Meet The PetMorons

Hi, Mis Hum!

Just wanted to share a picture of the newest addition to our family. This is Pepper, our new granddog. She is a Berniedoodle, just a few weeks old. SIL has allergies, and BDs are supposedly hypoallergenic. We'll see.

(I wanted a grandbaby, but I have been told by our daughter that I have to be patient....)

We are heading out to California in a couple of weeks for a visit. I am sure I will hate to leave the little munchkin when we head back home!

This is Big Momma (or Momma Cat) our version of everyone's favorite meme cat, Smudge.

We inherited her when our daughter passed away 3 years ago. She was half feral, and Michelle always told us that she didn't like to be held or petted, but that wasn't gonna fly in our house.

We insisted on treating her like all of the other cats, and now she jumps up on the couch for hubby to pet her, then she snuggles up right next to him and demands to share his space. I always tell him that Michelle is coming to visit him in cat form, so he puts up with the intrusion (he's a big softie).

She doesn't look it when she is walking, but Momma is a HUGE kitty, and all muscle!

We also inherited her daughter, Mocha, but she likes to be outdoors whenever possible. We don't let Momma outside, though - with her white fur, she would be too tempting a target!

Teresa in Fort Worth

So do you overfeed the grandbaby extra T-R-E-A-T-S? That's a grandparent's job isn't it? Sounds like you have succeeded with taming Big Momma. Safe travels to CA and thanks for sharing your "family" with us today.

Hey Misanthropic Hum,
Here is my daughter's new pup, Rowan. He is a stray pit bull mix that she adopted yesterday. So far he is a little bit of an attention whore but he seems to enjoy being around people so I think he's going to work out great. I always enjoy the pet threads so thank you for doing them. - Mike

Hey back Mike, thanks for the photo. Good luck to your daughter with her new addition. Pups are work, but with the right work and love she'll have a great companion.

Teach (1).jpg

This is Teach. Full name "Edward Teach, the Dread Pirate Tabbybeard, Scourge of the Seven Seas". Born in a boat, kidnapped from his mother, and rescued by my wife and I just as he opened his eyes. We are firmly entrenched as his Mommy and Daddy. Also known as "Stinker", always on the lookout for any trouble he can get into. - Teachs Pet Monkey

We aren't sure you are telling us the straight skinny. How could that cute kitteh be such a stinker? Gorgeous cat. Thanks for your contribution today.

Miss. Hum,

I finally decided to search through my pics to find a good pic of our dogs. In the process I first came across one I took last week of my buddy's dog, Oscar (the family's name is Meyer, so...). He is (they think) a cocker-poodle-Shih-Tzu mix. He was the inspiration for our family to get our two dogs.

We first were introduced to Oscar when our kids were just toddlers. He was so good with them, we knew we needed to find a dog like him right away. Now, even at 17 years old (yes, 17) he has a lot of life and energy. Here in this pic he's a little sad because it's just him and me while his owners were away.

Thanks for the thread. And yes, my dogs next time. - Chin music

What a cute little snuggle buddy. Quite the impression he made on you to go out and get your own doggehs. Yes, next time, your dogs, ok?

IMG_4244.jpg

This is Judy (the black and white) and Daisy, two of our favorite felines. Judy and Daisy were graced by being in the pet thread awhile back and they have been avid followers ever since. You can tell from their looks of consternation they have been a little disappointed in the feline appearances in the pet thread recently, so they asked us, “What are you going to do about it!” Being the low ranking members of their pride we would like to encourage other cat people to give our girls something to look forward to on a lazy Saturday afternoon by sending their cat pics and cat stories into the pet thread.

Shaquerone and BionicBack (lurkers in the Great Free State of South Carolina)

What a pose. I'm curious as how you did that. Do you herd cats as well? Lovely cats you have there. Thanks for sharing with us today.

Hello MisHum!

Some time ago, I submitted our beloved rescue GSD “Noble” for the pet thread. He (and my daughter) were thrilled to be featured, but alas, he has passed on and is now chasing squirrels in heavenly pastures. He left us around the middle of April, making my birthday the worst I’ve ever had. I had convinced myself (and my wife) that I was done with dogs for a while, but then the loneliness of not having that constant companion set in, and I brought home another little furball, only a few weeks later. I humbly submit “Tucker”. He came home at 7 weeks, and is now about 5-1/2 months (yes, that’s the same dog!). He had an unfortunate run-in with a black lab who stole his bone, and earned a few notches in his ear for his trouble. Now, he doesn’t like black dogs (is that racist?). Otherwise, he’s a loveable goofball, but already developing into an intimidating protector for our family. I think he is already aware that he has some big paw prints to fill!

As usual, love the pet thread! But, chalk me up as a vote for more bats, less cats!

Best regards, Shepherd Lover

My, they certainly grow up fast. The current photo of Tucker cracked me up. He needs some filling out. Is he klutzy? Glad you found a new companion. Good luck.

This is sweet River. She was living in a junk yard as a puppy when a rescue group picked her up. My son adopted her and she stayed at our house until he could move. My husband kept asking when he was going to come get his dog. Now we say to my son “you will never get this dog.” We love her so much! She’s smart, funny and just so adorable. Living in that junk yard made her clever and crafty, both traits that are irresistible.
Thanks for sharing her with the world! - Tracy

That's a frequent story, "Mom, Dad, watch my pet, please." Next thing you know the pet belongs to Mom & Dad. Congrats on your new addition. He certainly is a cutie.

daveingl.jpg

This is Dave in Fla. I mentioned two weeks ago that I need to send a picture of out tri-color collie, Star.

She was bread to be a guide dog, and we raised her from a puppy, then sent her back to the school for training and placement. She failed training (at least 50% of dogs do) and we were asked to give her a permanent home with our two goldens (also retired guide dogs).

As of a few weeks ago she became an only child and is now 12 years old. She is in good health, but starting to slow down. She is always happy when it is bedtime.

The picture is of her and her sisters Yager and Press, who we miss a lot.

Dave you have a stronger constitution than I do. There is no way I could raise a puppy and give it to the program. That is special my friend. Gorgeous family of dogs you have in this photo. Thanks.

9 Hello pet lovin' Morons.

I'm presently very tempted to adopt a new pup. I already have a 5 yo lab/pit, and I've never had > 1 dog.

But... having been smacked by hurricanes Charley, Frances, Jeanne, and Irma (and boy howdy she slapped me pretty hard), I've made contact with a local rescue org that deals with Caribbean dogs displaced by hurricanes, in this case a bunch of potcakes from Grand Bahama (Dorian hit them hard a thousand years ago in 2019).

So... how big is the jump from one dog to 2 dogs? Double food & vet bills, of course. Anything else?

======

Just sayin'... I've never known of a cat that didn't reject Science Diet. Maybe except yours.

Last time I bought pet food, I asked the person what kind cats like/dislike. She said they love junk food. The unhealthier it is, the more they like it. They want cheeseburgers, sundaes, fries, hostess cupcakes. Cheap stuff. I've found this to be true with a sick cat that had to eat healthy.

That said, my cat eats Royal Canin and Purina Beyond with no objections. Always go for grain-free.

29 Bless the animals and the people who love them!

One thing you learn about as a cat person is Tanglefoot. If you stand in one place, then before you move, you have to check your ankle area to make sure you won't get tripped. Another example is getting out of a chair and walking toward a doorway. The cats suddenly decide that THEY were planning on going there too, and make it a race, colliding with your legs, and maybe scratching your bare feet as they tear through in the rush.

It's so worth it! I love them and I know they love me.

37 Conor and I went for a nice walk at Manassas Battlefield Park. There is a bridge that narrows the walking path considerably at one point. Just our luck that coming the other way from the parking lot, there was a gentleman with two huge Doberman Pinschers. Conor was convinced they'd make great playmates, but I kept thinking that the one nearest me was eyeing my throat, so I was glad when we passed without incident.

My problem is that in situations like this you can never be sure how well trained the dogs are, nor can you be sure the owners are really competent and have control of the dogs. Fortunately, this owner and these dogs were very well behaved.

All my cats have been feral kittens and adults I've taken off the street. You've seen my pictures of Cheesehead and Flash, both rescued as adults. Adult ferals bear the scars and memories of hard life outdoors, and they seem even more loving and grateful to have a good indoor home. When they pass, they are the ones I most grieve. My consolation is that I did the most that anybody could do to make them comfortable and happy.

First real "d'aawwww" of the day, Pepper, the Berniedoodle. (And here I thought Bernie doodles was what Biden drew while trying to collect his thoughts.... Ack! Sorry --no polly ticks.)

Edward Teach - great pic. Milady said, "Here's someone who names cats like we do." Thinking of dear, long-departed "Roxy," Roxanne Rolex Raccoon... had some other alliterative names I've forgotten.

Oscar Meyer, "a little sad" is just what I thought when I saw the pic. Sometimes I see a pic and I anticipate it's going to be a "now departed" critter; so I was glad to see it was 'only' loneliness. Dogs can be so expressive!

The pup pic of Noble (great name) earned maybe even a bigger "d'aawwww" than Pepper. I "d'aawwww" in an embarrassing falsetto.

I skipped some, but it's easy to see they're all the best dog and cat ever.

71 Someone posted a video on Twitter today of a mother duck walking along with 6 tiny ducklings following her.

She walks over a sewer grate with her big webbed feet and of course her ducklings follow her but only one tries to cross the grate, and that one drops through.

Mom walks a little farther, now with 5 ducklings following her and she hears the disappeared duckling calling for help, so she turns around and walks back across the grate and of course then the 5 remaining ducklings disappear down the grate. Leaving mother duck walking around the grate in a circle wondering WTF.

I like to think that the person taking the video ran out, pulled up the grate and used some method to pull the ducklings out.

That video is haunting me right now.

75 We just successfully completed the project to mount a new winch on the ATV. 5 hours of futzy work, dirt yoga, full contact electrical wiring, and world class swearing in 2 languages. The bride helped the entire project. 4 hands were often needed. We brought in Son 2 and Duck Dumping GF for a brief time when swearing peaked and 8 hands were needed. Feeling good, real good. 87 Pet Thread!!!!

I'd seen the "Dog Named Stella" vid here before. Amazing how she doesn't even slow down as she dives into the leaf pile. Clearly she's done this before.

The cat breeds thing is something I can speak to. The No. 1 they list is the Siberian: my current older cat's breed. The three I've known have tended to be prickly or sickly, but good companions overall. One thing the Siberian card didn't mention is that part of the breed standard is a "sweet expression." Chekov has that. (Very deceptive.)

Chekov D. Siberian's vet put him on hydrolyzed protein food from Royal Canin, an Rx because of his persistent diarrhea. It seems to have cleared the problem up almost completely. But again, I don't know if it's for kidney troubles as well. The stuff is not a casual purchase, $55 for 7.7 lbs.

He likes the stuff, and his healthier brother the big black cat does too.

111 I'm inclined to think that the Norwegian Forest Cat is one of the most beautiful animals on earth. (No, I don't have one.)

I made the brief acquaintance of one grand champion fellow named "Harry Potter" at a cat show some years ago: brown tabby with rivers of white fur on face, chest, paws, and tail, and a very good personality. His owner/breeder had him out of the show cage, sitting on his grooming table, for people to pet him. He took it all in grand style, as if he expects royal treatment, and gets it all the time.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 12, 2020 04:30 PM (rpbg1)

112 Though the British Longhair in that card is fantastic-looking. Chekov's breeder occasionally has one of the golden Siberians; they're marked like that, and often have green eyes.

My late Arizona, the (possible) Maine Coon mix, looked something like the one on that card, but with more white -- and a sweeter expression. Pics I've seen of Maine Coons over the decades since they became well known shows that breeders are going for a "fiercer" look. Though the cats are still called "gentle giants."

I hope you, FenelonSpouse and FenelonSon are thriving. Has school opened for him like it has for me?

And a special shout-out to Jesse.

A bath? Hmmmm. Oh, I see the correction.

I think the MoMeet will be at Rancher Bob's and Cow Lady Queen's wonderful spread. They have a lot of room.

Maybe I should ask how big their bath is, or is it really a stock pond with Koi? It is Texas, after all.

161 I just played another of Anneka Svenska's vids, where she is sitting with a pack of Norwegian wolves and howls with them. My cats paid no attention to the sounds.

On the other hand, years ago I played a wolf-howl track on a CD, and Arizona the part-Maine Coon got edgy and stalked around as if worried about his territory.

Thx very much for asking. That is kind. FenSon is talking anthropology on line through the community college (It's an elective.) and microbiology. He goes up to school for that class and the lab-which is a good thing.

The schools are nutty in N.J. so spouse is driving A/B rotation but only for the high school. No classes on Wednesday.

I hope you and Mrs. Salty Dog are doing well.

I can't speak in absolutes, but I doubt they are. It's late in the season to start calling mates over for sharing, and I suspect they'd be much more likely to be as quiet as possible so as to not draw attention to themselves.

Good luck and hopefully it's just a neighbor helpfully setting out a bowl of delicious food because aww, that poor kitty is probably hungry.

Our schools gave you the option of half days (2 weeks on 2 weeks off with virtual) or all virtual. As the hybrid sessions required total masks and plexi barriers and did not include meal time, we chose virtual. We thought 2 weeks of all virtual with 2 weeks of half virtual followed by 2 weeks of all virtual seemed confusing and messy. In the hybrid class you'd be watching the teacher teach the other half of the class for two weeks, as well. We decided to forgo masks and that crazy schedule.

Plus this way they get to hangout with the new pup and Rusty.

FWIW, I had a cat who decided he was done with being domesticated and he turned feral on his own. He would still come around and hang out, but he didn't want to sleep inside anymore. I'd leave food out for him for a while (and always water) but he eventually wasn't eating anything out of that food bowl. Weird, independent animals.

I pray it will be so.

A couple of years ago one of our son's cats was carried off right by the house. Mrs928 says that she heard a cat scream about 2AM and our Bagel was not to be seen again. I made a Lost Cat poster and went around the neighborhood to put them up on telephone poles and on each likely candidate I found one to four lost cat posters. That was disheartening.

201 Wow the pet thread went risque!

I love Teresa's Momma cat she reminds me of my beloved Aphrodyte, of happy memory. I miss her still. I rescued her after her person was murdered and nobody wanted to adopt her because she was so shy. She turned out to be the very most loving cat i have ever owned, until i got her little sisters Skindy And Tini my hairless Cats...

But this year was a bumper crop for farm cats likely because my farm dog Fang relocated with my most trusted right hand woman.

This led to little kittens in the barn and all over the place and one nest being born in Lurch's workshop. well he could not resist playingh with the tiny baby fuzzy jellybeans born in the box. They must have liked it because these are the most tame feral cats on record. Their mom is a cat i call Crack Ho Mom, and their Grandma is Trixie, who tries to help raising them Usually Crack Ho Kittens die because mom is an idiot. This year i pulled them out of weird situations, grandma helped and Lurch's new shop sheltered them from the predators and was warm when needed and cooler when it had to be too.

they all lived.

So i had to give one to a friend to raise. She was little Preeka... Gave another sealpoint to the same friend who named her Princess Moonstone (seriously this is the most wonderful kitten i have ever raised) and wanted the twin.

ok so i went abpout taming the twin who was more cautious. he would flop on his side when petted but would avoid being picked up. Well, his best friend who was the tiny runt wanted in on it so i started petting him too. by the time they were tame enough to bring in and house train, of course the lady didnt want them.

thats ok now a friend said she wanted the friendly black one.

Right. Now shes moving and cant take them. My life has been truly hellish lately, and they have spend most of that time in my lap, little seal point Creampuff, and his brother Mr. Livingston Kindly The Not Cat. they have cuddled my blues away and play ridiculous games that cheer me up. Mr. Kindly refuses to let anyone not love him, and just relentlessly cuddles until you relent.

Why am I keeping them? because fuck you that's why. Honestly these are the best cats i have had since Tini and Skindy died of cancer years ago. they get along with the old cats just fine and Weaselbean is becoming resigned to playing with them, so they leave him alone. watching it is the best fun ever, and Lurch loves them. I might submit pictures so the moron horde can see what I'm talking about.
