Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Pelosi’s Coiffure – Recalling the 1990s House Bank and House Post Office Scandals [Buck Throckmorton]Americans have long been sick of the special privileges our elites have awarded themselves. During Covid, however, with our elite politicians excusing themselves from the draconian restrictions they impose on the rest of us, it feels like a major backlash is brewing. Queen Pelosi’s coiffure may be the last straw. It brings back memories of the House Bank and Post Office scandals from the 1990s - scandals that flushed out a generation of corrupt Democratic leaders, including the Speaker of The House. The House Of Representatives had created the “House Bank”, an institution to which they could deposit money. More importantly, it served as a cash dispenser from which they could write checks against accounts which had no cash on deposit. There were no penalties or consequences for an unlimited number of bounced checks, which effectively created an unlimited credit line to cover those bounced checks. From Congressional Quarterly:Revelations that hundreds of sitting and former House members for years had routinely overdrawn their House bank accounts without penalty shook the House throughout 1992. The scandal, which touched more members than any ethics controversy in congressional history, drove some members to retire and helped defeat others in primary or general elections. Of the 269 sitting members with overs, 77 — more than one in four — retired or were defeated in primary or general election bids for the House or other offices. That was a far higher casualty rate than other members suffered. Only 28 of 166 members (about one in six) with clean bank records had their political careers cut short. The Speaker Of The House tried to blame its own creation, the House Bank, for Congress’ lawless corruption. In an April 17 column he [Speaker of the House Thomas Foley] wrote for The New York Times: “The members named yesterday did not abuse their banking privileges. It would be more accurate to say that most members were abused by the bank.”The Ethics Committee Chairman was bouncing hundreds of checks, in an ethical manner no doubt. Among the surprises was the news that the ethics committee's chairman — Louis Stokes, D-Ohio — overdrew his account 551 times. Stokes, who became chairman of the ethics committee for the second time in 1991, had recused himself from the bank investigation after acknowledging that he had overdrawn his account “on occasions.” But he had given no hint of the magnitude of the problem. A leaked document showed that as many as 28 current members had $10,000-plus overs at some point. This was just in 1992. By 1994, Dan Rostenkowski, the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, was indicted for crimes associated with his privileged position as Chairman of the most powerful Congressional committee. Among them was obtaining at least $50,000 in cash from the House Post Office by disguising the transactions as stamp purchases. Other Congressmen were also laundering cash payments to themselves through the House Post Office. The indictment says Mr. Kolter illegally obtained more than $11,000 from 1985 through 1990 by disguising cash payments from the House post office as stamp purchases by his Congressional office.Voters had finally had enough of the Washington elite Democrats. In 1994 Republicans won 54 House seats, flipping the House to the GOP for the first time in four decades. Republicans also picked up 8 seats in the Senate that year. Among the casualties that year – Speaker of the House Thomas Foley. It’s starting to smell a lot like 1994. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

If this were the 94 electorate, the Dems would never have dared attempt that failed coup, or the ensuing successful coverup. Corruption just isn't a vote-mover anymore. It's all a power game, and everyone gets that, deep down. There are no rules for the DC crowd, just relative factional strength.

In 1994 Republicans won 54 House seats, flipping the House to the GOP for the first time in four decades. Republicans also picked up 8 seats in the Senate that year. Among the casualties that year - Speaker of the House Thomas Foley.
Posted by: Open Blogger at 03:40 PM I was 16 years old in 1992 and would not become politically aware until almost 10 years later, on 09/11/2001. And I have never researched this, so had no idea about it. That said, the emboldened part is exactly why the Democrats were doing it. They were in power for *four decades* with apparently no check and balance on their power. They had the media fully behind them and the GOP likely as spineless then as they are now. So they thought they were untouchable, would never be out of power and therefore could get away with anything. I hope you're right that this November will be another 1994. But I will believe it when I see it. Over the past 18+ years of following politics and seeing how the American electorate seems to default to supporting Democrats, I've become completely cynical. I thought for sure the American electorate would reject a radical like Obama in 2008. Then believed for certain that they would not re-elect him when they finally had a decent choice in a businessman in a time when the economy and jobs were a priority. I was devastated both times. And that was it for me any my naive optimism. When Trump won in 2016, I was ecstatic. Completely surprised that he won and even more surprised when he took Michigan. But after that came 2018 when Democrats were swept into office in Michigan. And there went any hope of me thinking optimistically for 2020. I will do my part to get people to the polls for Trump in November, but I'm preparing myself for the worst. At least here in Michigan. Taking the state by 10,700 votes, after a Republican not winning the state in almost 3 decades, that is not a very solid foundation. We'll see what happens in 8 weeks... The 1984 polls were pretty consistent with Reagan at around 52%. What wasn't unbiased was the media coverage. This was the era of Ted Kennedy flat out offering the Soviets help if they could find a way to help defeat Reagan. And the media gave him a pass on it. She split us into groups for the 3 different canidates. On corner were the Carter kids. Another corner were Anderson kids. She said all the people for Reagan go to that corner. When I got there I turned around and I was alone. All the kids laughed at me.
We were supposed to elect a campaign leader, create campaign posters, and perform at 3 debates before the vote. I told my Mom about it in the car when she picked me up. She said "Well, we are going to need somme poster boards!" My favorite line I said at one of the debates was "If Anderson can't take care of his teeth, how can he take care of the country?" As hard as it is to believe, I had some political awareness in 1984. Some. I was still in elementary school, and remember perfectly well the other boys and I sitting around perhaps on a day where we were stuck inside for recess because it was a rainy day in our part of Germany and we were going down the list of what we later would learn were "primary" candidates". And we soon figured out some guy named Mondale would run against Reagan.
I already liked Reagan because I knew even then he hated the Commies and for me at that age that was more than enough. I remember Mondale appearing on the Today show talking about the first thing he would do in office, foreign policy wise, would be to schedule a summit with the Soviets. In my young mind I sensed that he wanted to kiss their asses. Not having it. Especially after the road trip to Berlin that I took in the fall that year. I woke up early on the Wednesday after the election, meaning we in Germany were just seeing election coverage. It was here I found out Reagan won; the magnitude of the ass-kicking only hit me later when I plunged into politics further. When I turned 18 I almost immediately registered to vote. I tell people that I was registered to vote before I was licensed to drive. Which was true. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at September 07, 2020 04:20 PM (SSJSf) 142

If anyone's looking for something new and original to watch, I have a young film-maker friend who wrote and directed this movie, called FORGERY.
https://preview.tinyurl.com/yy9266z6 It's a Breaking-Bad-esque tale of a painfully shy, nerdy university student with a secret talent for forgery, and when his secret gets out to the wrong people, he finds himself caught in a downward spiral of criminality. Rated R for language and violence. He shot it in 10 days on a budget of zero. Often Ed-Wood-style with no permits. Considering all that, and that the actors are not professionals, it's pretty damn impressive. Most of the music is original to the film. This guy works as a miner by day to finance his dreams of screenwriting and directing. If you like the flick, go ahead and give him a like and a subscribe. I know he'd appreciate it. The thing about 1984 was Reagan was running on "Morning in America"
Mondale tried to make the play as the fiscal adult and ran on a pledge to raise taxes. That was a terrible mistake, and ran afoul of the optimism that was starting to break out as the long economic decline was finally coming to an end. There are parallels to today. But two things stick out in my mind: my old man watched CBS News at 5:30, and in my earliest memories, they had an image of some guy named Carter on the screen for part of the reporting. Soon thereafter it was replaced by another image, that of some guy named Reagan.

Pelosi was using the Air Force as her own private air fleet to taxi her and her family and friends across the country up to 9 years after 9/11 when they first allowed her to use the military plane as speaker of the house. It was supposed to only be temporary until air travel considered safe again.

"Almost 1,000 people move to Florida EVERY DAY as families abandon northern cities like New York, New Jersey and Connecticut - with home sales more than doubling in some parts of the Sunshine State" 1000 a day. Do you Florida folks notice anything unusual ?? More people, traffic, RE prices through the roof ? Posted by: runner at September 07, 2020 04:16 PM I posted this in the Grenell thread earlier. Discovered this while researching past election turnout and results. ==== A key state is again going to be Florida (29 EV). Trump won by 112,000 votes (1.2%) in 2016. But the amazing thing about Florida is their population and turnout volatility. Their population increases by an average of 7% every 4 years. Florida's increase in turnout the last 5 elections was: 2000: 5.9mil (+12%) 2004: 7.6mil (+28%) 2008: 8.4mil (+10%) 2012: 8.5mil (+1%) 2016: 9.4mil (+11%) That is wild, considering most states' turnout does not vary more than 3-5% or so. Here is Michigan (16 EV): 2000: 4.2mil 2004: 4.8mil (+14%) 2008: 5.0mil (+3%) 2012: 4.7mil (-5%) 2016: 4.8mil (+1.4%) Posted by: Clyde Shelton at September 07, 2020 04:27 PM (Do5/p) Posted by: will pick a nic latter at September 07, 2020 04:28 PM (GIeIM) 172

There is no word in the English language to characterize their familial relationship.
For the record, it is this: Gavin Newsom's aunt married Nancy Pelosi's brother-in-law. It's slightly too complicated for our language to have a word for their relationship. The closest we might have is nephew-in-law. Posted by: zombie at September 07, 2020 04:07 PM (HEEq1) Isn't nephew by marriage an all encompassing term that lets you know they aren't blood relatives? I think the Pelosi salon trip, along with the Michigan boating incident, along with the Cuomo mask exemption, along with the DeBlasio gym incident, plus the fact that it just came to light that gyms for California government employees have never closed, will have an impact.
Yeah its the little stuff like Fauci sitting in the stands to watch a baseball game, not wearing a mask. That's what annoys people far more than big policy things and major events like impeachment or trying to oust the president with ridiculous cooked up lies. That's too big and remote for people. 207 Another thing that killed Carter was the failed rescue attempt of the American hostages in Iran- nearly a dozen men killed, total debacle, and an apt metaphor for Carter's presidency
Posted by: DB- just DB. at September 07, 2020 04:36 PM (iTXRQ) Again, I was rather young for Carter; my main memory of the hostage crisis was going through the elementary school in Germany passing the occasional locker with a faded sticker with an American flag with the words "FREE THE HOSTAGES" on the bottom, but..looking at it through my historian's eyes, I'd have to say the Carter presidency was doomed starting on November 4, 1979. Sure, Iran regards the Vienna Convention of 1961 as a good thing to wipe asses with to this day - don't forget they arrested the UK Ambassador to Iran in the beginning of the year for checking out a demonstration - but how in the hell does one of our embassies get stormed and hostages taken from the embassy? That had to be enough for people. I can't imagine Americans back then just saying "oh, well, no biggie." So right then, Carter was in trouble. And he dragged his feet with some decisions that should have been obvious. Operation Eagle Claw came in April and was a bloody mess, and the same month he had the bright idea "Hey! Let's PNG the Iranian embassy staff and order the embassy closed in DC!" (Not, say, around the 5th of November, you dummy?) And as for Eagle Claw, it was rather obvious from that that he was not looking after the military and its readiness. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at September 07, 2020 04:52 PM (SSJSf) 276

Since they began trending in 2008, they have spread like wildfire. Literally. The fad was started by Jenna Karvunidis, a blogger and self-described "DIY'er and feminist mom of all lady babies." She concocted the party as a way to celebrate the conception of her first child, which was a hard journey for her and her husband, as she'd suffered several miscarriages along the way. Now that her firstborn is presenting along the gender spectrum, Karvunidis has regrets about creating a cultural trend that focuses so much on the sex of a child in utero. Pretty sure yeah. Its one of the dumbest twee things ever, either that or a greedy nasty trick. We're having a new special party for the baby, bring gifts! Uh huh. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 07, 2020 04:52 PM (KZzsI) There are weird things I don't get in modern times. My gender reveal party was around the time the doc said "Congratulations, Catch Thirty-Thr33's Mom, it's a boy!" In a time where my parents had to have two sets of names ready to go, one a boy's first and middle names, and a girl's first and middle names. Just in case. Or, for that matter, the way people announce "We are expecting!" these days. (By the way, as I love and respect the ladies - who exactly is this "we"?) I hated my HS graduation and wish I was nowhere near it but I fully and completely understand why they happen: what follows 12th grade? That at least makes sense to me. But...middle school graduations? Elememtary school graduations? KINDERGARTEN??? Oy. (In middle school in eighth grade our principal got on the intercom and announced we had ten minutes to leave campus. More or less, "don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.") I'm sure there is other weirdness but those are the ones I think are silly off the top of my head. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at September 07, 2020 04:59 PM (SSJSf) 299

> We're having a new special party for the baby, bring gifts!
Things for which I will buy your child a gift, IF we are CLOSE friends or business associates: 1) birth/baptism (only one, not both) 2) confirmation, Bar Mitzvah, or similar 3) High school graduation (MAYBE) 4) college graduation 5) wedding That's it. No kindergarten graduations, no "gender reveals", no Little Knothead got a good citizenship trophy for not setting the school on fire this week. 5) wedding Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at September 07, 2020 05:01 PM (hj4fI) 301

265 Why are HOAs tolerated in this country?
Because a few rotten apples can ruin an entire neighborhood and the only way to stop them is to organize and use the law. It became necessary and then evil. Like most things do. Because there is no law in this country requiring someone to buy a home in a community with an HOA.
Don't want an HOA? Don't buy a home in a community with an HOA. Pretty simple, actually. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at September 07, 2020 04:45 PM (3D/fK) 'Tis my plan, actually. "But there's no huge sweeping epidemic among them. Why is that, do you figure?"
I've been puzzling that one, too. I have three theories: 1) It's nonsense. Covid isn't very contagious at all. 2) There has been a huge sweeping epidemic but Covid isn't very dangerous. 3) There has been a huge sweeping epidemic, and many have died, but it has gone unreported. Hey there! Quick question that's totally off topic.
Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when viewing from my iphone4. I'm trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to fix this problem. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thanks! Posted by: orivesi mainostoimisto at September 20, 2020 03:18 AM (cQHYj) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0662 seconds. |
