I remember when clove cigarettes were big in the 80s. I thought they were 100 percent clove and I bet many did. They are mostly tobacco with some clove sprinkled in. Of course they are banned in the USA now because of course they are.

Yes, through out the whole movie that was always in the background, grinding Michael down. It was even affecting his health. GIII isn't a terrible movie, just uneven. Plus it's unfairly compared to GI and GII, which were cinematic masterpieces.

I was DJ'ing the night Gene Loves Jezebel played on campus, a few hundred feet away. I was told to let them in if they wanted, but no one else. Apparently the show was so good that the crowd practically chased the band into the station and I barred the door just ahead of it. (The station had a very thick, wood plank for that purpose.) Thankfully that was not the night I tried acid and shrooms for the first time.

I rewatched some of his shows recently. They seem to hold up pretty well.
He's got a terrific delivery. So it's not always necessary for the jokes to carry the show. There's even one where he talks about doing the show in french, then starts doing it, and it's still damn funny, even if you can't understand the words!

My problem is that i would bounce from one to the other. I do the same with other interests and i guess that makes me well rounded. But modern society is not all the supportive of the well rounded individual. Comparative advantage is what is mostly rewarded.
Anyway, I probably know a few hundred words in more than a couple languages. I took this stuff in college but I doubt I have met many who can truly speak another language well unless they have a good reason. There is usually a specific reason such as living abroad a long time or living around foreign language speakers here as far as I have seen. It is one think to study some verbs and read some literature, but another to speak a foreign language with ease.
it works both ways though. We had many native Spanish speakers who took Spanish in school and were not much better than the others. There are many illiterate people but pretty much everyone can speak their native tongue.

Generally speaking, I prefer EdP, or best of all, pure parfum.
I like very rich, deep perfumes best. I could do without top notes altogether, I think. EdP and extraits are usually much richer because of less alcohol, so that's probably why I prefer them?
I would argue men could wear most extraits and I think it sucks that they don't get sold in men's fragrances.
And of course I hate the gender labels anyway.

Same with Russian class. With a very few exceptions, Russian-Americans thought the class would be an easy A, and discovered that:
1) They came over here when they were seven, and although they could speak kitchen Russian, they couldn't read or write Russian very well.
2) There are enough Russians in Portland that a English-Russian patois has developed, with a lot of English grammatical structures, so they didn't even have Russian grammar nailed down very well.

If we look back on it, we realize we didn't learn to speak English in school. You learn that at home and with your friends. You learn to write and read at school, but not to speak.
OF course there are exceptions. If you are really motivated, you can do it. I know people who took the courses offered by the state department and went whole hog. But there is usually a reason such as a job or assignment abroad. The only other thing I have seen is people who lived on the border and had to learn to speak with others just to get on with the business at hand.

I had a reason that I missed the thread about the WSP busting antifa. Damn, I have been on that very spot of freeway thousands of times.
Got a call from an old friend who works for UPS as a driver. Haven't talked to him in over a year. He's also the union steward for his depot. He is good with people, and also knows how to read the fine print, and also will not back down to anyone.
He has worked for them maybe 12 years, and has been suspended or fired at least 5 times. Every single time, the Union attorneys spank UPS and he gets his job back, with pay and extras. Mainly, because he knows the rules.
So he tells me the drivers are about at the end of their rope. UPS forces overtime, but after a lot of it, they are limited to 3 days of 9 and 1/2 hour days, per contract. Then they can ask you to drive, and there is more pay, but not supposed to force it if you say no.
They have been forcing them to work anyway, directly against the contract, since Covid started. And the packages are supposed to be limited to 70 pounds and certain dimension limits. Otherwise, the shipments are supposed to be a different department that handles the commercial large stuff, like pallets of boxes, etc.
Customers are throwing the business to the regular UPS depts, and UPS is accepting it.
With the Jay Inslee experience, people in the last few weeks are ordering desks and all kinds of stuff normally that a school would buy. It's exploded.
And the package counts are crazy. Same time, double the deliveries. Two years ago, an average package count would be 150 to 200 a day. Yesterday, my buddy had over 400 packages. And had worked over 60 hours a week for the last 4 or 5 months.
And because he told them to pound sand when they told him he was working this Saturday, even though that 3 day, 9.5 hour rule was clearly in effect.
After a half hour of talk, as he was delivering, he said he had to go because his phone was blowing up with texts and voicemails. The messages?
Seems that 8 drivers out of his depot had quit that morning, just walked out, because of the continued forced overtime and doubled deliveries.
Oh, and their truly asshole boss, (I met him once and that is exactly what he is) who has fired and suspended my friend, got back from a long vacation, and refuses to wear a mask inside.
Boss got formally reprimanded yesterday for not wearing the mask inside, like every other employee.
If you need a job that is hard but pays well, with outstanding benefits (Teamsters), UPS is hiring in Puget Sound now, with all the hours you can ever want.

My problem is that i would bounce from one to the other. I do the same with other interests and i guess that makes me well rounded. But modern society is not all the supportive of the well rounded individual. Comparative advantage is what is mostly rewarded.
Anyway, I probably know a few hundred words in more than a couple languages. I took this stuff in college but I doubt I have met many who can truly speak another language well unless they have a good reason. There is usually a specific reason such as living abroad a long time or living around foreign language speakers here as far as I have seen. It is one think to study some verbs and read some literature, but another to speak a foreign language with ease.

you have a way with words lol. But I get what you are saying. Comparative advantage has made many well off but unable to fend for themselves. I grew up in a mostly middle class area and what I have seen over the years is the guy that can actually fix things has become more and more valuable. I recall when my old neighborhood was all military or white collar. Today, you have many who fix things with their hands. The others have no clue and will pay a pretty penny to someone who can take care of their problems.
If I could advise anyone, it would be A) Join the military and not the infantry. And B) listen to Mike Rowe. Then if you really want to go to college, go with a purpose and goal at hand. College can be great, but go in with a specific goal and use it to your advantage. If you don't have a good reason to go, then don't.

Sure it is not healthy, but if someone has a serious task at hand, they can do amazing things. If you are just living a normal life, I doubt it is good for you. Anyhoo, I found the keys to learning German were: One, read kids' elementary school age comic books. You pretty much get the same language, although it's informal (du vs Sie) and it's dumbed down, but after awhile you really start to pick it up. The other thing is to listen to people talking (youtube, recordings, whatever) at a moderate rate. Don't try to understand any of it. Just listen to the flow of the sentences. After awhile, you'll start putting half the verb at the end of the sentence (where it sometimes belongs) automatically because it just sounds right.
Learning a foreign language as an adult is hard if you try to learn a foreign language as an adult. Try to learn it as a kid.

Eliminate Time Zones. We all live under UTC.
By accepting Daylight Savings, we already agree that we don't care to have noon be the zenith of the sun - and hour later is fine.
Instead of chopping up states where literally across the street is an hour earlier, or regions where some arbitrary county line or river twist determines the time, we all agree that UK gets to own the sun at zenith at noon.
Most people don't even know what the 'M' in AM and PM mean, so they won't miss it.
Lets say I have a conference meeting with someone in CapeTown South Africa, I have a consultant in Seattle and one in Israel. We rely on the smarts in our calendar to sort out the times so that we don't miss the meeting by several hours. Put the UTC Right There in the invite, so if you accidentally step over the time zone and forget to update your computer, you are still good to go. The US changes its Standard/Daylight times differently than UK. Afghanistan moves the clock an additional thirty minutes. Stop the madness. Stick to a UTC. If you live in the Eastern Time Zone, instead of waking up at 0600, wake up at 1100 YEAR ROUND. If you don't like that, then wake up at the crack of noon - but then don't bitch about less sunlight after dinner.
If you want to have sunlight after dinner, then get your ass up out of bed earlier and eat earlier - don't sit around with a hungry stomach waiting for six PM to roll around before firing up the kitchen. Its a tradition that doesn't make sense anymore because we work with people literally around the world.
With sportsball no longer a factor, and with on-demand streaming, who cares when a program comes on?
I'm not asking for something so hideous and evil as converting to the metric system - just that we look at time differently.

we had someone bring this up in our college Spanish class. It did not go over well with the teachers but I always remembered it and agree with it. They do a poor job of teaching foreign languages in school imo. The standard in college is four semesters. You learn two semesters or grammar and then two of literature appreciation, which basically destroys the grammar lessons you just learned.
i agree about comic books. But in my mind, the only true way to learn for most is to go abroad and get in a situation where you have to learn the language. When you need to hit the head in a foreign country, you will figure out pretty quickly how to ask about that.

Probably the single greatest practical skill I learned in the military was threat assessment/situational awareness.

Walter had missed a *lot* of votes in the Senate. This was, I think, one of the first times that attendance record was used against an incumbent, successfully.
Where's Walter? A bloodhound, sniffing through the woods, looking for Walter. Devastating.
I had senators explain to me how that ad/election result revolutionized things, and missing votes was suddenly a big no-no.
And sometimes the actions they'd take to not miss a vote, but also get away to something else, were hilarious. A Danforth/Helms thing was the best I saw up close.

But I believe that The Senile One will mentally freeze during the debates, making his condition obvious to even the most ardent supporters.

that is another issue with learning a language and deciding which language to pick. Will the language be valuable and will you time have been well spent? I can see why many go with Spanish though I think that has been over done. For the most part Spanish speakers will appreciate your efforts and speak with you. Some say the French are disdainful of foreigners that try to speak their language, but that has not been my experience.
If you study Swedish, be prepared for the fact that the Swedes likely speak English better then you will ever be able to speak their language. I have heard Mandarin Chinese can be a tough nut to crack but I can't really speak on that subject. Italians love someone who can speak their language but the issue with that is it is pretty much only spoken in one place.
I can throw a few words of Ethiopian Armaric and get a new friend just like that. There are many things to consider when you decide on a language. My only other piece of advice is to decide and then go for it. Don't let anyone put you off or try to influence you. The tired line that everyone has to study Spanish doesn't hold up. i love Spanish for many reasons, but it is bs that Americans can only choose that language because a neighboring country speaks that language. Well, guess what, Quebec is French speaking and is on our border too. More than once they almost became their own country.
If you just like to learn languages for fun and want to make someones day or have a cultural exchange. I would say go with something exotic. Even a few phrases can make someone glow with pride and make their day as well as yours.

I was infantry too and there was never a second place. You have to be who you are. But I know of many who got a world class education in the military and instead of paying for it, they got paid. I knew a guy who they taught to make dental implants. He became rich after serving as an enlisted man. I meat so many young people today who would never even consider the military. We went wrong some where down the line.

a great life skill. I hope I did not come off wrong as I was trying to give a hot take based on my life experiences. I love the infantry. My comment was about the world today that mostly only values very specific skills as in how much money you can make me today. Most of the people who make a ton today couldn't set up a hasty firing position or win at Trivial Pursuit.
I wold rather have kids learn a marketable skill in the service than go to one of these lefty brain washing centers. Of course 11B is best.
