40 Just as I was about to comment on the MR that I was in before Art, Art shows up.

How am I s'posed to angle the image to see the stretched-out skull? Print it out first? Put it in my paint program and play with it?

Is putting that silly thing on this painting just "because I can"? Detracts rather badly from studying the rest of the image, as if it had been vandalized. (Or maybe that's the idea?)

My 2¢ worth, not including tax.

68 I enjoy Hans Holbein the Younger portraits. The skin tones are vibrant and appear real and the expressions are lively. There is nothing of the stiff look in other artists' portraits. I also like the detail in the background objects which lends a greater realistic impression for the viewer. The portraits are very effective.

No, it can be viewed correctly at an angle. In this case from the upper right or the lower left. But you have to stand way off to the side of the painting to see it, and that doesn't work with a photo of the painting.

109 Look at some examples of Hans Holbein the Younger works on his Wiki page. There are some pen and ink drawings that are extraordinary. One is for a chimney piece that would be considered excellent if done with modern materials and drafting tools. Holbein achieved his results with primitive tools.

It is interesting enough, I should look up what materials he had to work with. The history of the process would be fascinating.

Posted by: CN at September 17, 2020 09:49 AM (ONvIw)

116 Holbein painted one of the first "Glamour Shots" (Anne of Cleves, who became Henry VIII's fourth wife). Henry was angry at being matched with someone he found did not resemble the painting, and some people lost their heads over it. Holbein was lucky enough to die of the plague before the prosecutor could knock on his door.

117 This one is a favorite of art history teachers cuz it's chock full of symbolism. The distorted image on the bottom is a skull. There are two theories on why it's there. They both could be right. One says that this work is a vanitas and the image is a memento mori, a reminder that no matter how high you rise, you will die and you can't take it with you. It's distorted cuz it draws you in to the work and makes you think about it. Everyone should really think hard about life and death.

The other theory is that it is a play on Holbien's name.

Hans Holbein was the court painter for Henry VIII. These guys are ambassadors to the English court.

Why did they go with "the Younger" or "the Elder" in ancient times?

If Hans Holbein the Younger had to differentiate from his father so bad, why haven't we heard about his father?

Same with Pliney the Elder. Was his kid such a huge fuck up that he had to differentiate himself with a title? Why haven't we heard about Pliney the Younger?

201 In the enjoyable Charles Laughton movie, "The Private Lie of Henry VIII", Elsa Lanchester portrays Anne of Cleves. This film portrays Anne as perhaps not the most beautiful, but definitely the most intelligent, as she escapes Henry not only with her life, but with a pile of his loot besides.

This was probably not the most historically accurate portrayal, but Charles Laughton' version is absolutely the most memorable and enjoyable Henry VIII to appear in film. If you visualize Henry chomping on a big turkey leg, that's from this one.

==========

I fully buy their explanation. Based on what I've read of the plot synopsis, the character's final move away from the hyper-sexualized world is there and intentional.

The problem is that they chose to cast 11 year olds and then have them do the sexualized acts on camera. They didn't choose to imply the actions but to make them explicit.

It's like killing a puppy for real in a movie about how killing puppies is bad (stolen from the Bee).

267 In case you missed this gem in the previous thread, Barnes and Noble is absolutely giddy over the coming release of Barry's new book:

A Promised Land

Barack Obama

President Barack Obama has
a story to tell and what a story it is! A writer of genius, his new
post-White House memoir, "A Promised Land," is THE publishing event of
the year. If you haven't already, you must read his earlier inspirational
autobiographies, "Dreams from My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope," to
prepare for the upcoming November 17th release date. (This is also the
perfect time to re-read Michelle Obama's "Becoming.")...blah blah blah
etc.

Volume 1 of his memoirs will be released after the presidential election in November.

Former President Barack Obama has penned a new book that's due out this fall.

Obama made the book announcement on Twitter on Thursday morning. The book is titled "A Promised Land - The Presidential Memoirs, Vol. 1" and has a Nov. 17 release date, two weeks after election day.

"There's no feeling like finishing a book, and I'm proud of this one," Obama's tweet read. "

It's always all about him.

Not only am I shepherding a 16 year old daughter thru this nastiness, I'm divorced and her mother let her start dating at 14. Every day is a struggle. I must have done something in my past that I am paying dearly for. Have NO idea what it is but holy hell am I paying.

336 Biden doesn't care if it sticks or not, the idea is to flood the zone with nonsense, so the average LIV schmuck tunes out to any kind of sexual allegations all together.

Listen to this poster. This is the answer. Classic playbook being ran right here.

The typical Republican squish would run from it. That is the losing play. The winning play is jump right in the middle, make it stick to Biden while proving your own innocence.

That way - some will throw up their hands and tune it all out. Others, however, will get the message. Net win for Trump.

They still don't get it. The old playbook don't work on The Donald. Amazing that they still don't see that after four years.

Here's the thing: camera shots/angles are not random things. This is not a live performance. They chose sexually explicit camera angles, and chose to sexualize the girls. For pedophiles.

I imagine the crew was very heavily female, so there may not have been the consenting voice willing to speak up saying, "You know...this is not a great idea."

And, it's probably done winning awards.

Oh, yes, it has already won awards. At film festivals before Netflix bought it. I'm sure the awards were one of the primary reasons Netflix bid for the movie in the first place.

It is a longstanding Hollywood tradition to put a lot of sex on screen under the pretext of condemning the debauchery depicted, i.e., "Sodom & Gomorrah"; "Samson and Delilah"; lots of others-- altho the sex in question was VERY tame by modern standards.

Anyway, "Cuties" fits perfectly in that time-honored tradition. Hollywood once called this "combining the low road and the high road," I think.

I once took some classes taught by a professor who would every so often not hold class because "I am working on my book". Here's the thing: as I found out later, it wasn't that he was writing it, or researching for one.

No, no. He was instructed to edit the thing. As the published told him, few people are interesting in plowing through a 1500-2000 page book. Either cut some out or organize it into volumes.

There is a limit to book size that people are willing to buy.

Many pages will be given over to how He healed people, and how no on died in the United States from 20 January 2009 to 20 January 2017, because of Him and His HOT, BEAUTIFUL SMILE.

439 So The Hill has an article saying the debates will trouble for....wait for it...Trump. The premise is that Presidents are wrapped in a bubble of "Yes men" not willing to critique or challenge him enough and sighted his performance of the townhall he did with little George.

They referenced Obama first debate with Romney.

I think what they fail to realize is:

1. Trump faces viscous reporters every time he does a press conference.

2. He's done more press conferences and taken more questions then any other previous President in my life time.

3. Obama was not only in a bubble but had a fawning press blowing kisses on a daily basis.

4. George's townhall is a warning to Trump. The debates are going to be two against one. The moderators are going to run interference for Biden and "fact check" Trump every time he makes a statement.

No other President since Reagan has willingly walked in and sat down with the "enemy" and agreed to do multiple interviews.

But.... having to entertain clients.... some invariably want to go clubbin. I hated it. So did Mrs Fixer.

Not because I was in proximity to semi naked females.... but because she would always find glitter stuck in her dryer.

Wouldn't this be a good time for Jeff Sessions to come out and expose Biden? He grabbed his granddaughter away from the hands of Biden really fast.

Might help make a pinch of amends for what he did.

539 "How could Obama fill twice that on his pointless, vain, venal life?"
Posted by Mannix

Obama's life is the application of Bill Ayers' principles, which are largely Saul Alinksy's "There is Only the Fight" and other such works in subversion.

A parallel True Story of Obama, that would highlight each phase of his history (including stains on his shorts guy, Frank Marshall Davis) would be an interesting "profiles in courageous communism" story. Story is his Mom's (likely) involvement in CIA front groups, back in the day... then Rev. Wright, Ayers, Axelrod, Jarrett, right up to commie Brennan. Barry Soetoro himself was apparently involved in one of many CIA front groups (Business International Corporation BIC).

To get to the real story of Barrack Hussein and the CIA/Communist chain of events ... yeah, that would be longer than War and Peace. It is not the story of peace through strength ... it is more a story of Deep State control of government via their puppets and influence machinery (EDKH).

Truer than you know. Years ago we played in a venue that shared a huge parking lot with a go-go bar. It was a multi band night, I think 2 other bands. Anyway, the sound dude is going around asking where this one band was because their show time was coming and needed some info. I hear somebody say they were at the go-go bar. I looked at the dude and said no shit, a room here full of tits and ass and they went window shopping?? lol

I think that is the play, here. Biden doesn't care if it sticks or not, the idea is to flood the zone with nonsense, so the average LIV schmuck tunes out to any kind of sexual allegations all together.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 17, 2020 10:14 AM

Yep, that and to throw a bunch of annoying shit at Trump and his team that they have to spend time responding to it. It's a tactic to distract focus from both him and his team.

Imagine your regular job and the normal stresses and necessary work to get the job done on time. Now imagine having everyone in your office bother you with stupid, mundane shit every hour of every day until the deadline. Things that you have to take time away from your focus on your actual job to respond to so they stop bothering you with the shit.

That's the Left's/Democrats'/Deep State's tactic here for the rest of the campaign.

561 Holbein's painting of the ambassadors is hanging in the National Gallery in London. I saw it, when I was in London in 1976. At the time, it was hung high on the wall, so you had to look up at it; from that angle, the object in the foreground is unmistakably a skull.

Around that time, Holbein made a book of woodcuts entitled "The Dance of Death". Each woodcut showed the figure of Death seizing somebody (a priest, a Hausfrau, a peasant, a merchant, etc.), accompanied by a little poem on how the Reaper shows up when least expected. So the "skull" image clearly meant a lot to him.
