The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I would be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus. That is the fundamental flaw of this administration’s thinking to begin with. In order to keep the country running and moving and the economy growing and people employed, you have to fix the virus. You have to deal with the virus.” Former VP Joe Biden

Quote II

Our black, gay mayor is not protecting the women in this city. I have a personal problem with that.” Taylore Norwood

Quote III

“The pricing is still way too high relative to what we’re seeing in the illicit market. If you are someone that consumes cannabis on a regular interval, there’s not a lot of incentive for you to transition over.”Canaccord Genuity analyst Matt Bottomley

Quote IV

This is what happens when malevolent narcissists don’t get slapped and thrown to the ground. The kind of psychology we’re seeing, over and over again, overwhelmingly from the left, is an exercise in bad faith, a fundamental dishonesty. It therefore isn’t amenable to correction with facts or debate, or appeals to reciprocity or some higher purpose. Tolerating such behaviour - and worse, deferring to it – will only encourage an escalation of vanity, malice and sociopathy. It may, however, be discouraged with reminders of physical consequences. Ideally, physical humiliation. A reminder that nasty little egos can be publicly broken.David Thompson

The problem with Ivy League graduates? Eventually, they become the movers and shakers of government. One of the things that made this country great is being rejected by Princeton undergrads.

College students say free speech is “unacceptable”

Not any longer. The president and two vice-presidents of the Princeton Graduate Student Government replied to their school’s shocking affirmation of free speech and the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, calling it “tone-deaf” and “unacceptable.”

In a letter written in response to Eisgruber and the administration, the three opined that the free speech policy protects “hate” at the university. They stated, “We as a student body are not looking for ‘dialogue’ on how to cope with institutional racism,” and averred that an emphasis on the importance of free expression “reads as a typical dog-whistle often used to excuse racist speech and hateful actions.”

The NFL continues it's Virtue Signaling spiral.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced the organization is banning fans from wearing headdresses at Arrowhead Stadium and there will also be a ban on face painting “styled in a way that references or appropriates American Indian cultures,” according to a release sent out on social media.

While we have discouraged fans from wearing headdresses for several years, effective immediately, fans will be prohibited from wearing headdresses into the stadium.
Face painting is still allowed for all fans, but any face paint that is styled in a way that references or appropriates American Indian cultures and traditions will be prohibited.

An ONT rule is no math. Rules were meant to be bent and/or broken. Sometimes, amirite?

A Fleet of Computers Helps Settle a 90-Year-Old Math Problem

By translating Ott-Heinrich Keller’s conjecture into a computer-friendly search, researchers confirmed a conjecture about seven-dimensional space.

A TEAM OF mathematicians has finally finished off Keller’s conjecture, but not by working it out themselves. Instead, they taught a fleet of computers to do it for them.

Keller’s conjecture, posed 90 years ago by Ott-Heinrich Keller, is a problem about covering spaces with identical tiles. It asserts that if you cover a two-dimensional space with two-dimensional square tiles, at least two of the tiles must share an edge. It makes the same prediction for spaces of every dimension—that in covering, say, 12-dimensional space using 12-dimensional “square” tiles, you will end up with at least two tiles that abut each other exactly.

Cognitive dissonance!

It appears cognitive dissonance runs deep in Portland, Oregon …

During riots Saturday in Portland, where left-wing Black Lives Matter and Antifa extremists have been harassing and assaulting local police and bystanders for weeks, these same left-wing extremists suddenly turned into bawling babies desperate for police protection after someone finally decided to fight back.

Lima, Peru has a population of 33,031,382. I'm just guessing here. But, I venture a guess or two that they have other bigger problems than non-social distancing nightclubs.

At Least 13 Killed In Peru Nightclub Stampede Triggered By Police 'Social Distancing' Raid

In an example of COVID-19-related law enforcement gone horribly awry, 13 people were killed in a deadly stampede, as patrons tried to flee a surprise police raid on a crowded Lima, Peru nightclub on Saturday night.

At least 6 people were seriously injured, including 3 cops.

The ONT Musical Interlude

On this day: August 23, 1967 - Keith Moon
Enjoying a wild birthday party Keith Moon drummer with The Who drove his Lincoln car into a Holiday Inn swimming pool. As the party had become out of control, the police were called to put an end to the festivities. Moon, ever keen to avoid the boys in blue snuck outside and got into a Lincoln Continental Limousine and attempted to make a getaway. Unfortunately, in his inebriated state he released the handbrake, and began rolling towards the pool. Moon simply sat back and waited, as the car crashed through the fence around the pool and into the water.

Born on this day: August 23, 1946 - Keith Moon
English drummer Keith Moon. The Who With The Who he scored the 1965 UK No.2 single 'My Generation' plus over 20 other Top 40 hits, 1967 US No.9 single 'I Can See For Miles' and rock opera albums 'Tommy' & 'Quadrophenia'. Moon was voted the second-greatest drummer in history by a Rolling Stone readers' poll. Moon died on 7th September 1978 after taking 32 clomethiazole tablets. via thisdayinmusic.com

One would think that being on a school board you would take your position seriously. No, not for this Genius Award Winner.

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh Public Schools board member learned the hard way on Wednesday what can go wrong in virtual meetings.

According to Channel 11 News’ exchange partners at TribLIVE, Veronica Edwards was accidentally seen disrobing and stepping into the shower during the district’s agenda review meeting, which was streamed live.

Her excuse, "“During the pandemic, I have experienced an increase of virtual meeting hours … more than ever before. The demand on my time has caused me to attempt to multi-task when some meetings are proceeding.

"Like many women and caregivers across the country, this has been a challenging time to achieve work-life balance, it’s been nearly impossible for me.”" H/T Isophorone Blog

Quite the apology. Not.

I really shudder to think how these morons would deal with an actual deadly pandemic. Something like smallpox or bubonic plague.

Actually, I think the reaction would actually be more subdued. Real danger has a tendency to be a clarifying experience.

Biden is going to "fix" a literal cold virus that has killed 0.0% of the US population and has deaths trending downwards even as we continually try to help revive it over and over and over through ongoing prevention of people interacting with one another.

42 Part of me feels the prestige of the Ivy Leagues is a good reflection on the US. But at what point can they be dethroned as standing for anything but SJW douchery?

I read "The Art of Gathering" by a professional facilitator and she had some interesting points. She was brave (revealing some mistakes she had made) but I'm sure her world of famous people (she talks about gathering night before dinners at big conferences so that this important people can get to know each other. It never occurs to her to question if these conferences actually accomplish anything. And she talked about a woman who made an Ivy League study group so they could be vunerable to each other and not always have to be selling themselves as Great. Might have worked for her little group (and she was SO proud of challenging the Harvard culture) but did she ultimately change the culture? Not at all. We really need to start treating someone from the Ivy league as disqualified - as over represented. And no celebrities anywhere.

45 So Sundays I take the dogs up to the woods to a little county park. Sometimes there are cars parked, like last weekend, but people are off hiking in the woods. The dogs can have some fun without bothering anyone.

Got there a little bit early today. There were at least ten cars, with a circle of 15-20 people at the tables we normally go to. They were all wearing their masks. Thought it might be some secret Antifa thing but it think they were all women so maybe outside yoga. They finally opened up the camp ground a bit further up the road so no luck there. Did find a quiet place to let the boy dogs out for a quick pee before we headed for home. Next weekend will likely be worse. I may have to take a day off during the week for them.

The overall experience at any flagship university is much better than at Ivy league hothouse indoctrination and credentialing factory. More and more people realize this. It will tell in the next generation.

Worldwide.

For perspective, 800K dead would only be 0.25 of 1% of the total US population. One quarter of one percent.

Due to some "emergency" act she can act as a dictator regarding all the shut down rules. However, with the state constitution, I'm pretty sure that she can't raise tax rates without the legislature.

styled in a way that references or appropriates American Indian cultures

You mean the folks who never created any meaningful artwork using paint? Those folks? We can't use OUR paint to paint our faces with actual paint that is considered paint because the Indians might've gotten some dirt wet and rubbed it on their foreheads or a cave wall one time while they were busy not inventing the wheel?

166 these same left-wing extremists suddenly turned into bawling babies desperate for police protection after someone finally decided to fight back.

And they are furious that the Portland cops chose not to intervene in the mutual combat between the Proud Boys and Antifa. They are also accusing the cops of favoring the side that supports the cops over the side that wants to kill the cops. Who knew?

Later that night, Antifa attacked a police station again - a new twist was that they brought a guillotine with a teddy bear in it. The mayor of Portland is Ted Wheeler - get it?

They then burned the teddy bear along with a number of American flags.

At this point, the Portland cops aren't responding to reports of property crimes at all - nothing short of an imminent danger to life gets a police response.

A lot of Leftists are now publicizing the following chain of logic:

1) The Portland police was already undermanned before all this started.

2) For the last three months, a big chunk of the Portland police has had to be on riot duty every night.

3) Therefore, the Portland police only respond to the most serious crimes now.

4) The lack of police response proves that the police are useless.

191 Hey everybody. Been working all weekend. Gotta share this...

Something is wrong with lights or traffic here in SoCal, something serious.

I was making a delivery to Carson and came to an intersection where I waited through *three* cycles and never got a green light. Not sure the name of the other street, but I was trying to pass Albertoni Street. (That whole delivery was a clusterfcuk; I couldn't find the restaurant either and ended up having to cancel the order, so UberEats wasted 30 minutes of my life on that.)

Then only about 45 minutes later? I was at another intersection, this one I remember: Paramount Blvd and the 105 freeway, in Paramount. I was traveling south on Paramount and waiting for the light where the 105 offramp was.

I was blown away: My light was green, but at least 50 cars getting off the 105 freeway just blew right threw the red light they had, onto another through street. I and, I believe, other drivers at my red light were wondering what the fcuk is going on.

We all ended up waiting for another green. When we got it 2 minutes later, we were all paranoid about going through, but thankfully, apparently the group of people ignoring the previous red had long since past.

Is someone at CalTrans messing up lights and traffic for BLM or something? I am perplexed.

220 214 186 Had sad news tonight. An old friend in B.C., who I have know for nigh-on 50 years, was found dead in his home a day ago. Trailer was locked up tight, all the dead bolts set. Another friend was concerned, call RCMP for a welfare check. A cop came over, our friend managed to open a deadbolt, the cop entered, and found him deceased. Coroner's report pending.

You see, the Proud Boys are "outside agitators" (since most of them live in the more conservative suburb of Portland in the state of Washington) so they should be suppressed. Only residents of Portland should have freedom of speech.

Left-wing Portlanders firmly believe that the First Amendment doesn't apply if you cross a state line - unless you are going to a pipeline protest in the Dakotas, of course.

the Antifaps that get their cars vandalized go complain to the Portland cops, and I understand the cops take a report, ask for the names of anyone that might hold a grudge, give them a business card, and ask if they want to keep the investigation open.

someone is posting Trump 2020 on Antifap cars for some reason, and the footsoldiers then vandalize the cars for them.

241 Speaking of cognitive dissonance...I see a couple of towns over that some Qanon aligned protestors were holding signs to the effect of "pedophilia isn't ok!"

The local nextdoor idiots managed to argue in reference to this;

1) There aren't any pedophile elites that are too powerful to stop, and anyone believing otherwise is crazy

2) It is Donald Trump's fault that Epstein and his Hollywood friends were abusing kids.

3) The INS is made up of pedophiles.

You can't, rationally, believe in #2 or #3 if you believe #1. I mean the second two points are insane...but if you believe them #1 can't be true or even a reasonable point to hold.

But my latest was from 2016 when I said, not content to let people choose on their own, the Left was going to implement "live factchecking" on screen during debates in future elections.

Well CNN have already gone one better and are discussing doing "live factchecking" during the freaking *RNC*. And the "Biden campaign" supposedly demanded they do it during this year's debates. I don't think they will but it's now on the table.

This may not seem like that incredible a prediction, but 2016 was a looooong time ago, and at the time the idea was a little bit far-fetched.

Memphis is really bad, now.

I think at least some of the problem in a few of these areas is that they were assigned Katrina "refugees". I think Houston bore the brunt of it, but Springfield MO and Memphis have seen huge spikes in murders and violent crime since late 2005.

388 Hot damn:

If New York had the same rate of death of Florida the state of New York would have around 9,000 deaths instead of 32,000 deaths, meaning 23,000 people who are currently dead in New York would still be alive.

Far from doing a good job, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York may well have done the worst job in the entire world. Indeed, the only competitor with him is New Jersey governor Phil Murphy.

Look at the death rates per million in New York and New Jersey compared to the worst death rates in the entire rest of the world:

1. New Jersey 1807
2. New York 1694
3. Belgium 861
4. Peru 831
5. Spain 617
6. England 610
7. Italy 586
8. Sweden 575
9. Chile 564
10. United States 544

So New York and New Jersey were three times as bad as the average in the United States. (Indeed, they are the primary reasons why the United States death rate is so high.)

This is staggering information. New York and New Jersey didn't just do awful at protecting their residents, they were twice as bad as any other country in the entire world.

And they were positively awful compared to the other states in the country.

Here are the four largest largest states in the United States ranked by death per million residents:

1. New York 1694
2. Florida 481
3. Texas 401
4. California 307

Put plainly, New York is an unmitigated disaster compared to the rest of the world and the rest of the United States.

409 Spent the entire afternoon, until 7:00 P.M., working on a local buddy's bale truck. It's an old Chevy 1/2 ton with a bale handler on the back, for moving round bales. It was riding real low in the left rear. Turns out the left rear leaf spring was just bagged, and the right has a broken leaf.

Anyway, I looked around my place, because I once had spare set of Chevy pickup springs, but could not find them. So I took the left rear spring apart, and added in three leaves taken from a Studebaker sedan rear spring. They were the right width; had to drill new center bolt holes. It was a bugger to get all the new leaves squeezed together, and a new center bolt in it, but we managed it.

I'm going to do the right side tomorrow, but will simply replace the broken leaf, and add two new ones. Bales are heavy, you know. Going to have buy a new 15/16" 3/4 drive socket to undo the U-bolts. Mine "disappeared", but I found it in the ratchet drawer, welded to a socket for changing out dual wheel studs with square ends. So that's where it went! I have a memory like a steel sieve.

443 Himalaya berries - Mulberries ?
Posted by: runner at August 23, 2020 11:56 PM (zr5Kq)

the most aggressive blackberries ever found. They are originally from Armenia and were brought in because they have lovely fruit, but the canes get as thick as your thumb or better, the canes can grow 20' in a summer, and the thorns are like Jabberwocky claws.

There was a story when I was a kid, of a Sheriff's deputy surprising a young man burgling a store one night in one of the smaller towns, and the young man took a runner, and dove off the embankment of the highway into a tangle of wild blackberries at the bottom trying to escape. The deputy rolled up, pointed his searchlight over the embankment, saw the suspect tangled and trapped in the thorny vines . . . and went back at dawn with a county crew to cut him out. He explained that the guy didn't really act like he wanted any help just then, so he'd thought he'd let him think on it for a while.

No, they are a member of the raspberry clan. Woody stems that start green, and gradually become brown with a thin scale of bark. Many, many sharp thorns. They can, and do, form impenetrable thickets.

They don't burn very well. The berries are very tasty, sweet, and juicy, and the plants are very productive. But it is categorized as an invasive species.

If I were tasked with clearing a piece of land of them, I would mount a circular saw horizontally on a long boom extending from the front of a tractor or loader, get the saw spinning, and just drive it into the thicket. Feed the cut-off canes through a wood chipper.

Posted by: mnw at August 24, 2020 12:20 AM (Cssks)

473 "the U.S. is like Nazi Germany." I would be in ecstasy if I could cross examine her for 5 minutes about that.

If the US were like Nazi Germany, every Democratic member of Congress would be in a concentration camp. Every Democratic governor would be in a concentration camp.

Lesser-known potential opponents of the government would be humiliated and tortured for a couple weeks in a concentration camp, and released with the warning that they would be thrown into a concentration camp permanently if they got out of line.

Leftists seem to think that there was a prolonged period where the Left bravely opposed Hitler as Chancellor. In reality, Hitler got the Enabling Act passed three months after he became Chancellor, which gave him dictatorial powers, and Germany was a one-party dictatorship six months after Hitler became Chancellor.

These people have no idea what they are talking about.

Some farm/forest contractors I know use chainsaws, and they say if you get to the middle of the canes they are easy to cut down, but I think they are insane because of the risk of kickback or getting wound up in a vine while cutting.

If you have a real large patch to clear prior to planting, like several acres, the procedure is to run a cat through to make lanes and then spray herbicide and wait for it to die, then flatten it with the cat.

Problem is, the canes arch up and over, and come to ground again a few yards from where they are rooted, so you can't readily reach the root stems from outside the thicket. Once you get past the barrier wall, it's often bare ground inside.

486 "Himalaya" blackberries are from .... Armenia?? Not contesting it, just enjoying the odd nomenclature.

First time I visited Armenia it was August. Beautiful warm weather. The farmer's market in downtown Yerevan was pretty spectacular, in terms of produce.

I don't recall blackberries, but I do recall the cherries - "Rainier" cherries, maybe, they were yellow/red? The eggplant were an amazing purple ("aubergine" in Armenian - that is, one of the many French borrow-words used in Armenia, which includes even something as basic as "thank you" - "merci" in place of "shna-HAR ka-lutz-YOAN").

The kebab in the fresh flatbread (lavash) was outstanding.

Iran used to counterfieit USD $20 bills (using machinery sold to the Shah), and it was very funny - one always had to travel with brand-new bills. Armenian vendors, with an American, who obviously just came from the US - but they had to check your currency. Well, "check" by looking at it against the sun, scratching it, and other dumb meaningless methods.

Power and water were available for a few hours, usually in the evening. You know, sort of like California, in 2020. In Armenia, it was a problem of a little war with their neighbor, through which all the pipelines ran. In California ..... well, I think it's a different problem.

My feelings about the Dems are based mostly on their being a criminal organization for 200 years, what with the Slavery and Jim Crow and KKK and Abortion targeted at minorities and BLM and AntiFa, and etc., etc. CoVid is just another of their insane sins.

The Press should also be flensed from the Earth as they've led the way in lying about every aspect of CoVid. Polls of the populace show that nobody has a clue what the truth of the matter is with respect to severity of the disease. The commenters on this Blog have a good idea, but the general populace is completely clueless.

The MSM has intentionally lied about everything about CoVid for 8 months and hurt tens of millions with their lies. There is no accountability at all for them. And the Administration has to do stupid shit like call for the eradication of a virus because the lies are so thick in the Press there is no real way to counter it.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 24, 2020 01:01 AM (s9ZrQ)

505 ARC, actually it's probably unlikely that shouting crowds, outdoors, are particularly good transmission events, indoor/close/prolonged exposure looks like the main thing (but we may figure out differently).

In any case, for the demo in the riots, it's pretty much irrelevant - their risk of a serious case or death is very low.

And as for OR, it's likely there will be an uptick in "cases"* come the late fall. OR has a relatively low anti-body rate, still, and, seasonality, which as with other ILIs is looking very much like a thing with C19.

Of course, THAT won't matter either - AND "policies" won't affect anything.

There's so many layers of idiocy in how almost everyone - including "skeptics" - frame the issues on this, that it may be hopeless. It's as though "anthropogenic climate change" had suddenly become accepted as valid by most of the public, AND almost the entire political class and institutions (I mean really, seriously accepted). The WH goal is "eradication" of C19, and a "vaccine" is the top sub-item.

It's a disaster.

* "cases" being positive tests of dubious reliability, NOT actual cases as would be defined prior to 2020 - symptomatic illness

Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries. we need to see more. That the guy was a criminal is no surprise really. But that is not a good reason for the cop to do what he did. Did the cop even know that at the time? And would it have mattered?
The thing is, if we burn down out cities every time a cop does something wrong, then do we even have a country? Are there not better ways to protest and get the wrongdoers convicted? There will always be wrongs committed, but if we question our nation every time it happens, do we even have a nation?

I missed the Gun Thread last night. This weekend I went out to a sporting goods place and priced some pocket pistols, including the Taurus Spectrum someone here mentioned that he keeps in his glove box. The Spectrum felt heavier than I expected it to, and with the magazine extension, the grip was also better than I expected. I'm sold -- but it's .380, and that ammo is hard to find!

As soon as the damned storms are done, I'll visit one of the shooting ranges in the area and check out a few weapons. In the meantime, I'll pick up a key alarm for Linda, and some pepper gel for both of us.

Elaine Kamarck, a former Clinton administration official, joined conservatives in arguing in her Brookings report that a money-losing post office cannot survive as a government entity in the Internet age, which has sapped its First Class mail business.

Karmack says the best path forward for the Postal Service requires breaking it in two. One arm would continue to deliver the mail five days a week. The other would stake out new business with no encumbrances.

And of course another case of a guy NOT listening to Police instructions and reaching into a car where he might have had a weapon....Should the Police have shot him multiple times? Who knows, I was not there nor do I oer the Gov know what lead up to the confrontation....But I sure as hell see him wilfully ignoring Police instructions and reaching into his car.

Yep, these "terrified, hunted" black men who are so fearful of cops sure do seem to feel that they're entitled to ignore (or even fight) the cops when the cops are ordering them to do something. Curious, that.

George Floyd would likely still be dead regardless of whether or not he had cooperated with cops on his last day, because it was the massive amount of drugs in his system that killed him. But Mike Brown of Ferguson and Freddy Gray of Baltimore and Eric Garner of NY, among others, would still be alive and well if they had just done as the cops instructed them to do and fought their arrests in court, rather than on the streets.

The DM article says the WI guy is currently in stable condition in the hospital, so it sounds like no vital organs were hit. At least there's that.

You shoot to stop the threat, not necessarily to kill. If, say, two
shots stops the threat, any more can and probably will be considered
murder by a prosecutor. There is plenty of case law on that.

745 You and Rev should have at least two "semi auto" weapons within reach at all times. Why else did you sell your cloaks?

I was thinking on my morning walk about how much God loves us Episode #48272.

As a fan of Christian apologetics, the idea that God is our source of morality is often mocked by the scoffers in that they believe that morality comes naturally, that it is self-evident, thus the transcendent origins of morality is allegedly debunked.

So here we are today with the Postmoderns claiming to change the world to be a better place - by systematically tearing down all Western traditions and customs.

They have the benefit of hindsight and thousands of years of written human history to weigh what works and what doesn't work - so they have no excuse not to make the perfect moral code.

We are seeing the fruits of this new "wisdom".

Not only in the big things like burning, looting, murder, the economy and soul destroying things like "Equity" but also in the tiny things.

I was listening to Ravi Z over the weekend and he was relating a story about choices and that our humanity requires them. He told of dining in a Russian restaurant some time after the Cold War and the waitress knew enough English to ask "Do you want dessert?" To which Ravi asked "What do you have?" Answered: "Ice cream".
"What else do you have?" "Just ice cream. What flavor would you like?". They only had vanilla ice-cream. But the lesson was that even though they had no real choices the waitress understood enough that people need to have choices and thus asked him what he wanted.

Two take-aways. One is that the new morality denies us choices - or leaves us with false ones: "Social distance or wear the mask".

The other was this: Ravi apologized to his audience in advance when he was going to assume a voice inflection to represent the Russian waitress.

Which got me to thinking about how the New Morality says only gays can play gays in movies, etc. Will The New Morality also outlaw voice inflections and accents in fear of violating social appropriation laws?

The New Morality also says that Latinix is the appropriate substitute for Latino a/o Latina. So they just use Latinix without any consideration for the possibility that it is offensive to those who refer to themselves as Latino or Latina. That is, the New Morality imposes this forced artificial construction on them regardless of their own desires.

This is yet another proof that God exists, because His Law and his moral code has survived for millennia across all cultures, and when man decides to make his own, even with thousands of years of human history, ends up making a gigantic, soul-destroying, destructive, violent arbitrary, irrational and cruel code of values.
