When I was in college, I used to swim laps in the deep end of the school's Olympic-sized indoor pool. One day, I forgot to take out my (hard) contacts before I jumped in to swim. After completing my laps, I got out and realized they were gone. A friend of mine got in the pool to help me look for them. I gave up and was already back in my dorm room when I got a knock on my door. After looking for about a half hour, my friend had actually found one of them down near the drain!

O/T but art related:

According to an early review for the book, titled Troubled Blood, the storyline centers around a cisgender male serial killer who dresses up like a woman to murder his female victims. Activists, reviewers and people in the transgender community are pointing out that the book has an anti-trans plotline that could be harmful to the community.

Holy smokes, she it totally calling their bluff.
Sounds like she is using her fiction to demonstrate how trans activist demands re: allowing men in women-only spaces can be abused by men pretending to be women. Nice.

While that's the Far Side I think of in terms of the punchline most frequently, there's another multipanel cartoon of an alien trying to teach a pet tricks and the pet struggling to do the last one. The frsutrated alien owner yells, "Kakaphooney! PHOONEY!" at the little pet and it gets it right.

215 Calvin and Hobbes was always good, but it really became art after the Sunday format changed. Instead of two rows of framed cells, the format expanded to break out of the edges. Watterson could use the entire space to showcase his formidable artistic talent and create a deeper strip. I really liked how he made Calvin's imagination scenes more realistic than his "reality".

229 Late to the thread, dammit!

Larson painted a lot of riverscapes with powerful, stormy waters and endangered ships. This one is restful, almost serene. The various shades of blue, none overly harsh, are relaxing. The viewer can almost hear the creak of the ropes and soft sounds of water against the hulls and shore. The line of lights in the water shows just how calm the area is. It is very effective.

Thanks, CBD. What an enjoyable, pleasant scene to start the day.

Take 1000 20 somethings, confine them to their dorm rooms and limited excursions within a 25 mile radius for 6 months over the summer and be shocked when there are incidents. Then make everybody get counseling.

Most but not all. There was once a James Bond strip in one of the British newspapers prior to the first movie and extending for a few years after. The way they drew Bond was remarkably like Sean Connery even before he was cast. They were dramatic strips, adapting the Fleming novels to a visual format before the movies took up the property.

They're been doing this in Phoenix, Atlanta, and South FL (Broward) for years. DeSantis only managed his narrow victory by sending in poll watchers to shut down the shenanigans.

One big source of optimism is that Democrats thought they had PA in the bag in 2016 because of what they had arranged in Philly. But the rest of the state had figured out the game and refused to report until after Philly.

I think the red swaths of these purple/blue states are learning how to fight back, another source of concern for Democrats and why they pushed for mail in voting.

I have it - they had it at a very reasonable price at Costco a few years ago, so I bought it for Christmas. One collection worth getting is 'History of the Far Side', because it shows some of his cartoons in their developmental stage. There are also some flubs, where a cartoon was printed with the wrong caption. And sometimes Larson himself just has reflections on his cartoons, years after he drew them. One I like is a group of surgeons, seen from the back. I think the caption is something like "Make a wish!" but I like Larson's comment on it today: "These are some of the fattest doctors I've ever drawn."

432 407 143 If you get the chance to read or buy the complete Far Side collection, it's fantastic.

Posted by: JoeF. at September 15, 2020 10:43 AM (HrMC1)

434 According to an early review for the book, titled Troubled Blood, the storyline centers around a cisgender male serial killer who dresses up like a woman to murder his female victims. Activists, reviewers and people in the transgender community are pointing out that the book has an anti-trans plotline that could be harmful to the community.

That's fantastic. Also, aren't these activists effectively claiming that all trannies are serial killers then?

See, this is why I think this country DOES need a revolution. We have way too many politicians who are way too comfortable in their seats-for-life, or in their leapfrogging from one office to another, like it's a career.

They should all be living in fear that we'll either figuratively or literally string them up if they don't do their damn jobs. But none of them ever fear the voter. They know the system is rigged, and not enough people are paying attention, or they don't care if these people do even the BASIC requirements of their jobs.

Too bad we have these larping commie-fascists in the streets right now, because all they are is a distraction from the real revolution that is so overdue.

The whole damn lot of them always were insufferable other than poor, neglected April, then Lynn Johnson got all SJW, then the strip wrapped up with the worst finale in the history of things when Elizabeth the Golden Vagina home-wrecked Blandthony's marriage in order to marry him herself and everyone in the strip acted like this was The Best Thing Ever, while readers reacted in horror and disgust.

Ugh, that strip got bad toward the end! It also coincided with Johnson's husband leaving her to run off with his longtime secretary. I think he just couldn't face the prospect of life with her once she retired and was home full time. There was just one bright spot in that final year: Grandpa was sinking into dementia and eventually died, but for a few days he was reliving his WWII experiences, and the strips were pretty well-done scenes of combat, all in a sepia tone. That was nice. We got to see him as a vital young man doing heroic things, not just an elderly husk lying in bed.

The inspector general's investigation, which was first reported by NBC News, comes after Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Zelinsky testified before Congress in June that a DOJ decision to recommend a lighter sentence than originally suggested was politically motivated. Zelinsky, a member of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team, resigned from the Stone case after being overruled by DOJ superiors.

477 My own recollection of Jill Stein's partial recount in MI in 2016 differs from the conventional wisdom here, i.e., that Stein's partial recount uncovered massive fraud/discrepancies.

I checked my recollection online briefly, just now. Stein turned up a net new +135 votes for HRC in MI. Trump's campaign successfully sued to shut Stein's MI recount down.

Stein's recount did show that some Detroit precincts hadn't maintained their paper ballots properly, so no recount was possible in those precincts, but that seems to me like garden variety inner city incompetence.

Recounts in other states in 2016, such as NV, turned up absolutely nothing of significance. About 9 extra votes for HRC & 6 more for Trump.

If I'm wrong about what Stein's recount uncovered, please correct me.

509 Still have the Snoopy vs. Red Baron LP around here somewhere. The Royal Guardsmen. Where are they now?
Posted by: klaftern

More than you ever wanted to know.

https://bit.ly/3iBH9IA

Originally known as the Posmen, the Ocala, Florida-based sextet adopted their anglophile moniker during the British Invasion, led by The Beatles and other British artists.

The Royal Guardsmen made a comeback in December 2006, when they released a new Snoopy song, "Snoopy vs. Osama", which became a hit on The Dr. Demento Show.

Rick Cosner has been the alternate drummer since 2006, substituting for John Burdett as needed.

The current band performs regularly around the United States.

For what it's worth, and I'm sure people have wondered...
The German words at the beginning are:
Achtung! Jetzt wir singen zusammen die Geschichte
Uber den schwartzkopfigin
Hund Und den lieben Red Baron

The direct translation is:

Attention Now we sing together the history
About the black-headed dog
And our dear Red baron

It sounds like a one liner, but it is exactly true. The entire issue of campaign finance issue is intentionally corrupt that it beggars description.

The only way to even roughly understand it is to accept that current Campaign Finance Law is set up to make it very illegal for an average person with no special knowledge to try and run a campaign against the status quo. However, if you have enough money to hire a host of campaign specialist lawyers and money managers, who will daisy chain your contributions through a series of 501c4 organizations and the like, then it becomes ridiculously easy for a wealthy person, or organization, to give as much money as they like to anyone.

The law is intentionally written this way.

555 The law is intentionally written this way.

I made a comment to the now Lt Governor that is running for Governor that I would love to contribute to his campaign, but it requires that I list my place of employment and I am afraid of retribution. The only thing he could say was that he couldn't circumvent the law and ask me to vote for him. Nothing else he could have said, really, but I wonder how much this matters for campaign contributions.

556 Google Translate claims the "Hav in mansken" is "Sea in man's glow". Ummm...

That seems, dumb.

"Mansken" should have a circle above the "a" to give it a long O sound (but someone didn't have that feature turned on). "Sea in moonlight."
