First-World Problems...Part [I Have Lost Count]

How they work for as long as they do is actually pretty impressive. They are at ground level, exposed to the elements and extreme changes in temperature, so I guess I shouldn't be too exercised by this common problem.

My assumption is that the cylinder is eroded by dirt and the shaft, and eventually both build up enough friction that it doesn't always return to ground level. The fix is temporary but easy...a squirt of silicone lubricant and it works fine for months.

Part of my property is a thin layer of topsoil over red rock, so I am in a never-ending battle with erosion. That requires adding topsoil and reseeding every few years on the thinnest portions, and if I don't water for a few minutes every day, it will be wasted as the seeds blow away or simply don't grow.

Yes, it is a titanic struggle with nature; on par with having to hunt for my food every day and fending off larger predators who are hell bent on eating me and my family.

If you use herbicides then, it's less effective. You want to apply just after a rain. The blackberries open back up and take in the herbicides through leaves and roots. We found it to be true. The only other effective way to kill them is distrubing the roots three years in a row.

29 we had a hell of a string of blackberries at a house we used to own. It took having a contractor with a small dozer/scraper to literally tear away parts of the hill they were growing on to get them out for good. the roots run long and deep in some areas and the damn things are hardy as hell. I've seen goats annihilate BB bushes in several days as well.
I never had any luck pruning or hitting them with pesticides. It was the scorched earth approach i described above that did it.

Truly, I despise these watering systems. Every one I've watched closely, ends up being more trouble than it's worth, in terms of failing sprinkler heads, bad electrical switching or acutators out in the zones, etc.

Plus, NO kind of plastic long endures in the harsh Texas sun.

Give me some old-fashioned "tat-tat-tat-tat-TATTATTATTAT!" ratcheting/reciprocating sprinkler heads. Metal, preferably brass. And sticking up about 4" out of the ground atop thick copper pipes, set into landscape borders or other protective features.

And an analog, cam-wheel or "put the pin into the desired time-slot-on-the-wheel", electro-mechanical control box. Nothing computerized.

More or less a "set and forget" system, designed to work for 15 to 20 years.

The stuff they sell at the Big Box stores are pretty much 100% suckers' bet grade. And I'm not buying in.

Google Classroom is awful. Using it this spring, I had multiple problems, from students' submissions not showing up to answers not showing for practice questions. When I researched solutions, I found the same questions posted on Google Help - posted as long ago as four years and NEVER resolved.

I just did a Google training to incorporate all their educational tools. The first lesson was propaganda about how great Google is. The lesson on privacy and online safety was 20 minutes long, despite being listed as a 1-hour lesson.

As for Zoom, I can't use it at home because my anti-virus software rightfully identifies it as high-risk and goes to audio-only.

takes me 15 minutes from the end of my driveway to go to the river, fill up and return

used it once this year

I read somewhere that we've been brainwashed about lawns. I can't even remember what I read, but they were intended for something else and now they've become ubiquitous and they should be rock gardens or -- I can't remember what the other thing was, maybe plain dirt or lots of bushes or maybe paving. I've seen plenty of lawn-alternatives that look great. Not a lawn to be seen in Tucson, that's for sure. All cactus all the time.

My FWP this week was my wife found her old walkman digging through some old stuff and decided she wanted to listen to some of her old cassettes. Of course it plays back slow with new batteries and searching the net you can adjust the playback speed with the turn of a screw, but every damn model has the little potentiometer in different place, so I a still trying to find it.

If you use herbicides then, it's less effective. You want to apply just after a rain. The blackberries open back up and take in the herbicides through leaves and roots. We found it to be true. The only other effective way to kill them is distrubing the roots three years in a row.

84 Up in NW GA in the 00's there was a pretty severe drought caused in a good part by some legal disagreement I forget the details of now. But it just got progressively worse over time. First it was, you could only water a few times a week. Then, it was divided up by your address, even and odds. Then it was you could only water at night, then once every other week and then finally thou shall not put water upon thy yard ever. With the one comically insane caveat that if you had a new yard put in you could water it however you like for two months and then you were back to never water and your yard would die.

I didn't have an automated system so I was traipsing out around my rural yard at night in the dark with a head lamp
turning on faucets and stuff. Deer and possums walking through my yard at night looking at me like I'm an idiot. And then they canceled it all and my yard died.

I've never understood the love affair w lawns. IMO, it's another one of those things that, on your death bed, you don't regret not investing more time tending. As long as the weeds are a tolerable height, looks good to me.

I have a trailer and a small lawn. I had never owned a place where I had to mow the law before. Since I went into the service I hadn't mown a lawn till I got here. That was 40 years.

Needless to say I remembered how much a Pain in the ass it is. Even tho it's a small lawn. (8' x 65')

I plotted and schemed. I killed it for 2 years running as I was going to cover it in river rock and turn it into a rock garden.

The park owner said; NO.

So I hired a guy across the street to mow it.

Interestingly enough, the weed killer caused everything to die and not come back except clover which is a low growing plant so it worked out well cause before that grass could grow like 6" in a month. (lots of rain and sunshine here)

Wells are going dry. Still very few water storage projects are being built. Growth is off the charts. Where is the water going to come from. Do and Hawaii are the only states that have no water flowing into them. We stopped watering the lawn several years back the cost was just to high. Snow melt is our water source if we don't store it we are screwed.

UV light will degrade (non-treated) PVC pipe over time. Regular white plumbing PVC pipe, such as Sch. 40 or 80 or the SDR versions is not treated. Electrical grade PVC is usually treated to be sunlight resistant, but it's not pressure rated.

I was reading something the other day about the results of some tests they did on sunlight degraded PVC pipe. After a year, the tensile and compression strength did not degrade by any significant amount, but the impact strength was shot to hell.

That means it will still hold pressure, but it becomes brittle and a blow will cause it to break.

115 Jim, here they have these giant rolling booms that have sprinkler heads on long dangly hoses that put the sprinkler just at the crop head height. They are like the central pivot irrigation systems, but they don't pivot, they just roll forward and the next day, back again.
they would have the cost of more equipment, but the benefit of never hitting the sprinkler head with the mower.

If I had an open yard, instead of trees and berries, I would consider that sort of solution.

Out here in the country, with well water, lawn sprinklers have never been a thing. In this area, irrigation for crops has never been much of a thing either, just no water sources of enough capacity for it. There are some exceptions, such as irrigation from creeks near bottom land.

But irrigating a lawn? Waste of water. With the new subdivisions that are rising up like a pestilence, they've been putting in sprinkler systems, but they're on city water.

I've heard of contractors actually putting in sprinkler systems for houses on a well, which sounds like someone trying to make extra money off somebody who doesn't know any better.

The multi-use baseball field we practice on is Astroturfed (or the modern version thereof), and it's very nice. Besides saving the city on water and lawn mowing, the problem with grass is that guys playing football or soccer on it after a heavy rain chew a field up into a muddy mess that takes six months or more to recover. By which time it will have rained again.

I had to fix a water system like that in Florida. I had to replace a fitting to install a water softener.but as I tried to remove the old, a section of pipe would break off. I wound up doing that for about an hour. told the owner I would have to replace the entire feed line because. He hit the roof but by then I was half way into it.

Neither one of us was happy as it turned an hour job into a 4 hour visit to hell. I just barely had enough pipe to do it as I didn't need a lot of pipe usually.

He was one of those old time Floridians. The ones who hate the yankees and think they King Shit of all they survey.

Watched me work. Every damn second. I hate that. When I asked him if he would stop, he got all huffy and said he was paying for my work so he was going to watch. Didn't offer a drink or shade. *prick*

If you ever have a section of PVC plumbing pipe tha has to be exposed to sunlight, paint it. Just about any paint will absorb the UV, but you can look up the best paints for PVC pipe.

Now electrical grade PVC pipe is treated to be sunlight resistant and you might wonder about using that.

Don't do it. Mixing the two, using plumbing pipe for electrical and vice versa is the mark of a jackleg. If you see some electrician using white PVC pipe, don't trust anything he does. :-)

They make an enzyme you spray on your lawn that severely retards its growth rate, makes your turf more durable with a better spread. You can reduce your cutting to a third. Golf parks use it. I worked with a guy that was really into lawns, it was his hobby, and he told me about it.

The field I was talking about originally had some Astroturf that WAS nasty to slide on. It also played faster than hell on ground balls. It was like fielding on a billiard table; the ball didn't check up at all. We used to laugh when a newbie loped over to field a line drive on the bounce, only to have it rocket past him to the fence. The good part was it taught everyone to haul ass and get in front of everything, and not just get close and reach for it, the way you could do on grass.

But then two years ago the city replaced the (now worn) Astroturf with something that is great. It plays pretty much like grass.

You may wonder what's the difference between electrical and plumbing grade PVC pipe. They are made from the same stuff, but the finished product goes through different paths.

Plumbing grade pipe material is tested and quality controlled for pressure and plumbing standards. Electrical pipe is tested and controlled for electrical standards.

So while say a piece of Sch. 40 PVC conduit would probably hold pressure fine, it is not tested and rated for it.

I've let a couple areas of the property, mostly "out back" return to nature. It's going on 3 years now. At first is was tall grass and a few weeds. Now, it's mostly really big weeds, tall grass and a few seedlings of some type of tree I could care less about. I'm curious as to what will eventually win out.

I found out about the green army that's been waging war on my brick paths and ME for that matter -- ferns pluming out so I couldn't walk on the paths. Use metal conduit unless it's a long way and unsupported.

There's galvanized pipe and wall clamps and junction boxes at either end. And actually you can get wire for a communication (low voltage) line that can run bare. You might want to use some galvanized wire for extra support and put in loops for expansion and contraction.

PVC conduit is rigid, and they make standard elbows and fittings for it. With conduit, since you're pulling wire through, the elbows are high radius, not short plumbing elbows. And yes, you can bend PVC, but that needs some more specialized equipment.

Any big box store will carry the standard pipe and fittings.

Me, I'd probably just use EMT for that. Pulling wire through PVC, while done all the time, can be a little tighter to pull. PVC conduit is smoothed on the inside more than plumbing pipe, I think, but it still can be a bitch to pull sometimes compared to EMT.

I watched the documentary on Theranos on one of those streaming services, and she (elisabeth holmes) was unbelievable. Dropping out of Stanford at 19 because she already knew enough about biology, chemistry, engineering and medicine to create this pie in the sky device that would perform over 200 tests with one drop of blood?

It would have been amazing if true, and plenty of people wanted to believe it, but simple analysis of the format would show it to be impossible. Plus, her engineers said from day one they couldn't do all of those tests in one tiny device.

The fact that she was using venipuncture and performing the tests in house on traditional devices, rather than her '"invention" was horrid. What made it worse was the number of people relying on those tests and they were predominantly incorrect. For medical tests. This woman needs to go to jail for bodily harm. But apparently she pled mental illness. That is an insult to people who truly have mental illness.

366 Smash I began installing 6 inch PVC pipe with a notch cut out at the bottom for our sprinkler heads when they go bad.
step 1: dig out the dead sprinkler head.step 2: cut a length of six inch diameter PVC pipe that is slightly longer, maybe a half inch longer, than the sprinkler body.step 3: using a piece of scrap board that's about three feet long as a ground level scree, expand the sprinkler hole until the PVC pipe will fit vertically with the lip of the PVC pipe at about one half inch below ground level. use the scree board to verify that it fits.
step 4: install new sprinkler head and slip the PVC pipe over the sprinkler with the notch on the bottom to provide a relief through which the water supply hose will fit.step 5: fill the cavity between the PVC pipe and the sprinkler head with pea-gravel
Now, when that little bastard dies again, just grab the PVC pipe with channel lock pliers, and pull the pipe out. scoop the pea gravel into a bowl. replace the sprinkler head, replace the PVC pipe and pea gravel. no more digging.

They have been working on electric cars for years. Elon found engineers and gave them a task that was actually achievable. The idea behind theranos was mindblowing, but after listening to what she was offering, it was not feasible. One drop of blood is simply not sufficient to support the number of tests she was saying her machine could run. Some of those tests were ones my kid has had, and they required VIALS of blood for proper runs.

But to reduced the costs of tests, and perhaps in the end, reduce medical costs way below what they are now? That would be worth trying. But she didn't really know what she was doing, she didn't allow her staff to actually make a viable machine, she just wanted results immediately, and to become rich and well known like Steve Jobs.

Yeah, there's no way Tesla stock should be priced as it is.

However, now that Tesla's launching their satellites all over the sky (Amazon too),

I've begun to think that they may be the first up with an operational "driverless car".

You would need an exquisitely sensitive and precise redundant, widespread GPS system to make that work properly,

and Tesla may be doing just that.

We'll see.

My sister from Olympia WA says that while the smoke from our wildfire was rated 45 on the air quality index hers with all her wildfire is rated > 200. I thought ours was terrible so hers must be horrible!

The difference is you can see the smoke and ash from the fires. With volcanic ash, it's higher up. I read about the year with no summer and that's when I started checking for volcanic eruptions.

I was really kinda bummed out about my son's high school graduation. It was a drive up and let him walk across a temp stage take pictures and go. Two days later I watched a Zoom Graduation for my Nephew, one hour into it they were still on the H's going alphabetcally. I was so glad to have had the drive through, and I certainly cannot imagine sitting through a Michelle speech.
