Insurers do this because emergency funds usually cover this kind of thing, and its not worth it to them to protect random sudden violence by looters, especially these days.
Generally I don't like insurance companies and consider them a scam but they have my sympathy here. Remember, by federal law, insurers have to have enough in cash and readily-available assets to cover EVERY CLAIM THEY HAVE so they have a huge pool of cash. But they have to keep that up, and a gigantic hit to their resources like an entire city claiming their shops would shut down anyone. Hot tip: Your insurer is unlikely to pay you more than you paid in.
Actually, that's not true. If it were true, you'd be an idiot to take out insurance. You'd be better off to just invest the money that would go toward premiums (which is what the insurance company does with the premiums). The whole idea of insurance (from the insured's perspective) is to take a guaranteed small loss to buy protection - from the pool of other insureds - against a loss that is unlikely but would be catastrophic if it occurred. This wasn't some grand 20-year plan for profit-taking, it was an opportunistic attempt to blame riots on Trump and it backfired, bigly. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at September 01, 2020 04:51 PM (cfSRQ) Newark is still a shit hole. Now, of course, in history class, we learn that all of these cities who went through race riots in the '60s and '70s became shit holes do to "white flight" which is when the racist white people moved to the suburbs because they didnt like having black neighbors. They don't mention race riots in that context. But then when the whites moved back, it was gentrification and wrong because "black people used to live here" and "gentrification is racism." So... yeah. Anyways, my point is that rioting does not increase property values in a city. Posted by: Harry Paratestes at September 01, 2020 04:57 PM (cnTJD) 215

Another BS declarative that persists. Property is life investment. One's time is one's money. They are interchangeable. And some property simply cannot be "replaced". Think of a housefire. From the "protesters" to the journalists to the professional athletes to even the politicians. How many of any people in those groups have actually held a real job in their lives? How many have any actual knowledge of how business works or how capitalism works or how to run a small business? Everyone from journalists to politicians to professional athletes went straight from college to their current careers. Where they don't have to know how anything in real life works in order to succeed in their jobs. Athletes definitely need to know nothing. Journalists just need to know how to follow orders on how to lie to the public. Politicians... name one who has held a real job outside of politics. Name one who knows how to balance a home budget. The ones who do, they don't last long in politics. Because they are the ones trying to make difference fixing corruption and wasteful spending. But this is what this temper tantrum is all about. It's a bunch of people who have no idea how the real world works, how the average person earns a living, how the average business is run and they're just angry after being fed lies and propaganda their entire lives. And instead of educating and informing themselves of facts, they just run with the lies and throw a fit. Who are the people that make up Black-Lives-Matter and antifa? The vast majority are criminals and radicals. Then there are the leaders who are also radicals. You're not seeing a small business owner involved with riots and looting. The D's are already worried that if Trump appears to have won by an landslide on Election Night, that a lot of people won't accept that Biden won, after all the fraudulent ballots come streaming in. Expect to see a big media PR campaign after Labor Day explaining that the concept of "Election Day" is outmoded, and you need to be thinking about "Election Week" or "Election Month". Election Night, you'll also see the networks refuse to call states for Trump. "Yes, it appears that Trump is eight points ahead in Minnesota tonight, but we sophisticates know that Biden will take Minnesota, once all the late ballots are counted." It's why the Democrats are panicking - they are worried that a preference cascade is occurring that will give Trump such a lead on Election Night that efforts to steal the election later won't seem remotely credible. Meanwhile the destruction of California continues to accelerate:
https://www.sfchronicle.com/ education/article/Judge-bars-University- of-California-from-all-use-15531662.php Judge bars University of California from all use of SAT, ACT scores in admissions "The University of California, which has already stopped requiring applicants for admission to take the SAT or ACT, must go further and prohibit campuses from allowing prospective students to submit their scores on the exams ..." They say that this is merely while coronavirus exists...but since they also say that coronavirus will be with us forever, well, the SAT is now banned forever. As someone who knows history in detail noted a awhile ago: The SAT itself started as a far-left anti-racism initiative. Back in the "old days," colleges based many of their decisions on "legacy admissions" -- i.e. if you had relatives who previously went to the school, then you were given priority. Since in the even-earlier old-old-old days most college students were WASPs, this meant that Jews and other minorities had less of a chance to get in, since all the slots were taken by legacy WASP students applicants, even in colleges that didn't have an overt "No Jews" policy. So they invented a system whereby everyone had to take the exact same neutral test, and whoever did best on the test, REGARDLESS of thier race or "legacy" status -- they were admitted. Super-left-wing idea! In the 1960s, at least. Imagine: people admitted on merit, not on family connections or race or religion. In the leftists' fantasy, all minorites would equally benefit from this. Except -- oooooops -- only Jews and Asians benefitted. Because they did best on tests. But the other minorities -- oooooooooooooooooooooops -- actually ANTI-benefitted from it, because they did terrible on tests. So blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans had now even LESS of a chance to get in to college, because the tests revealed that they weren't even as college-ready as their inflated grades from mosty-minority high schools suggested. (I..e a minority student with a 3.9 SPA from an all-minority high school actually performed worse on the SAT than a (for example) Jew with a 3.0 GPA from a college-prep high school, because all schools "graded on a curve," and the minority student with the 3.9 GPA only had to do better than the other minority students, and not compete against most AP students in high school). So he left has been franctically trying to (at first) explain away and then (by now) undo thier super-egalitarian policy. What formerly had been a far-left anti-racism initiative evnetually has now ben deemed a super right-wing racist conspiracy to keep minorities out of college!! Pretty soon, inevitably, they will just dispense with pretense and attempts to fiddle with the system litle by little, and just pass a law saying that whites, Jews and Asians are barred from college, which henceforth will only be open tp blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans are any Caucasian who can cliam to be Muslim or some bizarre gender. You think I'm joking, but look for it soon. Posted by: zombie at September 01, 2020 05:02 PM (HEEq1) 264

MN victims of the riots\looters should be launching a class action suit against the local governance for lack of protection, breakdown of civil authority, and the allowance orders rendered by the de-facto leadership to riot, loot, and cause harm to both material and body.
Then, go after the various media outlets (news, Social, ect) that had a presence in the riots, glorified, 'egged-on', or any other non-impartial behavior that championed the destruction, violence, or other un-lawful behavior. There is plenty of blame, plenty of legal recourse to go out by the victims, against their local governance and those whom committed the destruction. It is perhaps worth noting some of the events that led to the American Civil War, lest anyone say or think there are no similar warning signs in this present unrest: - John Brown was hanged for the crime of raiding Harper's Ferry, VA. A staunch abolitionist, Brown could no longer watch the commerce of slave trading take place and do nothing. But for a long time, all anyone knew of him was that he was a murderous criminal who was executed for his crimes. - The idea of "popular sovereignty" took root in the South as the notion that local municipalities and states could follow their own laws and ordinances which took higher priority than Federal statutes. - U.S. Senator Benton - an abolitionist - was threatened with a pistol in the Capitol Building...by another Senator. - A confrontation in which abolitionists confront two slave owners attempting to capture an escaped slave ends in a gun battle. - States which saw the most pre-war violence were under the jurisdiction of one political party in local and state governments. - Legislation is passed in some states that specifically abolishes Federal authority. - Scientific and Sociological manifestos are published which purport to justify why slavery is not only natural, but necessary for higher civilizations to function. - "Bleeding Kansas"; a time when the Kansas territory is rocked by riots and looting which eventually culminates in open armed conflict between Pro-slavery secessionists and abolitionist "Jayhawkers". - Entire cities - such as Lawrence, KS - burn as a result of rioting. - Anti-slavery senator Charles Sumner is attacked and beaten nearly to death on the floor of the Senate. - John Fremont runs for president under the slogan "Free speech, free press, free soil, free men, Frémont and victory!" The opposition threatens to escalate violence if he is elected. - The "Panic of 1857" occurs, in which speculations in railroad stock causes inflation. This effects primarily the northern states and as a result, many prominent southerners declare they are immune to economic downturn thanks to pro-slavery economic practices. - Pro-slavery dissidents in Kansas take 11 abolitionists hostage and execute 5 of them based on nothing more than the fact they don't agree with secession or support slavery. - The Democratic National Convention is rocked by chaos as more radical elements seize control of the nomination process and want to adopt pro-slavery platforms for the party. No nominee is named and the party decides to reconvene in Baltimore 6 weeks later. - Abraham Lincoln is elected president. Many senators and prominent figures in the South declare he is not their president and begin to move in favor of secession.

The real problem is the city will never be able to sell a municipal bond again. No money for roads, bridges, water service and sewers. And I suspect some of these buildings had lead paint in them and/or asbestos. Which adds another layer of expense to proper disposal. not to mention our national shortage of respirator makes needed to work with hazmat stuff. And as I understand it the age gap has a minimum, a floor, but I can't remember what it is, maybe 16 or something like that. So its a bit misrepresented, but the truth doesn't exactly put California in a good light. - - - OK, thanks for the clarification. Still a gross law, though. perhaps we can trick-or-treat by mail. send a halloween SASE to all your neighbors, and they can use it to return a candy bar.

General question: What are people. seeing in states that have never done mail-in ballots previously with regard to deadline for receipt of ballots?
In Colorado, ballots must be received by the Clerk by 7:00 pm on Election Day. It doesn't matter if it was postmarked on an earlier date. In addition to mailing your ballot you have the options to vote in-person or drop off your mail-in ballot at drop boxes located at polling places or Clerk's Office. Mail-in ballots are correlated one-to-one with voter rolls, and if you vote in person and also mail in a ballot, only one will be counted. Are you anticipating shenanigans and protests over late ballots and the potential for post-election day harvesting in your state? Posted by: Muldoon at September 01, 2020 05:30 PM (m45I2) 479

I've been to Ft. Hood. It's somewhere between No and Where in Texas. Still, that's very odd. Not the prostitution. You'll find that near any military base. The missing persons and suicides? Weird. X-Files weird.

Sadly, I'm already resigned to it being canceled here in CA. And I love Halloween. My town will still do something for the kids if the local businesses can afford it, but door-to-door is unlikely.
Posted by: Chunk Hunger at September 01, 2020 05:28 PM Since the Karen's are few and far between, I imagine the door-to-door will continue because the community-wide events like the bonfire, the preschool/kindergarten parade in the high school, and the state park's trunk-or-treat will be cancelled. I had this conversation with a younger SJW cousin with her masters in psychology regarding "they have insurance."
What happens to everyone's premiums when those who are lucky enough collect on their claims? They go up. How does that impact costs to customers? They go up too. Plus, why would anyone rebuild where the public elect failed to uphold their office and deploy local law enforcement and other public services at their disposal? They wouldn't. This happened in Detroit about 50 years ago. Posted by: Buckeye Abroad at September 01, 2020 05:35 PM (GiKLa) 486

If you increase their taxes, they increase their prices.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at September 01, 2020 05:27 PM (YqDXo) As I explain to people, there is only one place for any business taxes to come from, and that is the consumer. If you vote to increase taxes on businesses, you are just voting for the price of everything you buy to go up. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at September 01, 2020 05:37 PM (jK8Z7) 488
LOL. On Portland Reddit, a Tesla driver is complaining that a pro-Trump semi at Saturday's demonstration rammed him (no damage).
The video uploaded shows that the Tesla was brake-checking the semi. Portland in a nutshell. Posted by: The ARC of History! at September 01, 2020 05:37 PM (I2/tG) 489

Businesses and property owners sell or abandon property in DemocRat cities in Lockdown and being burned/looted by Antifa/BLM . . . The cities, or financial people, sell the property to willing buyers, who wait for the riots/looting/burning to end/be put down, then rebuild and flip the property for a profit. Or, the city gets bailed out by the Feds, and they build 'affordable housing, for the refugges of the Ilhan Omar persuasion.

Don't worry. All of the elected officials in Minneapolis will be cheerfully reelected, and the insurers all thoroughly demonized and eventually forced by state law to cover damage caused by riots.

Democrat filth didn't raise on dime to help black people or the business owners burned out. But they did raise bail money so that the arsonists could get back to work burning the cities down the next night. Branding is important: The Democrat Riots Of 2020. Or the Joe Biden Riots.
