Stand your ground. Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war let it begin here!
-- John Parker
It is the nature of extreme self-lovers, as they will set a house on fire, and it were but to roast their eggs.
-- Francis Bacon
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
to say that for destruction ice
is also great
and would suffice.
-- Robert Frost
The minister gave out his text and droned along monotonously through an argument that was so prosy that many a head by and by began to nod, and yet it was an argument that dealt in limitless fire and brimstone and thinned the predestined elect down to a company so small as to be hardly worth the saving.
-- Samuel Langhorne Clemens
The wise and moral man
Shines like a fire on a hilltop,
Making money like the bee,
Who does not hurt the flower.
-- The Pali Canon

Do we want our journalists to be brave? No. We want them to tell the truth, and let the facts lead them where they may. But we have neither heroes nor honest men, and that is a sad commentary on the media.

Charlie Hebdo's Courage: Such a stark contrast with American journalistic cowardice.

[...]Fourteen of the alleged accomplices in the Charlie Hebdo attack and the attack on the grocery store went on trial last Wednesday. They are accused of providing weapons and logistic support to the terrorists.

And last Tuesday, the day before the trial began, Charlie Hebdo did an extraordinary thing: it published the Mohammed cartoons again, saying they were evidence in the trial. An editorial accompanying the republication said that failing to republish the cartoons would have been an act of “journalistic or political cowardice.” Just so.

Say what you want about their politics, but that requires intestinal fortitude.

I don't care whether our politicians and celebrities were heroes, since most people who serve, serve honorably and never come near battle, but do their duty anyway. It is of great value, and it is fast disappearing.

Here's an interesting article on "According To Hoyt," and the premise is a great one. The Great Remasking by HerbN
I’m not talking about the physical masks we are all forced to wear to get the necessities of life, although that is part of it. I am not talking about the Left letting their masks slip and show their actual view of us and their intentions, especially since we got uppity and elected Trump. I’m talking about the mask lain over all of us in the pre-Internet era.
And a bit more, but read the whole thing...it's worth it.
The Great Remasking isn't about physical masks, although it only works by making a physical mask a requirement to buy necessities. The Great Remasking is about taking away our ability to see we are not alone in our questioning the Narrative. It is about restoring the power to the media and the Left to tell us "this is the Truth and you contradict it at your peril".

What is it about the blues that is so appealing? I'm no music scholar or theorist, but there has to be something special that attracts our ears.

Maybe because it sounds like anyone can do it? But when we listen just a bit longer...nope!

25 years ago I was hiking on Mt. Bierstadt on a Sunday when it was 90+ in Denver. The next day it snowed. I've come to wonder if that was an illusion. Good to know it was not. Wish I was still there (for the weather, not the insane leftist politics).

29 "Look at schools and colleges across the land, acting like insane medieval peasants burning witches, or Stone Age tribes rejecting modern medicine in favor of witch doctors. And tens of millions of parents, putting up with it - and often not knowing any better."

Every encounter nowadays feels like scenes from the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, when you discover this apparently normal person in front of you is in fact more alien than you imagined possible.

Bad poetry:

for fear of being
conservative when old.

Respectful tip of the hat to bluebell and Hrothgar.

I have an amusing picture in my mind when bluebell's kids find out their Mom's reputation on the blog as a stone-cold killer. Who can get correct behavior from us unwashed Morons, when she demurely asks for it.

151 Here's something to ponder. Using Colorado as an example, we have been hovering at less than 3% positive PCR test rates. We don't know for sure the population being tested, but it surely includes a lot of non-sick people. It probably does not exactly match a random sample of the general population, but...

...if it were to be reflection of the general population that would mean that more than 97% of the people you encounter at the store do not have detectable COVID virus or fragments in their respiratory tracts. 19 out of every 20 people you walk past do not have it. And for this we remain on mandatory masking in public orders, with every indication that Polis will extend it next week when the 30 days are up.

(In all likelihood the general population positivity rate would be even less than the currently tested population)

That's me anymore. I'll just set my stuff down and walk out, as I did when I was not-so-nicely (very rudely) told at a big wine and spirits emporium that I would be asked to leave if I pulled my mask down again. This after I deliberately went to a completely empty aisle and pulled the stupid ass thing down for a couple seconds to gasp for air. Little Mr. N*zi Pig was watching me on camera and just had to scurry over to rudely reprimand me. What he did was permanently lose a longtime customer. I set my 150.00 wine and liquor purchases down in front of him, told him I was leaving forever, and went straight to another place to make my purchases.

Place I won't go to anymore is a mom and pop that is a ghost town anymore (wasn't hard to find an empty aisle.) The N*zi Pig is the mom-n-pop's son. Don't want my business, won't get my business.

196 Back home again from Dad's. Good to see Smash and Junior-ette again wven if it was just a long weekend.

Dad literally o ,y had brances down and he had already liled them up for running through his chipper/shredder.

Everywhere outside of Franklin Parish i went, big honking trees down, crops ruined, and buildings/roofs damaged.

Corn crops in particular in LA are decimated. The stalks were dry and the ears were ripe ready for harvest. Wind blew everything flat and the rain wet os down where it lay rotting because the fields were impassable. Lot of families futures ruined there.

Hope all y'all Morons & Ettes behind wnemy lines are safe from the wildfires in the West.

My dash cam recorded a crop duster worki g as i passed through Delhi, LA this morning. If it turns out decent, i'll post it and send everyone a link tomorrow or Wednesday, whenever i get off my ass and download the video.

Peace out, yo.

Speaking of these downtown office leases that are being unloaded....

Does anyone think this is permanent? I don't. Working at home has proven doable in the technical sense, but it's not natural. People are going to get this brilliant idea at some point that face-to-face communication is more effective and better for team-building. There may be a way to facilitate it, they'll discover -- such as renting a central place for it. You could also add separate work spaces for those who actually find it *more productive to work in a kid-free, temptation-free environment that has the bonus value of getting them out of the house for a change.

It's coming back, I'm sure. Office life is a human thang.

Mamas & the Papas were a great group IMHO... but like almost all great groups they had some hang-ups. One of them was their insistence on doing lots of Motown covers on their albums, even though they had zero talent for the genre.

Another folk-ish artist of the time, Johnny Rivers, did Motown covers, but he'd usually put some sort of spin on them, often a country-style spin. Mamas & Papas OTOH would just pound through the song without any thought or finesse and figured, hey it's Motown, it's GOTTA sound great! Wrong.

Unfortunately - the Phillips were heavy drug addicts and Moma Cass - who could really sing, unlike the rest, was also morbidly obese and had an addition to drugs as well - this ensured that the band, no matter how talented - was mort from the start - a real shame. But not unusual for the 60's.

323 So... the two tiny kittens we somehow ended up with on Saturday?
(story on Sat ONT)
http://acecomments.mu.nu/?blog=86&post=389938#c33447266

Milady and I went down to Mom's Sunday for an overnight, and daughter and SiL took in the kittens for the night.

We expected them to bring the kittens back to us today.

Instead, they volunteered to keep them another night! I was concerned because they have an old cat and two very active dogs.

Daughter sent pix of SiL holding a kitty and one of the dogs with a gentle paw on SiL's elbow, sniffing the kitten. Precious. And that's not a word I frequently use.

Then she sent a pic of SiL experiencing (as daugher put it) his first kitten-induced nap. With two snoozing kittens on his arm.

Will try to get pix of the kits to the pet thread.

MIS HUM, if you're around, or anyone who might know: Is there a preferred width for pix? Presumably you don't want the three-zillion-pixel-wide originals.

348 Boswell, also true. What's interesting is that I think Cass could have survived, if she really tried. She had already crossed over into the mainstream in a major way, and at one point was even a regular actress/singer on the Carol Burnett Show!!

Yes - indeed. She had a persona that played well to regular audiences unlike the Phillips who were too hippy dippy for main stream - Mama Cass was a guest on many regular main stream shows like Laugh-In and Sonny and Cher - she could have made it without the baggage - but unfortunately she also had a cocaine addiction.

403 One of the very last, perhaps *the* very last of the great 60s Girl Group singles had an unusual pedigree. It wasn't even recorded by "that kind" of Girl Group. The idiosyncratically-named The Cake, NY City singers Jeanette Jacobs, Barbara Morillo and Eleanor Barooshian, specialized in intricate, Madrigal-style vocals and an occasional rearranged Motown cover.

Their great single "Baby, That's Me" was a hastily-recorded midnight demo session recorded for the gig money, for Jack Nitzsche acolyte Harold Battiste, and intended to be shopped to a "real" girl group back in LA. But with the Girl Group era waning there wasn't much interest, and the single, replete with Spectorian Wall-of-Sound production, was released as is although The Cake themselves weren't crazy about being associated with a sound that bore no resemblance to their usual. The middle-of the-night ambience just worked with the song's aching melodramatic melancholy and gives the Jackie DeShannon-penned song a special magic.

Came back with the screwdriver, pilot opens engine compartment, and messes with the choke on one carb of the Rotax engine. Satisfied, he hands me back the screwdriver, fires up the engine, rolls about 200 feet down the road, and off into the wild blue yonder.

439 I started watching the 2019 film "2017" earlier. Paused to check-in here, and may not watch the rest of the film. Because...Warning Spoilers Below.

The premise, a major British Army WW1 line combat unit totally out of communication with friendly units, both on its flanks and to the rear area, is impossible BS. I won't insult the intelligence of The Horde by listing even a half-dozen reasons it's total BS.

Two corporals, only, are sent? No officer, to help make the written "do not attack" order more believable? Also, no other teams of runners are sent to help ensure delivery of a critical order to be delivered through territory not occupied by British troops?

The two corporals would have been blown to bits in the first empty German trench line, by mines or booby traps emplaced by the evacuating Germans.

No rust on any metal items.

Oh, well, going to bed now. I think I'll watch 1917 to the end tomorrow, to at least discover how many more improbable events the writer put in.

492 of other cute things, my toothless calico caught a mouse in the back yard in the 90F heat and played with it until she was exhausted, and then my little black cat took over and played it to death.

The calico was so tired and overheated she flopped into the shade and was panting, which worried me a bit, but she perked up and was fine later. She was just tuckered I think.

I would feel more than a pang of concern for the mouse, but I don't. You can root for the predator or the prey, and I have cats and they hunt vermin.

502 Facts. Feh.

The only approach in our media is simple... All of them are lying and obfuscating. All of them are lying and obfuscating to advance the aims of the Democrat Party. This includes putative "conservative" media. If they're opening their mouths, they're lying. If they close them, they're lying.

When you hear them say or not say something about something that happened, ask yourself the following: "how does this lie, by commission or omission, serve the interests of Democrat Party? What truth are they hiding?"

When viewing events through the lens of American media, this chain of reasoning produces the closest thing to a "fact" you'll find. It's actually pretty consistent, as long as you remember that all of them are playing the Opposite Game, 100% of the time.

As a Service, the Marines have the highest percentage of dirt-eaters vs. desk surfers in the .mil

That's because every Marine is a Rifleman, and even their Close Air Support Pilots have to serve in (at least train with) Marine Combat Platoons, the better to learn how to integrate from above.

Very close second is the Navy, where many have gone to sea, even if only for a single voyage or crossing. Rank be damned, every soul on a ship is a Sailor.

The worst is the USAF. I was in the USAF. Only 2%ish is on any kind of Flight Status. Not just pilots, but loadmasters, med-evac, etc.

On the Air Force Seal, the motto is: "To Fly and to Fight". They never show you the back side of that emblem, where it says: "If you don't Fly, you Ain't Shit".

But everyone on a base with an active flight line knows that to be true.

Granted. With good leadership, training and motivation, even the support troops KNOW their value to the mission. I'm not taking that away.

But just watch who gets pushed ahead in line at the dispensary, regardless of how bad you're near-dying from that flu, while the E-7 aerial refueling pump-jockey strolls in for a troublesome hangnail.

The military is at it's No Bullshit Best, when the wars are hot and the bullets are flying. Warrior Culture.

TOO long at peace is why we have SJW as Flag Rank Offices at the five sided puzzle palace, and etc.

I sure as hell don't want war. But damn hell if I want the Peacebound Charriors to run the thing, either.

You got a solution? I'm listening!

I thought (considering Blacks have been voting <10% Repub for years) that we'd have to shoot up to some impossible figure like 60% of their vote. Heard it was like 15% Black vote to finish the Democrats and I wanted to scream. AND WE'RE NOT TRYING HARDER TO GET THEIR VOTE??? It also put the big immigration push into perspective. Black voters need to be overwhelmed numerically in case they forget their place.

I'll never forget his first day in office the held a big ceremony and the press fawned over him while he signed something that was going to close Gitmo. Now, I don't care if Gitmo is open for nine hundred years if one of the jihadis decides do a Methuselah impersonation. The point is, what a fookin' liar that guy was.

We would talk for hours, or type for volumes.

I've been politely estranged from "church" for maintaining what the Word actually said, and similarly, squeezed out of Republican (conventional) politics in the '80s, for daring to treat the Constitution in the same light.

Time goes on, and I find a re-attachment to my faith, even though my theology not only hasn't changed, but has intensified.

And has reinforced my Patriotism, in the doing.

The PROBLEM is. Me, ever attempting to live up to my Theology.

I can do it on the Political Spectrum. But I'll never be Christ Like. And I admit it.

called heroes, while those of us who did the damn job, and won the wars,
are forgotten.

Posted by: Romeo13

Getting shot has nothing to do with being smart. That is not how any of this works. I don't know your situation Romeo13 but that line doesn't sit well with me. They honor those killed in action on Memorial Day. Many use it to honor all who served in combat, and that is a good thing since it is never a bad time to honor them. But Memorial Day has a very specific meaning. It is for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans Day is there to honor those who served. Even many who did serve are not called veterans by the government. But there is a day that specifically honors the living vets. I think this country does do a pretty good job of honoring veterans or at least they did. Now the place is so distracted by radical politics and grievances that they probably do the job less well writ large.

But the idea that those who got shot didn't do a good enough job makes no sense and conservatives should drop it as the worst idea ever and should never mention it again.

People should learn about the 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg. They were sacrificed so that the line could hold and others would live. There are countless other examples. Often the most brave or daring were the ones who went down. But how did we get here? Some make it and some don't I have never heard a combat vet not say those that passed were the real heroes. That doesn't make it true but that is how they feel.

Paperwork, ensused.

Then again, wearing the badge of a City Police Force.

And a third time, disarming my felonious brother after he had stolen a .38 from my household.

That was 1986.

He has again now intruded into my life. My late Dad and Step Mom left *all* to me.

And yes, I knew it would be piss some people off.

My family has served this Nation since its inception.

Are we HEROES? Well, no, never wanted to be.

But we have a weird mindset right now in the US, where VICTIMS are celebrated as heroes.

Whether POW's (who are victims), or those killed in combat, or those wounded in combat, or those raped, or those murdered, or those who happen to be idiots and commit suicide by cop...

Victims should be supported out of pity, they should not be celebrated as heroes.

657 Question. How do you get middle class and wealthy voters to hold their nose and vote for donald trump when they don't want too? Most middle class and wealthy have most of their wealth coming from their house. Trump should fear monger home owners that leftist democrats want to get rid of the suburbs and force people to live in apartments and plan to do it thru zoning, wealth tax and increasing property taxes on single family homes. This should scare enough home owners to push trump across the finish line.

i didn't try to silence anyone. I was trying to understand what you were saying and I was pretty fair about it. If this is about McCain or the Left calling wounded soldiers victims, then that context would have helped. If you said it, I am sorry I missed it. I only responded to the text I saw.

I think all combat veterans are heroes because they stood in the line of fire. I respect all service whether you were in combat or not. Soldiers don't get to choose when they get sent to war. But yeah, the line about not being smart enough to not get shot is a bad take as a general idea. The main issue is it is wrong.

664 nteresting, I thought I prefaced that comment pretty well.

And yes, I knew it would be piss some people off.

My family has served this Nation since its inception.

Are we HEROES? Well, no, never wanted to be.

But we have a weird mindset right now in the US, where VICTIMS are celebrated as heroes.

Whether POW's (who are victims), or those killed in combat, or those
wounded in combat, or those raped, or those murdered, or those who
happen to be idiots and commit suicide by cop...

Victims should be supported out of pity, they should not be celebrated as heroes.

Yet who do we see on the commercials to support Veterans? Oh, wounded, not heroes.

The sainthood is funny as they trashed him when he was a threat to their power. They like W now to because they can use him to attack Trump. The Left is smart that way. They only care about power and have no issues using anyone to get it.

Hitting balls at the driving range.

He outlasted his opponents on Monday, to win by 3 strokes and earn a $15 million payday. And retained his #1 ranking in the world. A few years before, he was considering giving up on pro golfing.

714 Loved Sarah Hoyt's The Great Remasking.

Since late March I've been doing Instacart and Door Dash. I wear a mask when grocery shopping and I wear a gaiter which I pull up when I'm picking up the restaurant food. Most of the deliveries for both Instacart and Door Dash have been contactless, but I generally pull up the gaiter when dropping off the food because I don't need a mask Karen to rate me down because I wasn't wearing a mask. Lately there have been more 'hand it to me' deliveries, but even with these, unless I'm delivering to someone at work, most people still want me to set the food down and won't open the door until I've stepped back. So with the vast majority of deliveries there is no scientific reason to wear a mask. I'm simply not in contact with the customer long enough for covid transmission to occur.

Recently both Instacart and Door Dash have a new policy that we must wear masks, even when doing a contactless delivery, in case we encounter the customer. So as the coronavirus is becoming less of a concern, both companies have gone to a stricter mask policy. It's nuts.

Occasionally as I'm dropping off groceries the customer will come to the door, see that I'm wearing a mask, then quickly puffin a mask before opening the door to bring in the groceries. It's so stupid and so sad. I want to tell these people that they don't need to wear a mask on my account. And I hate that I've just reinforced that we should all be wearing masks all the time.

When does it end? When do we rise up against the forced compliance? When will enough be enough?

Most have no idea what a PGA Tour player goes through. They see the telivised rounds and assume the guys play four days a week. Far from it, they travel a day or so but they hit balls and practice at least 5 days a week.

On the average day, they walk 5 miles at the least. And that is almost every day. The average course is at least 4 miles but that is only if you hit is straight. And that doesn't include any practice, warmup, or anything.

It is the norm for these guys to practice after their rounds. They will warm up before a round and that usually is an hour. But the real practice comes after the round. My guess is the average guy would collapse after doing this for a week or two. On the Tour, they do it 30 weeks or more a year.
DJ is a phenomenon really. There are others who are really good so there will always be a tight competition. But There is something about DJ. He is a physical specimen unlike most other guys. He doesn't let thoughts take over and that is a real plus. I am from the Seve, Faldo, and Shark era so he is a bit boring. But the guy is an absurd talent. He is smart to work so hard because it is possibly a short window to make so much.

Sure golf normally has a much larger window than say the NFL. But you never know. The guy is right to take it so seriously. If he doesn't, the 20 guys behind him will.

if you haven't signed up for the MiMoMe yet, please do so today

The 2020 Michigan MoMe

Join us on Saturday September 19 in New Hudson, MI.

Conveniently scheduled between the Ozark & TX events, this will be a low-key, laid-back, high-speed, low-drag afternoon event. We're not promising lavish venues or cabrito or anything, but you're welcome to come even if you're from another state, and even if that state is Ohio.

Unfortunately, The pool is closed due to Obergruppenfuhrer Whitmer's edict, so the synchronized swimming event has been cancelled. Maybe next year...

The sign-up link (https://mimome.stoatnet.org) is in the sidebar on the front page and in my nick; there's also an e-mail link in the sidebar what will put you in touch with Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman.

If you've already signed up for the MIMoMe but didn't click the link in the email to confirm it, please do. Otherwise, we have a hard time knowing if your email address is right and that updates won't get lost. Thank you for helping us help you help us all.

732 Time for work preps.

Read the entire thread.

We are what America needs. Well, not me, especially.

But here is a diversity of opinions that light up the surroundings with Individualism. The Horde is a gift, and kept my sanity during the dark pbho days. Here is the Age of Reason, one grey box at a time. And snark.

We got this. May you all be blessed.

Actually, Law of Intended Consequences.

Lefties ruin everything they touch, blaming others for their deliberate failures. Chaos is their method and power is their goal.

In a word, yes.

But, of course, they can not be called racist when they are racist. It's against the rules they made up for themselves.

743 Saw a stupid sticker yesterday.

"Make Racism illegal again"

Got me to thinking.

What is the real definition of racism?

And I believe that racism is thought, not an action.

There may indeed be action borne forth by the thoughts of racism. But racism itself is a thought.

Can we...did we ever make wrong-thought illegal?

So maybe the FISA was created to allow illegal searches.

It seems biblical. Yesterday was as hot as I can ever recall in the SF area, the air is full of smoke, people are wandering around aimlessly in their nearly useless masks and the lights flicker on and off. Meanwhile PGE dissembles at length about which power shutdowns are due to wind concerns versus power availability.

Jemele Hill

Ive been blocked by both James Woods and Travis Tritt. Had anyone asked me about Travis Tritt before today I would have said he was a nice guy based off meeting him at the Kentucky Derby a few years ago.

Now Im going to re-tell that story and make him seem like a huge asshole.

758 ...Sure golf normally has a much larger window than say the NFL. But you never know. The guy is right to take it so seriously. If he doesn't, the 20 guys behind him will.

That was a very thoughtful complimentary counter-punch to my post. All very true.

Dustin, iianm, started out as a long drive competition winner. A guy who could drive the ball 450 yards.

Playing pro level golf requires a lot more than that. Dustin learned the 'rest of the story'. Jack Nicklaus was the big distance dog of his era. John Daly won his major with a massive distance advantage.

But to be a great one, you need a lot more.
