p2/pqbQp2p/8/4PP2/1P6/1P6/3R3K b - - 0 1

Temptation

chess pic 20200912.jpg
Angel: You have the advantage. Play simply, without complications.
Devil: Sacrifice a piece and attack like a berserk crazy man! He won't see the best defense. What are you waiting for? Come on!

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1049)

Goal: White can force mate in 4 moves
Hint: Deal with that pesky rook first

20200912 - Problem 2.jpg
r6r/1ppq1k2/p2Pp3/5N1p/1Pn1nP1P/8/P1PbK1Q1/8 w - - 0 1

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1199)

There are many mating lines in this problem. What is the longest one, that is, for how many moves can Black stave off defeat?

Hint: Black can hold out for, at most, 6 moves

Beginner Problem - Black To Play

20200912 - Problem 1.jpg
4k3/1p3p2/pqbQp2p/8/4PP2/1P6/1P6/3R3K b - - 0 1

It's a mate in 3:

1...Bxe4+!
2.Kh2 Qf2+
3.Kh3 Bf5#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20200912 - Problem 2.jpg
r6r/1ppq1k2/p2Pp3/5N1p/1Pn1nP1P/8/P1PbK1Q1/8 w - - 0 1

White can force mate in 4:

1.Qg7+ Ke8
2.Qxh8+ Kf7
3.Qg7+ Ke8
4.Qg8#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20200912 - Problem 3.jpg
3qbbk1/1p5p/p1ppP3/P7/2N3BP/2P3R1/3B1P1K/8 w - - 0 1

1.e7 Bg6

Best. The other options end the game more quickly:

a) 1...Bxe7 2.Be6+ Kf8 (2...Kh8 3.Rg8#) 3.Rg8#
b) 1...Kf7 2.Rf3+ Kg7 (2...Kg6 3.h5+ Kg7 4.exf8=Q#) 3.exf8=Q+ Kg6 4.h5#
c) 1...Qxe7 2.Be6+ Kh8 3.Rg8#

1...Bg6 blocks off the 'g' file for awhile:

2.exd8=Q h5
3.Be6+ Kg7
4.Rxg6+ Kxg6
5.Qxf8 c5
6.Bf5#

So Black can hold for, at most, 6 moves.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

I squinted and read most of the Twitter post, the black screen that was being quoted.

Not only is the campaign terrified of leaks or being hacked; not only are they using de-aging tech on Joe's face in vids; not only is he having good days and bad days with the dementia; but his medicine, the writer says, is making him incontinent. It's why he didn't take questions after announcing Camela as his running mate -- he had to do some running himself, to the bathroom.

Are any of us surprised by any of this?

I believe that. Rush was hinting at that by saying why is Joe holding these weird pressers with 3 people in circles 20 ft away - it's not normal social distancing. I thought it's because he's incontinent and they don't want anyone close enough to smell it.

89 ibguy always had positive things to say when I first started going through my Family Issues. As he was losing his Sister, Joyce I tried to return the favor, in-kind.

He wrote to me after her loss and was happy to note all of the friends that had surrounded him with love and prayers. He also spoke of being prepared for the loss, having what he called a "miraculous" Extra Year with her.

He was a kind, gentle reminder of things that pass in life and how to know when you are blessed.

God rest his soul and thank you, God for a reminder of, and from a friend I have never met.

He also said Trump is probably the most effective President we've ever had.

183 Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

249 It appears that the name “Balestra Mate” (performed by a queen and bishop) was first used as a tag on chesstempo.com–in order to distinguish it from Boden’s Mate (which involves two bishops). An important observation here is that the case of Balestra Mate, the bishop MUST be the checking piece if the queen has the task to block all escape squares (without the help of the opponent’s own pieces).

I had never heard of Balestra's Mate before. But that's what this problem is.

My Dad does that. His dementia comes with all the varied mood-swings. Just to add a laugh to it, sometimes when he is "cornered" by flaws in his logic, he tells me... "go scrub your nuts!" (I usually laugh)

That's also when I know he is about to storm-off and I'll be dealing with "drive-by anger" for the rest of the day. *shrugs*

Life on life's terms, man.

Almost got it, now's the fun part .... going in for the kill.
Questions:
What color square is the king on?
Can the King move to any other square?
What color is the Bishop?
Find the answers to the above and the solution will come to you.

Condolences to ibguy's family and to Wyatt

346 Afternoon all. Just saw that Hank passed away. May he rest in peace. I know he is spending time with his sister Joyce and catching up.
The SWOH morons heard from him a couple weeks ago when he dropped out of organizing this years mome.
Not sure what to say about the meet-up. He seemed to be the driving force behind it.
If by chance his wife or daughters stops by, Gail & hannah & Sarah, he will be missed by all of us.

347 It really sucks about ibguy, a few weeks ago he said he wasn't going to be able to organize the Ohio meetup anymore this year and if someone else could. I'd been thinking to shoot him an email to find out if he had and now finding out about this is just so sad.

Buzzion, I remember he mentioned he had some news(?) or something on a day thread a month or so ago, but was going to post details on ONT ? I am not sure if he did.

Fun Fact:

Andrew Weisman was one of the lead prosecutors of Arthur Anderson, one of the indictments against Arthur Anderson execs was the destruction of "evidence," even though the "evidence" in question was destroyed before it was even subpoenaed.

362 It's odd not to have living parents. You always think they'll always be there.
Posted by: Wyatt Earp

My father died of cancer over 43 years ago. A lifetime has passed since he died. And I don't think a day has gone by that I did not think of him at least once.
My mother died over 10 years ago. At the funeral, my cousin remarked that she thought my Mom would be the first person she knew to live to be 100. She died just after her 89th birthday, from complications and injuries from an auto crash (she was a passenger). Otherwise, she was in good health.

All my aunts, uncles and older relatives have passed. My oldest cousin died of cancer a couple of years ago.

As one of my other cousins said at the funeral, we've now become the older people of the family our parents were.

My oldest sister is 70, and my next oldest sister will be 68 in a few weeks.
Time passes, and death eventually comes for us all. Life is for the living. Enjoy it while it is here.

Good bless you, Wyatt, and I hope your Mother rests easy now. Her race is done, and I hope the most cherished memories are happy ones.

God bless and Godspeed to IBguy and his family.

He will be missed.

My wife and I talked about that the instant we saw it - we believe she chose a piece that was loosely modeled on a British Army Officers Dress Uniform of the 30's and 40's, and I'm sure (although I don't have a photo handy) that something along these lines was what the female members of the British Royal Family would wear in public appearances during WW2. If so, that would mean the symbolism of her choice was devastatingly appropriate.

btw the idiot who claimed she looked like Leni Riefenstahl used black and white photos to do so, because undoubtedly Riefenstahl's pseudo-uniform would have been a shade of light gray. The choice of deep Olive Drab is the symbolic identifier.

389 Ignoramus, quite likely none of that is true (about NYC and virus). And also likely travel bans, while "the right thing to do" - don't, and didn't, make any difference.

The fundamental error of thinking one can affect a prevalent respiratory virus much - in any way - is at the base of every Team Apocalypse, AND most "skeptical", observations. It's one disastrously reinforced by the WH task force to this day.

Blood sample, sewage, and arguably ILI presentations before 1/1/2020 indicate virus was present in North America and Europe nearly a year ago. Horse, barn door, some assembly required.

Differential fatality rates by "race" - like most differentials by "race" - will likely disappear once relevant screens (age, medical condition, multi-generational cohabitation, etc) are applied.

And though definitional problems were already obvious (even Birx mused about 25% excess death count, early on), it is probably much worse than even serious people already assumed. The misuse of the PCR test may well mean that even more "with COVID" deaths are reasonably disallowed or placed in a provisional category than as earlier assumed.

412 Oh, and on another thing, the Adams comment about things happening in the Middle East that weren't thought possible, that actually started long before Trump, and without those blocks in place, likely none of this would be happening (though counter-history is always a boring taffy yank). But many of those things are now in disfavor and aren't polite to talk about.

I assume Adams like most doesn't really know that much about the region and subsists on a vague generalization about things, that would explain that comment.

Morocco has had a relationship with Israel going back decades - which is not surprising (distant, especially from the dominant and thug states of the eastern Arab world). Would be great but unsurprising if that were finally formalized.

423 Polish is hilarious, as I recall from trying to understand my great grandma, "Bapka", Amelia Korytko* back in the 70s before she passed.

I bet Karina Szczepkowska is pronounced "Karina Spowska".

So many letters!!!

*I mention her real name because even though she was a simple farmer from Western Massechusetts who died 45 years ago, as long as someone remembers her name, she is not truly forgotten.

427 For the model builders wanting to build one of the 119th FW "Happy Hooligans" F-16A Block 15 ADF Vipers that flew over DC for the 20th anniversary of 911, looks like the Kinetic kit in 1/48 scale is your best bet.

https://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/kin/kit_kin_48002.shtml

Only things missing from the kit are the 501 pylons and AIM-7 Sparrows for a proper 2,2,2 loadout. And it seems there are no decal sheets for 119th F-16s so will have to make your own.

In 2007 the 119th retired its F-16s though the unit still exists, just no more fighters.

488 234- Re: The 4Chan post. I hate to say it, but IMO no low-level staffer at the HQ of a presidential campaign, which would have hundreds of employees, should know that stuff unless indeed that paranoia about using email and Zoom means everyone talks freely and therefore the place is a full-fledged gossip establishment (while wearing masks, of course). Or the person was in a position in which they were privy to overhearing that type of stuff just by the sheer nature of his/her job.
Posted by: Vendette at September 12, 2020 06:12 PM

Definitely not impossible. It would also be a sign of an HQ that is disorganized and undisciplined. Plus it says something about the Democrats themselves that such things would be common knowledge and treated like nothingburgers because gotta beat Trump.

He mentions he was in the campaign HQ in Philly, where I would suspect that a lot of high-level work takes place. It would be more of a stretch if he was in some office in the hinterlands. As for disorganization and lack of discipline, I think that has been on display in abundance. Exhibit A- TJ Ducklo. On the whole, everything he says sounds plausible to me.

516 To Wyatt and all the other orphans out there, my deepest condolences. When my mom passed away in 2003, two years after my dad, my first thought was "I'm an orphan now" even though I was 43.

Posted by: Moonbeam

Not only have I had the "orphan" thought since my Mom passed on the 31st of August, following my Dad who passed in 2016, but there is also that thought of: "Well, I guess my generation is next. Better make the best of the years that are left".

Parents are an anchor even of you are far away and don't see them frequently. When you lose the last of them, it's like being cast loose into the depths all alone.

519 Stray Data Point: There is a virtual forest of TRUMP flags flying from boats in the marina today, plus several Gadsden flags and lots of American flags. Biden Flag Count: ZERO

And this in purple Orange County California, which purportedly went for The Witch of Chappaqua in 2016.

Based on my extensive observations over time, I think this is a winning move!

524 Cicero, perhaps you've departed to movies, but -

I know at least one boat owner in that marina who will be quite upset at the skeery display of racist right-wing extremism (Trump flags). A complete ignoramus/hamster-level intelligence when it comes to "politics".

There have now been 2 Trump boat parades in San Diego Bay. I won't be surprised if there's another before November.
